Smith (1911-81) was a well known short story and sci-fi novel writer in the ‘40s and ‘50s.He wrote with the very distinctive style that characterizes the best short stories published in emblematic sci-fi magazines such as “Galaxy”, “Astounding Science Fiction”, “Fantastic Universe”, etc. It was a dynamic mixture of adventures, romance, humor and original situations.“History Repeats” is a short story about a rescue team constituted by Peter Hawley of the Extraterrestrial Service and Buregarde an intelligent (and big) Terrestrial dog. They are in search of a kidnapped damsel and will turn Xanabar upside down to find her.The author treats this anecdote with humor and skill giving way to a very readable short tale.Reviewed by Max Yofre.

For some reason the desert scene before Lucy Bostil awoke varying emotions—a sweet gratitude for the fullness of her life there at the Ford, yet a haunting remorse that she could not be wholly content—a vague loneliness of soul—a thrill and a fear for the strangely calling future, glorious, unknown. She longed for something to happen. It might be terrible, so long as it was wonderful. This day, when Lucy had stolen away on a forbidden horse, she was eighteen years old. The thought of her mother, who had died long ago on their way into this wilderness, was the one drop of sadness in her joy. Lucy loved everybody at Bostil's Ford and everybody loved her. She loved all the horses except her father's favorite racer, that perverse devil of a horse, the great Sage King.

It's basically a story about a young woman back in the 1800s, who meets a young man and how their relationship grows around a wild horse he caught and she tamed.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Descriptive landscape By kiz Zane Grey is forever a painter of western landscape. His descriptions of mountain trails, sagebrush and western topography allow the reader to be transported to America's frontier heritage. There is limited suspense in the developing romance between characters, but you always know that strong personalities prevail and good triumphs over evil. I enjoyed revisiting Wildfire on the Kindle.

The way nature is described so clearly, how you feel the emotions of the people and the animals. I really couldn't put it down. I am now a great fan of Zane Grey.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the campaign written by generals and soldiers on both sides *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “Never had there been such an overwhelming victory during the Civil War - indeed, never in American military history.” - Wiley Ford’s comment on the Franklin-Nashville Campaign As Sherman began his infamous march to the sea, Lincoln instructed Grant to redirect General George H. Thomas’ efforts back to Tennessee to protect Union supply lines and stop the offensive mounted by Confederate general John Bell Hood. Hood had broken away from Atlanta and was trying to compel Sherman to follow him, thus diverting him from his intended path of destruction. With Sherman marching east toward the sea, he directed Thomas to try to block Hood around Nashville. In late November, the Army of the Ohio, being led by Thomas’ principal subordinate John Schofield, all but blindly stumbled into Hood’s forces, and it was only through luck that some of them had not been bottled up before they could regroup together. Receiving word of Union troop movement in the Nashville area, General Hood sent for his generals while attempting to hold off Schofield’s advance. Hood knew that if Schofield reached Thomas’ position, their combined armies would number more than twice his. Though the Confederates successfully blocked Schofield’s route to Nashville, the Union general managed to execute an all-night maneuver that brought him to Franklin, about 18 miles south of Nashville. On November 30, the Union army began digging in around Franklin, and that afternoon Hood ordered a frontal assault on the dug in Union army which deeply upset his own officers. After repeated frontal assaults failed to create a gap in the Union lines, Schofield withdrew his men across the river on the night of November 30, successfully escaping Hood’s army. Meanwhile, Hood had inflicted nearly 8,000 casualties upon his army (men the Confederacy could scarcely afford to lose), while the Union lost about a quarter of that. Despite practically wrecking his army, which was now only about 25,000 strong, Hood marched his battered army to a position outside Nashville, Tennessee, where he took up defensive positions while awaiting reinforcements from Texas. On December 1, General Thomas sent word to Grant that he had “retired to the fortifications around Nashville until I can get my cavalry equipped”, a reference to the fact that Forrest’s cavalry had more than double the manpower of the Union cavalry. But Thomas also added that “if Hood attacks our position, he would be seriously damaged, but if he makes no attack until our cavalry can be equipped, [I] or General Schofield will move against him at once.” The following day Grant wired back, “If Hood is permitted to remain quietly about Nashville, you will lose all the road back to Chattanooga, and possibly have to abandon the line of the Tennessee. Should he attack you it is all well; but if he does not, you should attack him before he fortifies. Arm and put in the trenches your quartermaster’s employees, citizens, etc.” Even with Grant constantly urging him forward, Thomas held back for nearly two weeks, partly because of a bad ice storm, and his delay nearly resulted in having Grant remove him from command. When it was clear reinforcements wouldn’t arrive by December 15, Thomas finally devised a complex two-pronged attack that feinted at Hood’s right flank while bringing overwhelming force on the left flank. During the two day battle, Thomas effectively destroyed Hood’s command, inflicting about 8,000 more Confederate casualties while losing less than half that. Upon reaching his headquarters at Tupelo, Mississippi, General Hood requested to be relieved of command rather than be removed in disgrace.

