On April 2, 1917, the United States officially entered a war that had been raging for nearly three years in Europe. Even though America’s involvement in the “Great War” lasted little more than a year and a half, the changes it wrought were profound. More than seventy thousand Arkansans served as soldiers during the war. Wartime propaganda led to suspicions directed against Germans, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and African Americans in Arkansas, but war production proved a boon to the state in the form of greater demand for cotton, minerals, and timber. World War I connected Arkansas to the world in ways that changed the state and its people forever, as shown in the essays collected here.

On the homefront military bases such as Camp Pike and Eberts Field were built to train soldiers in the new technologies of killing, while the American Red Cross provided civilians, especially women, a way to support the troops.Wartime propaganda led to suspicions directed against Germans, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and African Americans in Arkansas, but war production proved a boon to the state in the form of greater cotton, mineral, and timber demands. In politics, members of the Arkansas congressional delegation also played an important role in the discussions that ultimately resulted in the U.S. going to war. They were at the forefront to lead the war effort, helped to achieve a peaceful resolution to the war, and finally worked to determine the role of a politically divided America in the post-war era.In the twelve thoughtful and scholarly essays which comprise To Can the Kaiser, the authors tell the story of how World War I connected Arkansas to the world in ways that changed the state and its people forever. This book is a valuable contribution to the history of America's first "Great war."

"[...]transfer their equipment to the shore. Besides their tent, they had a Primus stove, a kettle, a couple of saucepans, pots, cups and plates of enamel, pewter forks and, stainless knives, cases of provisions, three sleeping-bags, three folding stools, and other oddments. While Warrender and Armstrong were stretching and pegging out the tent, Pratt started the stove, filled the kettle from the river, and assembled such utensils as they needed for their tea. These operations were punctuated by renewed sounds of shooting, which were drawing nearer through the woods that skirted the clearing. "I say, you chaps," cried Pratt, "I wonder if I talked nicely, if I could coax out of them something gamey for supper to-night?" "Wouldn't you like to sing for your supper, like little Tommy Tucker?" said Armstrong.[...]".

Most yachtsmen dream about cruising to an exotic destination; this is the book that will turn dreamers into planners. 24 classic cruises are fully mapped, measured and costed, showing how they are perfectly possible whatever your skill level. From weekend cruises around the British Isles to a voyage to Antarctica, and from Greek island cruises to an escape to the Virgin Islands, this book explores where to go, why, how to get there and what to expect en route. The book breaks down each cruise into important considerations, such as what type of boat is needed, what level of skill or qualifications are required, whether it is a suitable journey to undertake with a young family, what possible dangers might influence any decision (from extreme weather to the threat of piracy), and most obviously, cost. Covering popular, exotic cruising destinations such as Thailand and the Virgin Islands, as well as unexpected, almost secret routes along the US Intracoastal Waterway and French canals, as well as proper adventures (including both Atlantic and Pacific crossings), this inspirational may be the starting point for the voyage of a lifetime.

Carlingford is the name of a town, and the characters in her series all live in the same town, so you will meet them again and again as you read through the series. The book is very sweet and appropriate for bedtime reading. It takes place at a time when women wore bonnets, people traveled by horse and carriage, and a woman's marriage was of consuming concern. If you like Jane Austen, you will probably like this, although of course the dialogue is not quite as clever. The tale involves the local doctor and a feisty young woman he falls in love with. But there is an impediment to their love, and it's one that will drive you insane. The main characters are likeable, well-drawn and delightfully frustrating. I will definitely finish the series. The Carlingford series books in order: The Rector, The Doctor's Family, Salem Chapel, The Perpetual Curate, Miss Marjoribanks, Phoebe, Junior. You might want to download Phoebe, Junior from the Project Gutenberg website using your USB cord (it doesn't show up in the Magic Catalog, for some reason). The edition from this publisher contains a typo in the main character's name that continues throughout the book. For more information about the Magic Catalog, see A Kindle World Blog.

