I first encountered Matt’s writing on his blog and website. One can tell right off that Matt’s writing and karate training are at a completely different level than most of what you find on the web. He is well trained in both literary and martial arts. His presentation of himself and his research is refreshingly modest, without grandiosity and trustworthy. His work always provides value. In this book Matt does the same digging deeply into history and personalities.I can wholeheartedly recommend this book. For both the beginner and the expert there is a feast of information. The book has the ability to meet you where you are on your martial path. It will inspire new students and those that have grown to the point where they are now teaching. The interviews are candid and even intimate. Martial veterans masterly handle the questions Matt puts forward. Almost all the men and women interviewed honor their teachers and traditions without dogmatism or zealotry common in less seasoned martial artists of all styles.I believe the greatest service Matt provided for me is the reminder that while about readiness, the traditional arts are perhaps even more so about relationship, and responsibility. Thank you Sensei. Well done.

A pragmatic analysis by Colonel William Souza based on his experiences with his Marine advisor team tasked with forming, training and operating with the Iraqi Intervention Force at its inception in 2004. Conceived of after conventional Iraqi Battalion members were unwilling and truly incapable of fighting against the insurgents in the streets of Fallujah in the Spring of 2004. The intent behind the creation for the Iraqi Intervention Forces was to function as a counter-insurgency unit. This book provides distinctive insight and perspective to the experiences of the Marine advisors deployed to Al Taji Iraq to train and operate with the first fully operational Brigade in the Iraqi Intervention Force.

At the Back of the North Wind - By George Mac Donald. At the Back of the North Wind is a children's book by George MacDonald. It was serialized in the children's magazine Good Words for the Young beginning in 1868 and was published in book form in 1871. It is a fantasy centered on a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind. Diamond travels together with the mysterious Lady North Wind through the nights. The book includes the fairy tale Little Daylight, which has been pulled out as an independent work, or separately, added to other collections of his fairy tales. The book tells the story of a young boy named Diamond. He is a very sweet little boy who makes joy everywhere he goes. He fights despair and gloom and brings peace to his family. One night, as he is trying to sleep, Diamond repeatedly plugs up a hole in the loft (also his bedroom) wall to stop the wind from blowing in. However, he soon finds out that this is stopping the North Wind from seeing through her window. Diamond befriends her, and North Wind lets him ride on her back, taking him on several adventures. Though the North Wind does good deeds and helps people, she also does seemingly terrible things. On one of her assignments, she must sink a ship. Yet everything she does that seems bad leads to something good. The North Wind seems to be a representation of Pain and Death working according to God's will for something good.

At the Back of the North Wind: Good Words for the Young, by George MacDonald

About the Author George MacDonald (10 December 1824 – 18 September 1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. C. S. Lewis wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his "master": "Picking up a copy of Phantastes one day at a train-station bookstall, I began to read. A few hours later," said Lewis, "I knew that I had crossed a great frontier." G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence". 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. No cookie this, but a seventeenth-century swashbuckler! By Peter Limburg Set in England's then Wild West, a region dominated by illiterate squires and vicious bandits, this story contains adventure enough for boys of any age, my octogenarian self included. Classic ingredients, including kidnappings, false identities, class conflicts, and an almost-doomed love blend in this tale of life in the turbulent period of the end of Charles II's reign and the succession to the throne of the unpopular and untrustworthy James II. There are raids and battles and intrigue galore before love and decency win out in the end. Some readers may be put off by the Devonshire and Somerset dialects in which a large part of the dialogue is conducted, but I, as a language buff, found them bizarrely fascinating. Curiosity drove me to Google this late19th-century novel, and I learned that it is based on historical characters and events, freely fictionalized. I enjoyed it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gripping reading By John G. Meadowcroft Set in Devonshire/Somerset in the 1680s during the reign of Charles II, this bokk is rivetting reading, oonce you get into it.It is a tale of the unlikely romance between yeoman farmer, the physically powerful John Ridd, and Lorna Doone of the aristocratic Doone family, forcibly expelled from it estates in Scotland, and living by preying on the local inhabitants in the west of England. It is historically informative, and the descriptions of the social and phusical setting brilliantly provoke a feel for the atmosphere of the often blopdthirsty times.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The absolute best! By Amazon Customer This is one of my all-time favorite books. Because it's written in "Ye Olde English", the language can be difficult, but context helps 99% of the time. It has heartbreak, romance, danger, revenge and humor, all within an historical setting that's simply fascinating. Sooooo highly recommended.

