He is working as an "inspector of munitions" for the Secret Service. A scientist he is meeting at a London restaurant/club is abducted, and the formula for a powerful new explosive is stolen. At the same restaurant is Pamela Van Teyl, a wealth American girl who runs mysterious errands for her government. Also present are Mr. Fischer, a German American millionaire, and the Baron Sunyea, ambassador of Japan. These four will contend for the formula. The action moves swiftly from the underground of spies in London, to the heights of society in New York. The combatants seek not only secrets, but also love. The action in this novel takes place in the Spring of 1916. Germany and England are at war, and the alliances of the United States and Japan are key to ultimate victory. Germany is looking to strengthen the neutrality of the US, and keep American out of the war, at all costs. Japan is seen as a future power that can attack or support Germany's global ambitions. The novel explores the actions of German American businessmen who plot to keep American neutral, or destroy it's ability to help English and French. American polticians are bribed, factories are burned. The Battle of Jutland, which took place at the end of May, 1916, features prominently in the story. The novel was published in March of 1918, while the war was still being waged in Europe. Oppenheim worked for the British Government in public affairs, and was heavily engaged in the effort to convince the Americans to join the war.

Woman Sandy Graham may be a brilliant chemist who's discovered a new formula for a more deadly explosive, but he's an absolute idiot when it comes to keeping his mouth shut in a crowded London restaurant. So it should come as no surprise, really, when he goes to the lavatory to clean up and never comes back out. This sets into action several highly cultured spies from different governments out to find Sandy and his formula. From the U.S. (a neutral country at this time in the story) is socialite Pamela Van Teyl. Oh, I like her. She's got style. She's got class. She's got *something* made of brass. Also from America is Oscar Fischer, but he was originally born in Germany and that's who he's working for. He's also got a major "thang" for Pamela. The United Kingdom is represented by suave spy John Lutchester, who always seems to turn up at the right place at the right time. There's also Prince Nikasti from the Empire of Japan, but you can call him Kato.Who will find the formula? Will Germany and Japan become allies to attack the U.S.? Or will Germany and the U.S. become bedfellows and attack Japan? Will Pamela consider the exciting life she would have with Fischer and marry him, or will Lutchester steal her heart away?Read this rather short book to find the answers.

Takes you back to the early part of last century and is very well written. I paid a lot of money for the hard cover version of this and several other of his books. They are hard to find in print anymore. Several of them were lost during a move several years ago and I was thrilled to find them here on kindle. This kindle ebook was free as are all his other books. Take advantage of these free books. The Nerve of Foley, Held for Orders, Whispering Smith, Nan of Music Mountain, The Daughter of a Magnate, Laramie Holds the Range, and The Mountain Divide are all free here on kindle. Treat yourself and read them.

In this gripping memoir that is alternately charming and horrific, the author transports his reader into shtetl life of the pre-war period, recounts the unspeakable horrors of the Holocaust, shares the “resurrection” he experienced in Israel, and, ultimately, brings us full circle to his boyhood home, now and forever devoid of the enchanting Jewish community in which he was raised. This account is an important addition to the record of 20th Century Jewish existence and destruction in Eastern Europe.

The first part of the book beatifully describes Jewish life in Poland before the war, evoking a sense of nostalgia and so poetically written that the reader feels as if he/she actually was there. This is well worth the read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gripping tale of Poland before, during and after the Holocaust. By Joel Schlessinger This book is superbly written and a beautiful and searing account of growing up in what went from an idyllic Poland that quickly morphed into a brutally different place. Mordechai is an incomparable storyteller and the translation is faithful and well executed. I highly encourage reading it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's a Sequel! By Lou I read this book and was totally confused. I couldn't figure out who the characters were and the incident 14 years ago that everyone was referring to! After reading it, I found a list of Ann Stephens' books and noticed there was a book called "Lord Hope's Choice." And Lord Hope was a main character in "The Old Countess." Lo and behold, "The Old Countess" is the SEQUEL to "Lord Hope's Choice." No wonder I couldn't understand it. So I found it on Archive.org (it wasn't on Amazon) and downloaded it and am currently reading it. Now The Old Countess makes perfect sense and I am loving the first book! I will probably read The Old Countess again after I finish Lord Hope's Choice. Whatever you do, don't read The Old Countess until AFTER you read Lord Hope's Choice! Then I think you will enjoy them both. I only wish it had said somewhere that this book was a sequel! I enjoy Ann Stephens, but she does not compare to Emma Southworth, my very favorite.

