Hugh Clegg (1898–1979) was among the most notable Mississippi historical figures during the 1920s through the 1960s. Born in Mathiston, Mississippi, he was a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1926 to 1954, during which time he rose to the top leadership and worked directly under Director J. Edgar Hoover and Associate Director Clyde Tolson. In his second career, as executive assistant to Chancellor J. D. Williams at the University of Mississippi from 1954 to 1969, he was in a top leadership position before and during the civil rights crises in the State of Mississippi and at Ole Miss.

While with the Bureau, Clegg’s responsibilities included leading the search for many of the most dangerous gangsters in the country, including John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, the Barker gang, and Alvin Karpis. He established the FBI’s National Training Academy and coordinated the hunt for atom bomb spy Harry Gold, collaborator with German spy Emil Klaus Fuchs. He was sent to England by Director Hoover prior to the outbreak of World War II to study British intelligence agencies.

A close friend of many of the leading federal and state elected officials and of members of the US Supreme Court, Clegg was well known to many in power. At the University of Mississippi he was the prime contact between the university and the federal government during the desegregation crises of Clennon King and James Meredith. He was also assigned the lead role in combating the efforts of Mississippi politicians to discredit and remove faculty members when scholars were thought “too liberal” and therefore a threat to the state.

Through a Freedom of Information request from the FBI, author Ronald F. Borne obtained thousands of pertinent documents. In addition, he mined Clegg’s oral history and an unpublished book manuscript. Borne interviewed close relations, colleagues, and friends to reveal a portrait of a distinguished, loyal man who significantly shaped the training procedures for the FBI and then mediated the University of Mississippi’s conflicts with both state officials and the federal government.

Troutmouth: The Two Careers of Hugh Clegg, by Ronald F. Borne

Review

“I have read many books about ‘Ole Miss’ and ‘James Meredith.’ This one is the best! Now I know what ‘James Meredith’ did at ‘Ole Miss’ in 1962, and why Mississippi will lead the nation in reaching the goal of the Founding Fathers of ‘equality’ for every citizen.”

―James Meredith, BA, University of Mississippi, 1963

“I was eighteen years old working outside of Hugh Clegg’s office in the Lyceum. He was a giant of a man, and I did all I could to avoid even seeing him, until one day I saw the humanity of this great man when he apologized to a young reporter who he had briefly not treated properly. I worked for Mr. Clegg until his retirement and was there with him during the riots, but I never knew or realized until many years later who he really was and what role he played in the admission of James Meredith to Ole Miss. He was from the mold of J. Edgar Hoover, but with the utmost in integrity so critical to Ole Miss during this critical period in our state’s history.”

―Ed Meek, former assistant vice chancellor for public relations and marketing and associate professor of journalism, University of Mississippi

“Ron Borne has done us all a terrific service by resurrecting and so thoroughly researching the life of Webster County Mississippi’s Hugh Clegg. From Bennett Academy in Mathiston to Washington, DC’s halls of power, Clegg’s meteoric rise in a fledgling FBI to J. Edgar Hoover confidant reflects the remarkable journey of a man whose competence was matched only by his capacity for loyalty. Hugh Clegg’s faithful return to Oxford and Ole Miss in a time of crisis bears witness to the axiom that for Mississippians ‘you can go away but you can never get away.’”

―William Dunlap, artist

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WOW!!! By Jerry Now this will be a fun sentence to write. I am too young to fully appreciate this book. Of course it is not really true but it was still a fun sentence to write. This is a history book, and while the title would indicate it is about a young man who joins the FBI, it really covers the early history of the FBI. It then goes on to cover the turbulent times surrounding the civil rights movement of the late 1950's and early 1960's.Let me make this clear, I am a retired Agent of the FBI, so I am not totally unbiased when it comes to the history of the FBI. So anyone else should read the book for themselves and form their own judgement. But it is obvious the author did a huge amount of meticulous research and there is plenty in the book for a reader to look over and come to their own conclusions. Now the civil rights struggles of the early 1960's is something I remember well watching on the news as I was growing up. I am one of that Baby Boomer generation who was born nine months after my father came home from WW II. That is why my statement that I am too young to fully appreciate this book is not altogether accurate. I remember that part of our countries history well.Hugh Clegg, in his role as an assistant to the chancellor of the University of Mississippi, was a central part of those struggles, just remember the turmoil of admitting James Meredith to the University. This is a fascinating first hand account of that struggle.if either of those subjects would hold your interest this book would be an excellent choice to take a close look at several of the most important parts of twentieth century US history.I certainly enjoyed it.Jerry WebbSpecial Agent-FBI, retired

The writer did extensive research and presented the results well in the book. I believe this book would appeal to most readers and I recommend it. I suspect that most will read it cover to cover before they put it down.

