People thought that divorce is a violation of the Gospel teachings, husbands and wives were expected to live together despite any wrongs committed by their spouse and despite their misery; yet divorces were allowed, but only if the adulterer admitted his adultery and witnesses saw him perform the act. In this play in six acts a husband, Fdya, tells his wife he wants to separate from her. He feels that he is making her life wretched by his drinking and by being a spendthrift, and besides, he knows that his friend, Victor, loves his wife and feels that if he were not around his wife would love Victor, who she grew up with, and finally be happy. Fdya is being pursued by a gypsy who loves him, but Fdya has had no sex with her.Fdya promises his wife and Victor that he will arrange that they can marry. However, he finds that he cannot lie and say that he had sex and pay witnesses to lie that he did so. He decides to keep his promise by killing himself, but discovers that he cannot do this either. So he decides to fake his death by drowning.The final acts describe what happened as a result of this deceit, Fdya's feelings, the feelings of Victor and Fdya's wife and what they do, and how a blackmailer complicates matters, and about a trial and its outcome.

214 of 218 people found the following review helpful. maturing beyond the prison of self By Penelope Schmitt This is my personal favorite among Dickens novels, fully equal to Bleak House, though not nearly as widely read or admired. Most reviewers miss the fact that debtors prisons had long been closed before Dickens wrote the novel, so 'reform' was in no way its objective. What he really wanted to explore was self-imprisonment. His main character, Arthur Clennam, has been imprisoned by family strictures all his life. Denied love as a child, exiled from his sweetheart as a young man to an outpost of the family business in China, left by his father only with a watch inscribed 'DNF' meaning 'do not forget' (what he doesn't know) Arthur returns to England. We first see him 'imprisoned' in quarantine with others who suffer spiritual incarcerations of their own. The spiritual heart of this novel is the story of how Arthur loses hope that he can 'go home again' and pick up with his old life, how he reconstructs a personal life and satisfying work, and how he endures the collapse of the past and all its guilty debts, ultimately being set free to live life on a new foundation. This novel will hearten those who have arrived in the middle of our lives feeling that like Arthur, we stand among ruins, 'descending a green and growing tree' whose limbs die and wither under us as we come down. But when he is finally stripped of everything, Arthur gains all. While this great bildungsroman of maturity is being carried forward, Dickens offers a wealth of characters, plots, and subplots that will keep Dickens lovers turning pages in well-founded faith that Boz will once again knit all together in a satisfying tapestry of incident and meaning. It could be summed up as "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." All the characters are jailed by something--Little Dorrit herself by her prison home, her father by his dependency and pathetic grasping for reputation. Blandois, the wicked murderer, shows up first in a Marseilles prison and bestrides the plot with his vile presence. Arthur's mother stays voluntarily imprisoned in a decaying house and her wheelchair, and worse, in wrath and jealousy. We also meet a housemaid trapped in uncontrollable rage, the woman who abducts her, walled in pride and hatred, a young woman trapped in adoration of a worthless husband, parents frozen in grief over a lost child, a financier transfixed with the knowledge of his own falsity . . . and more. Secrets, nightmares, murders, lost deeds and treasure, stolen fortunes, all abound in this vivid and satisfying plum pudding of a novel. Modern readers may weary of the satirical chapters on 'the Circumlocution Office'--but they're no worse than the treatment of the Court of Chancery in Bleak House. The best of this novel is that it is not all written just for the satisfactory settlement of some young person, but rather for the arrival at full maturity of a man who is already adult at the novel's opening. Arthur (one remembers that Britain's legendary king bore that name) rescues others from despair, and finally learns to let others so rescue him. This is a redemptive novel, that shows us it is possible to see that we are inside the prison of who we've been taught we are, and believe we can't stop being, and it is possible to break beyond those prison walls and 'go down to a life' of quiet decency and common happiness. A great, grownup read!