In 383 AD a truly great love story blossoms between Magnus Maximus, the Roman leader in Britain - afterwards for five years Roman Emperor - and Elen, daughter of a powerful British king in the place we now call Wales. Magnus is fascinated by Elen, a gifted Seer and healer and a ‘pathfinder’ whose talented ancestors made straight roads in Britain long before the Romans. As the Roman Empire begins to crumble the love between Elen and Magnus links the sophisticated Celtic culture, with its esoteric rites and rituals with the pragmatic military culture of Rome now imposing Christianity on the known world. Reviews of Wendy Robertson’s novels ‘A terrific read. A world on the cusp of change and we experience it intimately.’ Historical Novels Review. ‘A powerful writer.’ Mail on Sunday. ‘Wonderful…Robertson deftly intertwines two time periods, slowly absorbing one into the other through the remarkably likeable protagonist.’ Booklist USA. ‘A great storyteller… she weaves another tale with ideas that still resonate when the story’s over.’ Northern Echo. ‘Wendy Robertson is a rare breed – a writer with an exquisite gift for creating vivid, relatable characters.’ Scottish Daily Record. Note: ‘ In The Pathfinder I have taken the available material and archeological history of late fourth century Britain and addressed the powerful pre-Arthurian myths of Macsen Wledig and the British princess Elen. My intention is to weave a story that has hope, truth and justice at its heart.’ Wendy Robertson

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Pathfinder by Wendy Robertson. An evocative novel of a rarely researched time in history. An excellent read. By Judith Mary Gates What a treat! I have long been an aficionado of historical fiction, delighting in the sensation of living in another time and place. The Pathfinder transported me to a world of otherness, a world permeated by myths and mysteries, a world with vastly differing constructs of reality. Within this well researched novel I glimpsed not only the land of my forefathers but the people who populated it, people who came to life as they lived and loved in a country I know well but within a historical context I barely understood. Wendy Robertson is to be congratulated on her diligent research of a less well known era of British history, alongside her capacity to take the reader from a daily world dominated by scientific concepts of the 21st century to the magical ethos permeating pre and post Roman Britain. I walked in Elen's shoes. I observed through her eyes, I empathized with her feelings - all thanks to the skill of the writer.

Clad in his customary black and silver, with raven hair unpowdered and elaborately dressed, diamonds on his fingers and in his cravat, Hugh Tracy Clare Belmanoir, Duke of Andover, sat at the escritoire in the library of his town house, writing. He wore no rouge on his face, the almost unnatural pallor of which seemed designedly enhanced by a patch set beneath his right eye. Brows and lashes were black, the former slanting slightly up at the corners, but his narrow, heavy-lidded eyes were green and strangely piercing. The thin lips curled a little, sneering, as one dead-white hand travelled to and fro across the paper.

This book, which she wrote to amuse a sick relative, I find rather amazing for a first effort. I've enjoyed all of her books and she ranks among my favorite authors. I fell so easily for the characters as they were very easy to visualise. I do like reading historical romances and I recommend this one.

In Rumsons formative years, people journeyed to the Jersey Shore to escape the heat and pestilence in the cities. In what is now Rumson, river-to-river land parcels were developed into farms and country estates for the elite of New York City. Along with the Baking Powder King and the Calico King, another of Rumsons notable residents was a US Secretary of the Interior who was asked to run for vice president, refused the honor, and left the position open for the second choice, Teddy Roosevelt. Today, one of the worlds most famous and enduring singing stars and one of Americas most famous chefs have ties to the town. Rumson has been the home of entertainers, sports stars, financiers, entrepreneurs, scientists, brewers, legislators, philanthropists, and jurists. It is a community that brings together people of varied interests, ages, and walks of life yet still remains a warm and comfortable small town.