McGinn I didn't know anything about Margaret Oliphant when I started reading this novel, except that she wrote long enough ago that you can find her works for Kindle free on Amazon or Gutenberg.org. I know a little more about her now. She had a difficult life, but like Nettie in this book, she seemed to just get on with it. Three of her six children died in infancy and her husband died young also, leaving her to support her family through her writing. She was popular in her day, even though her name faded, unlike Dickens and Trollope, who wrote around the same time.I agree with K.E. Fuhrmann's review when it states that the dialogue isn't as sharp and witty as Jane Austen, but I like that Nettie is a strong female character, something you don't always find in the classics (though Susan is an irritatingly weak character!)This being a 19th century novel, you will find long paragraphs and passages of descriptions and thought processes of the characters, so this isn't a book to read while watching TV or otherwise dividing your attention. At least I couldn't. Back then there was no TV of course, so authors provided every detail so as to fire up the reader's imagination and place them deep in the story. There are only a few plot twists in this book, so I will not give any of them away. I had an idea what was going to happen, but I write novels myself and probably thought about possible plot development more than some readers. It was a pleasant read overall and I recommend it if you enjoy major and minor classic fiction. The review I mentioned above also contains a list of the books in this series. This book is apparently the second one in the series and I read it first, but I don't expect that to detract from my enjoyment of reading the rest of the series. And speaking of which, now I need to go back and read that first book!

I read them pretty much in reverse order, and now I am going to look for the first one in the series. The Doctor's Family is the second one. It is a "sweet" story, not as complicated as are some of Oliphant's novels with several minor plots in addition to the main one. The "colony" in Australia comes into this story, and that is an interesting factor. I met Dr. Rider in the book entitled Miss Marjoribanks. At that point, he was a married man, but I had no idea that the story of his romance was so complicated. I really want to read an autobiography or biography of Margaret Oliphant' life. I am not sure which book is the best to purchase. I have the book called The Works of Margaret Oliphant, and I read The Doctor's Family in that book. I don't necessarily want to duplicate too many of her books on my Kindle.

The Spanish conquest of the Americas in the 16th century was one of the most important and cataclysmic events in history. Spanish expeditions endured incredible hardships in order to open up the lands of the 'New World', and few stories in history can match these for drama and endurance. In Conquistadors, Michael Wood follows in the footsteps of some of the greatest of the Spanish adventurers travelling from the forests of Amazonia to Lake Titicaca, the deserts of North Mexico, the snowpeaks of the Andes and the heights of Machu Picchu. He experiences the epic journeys of Cortes, Pizarro, Orellana and Cabeza de Vaca, and explores the turbulent and terrifying events surrounding the Spanish conquest of the Aztec and Inca empires.Wood brings these stories to vivid life, highlighting both the heroic accomplishments and the complex moral legacy of the European invasion. Conquistadors is Michael Wood at his best - thoughtful, provocative and gripping history.

Conquistadors, by Michael Wood

Amazon.com Review First the Trojan War, then the eras of Alexander the Great and King Arthur. Now, in this companion volume to the BBC/PBS television series, the indefatigable writer-filmmaker Michael Wood turns his lens and pen on the restless, sometimes homicidal men who established Spain's empire in the Americas.

"The conquest opened up the world," Wood writes, "marking the beginnings of a globalization which was not only commercial, but also ideological and philosophical, a remaking of mental horizons no less than a redrawing of physical geography." Grand themes all, but Wood is less interested in sweeping statements than in exploring the particular circumstances surrounding the careers of Spain's freebooter-warriors. Following in their footsteps, Wood takes his readers first to the dusty, bleak Spanish province of Estremadura, which gave rise to a remarkable generation of conquerors, hungry for land and wealth and well schooled in the arts of war. One of those men, Hernán Cortés, was also schooled in law--or so his contemporaries thought--and he was able to turn a talent for fighting and learned disputation into a great personal fortune made first in Cuba, then in Mexico, which he won not so much with weaponry but with great cunning. Another, Francisco Pizarro--a distant cousin of Cortés--recruited a semiprivate army to capture the great Inca empire, relying on force more than guile. Wood also follows the paths of Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca and Francisco Orellana, accidental wanderers who helped open the interiors of North and South America to conquest. His latter-day, low-tech journeys underscore the difficulties the conquistadors faced in their time, and they help readers appreciate the sheer scale of their often bloody achievements. The story of the conquest, Wood writes, "never wearies in the retelling," and he proves it in this accessible, literate, and lively book. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly In Conquistadors, journalist and filmmaker Michael Wood (In Search of the Trojan War) travels the routes of the Spanish explorers and conquerors (and often by the same means, including a homemade balsa raft on Coca River rapids) the length and breadth of South and Central America and some of North America as well. With photos, maps and illustrations adorning nearly every page, the book examines records of the conquests both by the invaders and the native peoples. A 1613 letter from Peruvian historian Waman Poma to the king of Spain appealing for humane treatment of Indians, Gonzalo Pizarro's catalogue of the infamous El Dorado misadventures, Cabeza de Vaca's account of crossing North America and Geronimo de Aguilar's diary of the Night of Tears (when Aztecs fought back and killed 600 Spaniards) are among the numerous firsthand accounts Wood presents. (Univ. of California, $27.50 288p ISBN 0-520-23064-7)