By Phillip Levi A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, with Karen in the wilderness (on a bike), ah wilderness be paradise enough.( Apologies to Kahil Gilbran). "Cycling for Boomers" by Henry Work with pictures by his wife Karen is a romp on bikes through New Zeland, Australia, California and river ways in several European countries. It is more than just a tale about the authors adventures. This is an informative book for experienced bike tourers and should be a common sense guide book for the novice. I found it quite complete with details from initial purchase to the smart cyclist's clothing, to shuttle service for extra clothing, bulky gear, etc. The side trips like the Royal Albatrose center, wines to try, Emerson's brew and more per ride make for an enjoyable read and hopefully encourage others to give it a try.

Suggestions about how to bypass cities and how to find good restaurants with the local wines definitely good to know. Discussions about the different bikes for different uses was also very helpful.

It is well researched and I liked how this was blended with the first-hand experiences. As with everything I've read by this author, there are deep insights and some very clever prose, which I also appreciated. I especially enjoyed the pieces on the "flower trains," his adventure at the "ladies clinic" and his time with Lucy Liu! A light and entertaining read. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Traveling with the Tehuelche Indians By James Paris This is quite the best of the books written in the late 19th century by British travelers who were enchanted with Patagonia. Two others, RIDING ACROSS PATAGONIA by Lady Florence Dixie and WANDERINGS IN PATAGONIA by Julius Beerbohm, have recently been reprinted and both bear reading. Musters was the first to publish (in 1871), and was referred to very amusingly by Lady Florence in her book when she described the reaction of her friends to her expedition:"Patagonia! Who would ever think about going to such a place? Why you will be eaten up by cannibals! What on earth makes you choose such an outlandish part of the world to go to? What can be the attraction? Why it is thousands of miles away, and no one has ever been there before, except Captain Musters, and one or two other adventurous madmen!"Thank heaven for adventurous madmen like Captain Musters! Although he was by training a military man, he was able to blend in with the Tehuelche Indians of Patagonia and travel with them for months between Santa Cruz at the mouth of the Rio Chico and the relatively young settlement at Patagones, now known as the twin cities of Carmen de Patagones and Viedma. To be flexible enough to be accepted by a native tribe and act, in effect, as a sub-chief in their dealings with the Araucanian and Pampas tribes and still retaining their respect at the end is a tribute to a remarkable personality. Like Charles Darwin in his VOYAGE OF THE HMS BEAGLE, Musters was a meticulous and mostly reliable observer. His book contains two appendices, one a glossary of terms and expressions in the Tehuelche tongue, and the other an amusing comparison of the myths discussing whether the Patagonian Indians were giants (they were taller than most Indians, but not giants).Musters traveled some distance with his Tehuelche hosts, much of it along the eastern edge of the Andes, the land now traversed by the famous Ruta 40. During his travels, the characters of the individual men, women, and children in the tribes were skillfully delineated, as well as their customs and frequent quarrels.By 1871, the Tehuelche were well on their way to extinction. Musters estimated that there were only 1,500 members of the several nomadic bands. Disease, drink, and feuds all played a part in decimating their population. During one alarming stretch between Geylum and the Coast, the tribe had to pass through an area with such bad water and poor hunting that the children began to die off at an alarming rate. This is an outstanding work that is readable and scholarly at the same time. I give it my highest recommendation.

