I'm reading her books as research for another book in which she is a character, so it is interesting to use her books as a means of finding her real character.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Tom Grogan By Bomojaz This is a delightful, old-fashioned novel set along the waterfront of NYC in the 1890s. Tom Grogan is a stevedore, and when he suddenly dies, his wife, Mary, hides the knowledge of her husband's death and takes over the operation of his business (and becomes the "Tom" of the story). She is a tough little cookie, and it's wonderful to see the way she fights the politicians and unions to keep her husband's business afloat (some of the tactics used against her are pretty nasty, including blackmail and attempted murder). But she's a good-natured soul and a most appealing character in the love she harbors for her dead husband, and the care and attention she shows her children. The ending, where Mary wins the legal right to use her husband's name for running the business, is well done. A very entertaining read, great for the summer hammock or just whiling away a couple of hours.

By Snake It is hard for a person to read this book without realizing what terrible crimes were committed by supposedly upstanding people to black people throughout this country. This book details what racial atrocities happened In this country's past. Does prejudice ever really stop though. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Non-Fiction as it should be By Meks Librarian A work of non-fiction first published in 1912, “Rough Stone Monuments and Their Builders” gives an overview of what was the state of knowledge on the subject at that time.Thomas Eric Peet (1882 - 1934) goes about his topic in a systematic manner, starting by clarifying the meaning and differences of the various megalithic buildings such as dolmen, menhir, cromlech, allée couverte and many more. He presents the various types of monuments by country or region without neglecting the assumed time frames during which they were built and used. Also, he explains why certain assumptions were made, and presents arguments for and against differing theories regarding the origin and purpose of each type. Last but not least, he writes about the builders themselves – what kind of people were they, how did they live and work together, why did they make such enormous efforts. In all this, he never fails to caution the reader that almost nothing can be proved with absolute certainty, but nearly everything is based on conjecture. He cites the work of colleagues and predecessors and gives a long list for further reading. The book Is richly illustrated and nicely divided into chapters – in short, a very good example of non-fiction, understandable for the interested non-scientist but not beneath the professional reader.Nowadays we have so many computer-aided methods in archaeology; it is not difficult anymore to date a certain structure and to connect findings from one place with others. But still, If you think about it, a lot of it is guesswork and conjecture – as long as a people has not left behind any written testimony of their times and lives, we can never be entirely sure of our “facts” to be true (and even then they can be questionable. For example, in medieval times it was common practice to greatly exaggerate the number of soldiers and ships a ruler commanded, which makes it necessary to treat documents about battles with caution).About the author: Wikipedia does not say much about him as a person, but from the dry dates one can assume that he did lead a life dedicated to science, namely Egyptology.

Twelve Years a Slave (1853) is a memoir and slave narrative by American Solomon Northup as told to and edited by David Wilson. Northup, a black man who was born free in New York state, details his being tricked to go to Washington, D.C., where he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South. After having been kept in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana by various masters, Northup was able to write to friends and family in New York, who in turn secured his release with the aid of the state. Northup's account provides extensive details on the slave markets in Washington, D.C. and New Orleans, and describes at length cotton and sugar cultivation and slave treatment on major plantations in Louisiana. The work was published eight years before the Civil War by Derby & Miller of Auburn, New York, soon after Harriet Beecher Stowe's best-selling novel about slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), to which it lent factual support. Northup's book, dedicated to Stowe, sold 30,000 copies, making it a bestseller in its own right.

Whether it's the seat that's always saved for the local Old Boy, the decor that looks like it's been bought in a job lot from the 'heavy dark red fabric' shop, or the quiz team who insist on calling themselves 'Norfolk in Chance' for the hundredth time, British pubs follow a set of bizarre and baffling rules that are second nature to most pub fans but confuse the hell out of tourists. Former "GQ" editor and pub aficionado Daniel Ford casts a light on these hidden rules and answers such questions as: Do all real ale drinkers have to sport beards? Why has every country pub had at least one king, queen or ghost stay there? Is half a shandy ever an acceptable drink? Why shouldn't you stand in the middle space of an empty pub urinal? If you win three quid in the quiz machine, why are you expected to buy a round for everyone in the pub? And, most importantly, just why shouldn't you touch the nuts?!

A quick and amiable guide to pub etiquette By George Robinson If you are planning a trip to the UK anytime soon and expect to do some serious boozing, this brief introduction to pub behavior will be useful. Despite his serious journalistic credentials, author Ford plays the subject for fairly easy laughs. That's not to say it's not funny -- it definitely is -- but a lot of the material is drawn from the b-list. Still, this is a breezy and generally informative guide, with a few slyly delivered sociological insights tucked away amidst the guffaws.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Romantic! By Hello Happy Romeo and Juliet is retold in this picture “book” in succinct and charming fashion. Painted in a lovely folk-art style by Yelena Brysenkova, the famous story of woe is retold, of fair Juliet and her dear Romeo. I think it would be perfect for fans of Shakespeare’s play and children or all ages, the book features 14 panels each, all painted on 39-inch by 9-inch cardstock, folded accordian-style, in a nice, thin case. Each panel includes a summary, and a famous quote, along with each painting. I find that it works beautifully as a book, or as home decor, unfolded and displayed across a mantle-piece, dresser, or console table.

