My Ántonia, by Willa Cather

Amazon.com Review It seems almost sacrilege to infringe upon a book as soulful and rich as Willa Cather's My Ántonia by offering comment. First published in 1918, and set in Nebraska in the late 19th century, this tale of the spirited daughter of a Bohemian immigrant family planning to farm on the untamed land ("not a country at all but the material out of which countries are made") comes to us through the romantic eyes of Jim Burden. He is, at the time of their meeting, newly orphaned and arriving at his grandparents' neighboring farm on the same night her family strikes out to make good in their new country. Jim chooses the opening words of his recollections deliberately: "I first heard of Ántonia on what seemed to be an interminable journey across the great midland plain of North America," and it seems almost certain that readers of Cather's masterpiece will just as easily pinpoint the first time they heard of Ántonia and her world. It seems equally certain that they, too, will remember that moment as one of great light in an otherwise unremarkable trip through the world.

Ántonia, who, even as a grown woman somewhat downtrodden by circumstance and hard work, "had not lost the fire of life," lies at the center of almost every human condition that Cather's novel effortlessly untangles. She represents immigrant struggles with a foreign land and tongue, the restraints on women of the time (with which Cather was very much concerned), the more general desires for love, family, and companionship, and the great capacity for forbearance that marked the earliest settlers on the frontier.

As if all this humanity weren't enough, Cather paints her descriptions of the vastness of nature--the high, red grass, the road that "ran about like a wild thing," the endless wind on the plains--with strokes so vivid as to make us feel in our bones that we've just come in from a walk on that very terrain ourselves. As the story progresses, Jim goes off to the University in Lincoln to study Latin (later moving on to Harvard and eventually staying put on the East Coast in another neat encompassing of a stage in America's development) and learns Virgil's phrase "Optima dies ... prima fugit" that Cather uses as the novel's epigraph. "The best days are the first to flee"--this could be said equally of childhood and the earliest hours of this country in which the open land, much like My Ántonia, was nothing short of a rhapsody in prairie sky blue. --Melanie Rehak

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up--In Jim Burden's accounting of his life with, and without, Antonia Shimerda, listeners are transported to the hardscrabble Nebraska prairie and the rural immigrant experience. When Jim first sees the Shimerda family, immigrants from Bohemia, disembarking from the same train that is taking him West to live with his grandparents, he has no idea the impact they will have on his life. Nostalgically, he remembers the good and bad times they had on their respective farms and creates his portrait of Antonia, an independent and tough survivor. The brief biography of author Willa Cather at the beginning of the CD explains how her life mirrors Antonia's life in many ways, helping listeners understand the context of the story. Patrick Lawlor's rich, fluid voice lends an air of sophistication to Burden, reinforcing the class structure inherent at the beginning of the 20th century. Lawlor's attempts to create voices for the characters often falls flat. Since the novel is Burden's reminiscence, it would have been better told in Burden's voice alone. Since My Antonia continues to be a staple in many English curriculums, this is a good audiobook for schools and public libraries to have available.--Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Cloyce Smith When Willa Cather was writing "My Antonia," she visited her friend, the journalist and war correspondent Elizabeth Sergeant, grabbed an old apothecary jar filled with flowers, set it in the center of an antique table, and explained: "I want my new heroine to be like this--like a rare object in the middle of a table, which one may examine from all sides. . . . I want her to stand out--like this--like this--because she is the story."This anecdote (recounted in James Woodress's biography of Cather) sums up almost exactly the technique that makes her novel both unique and unusual. Instead of writing the story from her heroine's point of view, or from the point of view of an omniscient narrator, Cather instead creates a bystander, the likeable and somewhat innocent Jim Burden, who has written down a series of memories where his and Antonia's lives intersect; "My Antonia" is a biography through the mask of autobiography. While this is Jim's story as much as it is Antonia's (she is barely mentioned at all in Book III), we are ultimately studying a much-loved thing of beauty from "all sides"--from the distance separating it and the observer.Although "My Antonia" relates a number of exciting, sentimental, horrifying, and even scandalous incidents (none of which will be divulged here), Cather very deliberately chose to write a character novel rather than an action story. Many of the book's pivotal "events" happen offstage; we learn what has happened only when Jim hears about Antonia or runs into her at a gathering or stops by her home. Such a detached approach is a departure from that used by many of the American naturalists (e.g., Dreiser, Lewis) writing during this period, yet her book is surely a model of realism. As Jim writes when he notes his reluctance to visit Antonia when they are both grown, "Some memories are realities, and are better than anything that can ever happen to one again."As with all of Cather's novels, the prairie town of Black Hawk (which, is of course, Cather's hometown of Red Cloud), is populated with a variety of hirelings and homesteaders, dreamers and pretenders, romantics and scoundrels. (Cather seldom sketched a character as downright wicked as the would-be rapist Wick Cutter.) But none of the townsfolk outshine either the affectionate, if platonic, rapport between Jim and Antonia or the unforgettable portrayal of Antonia herself.