Entertaining story about steeplechase racing in late 1800's / early 1900's England By Sean McCoy This is a novel about steeplechase racing and horse training in turn of the century England. It is by the same author who wrote the classic "Bob Son of Battle". This book didn't seem quite as fleshed out as Bob, but provides some interesting insight into the horse racing world at that time, with local characters and dialect. The author was obviously keen on and knew a thing or two about dogs and horses, so his knowledge from the end of the animal age and the beginning of the machine age adds interest to the fairly simple story. Good enough for when you're in the mood for an old fashioned feel good animal story. Also, the e-version of this book is excellent, no weird typos and such.

The Mississippi Bubble, by Emerson Hough

About the Author Emerson Hough (1857-1923) taught school before studying law at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1880. Hough was admitted to the bar in 1882 and practiced law at White Oaks, New Mexico, but found it had no appeal for him. He turned to a literary career by taking camping trips and writing about them for publication. His body of work eventually included 27 novels and hundreds of short stories and articles.

Hough's early works included "The Singing Mouse Stories," for children, in 1895 and the nonfiction "The Story of the Cowboy" in 1897. He had his first major success in 1902 with the novel "The Mississippi Bubble," which became a best-seller. "The Way of the West" followed the next year.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For Faith, Love, and Hope By Scrapple8 The historical novel 'The Mississippi Bubble' by Emerson Hough was well-received by the American reading public upon its release, ranking 4th in sales among all American novels that debuted in 1902. The book is a fictional account of the life of Scottish financier John Law, who reached his professional apex as the Controller General of Finances in France during the early 18th century. Law was appointed by Duc d'Orléans, the regent for King Louis XV, to implement his financial plan for the French economy, starting with the notes circulated by the public.Hough drew on a book by Charles Mackay called 'Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds' for his background knowledge of John Law and the Mississippi Bubble. The colorful portrait of John Law by Mackey forms the character used by Emerson Hough in 'The Mississippi Bubble.' Both books - the Mackey book and Hough's novel - are available for free as e-books from Project Gutenberg.Readers who want to make up their own minds about John Law will be disappointed by reading this novel alone. Still, the novel has some merit. The story establishes a point of view sympathetic to Law, through fabricated events and a generous consideration of Law's policies. Hough suggests that the Duke of Orleans and his advisors, D'Argenson and Dubois, were the parties responsible for the Mississippi Bubble by their mismanagement of Law's plan. The biography of John Law on Wikipedia has no mention of Law visiting America. The events of Book 2 in the novel appear entirely invented - however, Hough offers some excellent writing in this part of the novel, describing the American frontier from the viewpoint of one with a wealth of background knowledge of life on the frontier. Some may take exception to Hough's characterizations of 'hook-nosed Jews,' but such were the times. People make similar charges of Booth Tarkington, for his novels don't survive today's tests of political correctness. If those sorts of things bother you, then don't read the book. The subprime mortgage meltdown of 2008 brought the topic of investment bubbles back into public consciousness. The original version of this book was published in the wake of the 1901 stock market bubble, created when Edward Harriman and associates of J. Pierpont Morgan bid up the price of Northern Pacific stock. For a time, the Mackay book was discredited as too sensationalist for serious scholarship, which invariably tricked down to novels that relied on Mackay's narrative, such as The Mississippi Bubble. Historians have revised their opinion about Mackay, but The Mississippi Bubble by Emerson Hough remains largely forgotten today. Even the Wikipedia entry about The Mississippi Bubble, which discusses the Mackay book, has no mention of this novel by Hough. No topic has been written about like the American West, so invariably some of the famous, earlier scribes have been replaced by more modern voices. Emerson Hough is an underrated chronicler of the American West, and his novels and historical works deserve a second look. With The Mississippi Bubble available for free on PG, maybe scholars can take a second look on this novel. I enjoyed reading the novel. This review is based on the original version of The Mississippi Bubble published in April 1902 by the Bowen-Merrill Company of Indianapolis, IN. There was a version of this book available for free from Project Gutenberg that had about thirty minor errors and variances with the paper version of the book. Those errors have recently been corrected by Project Gutenberg. The only real difference between the e-book from PG and the paper book, besides the medium, is the picture in the paper copy of the novel in Book 3, Chapter 4 is missing from the e-book from PG. The free version of the book from Amazon is not updated with the latest batch of corrections that have been installed by PG.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is fiction. By Customer Review This is a work of fiction about Law's Mississippi Scheme. Essentially, this book is a defense of John Law. Any non-fiction book about Law's Mississippi Scheme would likely be more informative and more interesting.