75 of 76 people found the following review helpful. My favorite Dickens novel By S. Cornell I truly don't understand why this novel is not more widely read or discussed. Thanks to the BBC dramatization, it has been saved from obscurity. Even though the television adaptation is quite good, it is no substitute for reading the full text of the book. I would disagree with those who say this was not one of the author's best novels; on the contrary, I feel it is one of his very best. Dickens wrote so many great books of which I am a fan. Among my favorites are: Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield. Of all these masterpieces, Little Dorrit is my absolute favorite. I heard somewhere that Shaw felt Little Dorrit was Dickens's best work. Who am I to argue with Shaw? I believe many critics and those who study Dickens would agree. Ironically, the work was wildly popular during Dickens own life when it was published in serial form. In fact, that is the best way to read the novel...in small portions. You will choke to death if you try and consume it in one bite. This novel is too big and rich to devour quickly. I had a difficult time getting into the book after the initial few chapters but was richly rewarded as I continued on. This is not a book for lightweights. The length of the book is quite intimidating, the plot is complex, and the characters numerous; that being said, it is well worth the effort to read. I could not put it down as I came to the last few hundred pages. I absolutely loved it by the time I finished the book. It is one of Dickens's darker novels, which may put some off. Even so, many, if not most, of Dickens novels deal with unpleasant topics, and there is quite a bit of humor (Flora, her aunt, Afferty...) in Little Dorrit to balance the darkness. In fact the book is full of balance - wonderful Dickens prose, masterful characterization, as well as one the best plots ever devised. As others have said so well, this novel stands up to multiple readings. I certainly plan to reread and savor it many times.
31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. I would give it six stars if I could By Mezzanine This is a long book - it feels like a 1000 pages - but it is a masterpiece. Dickens takes us from Marseilles, home to an evil man whose smile makes his moustache disappear under his top lip and draws us into a dark, damp, murky Victorian London where one's whole future existence seems to be mapped out at birth, and where to escape from one's perceived 'destiny' is both sacriligeous and impossible. The Marshalsea Prison is a place all of us can visualise - a debtors prison from which many fail to escape, the dubious honour of the Father of the Marshalsea bestowed on the longest-serving inmate. Little Dorrit - Amy - is the daughter of the Father of the Marshalsea and this is her tale, one which stretches across the grime of smoggy nineteenth century London to the pollution of Continental Europe. The cast of characters is fascinating and Dickens rarely misses a trick - each is easily comparable to people any of us knows today. I studied this book at school and I have read it four or five times since.

Davis Sonia Michelson, an elderly guitar teacher from Los Angeles, moved to the small village of Ofra on the Isreali West Bank in 2005. HOME AT LAST is the story of her first year there as told through emails she sent to relatives, friends, and guitar students that she had left behind.Mrs. Michelson's enthusiasm for the new and unexpected may have partly stemmed from the loving greetings she received from her large contingent of children and grandchildren already living in Isreal but nevertheless she describes the challenges each day brought with humor, understanding, and joy.For anyone who has wondered what such a move might be like this book is filled with colorful descriptions. For anyone planning to move to Isreal this book could be required reading.

An inspiring story By Blackfeather Sonia Saeta Michelson has written a book that is enticingly easy to read while being compelling and inspiring on many levels. At age 77, after making the decision to pack up and leave her home town of Los Angeles for a transatlantic journey to join her family by moving to Israel, she writes in loving detail about the warmth of her family aiding her transition while describing with youthful wonder all the discoveries, natural beauty and historic resonance of her new homeland. Michelson is also frank and upfront about the process of making aliyah, from the bureaucratic, paperwork process to the intensity of learning a new and complex language. Here again, Michelson's courage and spirit is winning as she writes with humor on many of the everyday surprises and cultural adjustments and personal trials faced during her first year in Israel. Her book is not just that of a grandmother reuniting with her family but also a concise depiction of a woman, of both ageless spirit and conviction, embracing a new country as well.