Read Ebook The Lone Star Ranger, by Zane Grey

The Lone Star Ranger is a Western novel published by Zane Grey in 1915. It follows the life of Buck Duane, a man who becomes an outlaw and then redeems himself in the eyes of the law. Buck Duane is the son of a famous outlaw. Though an outlaw is not always a criminal, if the Rangers say he is an outlaw, its just as bad – he's a hunted man. After killing a man, Duane is forced to 'go on the dodge'. Duane turns up at an outlaw's hideout, still revolting at the idea of outlawry. Worse still, all the men he kills haunt him, for years. At the outlaw hideout, he meets a kidnapped, beautiful young woman and desires to see her free. In the second part of the book, Duane joins the Rangers, who want him to clear the frontier of outlaws, in return for the governor's pardon of his illegal deeds. Pearl Zane Grey (1872–1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that were a basis for the Western genre in literature and the arts; he idealized the American frontier. Riders of the Purple Sage (1912) was his best-selling book. In addition to the commercial success of his printed works, they had second lives and continuing influence when adapted as films and television productions. As of 2012, 112 films, two television episodes, and a television series, Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theater, had been made that were based loosely on Grey's novels and short stories.

From AudioFile One sometimes forgets how skilled how skilled a writer Grey was; this is a two-part story of a youth turned gunman turned Texas Ranger. Gene Engene has a choppy vocal style; he is given to unexpected pauses, stresses in odd places, and vocalizations that are not entirely full but inject character all the same. The general pace is slow, but his Western cadences fit this Zane Grey oat opera rather well. Engene is effective in delivering distinctive men's voices, often harsh and guttural; he is not so competent with the women, who all sound pretty much the same. Still, readers/listeners of Westerns will generally like this sharply recorded, quality presentation. D.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A great adventure yarn By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson Practically born with a gun in his hand, it was inevitable that Buck Duane would end up a wanted man. But, even if not a peaceful man, Duane is an honorable one. And now, there is a highly respected Texas Ranger captain on his heels, and this Captain McNally wants a personal meeting with him. It’s been a long and hard life for Buck Duane, and he is no fool, not for the law and not for the outlaws.Zane Grey (1872-1939) was one of the giants of the Western genre, and this was his fourteenth novel published – by this time he was really hitting his stride. The book itself falls naturally into two parts, almost like two novellas published together. As you would expect with Zane Grey, the main character is tough and unrelenting, and the action is great. So, if you like a good Western, then you will like this book. It’s good, solid Zane Grey – which means that it’s a great adventure yarn that will keep you turning the pages.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. None By V. L. Smith This is the same story as Rustlers of Pecos County. The names are different and it starts with more of a history on the ranger but other than that the plot and most of the dialogue are exactly the same. Good thing it was free or I would be crying foul.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Mystery is always Alluring By Beth Soles Typically not the type of book I would read, however it was a page turner for me. To refer to the review by "A.Woman" who said there was no action in this book, I would disagree completely. I read a lot of Tom Clancy and such action books and actually found "The Lure of the Mask" to have a solid amount of adventure - if you have an imagination. I fence myself and could readily imagine the fighting and such that went on in the book or the cold New York fog and orange sun-warmed hill of Italy. To be honest I did have quite a few plot twists figured out before reading them, but I hardly find a book or movie I don't. The main character, Hilliard, I found the most interesting initially and where the interest in him started to go down, the author piques interest in the mysterious masked lady, aka, well you'd just have to read it!What made the book interesting is the writer's style and humor. I found myself smiling at times how on-target he was with witty observations of life, interactions between men and women, and etc. Certainly the style isn't "new" but it was refreshingly intelligent compared with what is published nowadays. In 1908 when it came out I don't know what type of book it would have been categorized as, but I enjoyed it for what(ever) it was. If you expect a "Rainbow Six" type of book, then yes you will be disappointed.