From the Author After years of working in large organizations in my native country of Israel, I was presented with the opportunity to live and work in the United States for a few years. As an organizational consultant who taught interpersonal communication, it was hard for me to accept the mistakes I made with my coworkers and managers in the American company. I therefore resolved to embark on a journey of studying my own and other cultures, and the gap between them. This ongoing journey includes in-depth interviews with managers from all over the world who share their experiences with me.This book, the product of my passion for the world of intercultural communication, integrates stories, research, my original model and practical tips, all of which together are meant to translate into your international business success. After reading the book, you will know how to behave most effectively in real time with your colleagues, clients, managers, employees and friends from that special place called Israel.

Second, it is very helpful as I consider how to best approach the Israeli market. Understanding the Israeli culture will give me an advantage, I am sure. I think Lautman should write books for different countries, using her same approach. I would most definitely be interested in reading those too.

"Discover the Vast Possibilities and Dangers of California in the Old West"

First published in 1913, the Classic Western Library Edition includes: - Foreword - B.M. Bower Publishing Timeline - Illustrations

THE GRINGOS

California has always been the land of possibility and danger. In “The Gringos,” B.M. Bower paints a portrait of a West that could make you rich or kill you, and you as the reader are going to make your way across its vastness to find your place in a new land filled with Mexicans, Spaniards and Americans—some friendly, some unfriendly; and with love around the corner waiting for you on a ranch, you won’t want to stop your journey. It’s time to hit the trail.

EDITORIAL REVIEW

“The Gringos” by B.M Bower is, perhaps, one of the best books about California in the Old West. Written in the imitable style of Bower and filled with quirky characters, ranch action and interplay between settlers, you will find yourself falling in love with not only the book, but the state. For those who have visited California, you will already know what to expect—the mountains, the trees and the ocean. For those who haven’t visited California, this book will take you closer than you’ve ever been. This is action-packed beauty at its very best.

Out with the old, in with the new By JLR I enjoyed this story for it's historical significance, I learned some things about the transition of California into a State. The insight into the lives of the Spaniards of California was interesting and illustrated the gulf between the cultures which sadly was not resolved very well. The ending is a surprise since it isn't exactly happily ever after but, undoubtedly realistic.

Wide ranging action story By Canyonjo I enjoyed the action and especially the male characters in this cowboy novel but also the glimpse into what early California was like while huge Mexican ranches still dominated the landscape, before the influx of white settlers. I've read many of Bower's novels and liked them, but this is my favorite.

Amazon's Book Cover is misleading By lesley9 The nude woman bookcover on Amazon's page seems to imply this is perhaps a racy type book which couldn't be further from the truth. It is a series of anecdotes about a @1900 English fictional couple in their 40s I'd guess who are childless.Very tame short humorous stories told by the husband about his life with his wife, Eliza. The couple are like an English version of George Burns and Gracie Allen.A gentle chuckle of a book. Get it free from MobileRead.

Excerpt from Illustrated Sketches of Death Valley and Other Borax Deserts of the Pacific CoastEarly in the year 1891, while a series of sketches made during a trip to the Cryolite mine in Greenland was running through the Sun, an associate on the staff of that paper, Mr. S. T. Mather, came to me and said:"Let me tell you where to go to get another lot of sketches; go out among the borax deserts of the Pacific Coast."Before the matter could be properly considered I was sent by the chief to Central America, and by the time I had returned home the deserts had been entirely forgotten. Afterward, while making some purchases in a grocery store, I noticed that the label on a package of borax was more or less (chiefly less) beautified by a picture of two wagons drawn by a string of mules that stretched out apparently for half a mile over a boundless plain. It is a poor soul that does not feel interested in even one mule with its driver, but to see a half-mile string of desert mules (possibly a new variety) with their driver, that would be a spectacle full of such stirring and hilarious possibilities. But to continue: Above and below the picture appeared the legend "Borax from the Deserts." That reminded me of what my friend had said, and I began to investigate the matter of a journey to the Pacific Coast deserts.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Review

