My Portuguese is atrocious and I only speak 'tourist Portuguese.' I downloaded this book for a friend whose first language is Brazilian Portuguese onto my Nook (after running it through Calibre to turn it into .epub) and loaned it to her for a 13-hour trip she was making to Rio de Janeiro. She was so happy with the knowledge she could purchase native-language books here in the USA without carrying a suitcase full of books from Brazil that when she came back, she bought a Kindle.

The first major work on this enigmatic British general for more than 40 years, William Howe and the American War of Independence offers fascinating new insights into his performance during the revolution in America.

From 1775 to 1777, Howe commanded the largest expeditionary force Britain had ever amassed, confronting the rebel army under George Washington and enjoying a string of victories. However, his period in command ended in confusion, bitterness and a parliamentary inquiry, because he proved unable to crush the rebellion.

Exactly what went wrong has puzzled historians for more than 200 years. For most Howe has been relegated to the role of a bit player, but, with the help of new evidence, this book looks afresh at his army, his relationships with key military and political figures and his own personal qualities. The result is a compelling reassessment of a forgotten general that offers a new perspective on a man who won his battles, but could not win his war.

William Howe and the American War of Independence (Bloomsbury Studies in Military History), by David Smith

Review

“Historians agree that General Sir William Howe had the best chance of all of George III's commanders to crush the American Revolution. Despite Howe's importance, he remains an enigma, and he has gone without a detailed biographical treatment for more than four decades. David Smith has breathed new life into a subject shunned by other scholars by discovering an earlier draft of the defense Howe offered the House of Commons to justify his conduct in America. Relying on this revealing find, other archival sources, and the recent wave of groundbreaking research on the British Army in the American War of Independence, William Howe and the American War of Independence offers a perceptive reevaluation of Howe's generalship. Smith's work is destined to carve a prominent niche for itself in a crowded and competitive field – early American military history.” ―Gregory J. W. Urwin, Professor of History, Temple University, USA

“Britain's defeat in the American War of the Independence and the subsequent loss of the colonies was a seismic event for late eighteenth century British history. The war and the consequences for Britain's empire have over the years attracted much comment by historians. This historiography has, however, shied away from examining the generalship of arguably the most notable of George III's commanders and certainly the one who possessed in 1776 the best opportunity to defeat the rebellion, Sir William Howe. In this path-breaking contribution, David Smith offers a revaluation of the Sir William's Howe's conduct during the war based upon not only a wealth of archival research in Britain and America but also upon a newly found document, a draft of Howe's defence to the House of Common's enquiry into his performance in America. By examining Howe's generalship in the wider context of his military experience and education as well as his command relationships and decisions in-theatre, Smith shows Howe to be a competent but unlucky general whose reputation was diminished mainly by his inability to provide a compelling account for his political masters. This work thus provides an original contribution to military history in addition to serving as a parable for modern military commanders.” ―K. A. J. McLay, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK

About the Author David Smith is a lecturer on the Military History MA programme at the University of Chester, UK. He is the author of Sherman's March to the Sea 1864 (2007) and New York 1776 (2008).

William Howe is something of a mystery, despite his importance, because of a shortage of documentary evidence (notably personal correspondence). The author has carefully researched the subject and has found and used a draft of Howe's Narrative which was his defense before Parliament. Nevertheless, it is a careful analysis of Howe's decision that distinguishes this work. The author looks at each instance of the claim that Howe failed to follow up success and destroy the American army. His conclusions are reasonsble, although necessarily tentative. He also demonstrates that we may know less than we thought. What did General Howe really look like? Mr. Smith sees Howe as a competent commander, but little more. There is another way of looking at Howe, implicit in the book. Howe wanted at least 35,000 men for his campaign of 1777. There was no prospect of getting them; but even if Howe had gotten them, unless the Americans meekly gave up, only a raging optimist could have believed they would have been sufficient to pacify the East Coast of America. Howe really made only one major mistake--taking the American command.

It seems like a "could have happened this this way". But it just leaves me hanging in South America, and I'm left to finish the story however I want.