It is very well-written, and the characters are distinct and relatable. The story itself is fairly simple--a man journeys to find the woman he loves--but it is presented in a fresh and engaging manner. I would definitely recommend this book!

He is concerned that Britain is less nationalistic than he believes that it should be at that time.He is concerned about Britain and Germany blundering into a war, not starting one consciously. He has some thoughts on increasing the trust between Britain and Germany, and reducing the bad feelings. He believes that there is nothing that Germany has the Britain has and so Britain would not start a war. He is concerned about the decline in trust between countries, and Germany wanting to get more colonies around the world, and apparently viewing Britain as standing in Germany's way.He views England's Navy as its most important armed force, as it had been for centuries. Germany's naval build up has caused a building race in Europe in particular, as they go to build the new all big gun battleships modeled after the HMS Dreadnought. Incidentally he does not believe that the all big gun ships, were the medium caliber guns have been eliminated will necessarily turn out to be a good idea, as the medium size guns might provide more hits that the all big guns.He believes that since Germany has drastically expanded her army, Britain should as well. This would be a large change for Britain, and did not occur until after WW I was ongoing for a year or so.Interesting to see how an Englishman viewed his world five years before the start of WW I.

As of 2014 there were approximately one million American expatriates living in Mexico, many of whom bought property and built homes there. Wayne and Linda Gibbs became two of those expats in 2004, when they decided to retire-lock, stock, and barrel-to a small village in central Mexico, a decision that surprised their friends and family...and themselves. This couple's dream was based, in part, on living in an oceanfront environment, after concluding early on that it was unlikely they could afford such a property in the U.S. "Our dream included white sand beaches, sunshine, Coronas and margaritas, and was perhaps a bit unrealistic. However, we certainly have gotten the adventure that we were looking for. For just about every upside of living near the ocean, there is a downside." Flapping Shoes and Double-Dog Dares is the Gibbs' memoir, documenting the trials and tribulations of living in a foreign country-adjusting to village life, jungle and ocean environments, swarms of insects and scorpions, and learning Spanish. Within the first few years in Mexico, they ran into problems with their land survey and deed, experienced the Nayarit flood of 2010, drove through the remnants of a hurricane, and found themselves caught in a drug war shootout in a grocery store parking lot. Their adventure, they are learning, is just beginning!