I have never been to Rumson, but while reading this beautifully arranged book, I found myself entrenched in the interesting lives of the residents who have resided there from its early years to the present. It was amazing to learn how many well known people from government, business, celebrity status and sports could be found in one very special town. The pictures alone made it worth purchasing, almost like visiting a museum! What an amazing job the author did putting this book together! Anyone who ever lived in Rumson should have a copy. For everyone else, its a uniquely enjoyable documentary of a very special town!

This little book is meant for those who have never read any Welsh history before. It is not taken for granted that the reader knows either Latin or Welsh. A fuller outline may be read in The Story of Wales, in the "Story of the Nations" series; and a still fuller one in The Welsh People of Rhys and Brynmor Jones. Of fairly small and cheap books in various periods I may mention Rhys' Celtic Britain, Owen Rhoscomyl's Flame Bearers of Welsh History, Henry Owen's Gerald the Welshman, Bradley's Owen Glendower, Newell's Welsh Church, and Rees Protestant Non- conformity in Wales. More elaborate and expensive books are Seebohm's Village Community and Tribal System in Wales, Clark's Medieval Military Architecture, Morris' Welsh Wars of Edward I., Southall's Wales and Her Language. In writing local history, A. N. Palmer's History of Wrexham and companion volumes are models.

It's from the 1920's, so first of all you'll have to excuse the casual racism (by which I mean the author is convinced that each race possess certain natural attributes, he doesn't go making racial slurs or anything like that or I'd give it a considerably lower rating...). Even more strangely, some Welsh names are anglicised (Owain Glyndwr becomes Owen Glendower, worse, Rhys becomes Rees which is just wrong on every conceivable level). As a short history, it's not a bad introduction, but sometimes it's a little TOO short - the chapter on Glyndwr, a Welsh hero of Arthurian status, is only 2-3 pages long - possibly because of the author's political bias (see below). The style of writing feels at many times as though it was written for a young audience : i.e., "Now I will tell you all about such-and-such.... I have told you lots about this, so now I will tell you of that...",. The author also seems at once both patriotic to Wales but a loyal subject of the Empire and is at pains not to offend anyone, apparently a historian who's willing to let bygones be bygones. Maybe we could all learn something from this, but it does tend to make him walk on eggshells. For instance, in the chapter on Llewyellen the Last, he actually says that we shouldn't be bitter about the Conquest because both sides were at fault. I can't see any modern Welsh historian being nearly so gracious. It certainly isn't at all like any modern history I've read - nowadays authors tend to have axes to grind and provide more interpretative accounts. In this case, if the author is applying any interpretation at all it is only to say that we could all just get along with each other if only we all shared a nice cup of tea. In short, it's quite odd, but curiously engaging. Their are certainly worse histories being written. As to this being in Kindle format, I see no reason whatsoever to choose one of the far more expensive version (some are $44 at the time of writing !) over this free edition. There is no table of contents or any fancy features but the book is too short to need them. Feels slightly unfair to give a free book by a long-dead author only 3/5, but I can't forgive the English spellings of Rhys...

A compact history focusing on the pre-industrial period By mzjones11 Five stars would have required more depth on the role of Wales within the UK during the 20th century. I would have liked to understand how the "troubles" in Ireland effected Wales, or the size in Scottish nationalism in the past 30 years.

The Rectory children are new and the youngest (who also has a hard time staying out of trouble and understanding others) soon befriends a local girl named Celestina. Both of their lives change over the course of the book and it is interesting to see how young Bridget deals with her often reckless actions. This was not as good as The Cuckoo Clock in my opinion, but is still a nice read. If you are a fan of Elizabeth Goudge, you would probably enjoy it.

Her journey takes her throughout the West as an adventurous woman seeking a life sans the chains of a boring job. Throughout the book, she captures your soul for the unknown in her storytelling of unexpected events on the road.