From Booklist Renowned for his popular works on a series of historical subjects, documentarian Wood turns his attention to the Spanish conquest of the Americas. Retracing the legendary paths of the sixteenth-century conquistadors, he juxtaposes his contemporary journey with the travels and adventures of Cortes, Pizarro, Orellana, and de Vaca. In addition to outlining the destruction of both the Aztec and the Incan empires, he examines the moral, cultural, and spiritual consequences of the European invasion. Accompanied by a series of striking color photographs, the digestible narrative provides a provocative overview of a historical episode that was both magnificent and shameful. Sure to be in demand when PBS airs a four-part companion series. Margaret FlanaganCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Trekking the paths of the Conquistadors By Jonathon Flegg This exciting and well illustrated read traces the incredible expeditions of some of the most famous Spainish Conquistadors. Michael Woods travels along the tropical Amazon and to Everglades of Florida in search of the original route of the likes of Cortez and Pizarro. But this is not just an adventure story but also an accurate conveyance of history and the personalities of the time. He also manages to discuss the history on a thematic level - approaching issues such as human rights and colonialism. The illustrations are beautiful and add to the sense of wonder first experienced when viewed for the first time from European eyes.5 stars - thoroughly worth purchasing for any history buff!

12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant! By Timothy Perkins I fully expected this to be another dry, somnolent history book. Was I ever wrong! Michael Wood has written a conversational account of some of the most gripping yet unreported events in this hemisphere. Trust me on this: you will love his style and his expertise. Wood puts you in the mind of Cortes, Pizarro, and de Vaca and passionately paints the history created by these men. This book will make you want to walk in their footsteps.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Conquest of Latin America By Frank J. Konopka This is an extremely well-written book that gives a cursory history of the Spanish conquest of Latin America. We read of the fall of the Aztecs and the Incas, as well as other trips of discovery undertaken by the Spanish explorers in the early part of the 16th century. The book is too short to give a detailed discussion of each of these events, but it does "hit the highlights", as it were. For anyone interested in further reading or study, there are a multitude of works available, but for the casual reader, this is an excellent introduction to what may be considered the beginnings of Europen-style civilization on this continent.

Advanced metaphysics, easy to grasp By Peter Uys In the first three lectures Troward explores the nature of the Originating or Parent Spirit, the generic relationship of the individual to this all-encompassing spirit, and the way to specialize this relationship in order to obtain greater results than would spontaneously arise by mere generic action. This process is attainable only by a new way of thinking. The sequence implies the realization of a power, an individual to understand it, and the method of applying it based on understanding its nature. He talks of the life of the spirit and mankind as the vehicle or distribution medium, and explains the principle of receptiveness and its importance. The concept of Alpha and Omega designates the entire series of causation from the originating moment to the completed result. Although thought creates form, it is feeling that provides vitality to thought: the heart and mind of the matter. In this light, he discusses the Messiah and the great affirmative I AM which is the principle of being.Stressing the Oneness of God, Troward emphasizes the fact that Spirit creates from nothing. God is one and this oneness finds root in ourselves, hence the expression "My Father and I are one." Thus the Creative Process proceeds in the individual. The Messiah as fulfillment of the law relates to the importance of individual improvement, serving as both explanatory cause and as a display of the full measure of effects. He argues that the better we understand the creative process, the more the objections to the gospel narratives lose their force. The author emphasizes the significance of Monogenesis in relation to the esoteric teaching of the musical octave that fulfills itself in step seven in order to start a new series in the eighth, which becomes the first step again. He hints at a more profound understanding of the doctrine of Christ reflecting deeper phases of the law of being. Other topics dealt with include the legend of the Garden of Eden, the doctrine of the fall and the Animus Dei becoming a husband to the soul rather than a master as more comprehensively investigated in his book Bible Mystery and Bible Meaning.A very valid point is the vast difference between worship based on fear, ignorance and/or unexplained traditions versus worship in spirit and truth which takes place through reciprocity. Troward's views of the loving givingness of spirit correspond to the nature of the Father as outlined in the epilogue of The Authentic Gospel of Jesus by Geza Vermes. This mutual love is the mystical marriage that gives birth to an ever improving individual personality in an everlasting process of growth. The metaphor of the shepherd and the stone from Genesis 49:24, Daniel and the New Testament finds its fulfillment in Messiah. Finally, the author looks at the role of certain nations and religions in history as the expression of the Spirit on both a universal and specialized level. Further relevant information may be found in the last two chapters of Alter Your Life by Emmet Fox. Troward remarks that those who oppose the Hebrew nation must fail by a self-destructive principle inherent in the very nature of the position they adopt. The ultimate message of the lectures is that exterior things are changed by a change in the interior spiritual attitude of the individual. The Messiah represents the principle of love and the new life. For further mystical interpretations of the Judeo-Christian scriptures and tradition that reveal and illuminate, I refer the interested reader to The Hidden Power of the Bible by Ernest Holmes, The Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox, The Hidden Book in the Bible by Richard Friedman and Cracking the Bible Code by Jeffrey Satinover.