Garnier contains an avant-propos, introduction, collection of reviews, extensive bibliography, chronology, the complete text plus the anonymous additions, and a helpful glossary. Best Ebook Thomas Rainborowe - Dangerous Radical, by Stanley Slaughter

Thomas Rainborowe is the forgotten hero of the 17th century English Civil Wars. As a soldier, he won fame in Parliament’s New Model Army as a brilliant siegemaster and man of reckless courage. Only Oliver Cromwell, a cavalry leader of genius, stood above him in terms of military prowess. But it was as a radical politician that he challenged and unnerved the establishment. In 1647, at the Putney Debates, Rainborowe called for one man one vote. He was probably the first Englishman to do so. It would have turned England upside down. Such a measure was not implemented in the United Kingdom until 271 years later in 1918. But Rainborowe’s grand vision also supported the revolutionary idea that the people should not only be sovereign but also protected by inalienable rights. For him, there was only a reduced role for a king. His views put him on a collision course with most of the country but specifically with his erstwhile friend, the innately conservative and cautious Cromwell. While Rainborowe sought to transform England, Cromwell wanted to re-instate the defeated and discredited Charles I. This and other clashes between to the two men would lead to the death of one of them, Rainborowe warned. Within a year of the Debates, it was Rainborowe who was dead, killed by royalists in Doncaster with the help of disenchanted Parliamentarians. Some historians have accused Cromwell of complicity. Certainly it was Cromwell who gained most from the death of his rival. Rainborowe’s demise happened just as the Army was backing his demand that the king be put on trial. With Cromwell undecided on the issue, the political leadership of the Army was within Rainborowe’s grasp. His death left Cromwell with a clear run. Thomas Rainborowe Dangerous Radical is the story of an outstanding but largely neglected man who boldly challenged the entrenched hierarchical structure of 17th century England. In his vision of a brave new world, the Parliamentary soldiers, mainly volunteers, had risked their lives to defeat a tyrannical king. In return they deserved a say in how the country was subsequently run. It was not to be. With his death, the leaderless Army radicals were defeated within months of the king’s execution and England reverted to its old ways.

Other searches on Rainborowe give scant sketches and do not explain the complexity of the man, his views, and goals. This book shows the impact of the people of this time in both England & the Massachusetts colony on the future American Republic and Constitution.I found myself often going to other sources for fuller information on events mentioned but this definitely gives a fresh perspective on a 16th century radical thinker who's views today would no longer be regarded so.

Indians! Pirates! Rebels! Blockade runners! Smugglers! Murder! Beaches! Beauty contests! Hurricanes!

These are all parts of the colorful history of an island city that once called itself The Free State of Galveston. Located at a natural harbor on the northeastern part of a 30-mile-long sand barrier island, the city dates its beginning to the end of the Texas Revolution. Before then the harbor had attracted Jean Lafitte, a pirate from Louisiana, and the revolutionary Texan government fleeing in front of the attack of Santa Anna's Mexican army.

After independence in 1836, Michel B. Menard, along with nine associates, bought the harbor property and founded the town. Galveston grew on the strength of the harbor - the best between New Orleans and Veracruz - and the city became a major entry point for immigrants to Texas. During the Civil War, it was a haven for Confederate blockade runners and the site of one of the major battles of the war in Texas. Afterward it was a center for occupation forces and the point from which Major-General Gordon Granger announced the emancipation of Texas' slaves on June 19, 1865 (Juneteenth Day). The city later became a major cotton port for the Southwest and the location of the University of Texas Medical School.

Still, if you can find a used copy, it does provide solid facts about events and people from Galveston's colorful past. Cabeza de Vaca, Karankawa Indians, Michael B. Menard, Jean Laffite, The Bolivar Ferry, the Galveston harbor, William L. Moody, Battle of Galveston (civil war), 1900 Hurricane, the seawall, the raising if Galveston Island, the Maceo crime family, Prohibition and various tourist attractions are briefly touched on. There are several black and white photographs, including maps and an interesting "then and now" section about historical landmarks.

Fair overview of the history of Galveston By Amazon Customer David McComb's book "Galveston" is a short 51-pg read about the history of Galveston island, ideal for someone looking for some quick history to read while waiting for an oil change (or a kid doing a school book report on a Texas locale). As a Texas history novice I found this work succinct in the details of the the history of this island, and the book included plenty of black and white images to go with the account. It describes the early history of this island, including the visits of the Karankawa indians to the empty and rattlesnake-infested land, the explorations of Spaniard Cabeza de Vaca, the exploits of pirate Jean Laffite, leading all the way up to the eventual land distribution and sale in the 19th century. We learn about the impact of the civil war on Galveston, as well as the destructive hurricane of 1900 in an era before modern weather forecasting that left vast destruction and thousands dead.McComb describes the transitions in the 20th century that saw Galveston transforming into more of a tourist location (although interestingly no mention of the more iconic tourist traps like Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn, etc). This was a good quick read about some of the background and history of Galveston Island.