Chet Van Duzer continues to produce the best analysis of old maps By Jim Siebold I am an avid collector and researcher of old maps and Chet Van Duzer's book on the Desceliers' map is EXCELLENT! The depth and quality of research is impressive. The quality of the images are also excellent. These maps have not received this depth of analysis and research until this book. Van Duzer explores and compares many related cartographic efforts, including the Morgan Library Atlas, Waldseemuller's Carta Marina (1516), Giovanni Vespucci's world map of 1526, Jean Rotz's Boke of Idrography (1542), Guillaume Brouscon's world map of 1543, the Harleian map (1542-4), Nicolas Desliens's world map (1541) and the Vallard Atlas (1547) in addition to the three world maps by Desceliers (1546, 1550, 1553). Again, all if the maps are displayed with excellent quality and resolution. Attached to this book is a both a full-size reproduction of the 1550 world map, a transcription of all of the map's legends and a removable facsimile with commentaries.

Santiago, Calatrava, and Alcantara shared the same essential mission and purpose: the defense and expansion of Christendom understood as an act of charity, expressed primarily through fighting and secondarily through the care of the sick and the ransoming of captives. Their prayers were simple and their penances were aimed at knightly vices and the preservation of military discipline. Above all, the orders valued obedience. Wolinsky Sam Zeno Conedera tries to answer long-pondered questions about the religious based military orders. Firstly, how effective were they in military and government affairs? Secondly, how sincere were they in their religious belief? While there were many such orders, most famously the Templars and the Knights of Rhodes, the author focuses on the Iberian orders only. These “fighting monks,” as they are often known, existed in Spain before the country unified, so we might start by saying that they were the origin of Spain as we know it. As discussed in the book, they provided heavily for Spain’s defense, as well as economy.In the chapter Interior Castle, we learn that the Iberian order weren’t all combatants; they had levels of knights, sergeants, clerics, and sister. The knights were nobles who took vows, while the sergeants were the more numerous commoners. There were clerics who acted as chaplains, and women members who served in the medical field. Thought history books ignore them, the nuns had greater medical knowledge than the doctors of the era, as attested by their surviving journals. After all, it was the nuns who ran the hospitals and cared for the sick, though the men get the credit (not with killing their patients.) The knight-sergeant arrangement was probably the same as that of the modern officer and enlisted man; the sergeant would lead common fighters, while the knight was involved in the planning, equipping, and overall decision making.As far as religion goes, it was a kind of synergy, where the combatants and the clergy needed each other in several ways. The nation needed an army for defense, and the monasteries needed the knights to defend their vast property. Since the various Iberian states could easily get into conflict, the Catholic church was something of a unifying factor. If it could keep the Iberian knights from fighting each other, then they’d be less distracted when it came to fighting the Muslims. If they had charters from the Pope in Rome, then it would protect them from being attacked by the French and/or English.I do remember a similar argument in the book Women of Faith, about Catholic sisters in Chicago, where the author promotes the nuns’ contribution. According to that book, the convents, with their schools and hospitals, provided a service to a land that was not well served by the government. They also provided a place for women who wanted education and work, but didn’t want to get married and by owned by a man. Similarly, a free-born peasant boy, uninterested in farming, and lacking any skill, could join one of the Iberian orders, learn to fight, and would no longer be subservient in the way a tenant farmer was.The Iberian orders were one of the few options for upward mobility in the days when Spain wasn’t unified. They would eventually go into a decline as the nation consolidated.