Brick When I went to write the review of Cather's work, I was surprised to find that most of the reviews were written by high school students who were required to read the book. The strengths of "My Antonia", in my opinion, would not be obvious to most teenagers. Taken at face value, as a fictional story of the struggles of Bohemian immigrants to the mid-west, the story has merits which probably underlie its popularity among secondary teachers. However, that is not what makes this book special. Simply put, both the characters and setting of this novel are beautiful. Cather clearly loved the land she was writing about, and her passion for the farm country of her youth flowed through her writings. Her narrator, Jim, reveals the life of the immigrant Antonia, his childhood friend. Though most of the book is about their childhood together, it is written from Jim's view as an adult. This is tremendously important, as Jim's observations are clearly bear a mark of maturity that would be out-of-place if the book were written from the point-of-view of a child. Perhaps this is what many teenagers miss. Few of them have experienced the profound bittersweet feelings adults have when looking back upon their youth. These emotions were entwined through the novel from beginning to end, forming a scaffold upon which the story was told. To miss them is to miss everything that makes this novel great, rather than just historical fiction.

By Jana L.Perskie In 1882, when author Willa Cather was nine years-old, her family left their home in Back Creek Valley, Virginia, and moved to Nebraska, near the settler country in Red Cloud where they farmed a homestead. Ms. Cather, often thought of as a chronicler of the pioneer American West, frequently drew on her memories of prairie culture and her own personal experiences. She wrote about the themes closest to her heart. Of primary importance was the drama of the immigrant struggling to survive in a new world, epitomized here in "My Antonia." In this extraordinary novel, Miss Cather weaves together the story of Antonia Shimerda, an immigrant girl from Bohemia who represents the optimism, determination and pure grit that newcomers to America needed to make a successful life, and that of American-born Jim Burden, our narrator.Burden, a successful and cultured East-coast lawyer, is returning to his childhood home in Blackhawk, Nebraska for a visit. On the long train ride, he reminisces with an unnamed friend about the place where they had both grown up and about the people they knew - especially their dear friend Antonia, "who seemed to mean to us the country, the conditions, the whole adventure of our childhood."When young Jim Burden was orphaned at age ten, he left his native Virginia to live with his grandparents on their farm, just outside of Blackhawk. At almost the same time that Jim arrived, the Shimerda family settled on their land. Mrs. Shimerda had argued effectively for a move to America so that the children, especially Ambrosch, the eldest son, would have the chance to make a better life for themselves, with more possibilities of moving up in the social hierarchy and of acquiring wealth. The Bohemian newcomers were the Burden's closest neighbors. Fourteen year-old Antonia Shimerda, the eldest daughter became a close friend of Jim's. He was immediately drawn to her warmth and friendliness. When Antonia's father, a sensitive, refined man, discovered that Jim was educated he asked the boy to teach his daughter to speak English. "Te-e-ach, te-e-ach my Án-tonia!" he told/asked Mrs. Burden. Together the two young people worked the land and explored the glorious prairie. And Antonia began to learn English.Unfortunately, Antonia's studies came to an end with her father's tragic suicide. The man missed his native land terribly and was not able to accept his family's extreme poverty or the demands of his wife and son. When he lost his only friends, he sunk into a deep depression from which he was not able to escape. After Mr. Shimerda's death, Antonia had to work even harder, performing the heaviest, most physically demanding chores, just to keep the farm from going under. She was not able to go to school with Jim, and began to slowly lose the refined ways she had learned from her dad.The author describes Antonia's life as Jim perceives it, and from information he gathers from others about the long periods when he did not have contact with her. Their widely different positions in society dictated their life choices and their fortunes. And their lives, their personal histories, parallel the changes and the transformation of the Great Plains. When Antonia and Jim explored the Nebraskan wilderness, it was a wilderness as far as the eye could see. "There seemed to be nothing to see; no fences, no creeks or trees, no hills or fields. If there was a road, I could not make it out in the faint starlight. There was nothing but land: not a country at all, but the material out of which countries are made. No, there was nothing but land--slightly undulating..." And, "I had the feeling that the world was left behind, that we had got over the edge of it, and were outside man's jurisdiction. I had never before looked up at the sky when there was not a familiar mountain ridge against it. But this was the complete dome of heaven, all there was of it." When Jim makes his return trip by train, years later, everything had changed.Willa Cather's prose is straightforward, the narrative is deceptively simple and crystal clear. Her characters are complex and the wonderful, richly textured descriptions of the landscape and life on the plains make reading the novel pure pleasure. The author also captures the interior landscape of her characters with great perception and sensitivity. This is a great work of fiction which depicts a people, and a place in time, which only remain on the pages of a book, preserved vividly by Willa Cather.I prefer to purchase Enriched Classics fiction whenever available. I find they offer readers more affordable editions of great works of literature with supplementary critical text. "My Antonia" contains: a concise introduction by Editor Cynthia Brantley Johnson that gives readers important background information; a chronology of Willa Cather's life and work; a timeline of significant events that provides the book's historical context; an outline of key themes and plot points; detailed explanatory notes; critical analysis, including contemporary and modern perspectives of "My Antonia;" discussion questions ideal for book club conversations; a recommended related bibliography.H.L. Mencken wrote, "No romantic novel ever written in America, by man or woman, is one half so beautiful as 'My Antonia.'"JANA