The feud yarns make all the Hatfields and McCoys either stupid, bloodthirsty or cowardly. Sometimes it is all three. The majority of the McCoys in the yarns are cowards, who huddled for years, trembling at the thought of the terrible Hatfields. This never sat right with me, from my first reading of a feud book at age twelve until today. I could not accept it, simply because I knew too many McCoys, with not a coward among the lot. My mother was a McCoy, the daughter of Phillip McCoy. Mom had nine siblings, three brothers and six sisters, with nary a coward among them. My Grandpa Phillip McCoy feared no man, and his three sons, Asa, Lucas and Bobby were cut from the same cloth. My mother and her sisters would, as the old folks said, “fight a circle saw.” My aunt Grace is still living in her nineties, and if the ghost of Devil Anse invaded her home tonight, she would fight him tooth and nail to protect her family. The strangest thing about the cowardly McCoy story is that it is supported by a very active and noisy minority of present-day McCoys. This little group, which I call “The Ran’l McCoy cult,” will laud any writer who makes the Hatfields total villains and the McCoys helpless victims—AND makes Ran’l McCoy the head of the McCoy clan. This book will answer the question which plagued me as a youngster, and which I know still plagues readers of feud books, which is: “Why did Randolph McCoy receive no support, either from his relatives outside his immediate family, or from the community at large, in his troubles with Devil Anse Hatfield?” The cult will hate this book. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A valuable and welcome addition to the history of the Hatfield McCoy Feud By rkh In his new book, “The Missing McCoys”, Thomas Dotson aims to restore the larger McCoy family to their rightful place in Tug Valley, and thus American, history. Until now, the McCoy family has been disappeared from the official history of the feud, their stories ignored, their status within the community forgotten. Only Randolph McCoy and his immediate family remained, and even Randolph McCoy’s personal history was subject to the same process of disappearance. The feud tales had a life of their own, a kind of gravity that distorted historical truth, highlighting small details and relegating other, perhaps more important details, to the background. The sons of Daniel McCoy, Randolph and Asa Harmon McCoy and their sons and daughters, receive the bulk of historical attention. Daniel’s older brother, Samuel McCoy, father of Randolph’s wife and first cousin, Sally McCoy, is almost never mentioned in official feud tales. Neither are his wealthy sons, Uriah and Asa McCoy, Sally’s brothers and Randolph’s cousins and brothers-in-law. The feud tales ignore them and their role within the Tug Valley community, from its initial settlement in the first decade of the 19th century to the days of the active feud near the century’s end. In this book, fleshed out with more than 70 photos, court records and other historical documents, Thomas Dotson unearths these previously missing McCoys and brings them back into the light of history. In so doing, he overturns many of the generally accepted feud stories, exposing them as the fanciful tall tales that they most certainly are. Thomas offers new insights into men and women such as Selkirk McCoy, Bill Staton, Aunt Betty McCoy, and a host of others. Along the way, he sheds much needed new light on the character of Randolph McCoy himself. His book is an indispensable addition to the canon of Hatfield McCoy Feud history.

The use of actual documents from the time (about 50 of them) plus a lot of photographs helped make his writing about the McCoys and their role in the feud very credible. Most of the information presented here was new to me. The style was very engaging. A real pleasure that offers a unique and important look into previously unwritten history of a fascinating family!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Thomas Dotson has done it again! Using public records ... By Mark T. Webb Thomas Dotson has done it again! Using public records, he refutes the money making machine's history and tells us the real story of the few incidents that have so long been regarded as two family's "feud". Thomas writes with honesty and wit. Both of which I appreciate. I hope he continues to provide us with more facts, not legends.

He was a truly great author of Jewish extraction at the wrong time. He and his wife committed suicide together to avoid falling under the Nazi regime just before the WWII ended. His writing is witty, oblique in a Viennese way, funny and wise.
