Rattlesnake Dreams is my memoir. It begins April 19, 1966, in the Viet village of Tho An, near Chu Lai. I was attached to Foxtrot Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines. We are in the process of destroying Tho An, after we received hostile fire from the village. The story leaves Tho An to tell several chapters from my childhood growing up in Washington and Oregon, then a year in studies of engineering at Oregon State University, which I left in 1962 to get my military obligation out of the way. I joined the US Marine Corps, where I served 4 years. Then I entered Colorado College as a sophomore, studying Philosophy and Political Science. I was the Nam vet who always had 3 or 4 books under my arm, and was reading them all. I had to find some kind of understanding about what I, and indeed the world, had just lived through. I graduated in 1969, cum laude, then spent that summer in Leningrad, in a course of Advanced Russian language. My fellow students and I spent a few days on our way home in Prague, Czechoslovakia, arriving just in time for the Soviet Army to re-invade the city on the first anniversary of their 1968 invasion of the country. We were tear gassed in Wenceslas Square, and ran from the Russian troops. Besides those episodes, my memoir includes journalism stories from Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos, Nicaragua, Honduras, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Miami... always seeking some kind of answer to my life's question: Why War?

About the Author Dean Metcalf is a US Marine Corps veteran who served four years: in Vietnam, Okinawa, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, South China Sea, and the Gulf of Tonkin. After leaving the service with an Honorable Discharge, he studied at Colorado College, majoring in Philosophy and Political Science. He graduated Cum Laude in 1969, studied Advanced Russian Language that summer in Leningrad, and in the Fall entered University of California at Santa Cruz in the History of Consciousness Program, pursuing a Ph.D. In the Spring of 1971, a post-combat nightmare (Dream: A6 and Wolves, RATTLESNAKE DREAMS, p. 311) blasted him out of graduate school and onto the road. He drifted to the Oregon coast, working as a deck hand on albacore boats, then returned to grad school and was advanced to Doctoral Candidacy in June, 1972, then quit academia again. Worked 30 years as journeyman carpenter and general building contractor. Trained in martial arts about 22 years, and founded Wallowa County (Oregon) Tae Kwon Do Academy. He has also worked as a wildland firefighter in Oregon, 2001-'02. Between jobs, for the last 19 years, he has been writing RATTLESNAKE DREAMS, his memoir of service in Vietnam, and of journalism in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Leningrad, Moscow, Baku, Kiev, Prague... always trying to understand why we go to war. This book is the result of that experience, and that study. It was written in the hope of keeping at least one, or a few, of the young ones alive.

It was a second birth, to be sure, but the word is not too strong: we became different people, seeing the world through different eyes than the ones we had grown up with. This was not only a matter of experiencing a different culture, and not only a matter of facing mortality at too young an age. It was a matter of the foundations of belief shifting in a fundamental way that forced us to re-examine our lives and the way we needed to move in the world . That sea change began for Dean Metcalf when he held a group of women and kids and an old man at bayonet point, while their village burned. His life thereafter was compelled to an exploration of the rooted causes and nature of war, violence and inhumanity, a quest that led him from Asia to Russia, from Central America to the Middle East and elsewhere, at times a witness to the lies of governments and the consequences of those lies and other failures of human imagination, at other times a witness to, and a model of, the triumphs of the human spirit. Dean is the kind of man we don't see much of any more: a Richard Burton absent the colonial romanticism, a scholar independent of institutions, preconceptions and pretentiousness; a warrior without an army, and a compassionate traveler to the broken places of the earth and to the truths of the mind and heart. He is also, luckily for us, a hell of a writer.

Dean Metcalf takes us with him on his personal and universal experiences of growing up male in the USA and the culture of war and manhood. Cover design by Cruz Ortiz Zamarron. I couldn't put this book down: one of those books that keeps you up way later than you should be, that you wake up thinking about and that you are sad when you get to the last page. Thanks for a good, meaningful read.

Jackson Dean Metcalf grew up in what could easily be referred to as "the best of times and the worst of times." From modest beginnings as a child in the Pacific Northwest to the darkest of human nightmares, Metcalf chronicles his personal journey in a compelling first-person narrative that defies you to stop reading...you simply cannot.Beyond the author's powerful literary style lies his deceptively straightforward language that makes you feel as though your are eavesdropping on his most private thoughts. As a reader, I look for literary quality and a story line that grabs and holds my attention. "RATTLESNAKE DREAMS" is that kind of a book, and Dean Metcalf is that kind of an author. I'll avoid details of the story itself, as fascinating as they are in every chapter of the book, and recommend you read it for yourself for the following reasons:1. It is a magnificent literary achievement.2. It is exceedingly well-written and compelling.3. It is so personal it's impossible to stop reading.4. It covers a period in our not-so-distant American history, that was so important to us socially, economically, philosophically, and technologically it created a whole new culture: from American Grafitti, to the Beatles, Jonathan Livingston Seagull to the Hanoi Hilton, hippies and yuppies to Wall Street, and a new attitude about war. But mostly, it is one man's journey into and out of the darkness that resides within us all, told with humor, candor, fear, and a need to be told. You will read this book more than once.