I have only known the hearsay that he shot himself to his grave but reading about him through this book got me curious and hooked all the way until the end. I think that the book for its short length has all the details I need for my report on Hitler death conspiracies. It was very easy to read and it’s written convincingly that I turned from one page to the next until I finished it in one sitting.Reading about the clever but power-hungry Stalin made and his plots made me think about the conditions of World War II and how lucky we are to be living in this era despite the current wars that are also occurring today. I can’t even imagine the kind of suffering the citizens at the timehad to go through during those times. The book has many interesting ideas that got me thinking that maybe Hitler did escape soundly and lived his old age until health issues took hold of him.Part of me thinks that the Nazis really did find his remains scorched, but another part also can agree that he managed to make a devil deal with Stalin in exchange for his disappearance.I can say that this book will get you thinking about a lot of historical truths and it will ignite the curiosity you have and keep you holding onto it until you finish. It’s the just the material I’ve been looking for to make good in my report for class. If you want to know some intriguing theories, Hitler in particular, I think you should give this a read. This will fascinate you!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Prescient but only because common sense rules By Kris This very old document is chock-full of short-form case studies of railroad accidents and their causes. It is written for the railroad worker of the early 20th century using examples from both 19th and 20th century accidents. Common sense prevails in the explanations, for the most part, but the frank presentation of the vast majority of the problems of that period's railway safety problems are still applicable today. From simple dreadful mistakes passengers make on the platform to exploding steam engine boilers to signal failures, this is a comprehensive commentary on railway safety of the early 20th century for just a buck.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Decent book By Gene Sargeant it was a book that covered a lot of factual information. I felt as though the author was in a sense spending most of his time finding fault with railroad companies most of the time. the appendix of the train rules were very good.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Old time common sense. By MikeyB I gave this 5 stars. It was just common sense things that went wrong that injured someone. Still happens today. Easy reading without getting into too many details. As a person who is into railroading and work on railroad equipment, I really enjoyed this. Shows that people did stupid things even so long ago, but instead of doing it in your car, you trusted your life to someone else to get you there, in a train, just like flying today, and you have to hope they can make the right decision all the time.

Charles Hodge is a well-known and important theologian and a defender of Calvinism. He taught at Princeton Theological Seminary for fifty years, and 3,000 ministers of the Gospel passed under his instruction. He was accorded the rare privilege, during a long life, of achieving distinction as a teacher, exegete, preacher, controversialist, ecclesiastic, and systematic theologian. He had a significant impact on the intellectual climate of the 19th century. His Systematic Theology is his greatest work. Composed of three separate volumes, it addresses some of the most important theological questions of both that time and our current time. The first volume contains an introduction and then addresses Theology Proper--the study of God. The second volume examines Anthropology--the study of human beings--and Soteriology--the study of salvation. The third and final volume discusses Eschatology--the study of end times. Hodge's Systematic Theology is clearly a work of Reformed thought but is profitable for study even outside the Reformed community. Further, this unabridged version of his work retains the mastery of Hodge's work. Since the first publication of these volumes, countless theologians and pastors have found them helpful.

Tales of Passed Times, by Charles Perrault

About the Author Charles Perrault was a French author and member of the prestigious Acad?mie Fran?aise. Taking his inspiration from folk tales, Perrault created the fairy tale genre, including such enduring tales as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, and Sleeping Beauty, which were published in 1697 as part of his Tales of Mother Goose. Amongst the most influential literary figures in 17th century France, Perrault took part in the creation of the Academy of Sciences, the restoration of the Academy of Painting, and was secretary of the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres. He also initiated the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, and led the Modern faction which argued that the literature from the century of Louis XIV was superior to that of the ancients. Perrault s work served as an inspiration for the Brothers Grimm, and continues to be adapted for the stage, opera, ballet, and film.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Dark Tales By Maggie Stevens A friend suggested I read some fairy tales as a light relief from my usual grim murder mysteries. I found them compulsive reading perhaps because I was amazed by the level of unmitigated violence meted out on pretty princesses and careless queens. It's just bad luck to be married to an ogre (literally not metaphorically) particularly one who, accidentally on purpose, cuts the throats of his five children. Stephen King eat your heart out. In this book it just might happen

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. So glad I got this. By Scott The only bummer is that it doesn't have a working title of contents. But when you get something like this for free, you shouldn't complain. I wouldn't have spent money for these fairly tales anyhow. And now I have them, in a translation that I like. Sweet.