Staric describes his life from 1941 until 1991. First his country Slovenia—then the northwestern part of Yugoslavia—was occupied by the Italians, Germans and Hungarians. They divided the country among themselves and the Italians occupied the southern part of Slovenia along with the capital Ljubljana (where the author lived). The author vividly describes the circumstances in the Italian concentration camp where he was incarcerated, as well as life under German occupation after the Kingdom of Italy capitulated in 1943. At the end of war in 1945, the fascist and Nazi terror was replaced by communist totalitarianism in the style of the Soviet Union. During World War II the communists began killing not only the occupiers, but also their Slovenian political opponents. In the first months after the war, extensive mass killings took place throughout Yugoslavia, mostly in Slovenia. The graves of the victims were top secret until 1991, when Slovenia became an independent country and abandoned communist totalitarianism. Since then about 620 mass graves with at least 100,000 victims have been discovered, all cruelly murdered. However, in the 24 years since Slovene independence, not a single culprit has been sentenced or punished thus far for the mass killings and repression.
My Life under Totalitarianism, by Peter StaricAbout the Author Peter Staric was born on September 2, 1924 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where he completed all of his studies. He graduated in electronics engineering in 1961 and obtained his PhD in 1991. After his retirement in 1994, he and his co-author Erik Margan completed the professional book Wideband Amplifiers, which was published by Springer/Kluwer Press in 2005 and reprinted in 2007. In 2007, Staric published the Slovenian popular-science book “Atomska bomba” (Atomic bomb). Dr. Staric is the author of numerous popular-science articles, book reviews, and articles befitting his eclectic interests.

Wonderful book about a very hard but an absolutely plentiful and successful life by Peter Starič By szacsa ‘My Life Under Totalitarianism’ by Peter StaričBesides the unique book of Peter Starič, ‘Wideband Amplifier’, as a Hungarian engineer I have studied many other technical books in my life. I sometimes read some information about the authors’ careers but I never really got into their detailed biographies. However, when I took the book ‘My Life Under Totalitarianism’ by Peter Starič in my hands, I became absolutely eager to know who this very learned engineer was. As I was turning the pages of his book I realized I could not part with it until I read its last word. His writing style is so enjoyable and smooth that it is very difficult to interrupt reading.In his book the writer shows not only his own adventurous life but the history of his country from the Italian invasion until the establishment of the consolidated, free Slovenia.Hungary is a neighboring country to Slovenia, however, Hungarians’ knowledge about Slovenian history during WWII is far from being sufficient. In my country older generations still think of Slovenia as part of former Yugoslavia, but Mr. Starič’s book has made us realize that it is not true; it’s a country with its unique history of its own. Thus in the book among many other things we get to know about the terrible Italian concentration camp in Gonars, the German invasion when the country was ‘liberated’ from the Italians, the national Domobranci movement, the terror of partisans who killed not only the Germans but Slovenian patriots, the horrible act of OZNA (similar to the Hungarian ÁVO), the anarchy and quasi-civil war in the country, the Serbian oppression, the mass graves in Barbara mine, and last but not least about the dreadful but ‘human-faced’ communism and its leaders as ‘great capitalists’ .Peter Starič’s book is especially exciting because historical facts are based upon his true-to-life experiences. The author himself was sent to a concentration camp in Italy for the reason of being a young Slovenian radio amateur. Here he fell ill with dysentery and tuberculosis. When he got out of the concentration camp, his own life started as a radio mechanic. He made a long way with many interruptions and lots of learning to reach his graduation and acquire a PhD diploma as well as to write valuable technical and other books, many articles and work on high-level technologies.In his book the author also wrote about his travels around the world, his working in the USA at the world famous factory called Tektronix, and most importantly about how many good friends he had gathered during his life. It also turns out that during his life he has always been fond of classical music and mountaineering. He plays the piano himself, and has ascended many peaks above 2000 meters, especially at his beloved place in the Julian Alps.In Peter Starič’s book there are some scenes that have really moved me. The most unforgettable for me is the one taking place at the very moment when WWII finishes depicting the young Peter and Cveta (later Peter Starič’s wife) running out to the green field enjoying freedom and fearless life together under the sunny, blue sky.To sum up I recommend this fascinating, page-turning book not only to Hungarians and Slovenians, but to everybody who is interested in a very hard but an absolutely plentiful and successful life.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful piece of history told from a person who lived it! By Jacqueline Bedke I read the Slovene version of this book as well as the english one. It is not only insightful in to the life of a person suffering through war, but it gives detailed and candid account of a piece of history which you will not read in a history book. The Book brings out a myriad of emotions, from terror, pain, laughter, and joy of the little things in life. Also, the author has a unique sense of humour which creates a lighter tone throughout his biography. I strongly recommend this book, as it grounds us in this day and age to know what struggles our fore-fathers had to bear, how they laughed, what they found important as well as how they suffered.