The Britain of the Roman Occupation is, in a way, an age that is dark to us. While the main events from 55 BC to AD 410 are little disputed, and the archaeological remains of villas, forts, walls, and cities explain a great deal, we lack a clear sense of individual lives. This book is the first to infuse the story of Britannia with a beating heart, the first to describe in detail who its inhabitants were and their place in our history.   A lifelong specialist in Romano-British history, Guy de la Bédoyère is the first to recover the period exclusively as a human experience. He focuses not on military campaigns and imperial politics but on individual, personal stories. Roman Britain is revealed as a place where the ambitious scramble for power and prestige, the devout seek solace and security through religion, men and women eke out existences in a provincial frontier land. De la Bédoyère introduces Fortunata the slave girl, Emeritus the frustrated centurion, the grieving father Quintus Corellius Fortis, and the brilliant metal worker Boduogenus, among numerous others. Through a wide array of records and artifacts, the author introduces the colorful cast of immigrants who arrived during the Roman era while offering an unusual glimpse of indigenous Britons, until now nearly invisible in histories of Roman Britain.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Vignettes and glimpses of Roman Britain By JPS I was wondering, at first, whether this book was yet another history Roman Britain, despite the fact that the author has already contributed his own one. It is not, or, to be more accurate, this book is something a bit different and more original. It does review the slightly more than three and a half centuries during which there was a Roman Britain and the history of this remote province of the Empire does form the background of the his book. However, it only provides the context for presenting chronologically and analysing the main findings discovered through archaeology, whether tombstones, dedications, treasure hoards, pottery, the unique tablets found in one of Hadrian Wall’s forts and so on.The book is entertaining and generally well written. It is also fascinating because of the tantalising glimpses that it offers of real lives, and of some of their every-day concerns. The author is also careful to insist on the limits of the exercise and shows how easy it is to read too much into most of these scattered and partial remains of a distant past. One point of particular interest was to show how difficult, and often impossible, it is to discover the ethnic origins of those dedicating tombstones or making religious offerings. This is because the names are mostly latinised. There are some rare cases where it is possible to identify “Celtic” names although, as the author underlines, these can often belong to Gallo-Roman emigrants just as much as they can be Briton. Other names, often, but not always, linked with the army can come from all over the Empire as far as Thrace or Syria.A related point made by the author is that this makes it impossible to assess whether, and to what extent, the various tribes and populations assimilated. Some did, particularly among the elites and these, together with settlers from other parts of the Empire were the inhabitants of villas and towns. Together with the army, with totalled between 30000 and 40000, and those whose living was linked it, the author seems to suggest that perhaps 10% to 15% of a population of up to three million may have been thoroughly