'We request an immediate favour of you, to build a shelter for us women and small children, because we have absolutely no place to take refuge and we are terrified!' This French mother's petition sent to her mayor on the eve of Germany's 1940 invasion of France reveals civilians' security concerns unleashed by Second World War Blitzkrieg fighting tactics. Unprepared for air warfare's assault on civilian psyches, French planners were among the first in history to respond to civilian security challenges posed by aerial bombardment. France Under Fire offers a social, political and military examination of the origins of the French refugee crisis of 1940, a mass displacement of eight million civilians fleeing German combatants. Scattered throughout a divided France, refugees turned to German Occupation officials and Vichy administrators for relief and repatriation. Their solutions raised questions about occupying powers' obligations to civilians and elicited new definitions of refugees' rights.

France under Fire: German Invasion, Civilian Flight and Family Survival during World War II (Studies in the Social and Cultural History of Modern Warfare), by Dr Nicole Dombrowski Risser

Review "Using dramatic personal testimony, Dombrowski Risser uncovers how the 1940 "Exodus" politicized women, what the longer-term repercussions of mass migration were, and how refugee return policies were used to exclude Jews and other "undesirables". France under Fire significantly enriches historical scholarship on civilian displacement, German-French interplay during the French occupation, and ethnic cleansing during World War Two." Julia Torrie, St Thomas University"Risser's findings make a real contribution to our knowledge of this historical episode, now remote but still within living memory." Ian Birchall, European History Quarterly

About the Author Nicole Dombrowski Risser is Associate Professor of History at Towson University in Maryland. She is editor of Women and War in the Twentieth Century: Enlisted With or Without Consent (1998).

Very short story By Amazon Customer It's a quick read; the characters, though interesting, are not deep, and the dialogue is quite confusing in some places - either I wasn't sure who was supposed to be speaking (the voices weren't clearly distinquishable), or the dialogue itself was confusing. It seems to end quite abruptly, to the point that you have to assume it was a happy ending. Still, if you're looking for something short to read, this is a one-time event.

The author does not intend to apologize for what many readers may call the "brutality" of the story; but rather to explain that its wild spirit is true to the life of the Western border as it was known only a little more than one hundred years ago. The writer is the fortunate possessor of historical material of undoubted truth and interest. It is the long-lost journal of Colonel Ebenezer Zane, one of the most prominent of the hunter-pioneer, who labored in the settlement of the Western country.

The Spirit of the Border: A Romance of the Early Settlers in the Ohio Valley, by Zane Grey

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

Drawn from personal family history, he captures the brutality and the compassion of the early pioneers and the Indian nations that they were dispossessing.Lewis Wetzel "Le vent de la mort", (Death Wind) is a prominent figure in this book. Wetzel is a genuine historical personage and is accurately portrayed as both a guardian to the border settlements and the Indian hater and killer he was known to be.The book follows the life and adventures of two brothers Jim and Joe, Jim a Christian missionary and Joe a gregarious newcomer to frontier life. Wetzel always known as a loner, develops a friendship with the young man Joe and trains him in the ways of forest woodcraft. All the while Jim struggles to strengthen and protect the already established Morvian Indian mission. All of this set against the intrigue of Indian politics, war and the rampaging murders and kidnappings of the white renegades Simon and Jim Girty.Although an historical novel, Zane Grey uses the various characters and happenings as a vehicle to give us a clear picture of the sentiment surrounding the precarious daily life for both the defenders of the Indian nations and those who acted as the American border rangers.