For me, I love it because of the way she expresses the way it feels to see the simple things in life... the way she describes the wind moving through the trees, and the shocking beauty of the moon. It feels familiar; I sink into a comfort while reading it. It simultaneously makes me want to go out camping and sit and read more.

"The American West by President Eisenhower's Favorite Writer"

First published in 1908, the Classic Western Library Edition includes: - Foreword - Zane Grey Publishing Timeline - Illustrations

THE LAST OF THE PLAINSMEN

Have you heard about the legend of Buffalo Jones? Buffalo the adventurer? The conservationist? The American legend? “The Last of the Plainsmen” is bestselling author Zane Grey’s adaptation of the life of Jones. This is the book that helped Grey towards the greatness he achieved in his later books like “Heritage of the Desert,” “Riders of the Purple Stage” and set the tone of his entire career. This is the book that made Grey a legend and Buffalo Jones an integral part of the American West. In this deluxe edition of the book that includes a foreword, timeline and illustrations, you will take part in a journey through the American West. You will ride with Jones as he travels across the Arizona desert toward that wonderful country of great pines and deep canyons. This is an action-packed novel that will give you a true look at the American West.

EDITORIAL REVIEW

For many years, Zane Grey set the benchmark when it came to writing contemporary Western fiction. His are the stories that brought the Wild West into the everyday home and created the myths and legends of the West that we today hold sacred. Zane Grey wrote “The Last Plainsmen” after meeting Buffalo Jones in New York City and sparking a friendship that would last to the grave. Although this book only tells of a small portion of Jones’ life, it is still considered to be one of the most important books from the time and has been constantly in print since its release. For those who are new to Grey but love Westerns, this book should be on your list of conquests. The portrayals and descriptions alone are worthy of your time. The story, however, may have you coming back again and again. Zane Grey makes for addictive reading, and this is one of his best.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Buffalo Jones Was the Last of the Plainsmen By Charles Wheeler When Zane Grey met Buffalo Jones in New York City in 1908 Zane Grey instinctively knew he had met someone special. And the two men remained friends until Jones' death many years later. This book recounts only a small portion of the plainsman's life, but what is provided relates to us the life of an adventurer, an empire builder, and a conservationist. Included are stories of the man's trying to rope lions in the Grand Canyon and to his attempt to preserve the last of the buffalo from extinction, after once having slaughtered them to provide meat for the railroad workers. When this book was first published it did not receive very good reviews, but has since been praised for Zane Grey's prose and narrative skills. Furthermore, the people Zane Grey met on this trip with Jones led directly to his creation of such great novels as Heritage of the Desert and Riders of the Purple Sage and set the stage for his entire career. Without this trip and the writing of this book there might not have been a Zane Grey as we know him today. It all began here.

Not your typical Toronto guide book. A look back at my holiday to the city in the late 1980s – the attractions I saw, the things I did. A semi-autobiographical retrospective travelogue and look back at 1980s Toronto I visited Toronto as a young man in the late 1980s. Quite an adventure for a (then) twenty year old from England on his first big adventure abroad. It made quite a lasting impression on me which I thought I had no record of it other than memories until I found a bunch of photographs I took whilst in Toronto. That gave me the idea to write this “retrospective travelogue” of my time in Canada by including the photographs which have helped to bring back more memories of Toronto in 1987. Inside you have the story of my Toronto adventure told around the photographs giving that retrospective look back at visiting such places as the CN Tower, Casa Loma, Fort York, Niagara Falls and other places together with a bit of a look at how things may have changed since.

Inside you have my photographs and recollections of various Toronto landmarks such as:

  • CN Tower
  • Casa Loma
  • Fort York
  • Toronto Islands
  • Hockey Hall of Fame
  • And other landmarks and attractions too as I explored the city and wider such as Wasaga Beach and Niagara Falls
I hope you enjoy this semi-autobiographical retrospective about Toronto in 1987 based on my photographs and recollections of my time there. This book is approximately 11,500 words long.