The narrative of Lieutenant Linai T. Helm, one of the two officers who survived the Chicago Massacre, mysteriously disappeared nearly one hundred years ago. This manuscript has lately been found and is now in the possession of the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, by whose kind permission it is here presented to the public, together with letters explaining its loss and its recovery. It is the earliest extant account given by a participator in the fearful tragedy of August 15, 1812. It was written by Lieutenant Helm in 1814, at the request of Judge Augustus B. Woodward, of Detroit, and was accompanied by a letter asking Judge Woodward's opinion as to whether the strictures made in the narrative upon the conduct of Captain Heald would result in Helm's being court-martialed for disrespect to his commanding officer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting! By A Customer According to the introduction in this book, this story is from a manuscript that was written by Lieutenant Linai T. Helm, who was a survivor of the Fort Dearborn Massacre. Helm wrote the manuscript two years after the end of the War of 1812. He didn't publish it because he was advised that his description in the book of being disrespectful to his commanding officer might end in his court-marital. The manuscript was found many years later and was originally published in 1912. This book is a faithful re-print of that publishing. The book itself is absorbing and very interesting. The fate of the residents of Fort Dearborn was horrific and is described in great detail as is the story of the survivors. The story is told in the first person which draws the reader even further into the action. I highly recommend this book to all early American history buffs and anyone who is interested in the history of the War of 1812. I also highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story because you will find one in this book. Buy it, read it, enjoy it.

very few of the twenty fairy tales included in this volume have been presented before in an English dress; this will doubtless enhance their value in the eyes of the young folk, for whom, principally, they are intended. It is hoped that older readers will find some additional interest in tracing throughout the many evidences of kinship between these stories and those of more pronounced Eastern origin. The translation has been carefully revised by a well-known writer, who has interfered as little as possible with the original text, except in those instances where slight alterations were necessary. The illustrations speak for themselves, and are what might have been expected from the artist who designed those for the “Lullabies of Many Lands,” issued last Christmas.

In this engrossing and informative companion to her New York Times bestsellers Founding Mothers and Ladies of Liberty, Cokie Roberts marks the sesquicentennial of the Civil War by offering a riveting look at Washington, D.C. and the experiences, influence, and contributions of its women during this momentous period of American history.

With the outbreak of the Civil War, the small, social Southern town of Washington, D.C. found itself caught between warring sides in a four-year battle that would determine the future of the United States.

After the declaration of secession, many fascinating Southern women left the city, leaving their friends—such as Adele Cutts Douglas and Elizabeth Blair Lee—to grapple with questions of safety and sanitation as the capital was transformed into an immense Union army camp and later a hospital. With their husbands, brothers, and fathers marching off to war, either on the battlefield or in the halls of Congress, the women of Washington joined the cause as well. And more women went to the Capital City to enlist as nurses, supply organizers, relief workers, and journalists. Many risked their lives making munitions in a highly flammable arsenal, toiled at the Treasury Department printing greenbacks to finance the war, and plied their needlework skills at The Navy Yard—once the sole province of men—to sew canvas gunpowder bags for the troops.

Cokie Roberts chronicles these women's increasing independence, their political empowerment, their indispensable role in keeping the Union unified through the war, and in helping heal it once the fighting was done. She concludes that the war not only changed Washington, it also forever changed the place of women.

Sifting through newspaper articles, government records, and private letters and diaries—many never before published—Roberts brings the war-torn capital into focus through the lives of its formidable women.

Review “Cokie Roberts regularly dissects the power dynamics of modern-day Washington. As an author, though, she’s demonstrated a special regard for the farther reaches of American history and its behind-the-scenes players.” (New York Times Book Review)“Roberts is a gifted narrator of Civil War history, weaving the experiences and perspectives of the women into a fresh and illuminating account of key battles and events, from John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry to the assassination of the president.” (Washington Post)“An engaging narrative…. Roberts documents the struggles of many women to overcome their second-class status.… [she] does not ignore the experiences of ‘ordinary’ women.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)“Helping to reverse...cultural ignorance in American history...Roberts again combines her historical interest and long personal knowledge of Washington politics... [and] unearths the important and unique role of women during the US Civil War.” (Christian Science Monitor)“An enlightening account detailing how the Civil War changed the nation’s capital while expanding the role of women in politics, health care, education, and social services. ” (Kirkus Reviews)“Another splendid female-centric slice of history. . . . Roberts illuminates how the harsh realities of the war changed the course of individual lives and permanently altered the course of American women’s history.” (Booklist)“The author’s extensive research...gives this fresh look at Washington, DC during the Civil War era a sense of intimacy, immediacy, and originality.... [A] well-written, readable study. . . . Informative and accessible.” (Library Journal)