Ramey Drawing upon ancestors notes, Zane Gray reconstructs the agony of America's initial transmontane western movement of the frontier away from the original colonies into the OHIO Valley where Indians and Whites contest for souls and Wetzel, and Indian hunter, pursues his cause in a most dramatic fashion. The book is a riveting account of true adventure the veiled backdrop of which is the continued occupation of the teritory occupied by British and Americans. An excellent introduction to further study of the the then misunderstood goal of Manifest Destiny.

The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come; Delivered under the Similitude of a Dream is a Christian allegory written by John Bunyan (1628–1688) and published in February, 1678. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature, has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print. Bunyan began his work while in the Bedfordshire county prison for violations of the Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. Early Bunyan scholars like John Brown believed The Pilgrim's Progress was begun in Bunyan's second, shorter imprisonment for six months in 1675,but more recent scholars like Roger Sharrock believe that it was begun during Bunyan's initial, more lengthy imprisonment from 1660–72 right after he had written his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners.

The Pilgrim's Progress, by John Bunyan

Review Next to the Bible, the book I value most is John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress. --Charles Spurgeon

Review

"This classic has refreshed my spirit time and again when my soul has longed for Christ-centered guidance through a maze of modern detours and diversions. I'm so grateful this special edition of The Pilgrim's Progress is now available to not only a new generation of Christians but to believers like myself who need direction and refreshment along our journey toward Home." —Joni Eareckson Tada, Founder and CEO, Joni and Friends International Disability Center

"If any smoothing of Bunyan's seventeenth-century language plus new colored pictures can set Pilgrim's Progress aglow in the hearts of today's young readers, this lovely book will surely do it." —J. I. Packer, Board of Governors' Professor of Theology, Regent College

"Every generation is heir to John Bunyan's timeless allegory, and to each generation falls the task of commending this tale anew. The collaboration of editor C. J. Lovik and illustrator Mike Wimmer has yielded a book that could well be a classic for our time. With great care, Lovik has combined the best elements of Bunyan's rich, evocative prose with accessibility for the modern reader. And in Wimmer, Bunyan has met his illustrator for the twenty-first century. The thirty illustrations that grace this edition are a world in themselves-the equal of any that appear in J.R.R. Tolkien's books." —Kevin Belmonte, Lead Historical Consultant, motion picture Amazing Grace

"If you are looking for a classic edition of The Pilgrim's Progress, with a simplified form of Bunyan's original text, traditional color illustrations, and explanatory notes, this is undoubtedly the version for you." —Tim Dowley, Author of The Christians

"For two centuries following its publication (Part 1 in 1678, Part 2 in 1684), The Pilgrim's Progress gained the status of best-read book (apart from the Bible). This magnificent production by Crossway with stunning illustrations by Mike Wimmer should help reinstate Bunyan's classic allegory to the status it belongs. It should be a question we ask ourselves: Have I read The Pilgrim's Progress? If not, repent immediately, for in taking up this volume you will find pastoral insights from a pastor of souls to help you discover the biblical way of salvation and aid you in the journey home." —Derek W. H. Thomas, Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina; Robert Strong Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary

"C. J. Lovik's new edition of The Pilgrim's Progress almost takes one's breath away. The text is readable, the notes are clear, and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. This is a book to be in everyone's library and will definitely occupy a prominent place in the libraries provided for Rafiki's children and adults in Africa. It is a joy to know that Lovik's edition of the Bunyan classic will be read by and to thousands of children throughout the world." —Rosemary Jensen, Founder and President, Rafiki Foundation; Author of Praying the Attributes of God and Living the Words of Jesus

"This is one of the best books I've ever read." —Mark Dever, Senior Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington DC; President, 9Marks

"The Pilgrim's Progress has long been a favorite of many. Now there is even more to love with this beautiful, updated edition. Editor's notes clarify the ideas in John Bunyan's classic allegory, while footnotes show where in Scripture Bunyan found them. The detailed color illustrations will delight both new readers and long-time lovers of this beloved tale." —Starr Meade, Author of Keeping Holiday and Training Hearts, Teaching Minds