"A book equally as distinguished as it is distinctive; and its substance guarantees as perpetual the sustained interest that pulsates throughout every chapter... No desert collection even merits the name without a copy of the Spears." -- E. I. Edwards, The Enduring Desert

Review

"Not many accounts about late nineteenth-century Death Valley exist, so Illustrated Sketches is an important addition to a small body of literature. Spears's writing is lively, the vignettes personable and appealing, the scenery intriguing." -- Ann Ronald, University of Nevada, Reno

The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane

From Library Journal Like the Carroll volume above, this edition of the seasoned veteran provides a new twist. Crane's Badge was originally serialized in the New York Press in 1894, a year before the story was published in novel form. This volume offers both the slightly different serial version and the finished work. Though every library no doubt has numerous copies of Red Badge, academic and public libraries supporting American literature curricula should pop for this one, too, especially at the price.Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review "The Red Badge Of Courage has long been considered the first great 'modern' novel of war by an American—the first novel of literary distinction to present war without heroics and this in a spirit of total irony and skepticism."—Alfred Kazin

When I saw that it was among the many other classics that are now available for free on the Kindle I happily took the opportunity to read it; I am glad that I did. There are plenty of reviews of the novel itself on the print version, so first a note about the Kindle Edition of this book: I found no typos or poor formatting of the text throughout the Kindle Edition, which is a nice change from many of the other free classics. The only problem with this edition is that the table of contents does not work. It looks as if it should, but it is apparently just a large image within the text file, instead of clickable links to the relevant sections of the book. This is not a big deal, but it is always nice to have a working table of contents for reference. As for the story: The Red Badge of Courage tells the story of Henry, often referred to as the "Youth," and his transformation over the course of a few days. Considering the author never fought in a war, his reflections on the the way battles can change a person are truly insightful, and at times even breath-taking. Stephen Crane also had a talent for describing the world around Henry allowing the reader to feel as if they are in the novel. The book is quite short, but Crane does a great job developing Henry's character. As Henry goes from scared, to terrified, to arrogant, and eventually humble, you find yourself actively liking and disliking Henry through his transformation, as if you were there. There are two particular literary devices Crane uses that I particularly enjoyed and make the novel poetic at times. First, almost all of the characters have both a name and them also a character description. For example, Henry is "the Youth," he has a friend "the loud youngster" and so on for all the main characters. This reinforces the idea that this is not just a book about a particular person or group of people, but about people in general. The second device is the way Crane uses common themes. So, the word red is used an adjective of the novel, just as it is in the title. Or, another example, Henry is walking through the woods that remind him of a chapel: from that moment there is a chorus, steeple, etc., used as adjectives and metaphors for the next few pages. This is truly poetic.I am grateful that there are teams of volunteers that put this material together and release it for free for the Kindle. The Red Badge of Courage was a quick and entertaining read: if, like me, you did not have the chance to read it when you were younger I would certainly recommend it.

Not a kids' book By Amazon Customer As a British reader, I just recently read and reviewed this book over on Amazon.co.uk, and I thought I'd have a look at the US reviews for comparison - and immediately realised that this is obviously a "set book" in US schools. I can see the logic - the book is about a young person, it's short and (superficially) exciting, with lots of action, and it has some good moral/ethical themes ripe for class discussion.Nonetheless, I was not surprised to see a number of negative reviews from kids. I don't think I would have appreciated it as a 13 (or whatever) year old. The writing style (deliberately) reflects the state of mind of the protagonist - confused. This in NOT an "adventure" story, it's a blood-and-guts account of a dirty day in a dirty war. As such, it reminded me very much of some of the recent first-hand accounts of infantrymen in WWII, Korea, Vietnam or even Iraq. It's about the way the mind can obsess on tiny details in the middle of chaos - how sights, smells and sounds become almost hallucinogenic as the mind approaches breaking point. As such, it is astonishing. But if you want a REAL adventure story (not suitable for the under-13s!) read a biography of Crane himself. Hemingway meets James Dean is the only way to describe it.