His novels deal with big issues and produce a great literary experience. I have read three of his novels and intend to read all that he has written.

A British soldier walked over to the German front line to deliver newspapers; British women married to Germans became "enemy aliens" in their own country; a high-ranking British POW discussed his own troops’ heroism with the Kaiser on the battlefield. Just three amazing stories of contact between the opposing sides in the Great War that eminent historian Richard van Emden has unearthed--incidents that show brutality, great humanity, and above all, the bizarre nature of a conflict between two nations with long-standing ties of kinship and friendship. Meeting the Enemy reveals for the first time how contact was maintained on many levels throughout the War, and through its stories--sometimes funny, often moving--gives us a new perspective on the lives of ordinary men and women caught up in extraordinary events.

Meeting the Enemy: The Human Face of the Great War, by Richard van Emden

Review

“Remarkable . . . Richard van Emden is a World War I specialist who has found a niche, little explored, charting the personal contacts between Britons and Germans and their feelings about each other as the war progressed . . . Makes you think rather differently about the so-called ‘Great War For Civilisation.'” ―Daily Mail

“Richard van Emden's tour-de-force of research casts a fascinating new light on the human face of the Great War, allowing us into the strangest of meetings between British and German enemies in the trenches, behind the lines and on the home front . . . Extraordinary and often inspirational stories of comradeship between foes . . . Among many compelling photographs in this book, there is a grainy and heartbreaking image of a bowed and broken British prisoner tied to a post and left in the snow.” ―Richard Kemp, a former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, The Times

“From the horrors of the First World War battlefields are tales of extraordinary camaraderie between British and German soldiers.” ―Daily Express

“In Meeting the Enemy, the historian Richard van Emden shifts his focus from the grim fields of the First World War to the small, all but unknown instances of compassion across enemy lines.” ―New Statesman

“Richard van Emden uncovers myriad encounters between German and British forces . . . Van Emden's tales of friendship and honour between enemies only heighten the mystery of how these men slaughtered each other in their millions for four years.” ―Metro

“Meeting the Enemy is a meticulously researched account of contacts between the British and Germans during the war, mainly in the trenches, but also as prisoners of war and as 'enemy alien' wives. It is full of fascinating information and will appeal particularly to great war gluttons, the people who can't get enough of this stuff.” ―Observer

“An interesting chapter on what happened to those in mixed Anglo-German marriages . . . Van Emden wants to remind us that not all was hellish: there was also humour, mutual baiting and occasional easy-going relations. As well as direct contact during the Christmas truces, this book explores indirect contacts, using many unpublished letter and diaries.” ―Peter Conradi, Spectator

“A real cracker.” ―Literary Review

About the Author Richard van Emden has interviewed over 270 veterans of the Great War and has written fourteen books on the subject including Boy Soldiers of the Great War and The Last Fighting Tommy. He has also worked on more than a dozen television programs on the First World War, including Britain's Last Tommies, Britain's Boy Soldiers, the award-winning Roses of No Man's Land, and most recently, War Horse: The Real Story. Anderson I had expected from "Meeting" in the title more an account of soldiers from opposite sides encountering each other in various circumstances and, perhaps, discovering their mutual humanity. Images from "All Quiet on the Western Front" and of the historical Christmas Truce in 1914 came to mind. There is some of that, but it's not what most of this book is about.Instead, the author relates in considerable detail the experiences of enemy aliens detained in the 'enemy' countries in which they lived or happened to be visiting when the war broke out (and to some extent the later experiences of POWs, mainly British). Many were people of German origin living in Britain, some of whom had become naturalized citizens. Others included Britons who had married Germans and under British law of the day automatically became German citizens even if they continued to live in Britain. In some cases these accounts are interesting, but in others they are detailed to the point of tediousness.Although it contains much information, this is an uneven book, sometimes lacking continuity, and occasionally incorporating errors -- the most glaring of which, to a history buff, is the author's reference (on p. 298) to von Hindenburg as "chancellor" in 1917. Hindenburg was a field marshal in the German Army. He retired soon after the war, and later, in 1925, was elected president of Germany, in which office he remained until his death in 1934. Hindenburg was never chancellor, though in his dotage (at age 85) he unfortunately was pressured by a cabal of right-wing politicians into appointing Hitler chancellor in 1933.In the end, the book simply stops. There is no effort to summarize or draw conclusions from the experiences of people on either side during the four years of mutual slaughter that was World War I.