"Like countless others, I have been greatly influenced by The Pilgrim's Progress. Charles Spurgeon called it 'next to the Bible, the book that I value most.' It has already inspired generations, and I am confident that this new edition will inspire the rising generation. It is refreshingly readable while remaining true to this timeless classic. The illustrations, Scripture references, and study notes make it a superb resource for family devotions and study groups." —Susan Hunt, former Director of Women's Ministries, PCA; coauthor, Women's Ministry in the Local Church

"The longer I journey through our dear Immanuel's land, the more grateful I am for John Bunyan's 'dream' and the cruel imprisonment that occasioned it. What a gift weary travelers have been given in this precious, timeless classic-and what beauty, insight, and encouragement was borne out of his suffering! Unafraid to challenge the outward trials of moralism, materialism, and persecution, humble enough to confess his own doubts and despair, Bunyan leads us on our way to the Celestial City we long to see. And what a gift modern readers have been blessed with in C. J. Lovik's careful editing and Mike Wimmer's luminous illustrations! This book is beautiful! The Pilgrim's Progress has always been a cherished treasure, but this edition makes Christian's story-our story-sing! I'm so thankful for it!" —Elyse M. Fitzpatrick, counselor; speaker; author, Found in Him

"If a picture truly does speak a thousand words, this version of Pilgrim's Progress will be the best of all. Combining the beauty of Mike Wimmer's illustrations with this timeless classic is a stroke of genius."—Steve Murphy, Publisher, Homeschooling Today magazine

From the Back Cover

Often rated as important as the Bible as a Christian document, this famous story of man's progress through life in search of salvation remains one of the most entertaining allegories of faith ever written. Set against realistic backdrops of town and country, the powerful drama of the pilgrim's trials and temptations follows him in his harrowing journey to the Celestial City.Along a road filled with monsters and spiritual terrors, Christian confronts such emblematic characters as Worldly Wiseman, Giant Despair, Talkative, Ignorance, and the demons of the Valley of the Shadow of Death. But he is also joined by Hopeful and Faithful. An enormously influential 17th-century classic, universally known for its simplicity, vigor, and beauty of language, The Pilgrim's Progress remains one of the most widely read books in the English language.

Edward Hazelbaker's unabridged revision of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress. Last summer I taught Pilgrim's Progress in my elementary Sunday School class and I wish I would have known of this book then. I have also done a college level research paper on Pilgrim's Progress. Not only does Hazelbaker make Pilgrim's Progress reader-friendly, he includes Bunyan's annotations in the text, as well as many annotations of his own. The annotations help the reader to experience more than a pilgrimage with Christian to Celestial City, but an in-depth Bible study as well. Other features the book includes are a brief description of Bunyan's life, a comparison outline of events in Parts I and II, and an index.Access to Bunyan's scripture references gives the serious reader the opportunity to better his or her understanding of Bunyan's work while Hazelbaker's references and annotations also compliment the text. Hazelbaker, for example, elaborates on the importance of the seal that a Shining One (an angel) places upon Christian's forehead and on the Document given to him. Hazelbaker also offers his audience a clear and detailed understanding of the "Family" that resides in the palace called Beautiful. The reader will appreciate Hazelbaker's explanation of Bunyan's reference to "the goods of Rome" at Vanity Fair and why it would have been significant to the first readers of The Pilgrim's Progress. Hazelbaker also takes the time to explain to the reader why he uses the word "coat" for "bosom." These are only a few of the many helpful annotations Hazelbaker includes in his work.In studying Hazelbaker's translation I referred to an early edition of Bunyan's several times. Each time I found Hazelbaker's translation true to Bunyan. Hazelbaker has made special effort to maintain the characteristic qualities and message of Bunyan's original work. In the translation process, he manages to preserve Bunyan's work by keeping himself removed from the text. This is his duty and obligation as a translator. His translation is, in all honesty, unabridged and non-paraphrased.Of the 215 pages I have studied to date, I have found only one minor word choice in Hazelbaker's translation that I wish he would not have made. He translates Bunyan's "cartloads" with "truckloads" in the Swamp of Despondence episode. Although, by definition, "truckloads" is acceptable, it too easily causes confusion for the modern reader who thinks of pickups and tractor-trailers when he reads "truckloads." This is certainly a minor concern, but I mention it in an effort to objective.Hazelbaker has done an exceptional job of making Bunyan's beautiful classic more appealing to the modern audience. This unabridged version is suitable for readers from middle and upper elementary ages to adults. I am glad to see that Hazelbaker has taken the time and made the effort to offer his audience a version of Pilgrim's Progress that is not watered-down and compromised. It definitely deserves a place in any library.

