1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. God cannot lie, neither should you. By Amazon Customer H.C. Trumbull was a prisoner of war during the Civil War and his captured cohorts devised a plan to escape that hinged on him lying to the guards. They put their confidence in the wrong man since he refused to go along with the plan because he said it is always wrong to lie. Needless to say, he was not the most popular man in the hoosegow and his cell mates failed at their attempts to persuade him that sometimes it is justifiable to lie, especially to Confederates and especially when lying would free you from said Confederates. Trumbull, at the time, felt it was wrong but wasn't settled that he had done the right thing, so he determined if and when he was released from prison, he would devote himself to coming to the conclusion of the matter. The title gives away the ending. You know his conclusions going in but get to benefit from his search as he goes as deep into the subject as a person probably could and quite frankly, deeper than most people really want to go - down to if it is possible to lie to a fish if you are using artificial bait. There are all sorts of scenarios he goes over, i.e. is it a lie to leave lights on in your home to pretend you are home, is it a lie to throw a change-up, deceiving the batter (I think that is the illustration, but I could be mistaken - which, by the way, wouldn't be a lie would it?). There are several others, that gave me a chuckle, but I got the point when he asked if you can lie to your horse, and if you can, should you?Trumbull gives some interesting anthropological information concerning tribes and peoples and religions all over the world, looking for a group that did not believe that lying is wrong. According to his research, he couldn't find a society that accepted lying in their morality. He also gives the Christian history of the argument and that this has been debated since the days of the early Christians, which I thought was very interesting. His point is basically since God cannot lie, neither can you. He addressed the common objections such as Rahab (brother Proctor jogged my memory of the book) and the lying spirits in I Kings 22 and gives a sufficient answer, in my opinion. However, he does make distinctions by defining what actually constitutes a lie. For example, if you have no right to the information, I don't have the obligation to give it to you. If you are deceived by your lack of information, it is not my duty to make sure you are not deceived by telling all I know. If you are the goodman of the house, you don't have to make sure to reveal when you are going to be the most vulnerable to theft. So it is vital to tell the truth, but it is not vital nor wise to tell all the truth in all situations in a pearls before swine sort of way.

My Ántonia was enthusiastically received in 1918 when it was first published. It was considered a masterpiece and placed Cather in the forefront of women novelists. Today, it is considered as her first masterpiece. Cather was praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting. It brought place forward almost as if it were one of the characters, while at the same time playing upon the universality of the emotions, which in turn promoted regional American literature as a valid part of mainstream literature. While interpretations vary, My Ántonia is clearly an elegy[citation needed] to those families who built new lives west of the Mississippi River and highlights the role of women pioneers in particular. Cather also makes a number of comments concerning her views on women's rights and there are many disguised sexual metaphors in the text.

My Antonia, by Willa Cather

About the Author A Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Willa Cather s work was profoundly influenced by her upbringing in rural Nebraska. During her young adulthood Cather proved herself intelligent and capable, initially training for a career as a medical doctor, but discovered a love of, and talent for, writing while attending the University of Nebraska. Following graduation, Cather worked as a journalist for several women s magazines before becoming a high school teacher; an opportunity work as an editor at McClure s provided Cather with her first chance to publish as the magazine serialized her first novel, Alexander s Bridge, to critical acclaim. This was soon followed by works that have since become best-loved American classics, including My ?ntonia, The Song of the Lark, and her Pulitzer-Prize winner, One of Ours. Cather died in 1947 at the age of 73.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Story and Great Writing By Edward F. Weber In the published letters between Holmes (Oliver Wendell, Jr., Supreme Court Justice) and Einstein (Lewis, Ameican diplomat) there is joint approbation for Willa Cather's "My Antonia." Good enough for them; good enough for me, I figured. And how I agree with them! If it did nothing else this book would be worth the reading just for the window it opens onto Nebraska farm life at the turn of the 19th century as seen through the lives of an 11 year old boy,Jim, and a girl, Antonia, 4 years his senior. But it is so much more than just a description of life hacked and carved out of the sod of the corn fields. It tells a tale of life-long friendships, bonding, love, heartache, and the triumph of the spirit. As the characters mature the book rings with a resonance of feelings that brings to mind the marvelous "Suite Francaise" (Irene Nemerovsky). Willa Cather demonstrates her ability to weave a wonderful story that tugged at my heart.

The Register, by William D. Howells

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

Excerpt from The Rage of Islam: An Account of the Massacre of Christians by the Turks in PersiaA Thrilling story is this, written by my longtime friend and Christian brother, Rev. Yonan H. Shahbaz, and entitled The Rage of Islam.Of this notable narrative the author and his estimable wife were no small part. One cannot know Mr. Shahbaz as I have known him, during many years, without admiring him and loving him as a manly man and a sincere Christian. The author of this book has been wise in giving us a reasonably full description of Persia. To most readers this country is largely a terra incognita. This land of Southwestern Asia is called by its inhabitants Iran. This is the native name of Persia. The word is derived from the legendary history of the Persian race.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Huge Portions of Blacked Out History Need to Emerge By Michael Wilken Though unique in time and place, Iran 1915, this story could have been voiced by tens of millions of Christian victims, had they survived the hatred and violence of the past 1400 years of Mohammadism. The Assyrian holocaust survived by the author is just one segment of that dark history of Islam. A history potentially massive in volume, that has been shunned, unrecorded, denied and blacked out, where past societies have been so thoroughly ravaged, little remains that they even existed. Here one unsilenced victim, "with a trembling pen" relived what he had experienced.

Think "Titanic" in space By Librarian "The Star Lord" is the name of an ill-omened, luxury passenger rocket on its maiden voyage through the vast realms of outer space to a distant planet when it meets disaster. Sound familiar? It's supposed to. This is the Titanic story retooled as a science-fiction tale. Of course there are no iceburgs in space, so what threatens to cause its demise? No, it's not a meteor. You'll have to read this free, public domain novella to find out. And I won't reveal just how far the parallelism extends, but it's the correlation of details and events between the actual Titanic's journey and those of this fictitious spacecraft that makes this story so interesting and dramatic--but also (in places) somewhat predictable. Nevertheless, for being a pulp SF novella, this is surprisingly well-done and would make a terrific, inexpensive, made-for-TV movie on the SyFy channel. (But you need not be into SF to enjoy this very entertaining tale.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A cute story By LeRoy A nice read, though not a classic. Good twists in the story line. A tired old theme of corrupt corrupting the weak willed.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed this story By Linda Tippit I enjoyed this story. The plot was engaging, but the characters truly made the story shine. You could feel real affection for some characters and true disdain for others. I would recommend this story for anyone that enjoys a good story. It is not just for those that enjoy science fiction.

Married a mere five months to the beautiful Lady Ada Thetford, he calls her to his deathbed and sends everyone else away. "I have been a villain, Ada," he admits, "the greatest villain on earth to you." For the next few hours, Lady Thetford listens to her husband's confession. Never once does she falter, never does she stir or speak; but her face grows whiter than her dress, and her great dark eyes dilate with a horror too intense for words. And what is this great secret that gives one chills just to think about? You'll have to read the book to find out, but I promise: If you love melodrama and unexpected twists and turns, it'll be a fun ride.