Washington Meeting The Enemy: The Human Face of the Great War is one of those books that tends to up end all my preconcpetions about this first global conflict. It is usually overlooked (at least in Britain) that until the outbreak of WWI, the two countries had long standing cultural, religious( the patron saint of Germany is an English born missionary St.Boniface( and even familialy( Kaiser Wilhelm was not just a cousin of King George V- as both were of Czar Nicholas II of Russia- but a grandson of Queen Victoria and until 1917 the British Royal Family as known as Saxe Coburg- now renamed Windsor). Despite several petty and small minded attitudes towards the "enemy"(both civilians and soldiers), Richard van Emden also scrupulously records instances of moving humanity even in the extremity of war.

1st Edition. Signed by author AND B-17 Pilot, Robert Boecking. Illustrated. Includes 33 photographs, Mission Target Map, and 38 page-images from the pilot's hand-written Mission Journal of training and 36 Missions flown over Germany, Czechoslovakia, and France in 1944. In this riveting recital of combat and camaraderie by a World War II bomber pilot, author Winifred Tappan interviews Robert Boecking, who flew B-17 Flying Fortresses in the 379th heavy Bomb Group, 8th Air Force stationed at Kimbolten Air Field, England. The book includes the pages of his detailed Mission Journal. The book also includes a first-person account from a woman who - then a young girl - was on the ground as the pilot flew overhead, his plane raining the area with bombs. Tappan has thoroughly researched and referenced the pilot's account, which chillingly describes fighting flack and enemy planes, observing the loss of many of his squadron's planes and crews, and making it back to base when his plane was damaged. Boecking and his crew survived and all were able to return home safely. "I found that journal entries gave great insight into the day-to-day lives of those who fought with the 8th Air force during the Second World War. I also thought the author's notes do an exceptional job of clarifying and elaborating on Boecking's story." - Alan Renga, Archivist. San Diego Air & Space Museum. The pilot's Mission Journal "accurately reflects the incredible dangers, moments of terror, and unbelievable courage of those young men who flew those Flying Fortresses through ground flak and fighter planes to reach their targets. If you want to truly understand how the war looked from the cockpit of a Flying Fortress through the eyes of a 22 year old Nebraskan, knowing that any mission could be his last, 'A Pilots View of World War II is a real treasure.'" - Robert Floyd, Austin Texas. Vietnam Veteran, 101st Airborne Division

Excerpt from The Ascent of Denali (Mount McKinley): A Narrative of the First Complete Ascent of the Highest Peak in North AmericaForefront in this book, because forefront in the author's heart and desire, must stand a plea for the restoration to the greatest mountain in North America of its immemorial native name. If there be any prestige or authority in such matter from the accomplishment of a first complete ascent, "if there be any virtue, if there be any praise," the author values it chiefly as it may give weight to this plea.It is now little more than seventeen years ago that a prospector penetrated from the south into the neighborhood of this mountain, guessed its height with remarkable accuracy at twenty thousand feet, and, ignorant of any name that it already bore, placed upon it the name of the Republican candidate for President of the United States at the approaching election - William McKinley. No voice was raised in protest, for the Alaskan Indian is inarticulate and such white men as knew the old name were absorbed in the search for gold.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The remarkable true story of a career GI’s leading role in a secret radar mission, the resolve he demonstrates during an attack on his mountaintop camp—-and the 42-year quest for America to recognize his actions.