If you are not a lit snob you will love it By didntvoteforhillary I decided to go ahead and get this version of Pilgrims Progress in spite of...nay even because of the unfavorable reviews. I noticed that those who revere the antiquated English of the original version wrote their reviews in modern English, and I would guess that they also speak in modern English. Therefore why must one labor through a book written in an antiquated language when a more readable version...written in language closer to that which you use everyday...is available? Put it this way...if you enjoy reading your Bible in the King James version then by all means stick with the original Pilgrims Progress. If you prefer to read your Bible in one of the more modern English formats, then you will enjoy this version. I think you will find it delightful, inspiring and thought provoking. Don't let the lit snobs guilt you into buying what you may not like and therefore won't read. This has nothing to do with dumbing down or lack of reading comprehension or anything like that. It is simply personal preference.

The book was on the preferred reading list for new students, and so I picked up a copy without knowing anything about it. For those who may have read a "modern English" version of this classic, I'd say go back and read it again in its original form. I've read both, and I prefer the book the way it was written and published in 1678. It reads somewhat like a script, with sections beginning with the name of the person talking, and a constant barrage of characters coming and going. The book begins with an apology from the author in the form of prose - John Bunyan was a very humble man who spent years in prison for his religious beliefs. My copy also includes a fascimile of the orginal title page from the first edition. The story follows the life of a man named Christian and his travels through the world, trying to find the Celestial city and have the burden on his back removed. As with everything in this story, there is no hiding the truth about who the characters are and what they want with the protagonist - all of the names are quite literal in their descriptions of the characters. For example, he encounters people named Piety, Simple, Sloth, and Presumption. And throughout the story, his burden is literally a heavy weight on his back. The book has two section, both written in the similitude of a dream. The language is rich and beautiful (which is why I recommend the un-modified version), and sends a message of faith and optimism. I highly recommend it.

A few months ago I was on the bare Hill of Allen, "wide Almhuin of Leinster," where Finn and the Fianna lived, according to the stories, although there are no earthen mounds there like those that mark the sites of old buildings on so many hills. A hot sun beat down upon flowering gorse and flowerless heather; and on every side except the east, where there were green trees and distant hills, one saw a level horizon and brown boglands with a few green places and here and there the glitter of water.

Gods and Fighting Men, by Lady Gregory

About the Author Isabella Augusta, Lady Gregory (15 March 1852 – 22 May 1932), born Isabella Augusta Persse, was an Irish dramatist, folklorist and theatre manager. With William Butler Yeats and Edward Martyn, she co-founded the Irish Literary Theatre and the Abbey Theatre, and wrote numerous short works for both companies. Lady Gregory produced a number of books of retellings of stories taken from Irish mythology. Born into a class that identified closely with British rule, her conversion to cultural nationalism, as evidenced by her writings, was emblematic of many of the political struggles to occur in Ireland during her lifetime.