Allison (dallison@biochem.med.ufl.edu) When I was in high school several years ago, this was one of the books required in one of my English classes. And, upon going through the many reviews below, I find that it is still a required book for today's students. But, several appear to find Crane's novel "boring," "difficult to read," and nothing that they can "relate to." I heard many of the same things in the early 1960s. But, then I found myself in an environment not too dissimilar of the main character of the novel. It suddenly became relevent and real. Crane's depiction of war and the thoughts of young men at war, both willing and unwilling, will always be relevant. This novel is the psychological study of a young soldier and his first encounters with the brutality seen in battle (many critics have regarded this book as the first modern war novel). The unnamed battle in the novel is probably Chancellorsville (1863). The young infantryman, Henry Fielding, faces his first battle wanting to prove himself a hero. However, when the battle is actually thrust upon him, he is overcome by fear and he runs. He joins the wounded but he has not won their "red badge of courage." He sees his friend Jim Conklin killed and he becomes enraged, particularly at the injustice of war. (I remember noting the significance of the initials J. C. for the soldier's friend; but, I later discovered that this observation was not original. The novel is filled with imagery. For example, even the horsemen of the apocalypse make an appearance.) This is a great novel and I hope it remains on reading lists for years to come.

Jack Woolsey enlisted at the age of 19 in the Army Air Corps and flew 35 missions over Germany as a Liberator navigator. He survived and became a member of the Lucky Bastards Club. He wrote weekly letters to his family from the time he left California through his basic and navigational training in Texas and Idaho, and continued the letters from his base near Norwich in the UK while he flew his mission. His father saved all the original letters and actual mission maps and mission statements in albums that became known to Jack's family shortly before his death. The transposed letters reflect a young man's real experiences and transition though the war. There is no enhancement or editing of this collection of letters and photographs. This makes this collection historically significant. True WWII enthusiasts will appreciate the significance. Jack's letters during basic and navigational training are rare. Before he died, he read The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s Over Germany 1944-45 by Stephen Ambrose. He said that book truly reflected his experience of military life. The letters support this sentiment. This is a must read for historians and descendants of WWII Liberator crewmen. This is how some of the "greatest generation" became a powerful fighting force.

"Jack's War": An American airman's story of his personal role in World War II By Roger Monty A superb, matter-of-fact account of a young American aviator's experiences as bomber navigator in World War II, from the long months of frustration and boredom in the Army's famously Byzantine and maddeningly arcane training system, to the nuts-and-bolts details of 35 deadly missions over enemy territory.

By Tom M Westmoreland His letters home made me feel like I was with him on his journey as a young air force serviceman. I found it very personable, informative and entertaining.

Memories of Farm Life By ILoveMiami I remember reading this book as a teenager growing up in rural Australia.I could relate to it since it reflected some of the hardships my family had; trying to raise five children on a farm, that was always indebted to the bank and town merchants. In the 1950's there was a serial on the radio, called "Dad and Dave", that was based on the books main characters. So, after fifty years it was a nostalgic journey to read the book again. It's not Bill Bryson or Dave Barry, but if you were raised poor. you can still laugh at the anecdotes.

It is full of Aussie humor and there is a smile on nearly every page, some passages had me laughing out loud. But be warned, if you did not grow up in the Aussie bush you may not see the funny situations as they are perceived by the author.I thoroughly recommend this book to all.

Living in a slab hut and trying to keep a family alive in primitive circumstances. After reading this book and the "New Selection" I just ahd to go on the web and download short videos of the Rudds.

Excerpt from The Life, Travels and Books of Alexander Von HumboldtThere are several biographies of Humboldt, French, German, and English, but none of any importance, except Professor Klencke's. Klencke had an excellent opportunity to make a good book, for much of his material was obtained from Humboldt himself, but he failed to do so. He seemed to have no idea of writing, beyond its being a means of conveying facts. His facts are reliable, but bunglingly arranged, without order or method. He says the same thing over and over again, and entirely lacks the chief requisite of a biographer - the art of making his subject attractive. Still, he is reliable, and the author has made considerable use of his work, especially in Book I.The first five chapters of Book II. are taken from Humboldt's "Voyage aux Régions Equinoxiales." As these chapters cover an important epoch in Humboldt's life, it was thought advisable to let him tell his own story, and this has accordingly been done, wherever it was practicable, the relation being changed from the first person to the third - from autobiography to narrative.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
