Excerpt from Narrative of Richard Lee Mason in the Pioneer West 1819In the late fall and early winter of the year 1819 Dr. Richard Lee Mason made a journey from Philadelphia to Illinois, through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Some of his adventures were remarkable, and these, together with his observations on the country, the towns and the people whom he encountered, were recorded in a diary kept by him, which is now in the possession of his only surviving child, a daughter, who resides in Jacksonville, Ill. Dr. Mason was a remarkably intelligent observer, and his record of the people whom he encountered in Illinois more than three-quarters of a century ago, not to mention his notes of travel in other states, is unique and valuable.Richard Lee Mason, whose diary is being published in The Record, was born in Port Tobacco, Md. In 1806 he was married to Mary Hodge Cochrane. Seven children were born to them, of whom five lived to maturity. Soon after his marriage he was graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania. For a time he did military service in the war of 1812, belonging to a cavalry company called "The White Horsemen." For this service he was awarded a large tract of bounty land near Alton, Ill. A Good Historical Account By Nojoqui I downloaded "Narrative of Richard Lee Mason in the Pioneer West, 1819" not having any idea where the author's journey may have taken place. It pleased me that it was in an area different from the usual of what we call "west" in historical presentations. Mason's narration involves traveling between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and, eventually, the wilds of Illinois. The "promised land" was a large tract of land near Alton, Illinois that was awarded to him due to his military service during the War of 1812.The book is presented in the form of a diary. Mason offers up excellent descriptions of the locations and people that he ran across as he traveled westward. They may be a bit subjective but, nonetheless, very entertaining. Some of the things mentioned by Mason are just plain humorous. That was enough to keep me reading. It's quite easy to imagine traveling along with Dr. Mason and listening to his vivid language.Unfortunately, there are no maps included in the narration. Perhaps that was a benefit for me. While reading along I'd find myself referring to Google Maps/Earth to find the places that the author passed through. In the process of "stopping there" with the narrator, the on-line resources mentioned above, plus Wikipedia, gave me a rewarding historical insight. So, I'd consider the book, not only a good read, but a geographical and historic learning tool to areas that history has slipped by in what we consider the western expansion of the United States.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Recommended History Reading By R.H. It is a personal journal of a guy in 1819 who is traveling through the original 'west' (Illinois, etc). If you had a curious nature of early American history and wanted a straight account of things as they appeared to the normal guy, this journal is highly recommended. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it for a high school or college history class as a reading project.