49 of 50 people found the following review helpful. This is THE actual Book of Irish Mythology By Amazon Customer Gods and Fighting Men is an excellent resource because it preserves the lore from the Book of Invasions as well as other sources -- the legends of the earliest inhabitants of Ireland, the coming of the Tuatha De Danaan (The People of Dana) and the stories of Finn MacCumhail. What is portrayed as "Early Irish Mythology" 99% of the time actually isn't -- the dozens of translations of The Tain, albeit worthy reading, are actually the lore of Ulster, a single Irish province. This makes it Ulster Mythology (regional) more than Irish Mythology (national). The legends of the Tuatha De Danaan are essential for a comprehensive understanding of Irish mythology, actually comprising the majority of the Mythological Cycle, and deal with the initial settling of all of Ireland. Unfortunately, it seems to be modern New Age reconstructions of the Mythological Cycle rather than the native stories that seem to be infusing themselves into the mainstream, and that is sad. In my mind, the Mythological Cycle is the most important cycle in Irish mythology, because it sets up the scenario for all that is to follow. The Fenian Cycle (legends of Finn MacCumhail and his warband) are fascinating not only for their strong associations with Nature, but also for the fact that the stories are well-known both in Ireland and in the Scottish Highlands. The Gods still walked and resided on (or in) the Earth and interacted often with mortals. Magic was all around. The Tain, on the other hand, is more a time of towns and forts and war-chariots; a time when magic was less present and people were less intertwined with Nature than in the Golden Age. The Gods had already departed our realm and only made brief cameos in the stories. In summary, Gods and Fighting Men is the actual collection of Irish Mythology from the earliest legends. It affects all of Ireland and the stories are fairly widespread throughout the Gaelic world. Lady Gregory wrote these translations with a view to retain the native Irish sense of story-telling; this she achieved remarkably well. My one concern is that it would have been nice for Lady Gregory to have cited her sources for each story. I know that in many cases she blended versions from several sources to produce what she saw as the purest form of the story, but a simple listing of these would have been fantastic from an academic standpoint. Overall this is probably the greatest collection of Irish Mythology I have found so far, albeit Lady Gregory's focus was primarily as storyteller rather than academic (this is not a bad thing -- dry, stale translations of Irish lore would have been extremely anti-Irish in themselves). This should probably be the FIRST book one reads of Irish Mythology. I highly recommend this book and the fact that it is value-priced definitely doesn't hurt, either. This book is definitely worth several times its cost. Happy Reading!

Irish Myths brought to Life By willwood@sympatico.ca The works of Lady Gregory are the best way to get a pure taste of the original Irish Myths - unless you are fluent in Gaelic and can get a hold of older copies. Lady Gregory's elequent speech and style breathes life into Ireland's forgotten Heroes and Gods!

By David Stabler Lady Gregory faithfully renders old Irish stories into a form that we clods that only speak English can understand. She does not, however, make them more prosaic, or fix them into what we normally find as our story format! They are true to the original structures of the genre, and are much more lively and fun for that. My wife places them firmly in the nature of Irish legend, which she calls "We went over there and stole their cow!" (Tain Bo Cuailnge is basically a story of a cow theft, and is one of the most famous stories of Irish legend). I love the split style, and it does give the reader a good understanding of the way stories were related in the old days. A must for those who want to know where some of the ancient Irish names derive!

The Voyage of a Lifetime on the Great Trade Routes This book is a guide to the planning and booking of a journey on a cargo ship. On these types of ships there are no casinos, dancing-girls or musical entertainers. There is only one restaurant and the wine list is short. If you need diversions like these to enjoy yourself, then this book isn’t for you. Instead:

  • If you’ve been carrying inside yourself for a long time the dream to travel by sea...
  • If you have the dream of a different kind of passage away from the mundane tourist trail...
  • If you have in you the desire for genuine adventure and escape...
  • If you want to live an adventure you'll never forget...
This is your ticket. Booking a journey on a cargo ship is complicated. Travel agents are not interested to help you because they have low profit margins and shipping companies don't advertise this kind of voyage. You must go to an agent specializing in this kind of booking. Nobody will help you: you have to pick the route, prepare the boarding documents, obtain medical certificates and so on. Thanks to my experience and mistakes, I have been able to define some simple steps, thus enabling you to travel on a cargo ship. Even if you don’t have any money put aside. Even if you are lacking knowledge of where to start gathering information and the necessary documents. These are all procedures I have followed for my voyages. It’s a tried and tested method. And it works. If you follow the steps described in this book you will be able to leave within a year, with only slight modifications to your current lifestyle. Each chapter of this book will clearly explain what to do. How to set your budget, find the money for the trip, which shipping companies to contact, which documents you need and how to obtain them. Life on a cargo ship is described, including interviews with people who have experienced it. You will find advices on how to cope if you are vegetarian, vegan or have specific food intolerances. Start packing now and be ready for the Voyage of a Lifetime.

An exciting travel guide for those who want something really different By Ciaran Nagle This book opened my eyes to a type of modern travel that I never knew existed. Federico Lepri describes slow-paced cruises, interesting company, top quality food, wine at the captain's table and a view of the world that even millionaires never get to see.Cargo ships are built with a number of large cabins for important guests. There's no point in these going empty so shipping companies make them available to travelers. If you know how to find them. This is a real 'how to do it' treasure for those who want to get off the beaten track on a voyage between continents. No boring beaches here. Just a re-connection with nature, people and a form of seafaring that's been going on longer than history.