Romanised. The daily life of the rest may have been largely unaffected. However, even this is largely an assumption since archaeology is about finding part of what has survived, and the conclusions that can be drawn from this are rapidly limited. This is perhaps another valuable point made by this book. There is only so much that can be learned from the remains of the past, however much fascinating they might be. As shown by the author through multiple examples, it is very easy and rather dangerous to draw “conclusions” (which, in reality, are no more than assumptions, at best) from such scattered and limited evidence. One limit, perhaps, is that this is probably not the book to start with for someone who knows very little on Rome and Roman Britain although anyone liking investigations and treasure hunts might enjoy reading it despite this. Also, there might be one or two shortcuts when presenting a quick overview of the history of the Roman Empire in order to provide context for the various finds. One example is that contrary to what the text seems to imply, Odenathus Lord of Palmyra did not initially take over the Roman East and usurp Roman authority. He seems, at least initially, to have been very careful not to do so.Four strong stars.

In venturing this afternoon to address an audience accustomed to listen to those whose positive authority is universally recognized, and in taking for my theme a subject not, like theirs, distinct in its definitions or consecrated by tradition and history, I am aware that I perform what you may, if you choose, call an act of blameworthy audacity. My subject is chimerical, vague, and founded on conjectures which you may well believe yourselves at least as well fitted as I am to propound.

Haig's Intelligence is an important study of Douglas Haig's controversial command during the First World War. Based on extensive new research, it addresses a perennial question about the British army on the Western Front between 1916 and 1918: why did they think they were winning? Jim Beach reveals how the British perceived the German army through a study of the development of the British intelligence system, its personnel and the ways in which intelligence was gathered. He also examines how intelligence shaped strategy and operations by exploring the influence of intelligence in creating perceptions of the enemy. He shows for the first time exactly what the British knew about their opponent, when and how and, in so doing, sheds significant new light on continuing controversies about the British army's conduct of operations in France and Belgium and the relationship between Haig and his chief intelligence officer, John Charteris.

Haig's Intelligence: GHQ and the German Army, 1916-1918 (Cambridge Military Histories), by Dr Jim Beach

Review "The word 'seminal' is all too often applied to books, but in the case of Haig's Intelligence it is thoroughly deserved ... [Beach's] findings about Haig's relations with his intelligence officers feed directly into one of the most studied and controversial aspects of the field, and need to be integrated into existing scholarship on British high command in the First World War." Gary Sheffield, War in History"Beach's superbly researched and carefully argued study is a rejoinder to ... blinkered interpretations of the BEF's war and the role of the army's intelligence system in shaping it ... Beach has written what will come to be seen as the definitive work on the BEF's intelligence system." James Kitchen, Twentieth Century British History