A shocking book about a lifelong balancing between hope and fear By Henk van Trigt In the twilight of his eventful life, Peter Starič- an electronics engineer by profession, born and living in Slovenia - has written the book ‘My Life under Totalitarianism: 1941 - 1991’, which presents a history that is unknown to many of us. In disclosing events that occurred in Slovenia in the twentieth century, Starič reveals a heavily underexposed and ‘forgotten’ history of a small country in Europe. Taking his personal experiences as a guide throughout the book, Starič - not influenced by any political affiliation whatsoever - conscientiously and chronologically recounts the atmosphere in his home country in the period between 1941 and 1991: the occupation and crimes committed first by the Italian Fascists and then by the German Nazis, followed later on by the communists. He addresses his own hardships as a young man in Italian concentration camps and his stay in sanatoria thereafter, and reveals what happened in his country immediately after 1945: the humiliations and massacres carried out by the communists. Furthermore, he narrates about his life as a student, his work, his departure to the United States to seek his fortune, his return, and more... In particular, he vividly describes what it is like to live in constant fear, to have to keep silent, his passive resistance against the authorities, the disappointments and humiliations.In the Introduction, Starič (born in 1924) briefly outlines his background and early years in which his love of electronics was born, a passion that he later on developed at academic level. Reading the first chapters of the book, I was mostly struck by what the author writes about the invasion and occupation by the Italian Fascists, followed by the German Nazis. The extent to which this small country - sandwiched between Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Italy - and its population was terrorized is shocking. I was particularly impressed by the author’s frank revelations about his imprisonment in Italian concentration camps and his subsequent stay in sanatoria, recovering from the illnesses he suffered in the camps. Starič was able to survive merely by strong willpower and survival instinct, which he describes with great precision.In the Chapter ‘Dissolution of the Slovenian Army’, Starič talks about the gruesome humiliations by the communists and the subsequent massacres of (real and perceived) traitors, collaborators and political opponents. Being in the town of Celje in June 1945, Starič witnessed the degrading actions against members of the Slovene Home Guard, but also against ordinary civilians, including old women and children. Today, he may be the last eyewitness still alive. The events described did not leave me unscathed, and stayed with me for a long time. Entire families were executed immediately after World War II. Years later, over six hundred mass graves containing one to two hundred thousand bodies were discovered in Slovenia. The impunity of these crimes until today is incomprehensible. In the Epilogue, Starič refers to the well-known crimes committed in Bosnia in 1995, in particular the tragedy that took place in Srebrenica, which is internationally recognized as the largest massacre in Europe after World War II. In this regard, he stresses that the events in his country in mid-1945 are herewith ignored: ‘However, only the mass murder, which happened in Slovenia, mostly in May and June 1945, surpasses the Bosnian massacre in numbers and in cruelty. This is only a small part of all mass murders, which happened in the whole Yugoslavia in some months after WWII’.The second part of the book mainly treats Starič’s studies and work, including a description of his jobs as an electronics engineer in a number of companies, organizations and institutions, the little appreciation and obstacles he encountered basically due to the fact that he was not a Communist Party Member, or in fact no sympathizer. He managed to overcome the many disappointments by exercising his hobby in the classical music or by throwing himself enthusiastically into mountain climbing in the Alps Julia. In 1967, he decided to leave his beloved country - due to the economic and political conditions - and to move to the United States. He went to work at Tektronix, but returned to his home country after three years. In Slovenia, the situation had not improved. On the contrary, Starič was even more carefully observed by the communist authorities than before, since he had been in the United States. At the end, after a few jobs at various companies, he started to work at the ‘Milan Vidmar Institute’, which facilitated him to gain his PhD degree in 1991, at the age of 67 (!). Thereafter, Starič published several books and articles, both specialized technical and popular scientific works.Starič’s story officially runs from 1941 to 1991. However, in the extensive Epilogue, the author goes beyond this period and addresses the situation after Slovenia’s independence in 1991 (following the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia) and its current difficult situation as a country within the European Union. Even though Slovenia is now a democratic state, supporters of the ‘former’ communism are still present in all levels of society. Yet, Starič believes his country to eventually move towards a ‘happy ending’. He concludes by saying: ‘Even though I will not live to see, the necessary changes will eventually happen!’Concluding, ‘My Life Under Totalitarianism’ comprises the revelations of a militant scientist, of the history of a small country which has fallen into oblivion. Fluently written and very meticulous and detailed at the same time, and at times comprising humoristic parts, which reveals an erudite and intelligent author. My field embraced most of the District of Altar, in the State of Sonora, Mexico, as well as the southern part of the newly admitted State of Arizona; in other words, the region which by the early Spanish chroniclers was designated as Papagueria, after the native inhabitants, the Papago Indians. Some of this country, being the least accessible part of the Sonora Desert, is singularly little known, though lying, so to speak, at the door of the great empire of Yankee enterprise. My mission gave me an opportunity for geographical and ethnological studies, an account of which is here presented in popular form. For this opportunity I am grateful to my friends.Among my predecessors in exploration of the Papagueria should be mentioned Prof. W. J. McGee, well known from his studies of the Seri Indians, lower down the Gulf. It is a hodgepodge and in addition to poems has other material, most of which you will not want to read. It also contains a glossary/explanatory notes section that seems to come from a college textbook--perhaps this really is a college textbook and the book is mislabeled on Kindle, where I bought it. No one who is a serious reader and has a graduate degree would benefit from the explanatory notes. It is difficult to read this book on Kindle because it is hard to scroll through it to find the poems you want to read.

By Kindle Customer A recent episode of Rick Steves' travel show featured the landscapes of which Wordsworth wrote so beautifully so I decided to download this volume of poems. I am so happy I did. One can feel the earth, see the landscape, the valleys, the sky, smell the flowers and and earth! Such experience which touched the poet and the reader so deeply. S

It explains how we overcame problems like the fact that at the time this was written, the United States had next to no mail capabilities between the west coast and east coast, as well as had to depend on Great Britain for all of our oversea mail.

Not any more, though...."I'm a mystery writer, and Daphne du Maurier was one of my earliest inspirations. REBECCA is her masterpiece, followed by two other novels, THE SCAPEGOAT and this 1951 bestseller. The opening sentences of MY COUSIN RACHEL (above) are second only to the immortal opening line of REBECCA.In 1840s Cornwall, young Philip Ashley inherits the fortune of the cousin who raised him, who has recently married abroad (Italy) and died under mysterious circumstances. Philip's pleasant life is disrupted by the sudden arrival of his cousin's beautiful widow, Rachel. Initially planning to send her on her way with a generous pension, he soon finds himself falling in love with her--even as he begins to suspect that she murdered his cousin and may be planning the same fate for him.Rarely have I read a novel in which the tension and suspense arise almost exclusively from character. Who is this woman? What is she doing? How is the young hero going to respond to her? These questions have haunted readers since the book first appeared, and they will continue to do so for a long time to come. Reading the book again after all these years, I was amazed by du Maurier's plotting, her use of language, and the way she can create an atmosphere of foreboding that is almost palpable. Writers can learn a lot from this master, and RACHEL is a must for anyone who loves the very best in suspense.PS: The 1952 film version, with Olivia de Havilland and an incredibly young Richard Burton in the leads, is also excellent.