From the Back Cover

Cokie Roberts, author of three New York Times bestsellers, including Founding Mothers and Ladies of Liberty, turns her attention to the Civil War in a riveting exploration of the ways in which the conflict transformed not only the lives of women in Washington, D.C., but also the city itself. Her engrossing, well-researched narrative is an inspiring work about increasing independence and political empowerment, honoring the indispensable role of Washington, D.C.'s women in strengthening the city while keeping the lines of communication open with their Southern sisters, and in facilitating healing once the fighting was done. Compelling social history at its best, Capital Dames concludes that the war not only changed Washington; it also forever changed the role of women in American society.

Even though the focus of the book is Washington women, the author does a good job of reminding the reader of various important events at that time. I had forgotten, for instance, that Abraham Lincoln had actually been defeated at one time in a run for the US Senate.I found the historical references especially interesting. I am reminded of how young are nation really is - especially the western part of America. For example, in describing a sea voyage to San Francisco, the author describes that city as only having "three or four regularly built houses," and that there were only sixteen women in all of San Francisco society.Cokie describes some events which are similarly hard to imagine today. In the famous debates between Douglas and Lincoln, the author notes that "The combatants remained cordial," with Abe and Douglas's wife, Adele "even enjoying a train ride together on the way from one debate to the next." It's hard to imagine the contenders for U.S. president being chummy, with the wife of one taking a train ride with her husband's opponent. (However, I am reminded of two young congressmen--JFK and Richard Nixon, sharing a train car when they were young politicians.) Another historical curiosity mentioned is the infamous raid of John Brown on Harpers Ferry. Probably most readers do not realize that the army officer who captured Brown was none other than Robert E Lee--a colonel at the time. The author sets the stage for the reader by describing the panicky and hostile environment in Washington around the time Lincoln was elected president. Fearful of violence, the newly elected Lincoln surreptitiously came into town, presenting a "ludicrous image of a panicky president sneaking into town in Scotch cap and cloak."We are reminded that the Union assumed the war would be quickly won: "As troops advanced on Manassas, Virginia, they were accompanied by hundreds of civilians who thought the whole thing was a lark. Expecting an easy victory, they brought picnic baskets for a day in the country, while they watched the action through opera glasses as if it were a play." This "picnic" was spoiled by the Confederate spy Rose Greenhow. Pretending to hobnob with powerful politicians in Washington DC, she actually passed on critical order of battle information to the Confederacy. Rose was ultimately arrested by the famous detective Allan Pinkerton, but amazingly, that didn't stop Rose. Even under house arrest, she still was sending vital information to the Confederacy: "Rose kept finding ways to receive and review information even while confined to her home prison."All of the women in CAPITAL DAMES are fascinating, but one of the most inspiring figures is Dorothea Dix. She was a tireless proponent for the mentally ill, "Establishing hospitals where there were none and inspecting the hospital was born out of her efforts. She was so admired that she was given free passes for a transportation and had access to the powerful the world over, including the Pope." During the war, Dix was a leader in recruiting nurses to help the wounded. The author notes that Dorothy had strict job qualifications, including: "No Catholic nuns; no young, good looking women need apply." In order to avoid impropriety, first priority would be given to "matronly persons."Another inspiring figure in this book is Dr. Mary Walker. She was the first female surgeon in America and actually only the second woman to graduate from medical school. Cokie notes one oddity about Dr. Walker: "She always wore men's clothes, something that caused her to be arrested from time to time." Dr. Walter was eventually captured and held prisoner under terrible conditions. After the war she received the Medal of Honor--the only woman to receive that honor. This was all new to me--very interesting! This review would be incomplete without mention of the most inspirational figure of all--Clara Barton. Clara was tireless and fearless in helping thousands of wounded men. She found her way to the front lines--an unheard of place for a woman, where she sometimes worked without sleep for several days, helping treat the wounded. At one point, Clara stayed right until the rebel forces came upon her: "Luckily she and her co-workers managed to get the last man on the train and boarded themselves just as rebel soldiers rode in and set fire to the station." Of course, the author notes, Clara Barton would later being the American division of the Red Cross, as well as fight to have the United States recognize the Geneva Convention. Finally, in "Author's Notes and Acknowledgements," Roberts describes the terrific tragedy of the Civil War. Anyone reading of the death and suffering described here will surely be moved. As the author succinctly describes, "The southern politicians decision to secede was one of the most profound tragedies ever brought on by human beings." Of course, this decision led to the deaths of 600,000 Americans. The author describes her own personal feelings about her family history in the war, when a young boy asked which side their family was on. The author's daughter replied, "Well everyone in our family fought for the South, but it was good for the country that the North won." Nicely stated.√ CAPITAL DAMES does a great service in highlighting the lives of remarkable women who lived during the darkest period in America's past. These were courageous, bold, and just flat-out GOOD women. After reading about the terrible loss of life and massive suffering during this terrible time, I was glad to read about the many heroes (and a few scoundrels) that lived during that time.Highly Recommend!Advance copy for review courtesy of Edelweiss.