In 1967, after 16 years in uniform, Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Dick Etchberger is starting to make plans for a post-military life when he is invited to participate in a clandestine Vietnam War mission. There’s a catch, though: he must accept the assignment before he’s told of the location. Etchberger quickly agrees to this condition and is sent to Southeast Asia with two dozen other Air Force technicians to run a secret radar site atop a remote peak.

Posing as civilian contract workers, the men use an early computer to direct pilots to hit targets with greater accuracy regardless of visibility. Their operation, Project Heavy Green, has the blessing of the highest levels of Washington, D.C., as President Lyndon B. Johnson hopes improved bombing results will coax North Vietnam to negotiate an end to the war.

The mission is initially successful, though the team’s presence on the mountain is known almost immediately. The enemy soon launches a bizarre aerial assault on the camp. It is largely ineffective. A later ground attack, however, is not and results in the Air Force’s greatest loss of ground personnel in the war. Etchberger’s actions lead to the survival of three men, but not his own.

With eyewitnesses to Etchberger’s courage, why did it take four decades for the U.S. to recognize him with the nation’s highest award for military valor? Because they took place in Laos, a country officially neutral toward the neighboring war and off-limits to outside forces. Presenting him the Medal of Honor was impossible as it would have exposed U.S. presence there. It would take decades—and an improbable pathway—to reach this objective.

So begins the second phase of this remarkable story.

About the Author

Author Matt Proietti is a former community newspaper editor and a longtime military public affairs professional. Like Dick Etchberger, he reached the Air Force's highest enlisted rank of chief master sergeant, though Proietti did so as a reservist. He is a 4-time recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest honor in Defense Department journalism.

The book grew out of Proietti's 2008 assignment running the Air Force news team in Washington, D.C. He painstakingly researched Chief Etchberger's life and career, interviewing Air Force personnel involved with the Laos mission, talking with Dick's friends and family, and researching the historical and political context of the mission at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.

The New England native lives in Northern California with his wife, Varina. This is his first book.

By Keith When Matt sent me my signed copy of "At All Costs" he told me "It's just straightforward, shoe leather reporting that doesn't get in the way of the story." That is true but it is also a lot more. I finished the book in only a few hours and started reading it again to pick out those additional stories I would have to read about. The story is complete in and of itself, but it also helps open the door to find other tails of the men and women who served in Southeast Asia. My Father was Air Force reserve, my uncle served 33 years in the Air Force starting in the Vietnam era and retired from the Air Force just shy of 25 years and I had never heard the entire story of Chief Etchberger. Matt's book connects a lot of dots about the Air Force's involvement during that time.Just about every military reader or movie viewer knows about "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young," or the Green Berets, even the Air Forces role in the sky, but few know the Air Force mission on the ground and Matt's book helps shed light on some little known events, and men who died in the service of their nation. The story of getting the medal awarded is just as interesting as the reason Chief Etchberger was awarded the medal.Well done CMSgt Matt Proietti, well done.

An outstanding tribute to a Great American By Raymond Sarracino This a compelling, and fast read of a remarkable period in our nation's military history. While the focus is on the principle subject, Chief Etchberger, the snapshot of the period, tactics, and technology is superb! This is an outstanding piece of work that shines as a tribute to the people who fought a war that the nation appears to have preferred to forget. I'm looking forward to Matt Proietti's next book, which I hope will be forthcoming soon!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Military Biography Actually Worth Reading By Jd Walter A refreshing approach to an important subject. Not given to hyperbole, like the better part of military accounts written in the last 15 years, Proietti brings an old school journalist savvy to the story of USAF Chief Master Sergeant Richard Etchberger, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. 'Etch' is the kind of man you want your son to grow up to be, not because he did something heroic, but because he wouldn't have seen it that way. Proietti's story telling is as honest and deliberate as 'Etch' himself and I get the sense this is exactly how he would have told it. Well researched and delivered, this not only a compelling story, but an impressive first entry by Proiette.