By A Customer This book (and the 1952 film, with Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton) have haunted me since I first read the book over 20 years ago. It's a mesmerizing and artful tour de force, building high atmosphere, suspense and intrigue - and using relentless ambiguity. Du Maurier (12 or 13 years after "Rebecca" - and in my opinion the added maturity shows in more complex characters, circumstances and moral nuances) masterfully spins her tale, weaving in vivid images of a warm and fertile Italy contrasted against those of a cool green England with an economy of description. A naive young man (Philip) in his early twenties, raised by and adoring of his bachelor uncle (Ambrose), is plunged into suspicion on news that his beloved uncle has suddenly and mysteriously died abroad soon after marrying a previously unknown cousin (you guessed it - Rachel) in Florence. Ghastly fantasies mount as Philip awaits Rachel's arrival in England. But she turns out to be a worldly woman of unanticipated charms, who turns young Philip's head entirely. Is she a villainous murderess? Or merely a world-wise woman torn by affection for a dashing much younger man, bearing a marked resemblance to her husband of so few months? Delicious issues are raised, including what are the moral constraints of a woman in a world which allows her few ways to financial freedom. Does the fact that a woman understands finance necessarily mean that she doesn't love a rich husband? Is an Italian woman with a mastery of healing herbs necessarily a poisoner? Can a world-wise woman who has long since lost her innocence nonetheless be captivated by the dewy youthfulness of a young man? And, as with all du Maurier, all of the events occur in lush and beautifully described surrounding events and places. I'm a big reader, and this is one of my big favorites!
62 of 67 people found the following review helpful. Who Does Gothic Better than Du Maurier? No One! By Stephanie Toland My Cousin Rachel is by Daphne du Maurier (288 pgs) and was written in 1951. There is something about the way du Maurier writes that makes it hard to put one of her books down. And this is no exception. From the opening sentence, I was utterly and completely enthralled!!The story is told by Philip Ashley, a young orphan who was taken in to raise by his cousin Ambrose, a young man not much more than a boy himself. And it was just the two of them for many years. No women around at all....not even on the staff. There was never a need, when the men could get along so well without them! When Ambrose's health starts to falter a bit, he is pushed to spend the cold, damp winters in a warmer climate. Imagine Philip's surprise when, one winter, Ambrose writes that he has married a woman from Florence! Her name was Rachel, a widow that was struggling to survive the debt her first husband had left. Not only was Philip surprised, he was jealous. Ambrose had always been his and his alone. He never had to share him with anyone.When Ambrose decides to stay in Florence to help settle some estate problems for Rachel, Philip is upset. And when Ambrose's correspondence starts falling behind, he even starts to get worried. About this time a letter arrives for Philip that is shaky and completely unlike Ambrose. Philip quickly decides to make the trip to Florence. Ambrose complains of being sick and is having doubts about Rachel, his torment. But when Philip arrives at the villa in Italy, Ambrose has already passed away, and Rachel has left the country. With revenge on his mind, Philip goes back to England to find he will inherit the entire Ashley estate on his twenty-fifth birthday, which is only 6 months away. No provisions at all have been made for Rachel, Ambrose's widow. This is just how Philip would have it, until the day that his cousin, Rachel arrives in England. She is not at all the type of woman he expected.The thing about this book is that once you read it, you will have more questions than when you started!! Is Rachel the sweet, innocent angel she seems to be? Flirty, but naive? Or is she a calculating, evil temptress, who only uses men for her personal gain? And what about Philip? Is he driven mad by jealousy and obsession? Or is there something else at work? The ending is anything but straightforward, and the reader is left to his own to answer these questions. The mystery surrounding Rachel unravels slowly, but in such a way as to keep you on the edge of your seat. I actually liked this book far more than I did Rebecca, du Maurier's more popular work. Excellent, Gothic read for a stormy and dark night!!