About the Author Dr Jim Beach is Senior Lecturer in Twentieth-Century History at the University of Northampton. He is also Secretary of the Army Records Society.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A seminal piece of work By Robbo War is an uncertain business. Unlike a board game, where an opponent’s pieces are laid out for all to see, war is waged with imprecise information, some contradictory, some incorrect, and muddied by the enemy’s deception measures. Haig’s Intelligence: GHQ and the German Army 1916 -1918 is a seminal piece of work that sheds considerable light on the British Army’s efforts on the Western Front to clear the fog, and provide commanders with an estimation of the German forces opposing them on which to base their operational decisions. The depth and breadth of Dr Beach’s research is breathtaking, as evidenced by the copious footnotes on each page. From it he draws a balanced and objective view of this little studied, but important, contribution to winning the Great War. Indeed, it offers a greater scope to the subject than the title suggests.Presented in two parts, the first addresses the development of the British intelligence organisation from its embryonic, pre-war beginnings, through its growth during the war to the armistice. Admirably presented, it provides a fascinating insight into this neglected area of the Great War, including the leading personalties, their disagreements and influence, the development and evolution of the principal collection means, and their relative value in providing information on the German Army, and broader strategic issues. The analysis of the raw material into the finished intelligence product, a process which steadily improved as the war progressed, rounds out a thoroughly informative portrayal of a system in which many innovations taken for granted today saw the light of day, including signals intelligence and air photography. While the former developed slowly, the latter mushroomed into an astonishing 900,000 prints a month in May 1918. In the shadowy world of espionage many of us are familiar with agents parachuted into occupied France during the Second World War - Dr Beach highlights this first occurred behind the Western Front, together with the less predictable means of inserting them using balloons! The work of these networks provided valuable information on German troop movements. The second part discusses how the intelligence product influenced operational decisions, and particularly Haig, during 1916 to 1918. Pitched primarily at strategic intelligence, what emerges is the focus on German morale, both on the home front and in the German Army, the losses they sustained, and the means by which they were calculated, including captured paybooks. Together this information fed assessments on the size and locations of German reserves behind the Western Front - indicators of their capacity to defend a specific sector, or as shown in 1918 the size and location of their offensives, - but more importantly in Haig’s mind, their ability to sustain an effective army. Dr Beach demonstrates how these assessments influenced decisions, providing a much more rounded picture on the complexities of operational planning. While not always correct, the British intelligence system, both collection and analysis, steadily improved, and by 1918 was producing reasonably accurate assessments of German capabilities and intentions.Central to this is the controversial Brigadier General John Charteris, Haig’s Head of Intelligence, generally accepted as providing his chief with overly optimistic reports on the German Army’s morale and imminent collapse. Beach delivers an objective view, suggesting that while Charteris was overly optimistic at times this was not always the case, and part of the problem was Haig’s own optimistic views. Objective, fair and balanced in its analysis, meticulously researched, and clear in its presentation Haig’s Intelligence is a welcome addition to the historiography of the Great War. It will appeal to those wishing to gain a more informed insight into the complexities of the Great War, than the shallow and fallacious works that have shaped the popular perception over the past 60 years.

The history of World War One is interesting, the past has our future. This book is excellent; in my view it is for the research, balance, and insight of the Author.

Craig Smith is an excellent young writer and he spins yarns about the history of Tennessee football that even non-Vol fans will find fascinating. I thought I knew all of the old stories of this program but there was a lot in this book I didn't already know. If you need any more convincing, none other than Coach Fulmer wrote the foreword. Buy this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An excellent map By TravelerBobDC This map was my treasured possession over 11 days of driving through Provence and the Cote d'Azur. It's pretty much all here, down to very small roads. My difficulties were not with the map but with the relatively poor signage in that part of France (relative to the US). For example, all the route numbers appear on the map, but in Provence route numbers only occasionally appear on signs. So you have to keep in your head or write on a piece of paper the list of towns in the direction that you want to head, and then look for signs to those towns.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great reference when driving or planning trips! loved that it's tear-resistant By pns pre-internet and during the heydey of AAA maps, i wish we had this plastic-coated maps! maybe they existed before and i was just too cheap to know haha but, yeah, it was really good to have a tear-resistant map.the map itself is 5-stars.however, if you are getting this to use for a driving trip in the area, you should get a gps. i think you will ruin your vacation if you try to navigate provence using this map. we found that street names change a lot in the area. not a criticism against this map at all; just a comment on navigating the place. though gps turned out to be expensive (the one we brought from the US didn't work so we had to include gps in our rental), after the trip, we said it was worth it. the driving was hassle-free and we ended up enjoying the area and driving a lot.this is good to use so you can have a reference while driving around or planning your trips. it's good-to-have.