Lots of details By Jim Morris After hearing Cokie Robert's interview with Diane Rehm about her latest book."Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington, 1848-1868″ I couldn't wait to read it.Unfortunately the book is hard to follow. Roberts jumps from one Dame to another; the vignettes are engaging but often random. The absence of an index doesn't help.Roberts did an impressive amount of research; almost every page includes multiple quotes from primary sources. They give the book a certain credibility; but in the end all the quotes made for a choppy read.I strongly recommendCatherine Clinton's book: Mrs. Lincoln, A Life, and Elizabeth Keckley, Behind The Scenes, or Thirty Years a Slave and Four years in the White House

Interesting, educational, and truly remarkable By TicToc Posted first to Blog Critics as Book Review: 'Capital Dames,' A Glance at the Women of the Civil War by Cokie Roberts. The Civil War was a time in history where women were finding their own allegiances, a time of war and treason, heartache and treachery. The Years of 1848-1968 were defining years both for the emancipation of slavery but for the women who chose their own involvement in working for their beliefs and that of their husbands and families. In Capital Dames by Cokie Roberts we are taken into the parlors and the Whitehouse during a time when unrest was at its height. We are introduced to the women behind the great names in the histories of the colonies, and educated as to the real lives that were led by the men and their leading ladies.Whether they were the communicators, the spies or the informers, each had a strong belief in what they were doing. We meet the First Lady of the White House, as well as the belles of both the north and the south. There is an amazing array of information gleaned from writing, diaries and news of the time and Cokie has taken the opportunity to shine a light on the women behind the history of the Civil war. What I enjoyed about this particular telling is that Roberts tells the history as it unfolds, not just the woman, but also the men as they too play their part in history. While the emphasis is on the woman, it is the history and the making of it that seems to be the guide. I have always been interested in history and yet found myself in awe by some of the happenings. Many I did not know, and do not recall coming up in history lessons in school.Often the woman had to speak for the men, they were away at war, and information deemed important would often make its way through the woman, and their own visits with Generals and the White House as they tried to find a way to work the system to the best advantage of their own particular husband, family or belief. It is an amazing array of bravery and fortitude that holds you enthralled in the reading as you find yourself wondering just how you would handle some of the same issues. The war also brought to light the suffering and the need for hospitals, and we also meet the women who worked tirelessly to bring the Red Cross to light. If you enjoy history and want to know more behind the written facts, you will find the information garnered here through numerous records, many never before published, to be interesting and heartbreaking. You may also learn a bit more about this time in history, especially the part played by the woman as their men did their best to bring an end to war. This would be a great work for a reading or book club. The information is priceless, and the debatable material would keep a group talking long after hours.