I don't know how my family came across owning this book, It's propably from one of my grandparents. The story is about Lovey Mary, a rebellious little girl who lives at an orphanage. She is put in charge of a 2 year old boy named Tommy. Tommy's mother comes to get him and Lovey runs away with him and raises him.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. delightful story.... By retroredux Published in 1903.Charming story about an Orphan Girl of 15, called Lovey Mary, who is put in charge of another ward's baby, Tommy, when she is thirteen. The "wicked girl" who is Tommy's mother comes back two years later to claim him and this is where Lovey Mary and Tommy's adventures begin. Mary and Tommy run away and end up in Cabbage Patch-which is hinted to be the poor side of the town. Mary and Tommy are helped by Miss Hazy, Miss Wiggs (of Miss Wiggs and The Cabbage Patch) and many other residents of Cabbage Patch. If you like humor ala' Ma and Pa Kettle, then you'll enjoy this charming tale.PS-be forewarned-as many books of the era, the "n" word is used once.4 stars.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. WONDERFUL! By S. Bosley I would give this book 10 stars if I possibly could! It is a wonderful book...It follows the life of Lovey Mary, a young woman who claims "it ain`t hard to be good when folks love you." She lives at "the home", where a young boy, Tommy, is entrusted to her care. When she finds out that Tommy`s "wicked" mother is coming to claim him, taking him away from Mary, she is quick to take action. I won`t spoil anything, but it is truely a delighful, humorous read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. important early journal of Hawaii By bogdog This is a nice clear copy of an important book that's not otherwise in print. The text is sharp and easily readable. Many of the illustrations are a bit dark and/or blurry as is to be expected from the copy process. This volume consists of excerpts from the journals of Archibald Menzies covering his three visits to the Sandwich Islands in 1792-94 as Vancouver's surgeon and naturalist. It has 6 pages of index and 199 pages of text.Menzies spent more time ashore than most of the other crew. His observations of the land and people of Hawaii are those of a scholar rather than a naval officer and contain many insights not found in Vancouver's Voyages including many more Hawaiian names. If you're reading about Hawaiian history or Vancouver's voyages, this is a wonderful companion book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. matchmakers come in all shapes and sizes By Richard Chappell At the beginning of this story, Mrs. Durant is complaining to a friend about her step-daughter. Constance is rich, beautiful, 23-years-old and unmarried. It seems that Mrs. Durant's own daughters cannot attract the attention of the young men because Constance outshines them. If only Constance would marry, then maybe Mrs. Durant's girls would have a chance.I have to admit that I almost didn't make it through the beginning. It was rather tedious. But after plowing through it, the story picks up. While on her way home from running errands, Constance's carriage runs over a young boy. When Constance learns that it will take quite a while for the ambulance to arrive, she insists that she will take the boy to the hospital in her carriage. And it is there that Constance meets a young doctor.I think my rating for this book would be 2 1/2 stars. It was a little shallow. The readers didn't get to see the feelings and thoughts of the characters. And the accent of the little boy was difficult to understand. I don't regret reading the story, but I don't think I'll seek out any of the author's fictional work. Also, the description of the book says that it's 146 pages. No. It's more like 40 pages.- posted by Poore Richard's wyfe

25 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Please fix the spacing By Daedalus I don't get it: why can't Kindle editions maintain the original line structure and spacing? Running everything together and sort of randomly spacing here and there ruins the cadence and readability of the poem.

Spacing problems ruin the rhythm By Virginia Sams I bought the $4 kindle edition instead of the 99 cent one, thinking it would have corrected the spacing problems of the earlier version. I also assumed, incorrectly, that the book would contain a selection of poems and a table of contents. I was sorely disappointed to find only two poems, with the lines run together. I'm a kindle fan, but in this case, I recommend a paper version.