Miss Katherine Wayneworth Jones was bunkered. Having been bunkered many times in the past, and knowing that she would be bunkered upon many occasions in the future, Miss Jones was not disposed to take a tragic view of the situation. The little white ball was all too secure down there in the sand; as she had played her first nine, and at least paid her respects to the game, she could now scale the hazard and curl herself into a comfortable position. It was a seductively lazy spring day, the very day for making arm-chairs of one's hazards. And let it be set down in the beginning that Miss Jones was more given to a comfortable place than to a tragic view.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Nomadic Yoga Odyssey By Hammock Bliss I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Nomadic Yoga Odyssey. I first began my own yoga journey in Goa many years ago and it was so much fun to read about George’s personal journey of yoga discovery which echoed my own. The Goa of 2015 is in many ways different but in essence the same as the Goa of old. I loved reading about George’s experiences with so many different schools of yoga from Iyengar to Ashtanga to Yin to Tantra. It was really thrilling to experience vicariously so much yogic variety. The concurrent story of George & Elisa meeting in a yoga course and then slowly falling in love was lovely. I also found George’s obsession with food quite endearing as he recounts almost exactly what he ate and at most every meal. Overall A Nomadic Yoga Odyssey is a strangely hypnotic read. I found myself drawn to my ipad wondering what yogic adventure was next, when Elisa would return and what exactly was on the menu for dinner. Thank you George for sharing your yoga odyssey with us in such a delightful and delicious way.

If you are interested in learning more about yoga and its different schools, then Rajna's book will prove to be a superb introduction. Much of the action in the book occurs in Arambol, Goa and the author's descriptions of the town, its 'hotspots' and quirky residents will make any India aficionado relish this book! Absolutely recommended!

Situated on the Atlantic Flyway, Duck was given its name by the first postmaster, Lloyd Toler, who operated a tiny store in the community. While Duck is the Outer Banks newest town, officially established in 2002, it has a long and interesting history, one that has always focused on fishing. Duck was once a quiet little village, with both able-bodied men and women actively engaged in maritime activities. Located on a narrow strip of land between Currituck Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, the town has a thriving commercial district, and visitors enjoy the boardwalk along the sound, six miles of pristine beaches, and a town park. Duck showcases the evolution of this community, from a small fishing village to a popular resort destination on the North Carolina coast.

Transforming Student Travel calls for a paradigm shift in the student tour industry: educators collaborating to create a student-centered, inquiry-based tour. Marcel Proust said, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” This resource guide explores ways educators can encourage students not only to see with “new eyes,” but also to understand how they know. The International Baccalaureate informs the first part of the book which includes educational research as well as practical suggestions for improving the tour experience, including an integration of academic subjects. Although much has been written about the impact of international travel, this book explores ways educators can transform domestic tours for public and parochial school students. The second part of the book offers resource guides for four cities – Washington, D.C.; New York; Philadelphia; and Boston. Teachers, tour directors, and tour operators, will find discussion questions activities as well as detailed background information for four of the most visited cities by students. Many of the questions and strategies can be adapted for other landscapes.

Transforming Student Travel: A Resource Guide for Educators, by Faye Brenner

Review "In 'Transforming Student Travel,' Brenner proposes thought provoking ideas to help educators and leaders plan life-changing educational experiences for students through the wonderful world of travel." (Elly DeVries, publisher, Student Group Tour magazine and studentgrouptour.com)The techniques expressed in the book parallel many of the concepts in the International Tour Management Institute training but in a different language. The more diverse ways we learn to communicate and share knowledge through critical thinking and dialog with others, the better we are able to understand other’s perspective and viewpoints of the world. A teacher or tour guide that gets people to question and think about what they see, hear, smell or touch, is truly a master of their art. Helping people see the world through different eyes, is part of the journey to a more peaceful planet. (Ted Bravos, president, CEO, and co-founder, International Tour Management Institute)Transforming Student Travel thoughtfully brings together educational theory and practical tips in an easily readable format. Brenner's approach is sure to deepen student learning on any trip. Extremely useful for any tour guide or teacher. If you care about students getting the most out of their travel experience, this book is for you! (Tracy S. Michaud Stutzman, PhD, Tourism and Hospitality Degree Program, University of Southern Maine)Faye Brenner’s book on transforming the art of guiding students from merely giving them facts about history, people and monuments will allow them “see with new eyes” the rich heritage that is ours. Whether you are exploring close to home or venturing far away to another country, Ms Brenner’s ideas for the adventure of learning by immersing your experience to truly understand, is a thrilling way to awaken young minds. Her practical advice is easy to incorporate into any curriculum or itinerary. (Heidi Watson, Certified Master Guide and Chairperson of training, Guild of Professional Tour a guides of Washington, D.C.)Travel will teach students to think critically about the world around them when Brenner’s techniques are modeled by the teacher and the tour director. Students will return home with far more than photos and souvenirs when the trip includes critical thinking exercises and inquiry based discussions about the sites they visit. Brenner weaves the two worlds of the classroom and student travel experiences together into an exceptional model for meaningful student travel. (Carol Kendrick, former State President of Arizona Middle Level Association and member of the Board of Trustees for the Association for Middle Level Education (formerly the National Middle School Association), administrator, teacher, and ITMI certified tour director)

About the Author Faye Brenner fulfilled her dream of becoming a tour director after two previous careers in formal and informal education, as a teacher and a summer camp director. She credits the International Baccalaureate program for teaching her how to think and how to teach.

By K Goy I am a retired teacher and professional tour guide, with 30 years of teaching and student travel experience who has worked with Faye Brenner and large groups of middle and high school students. Student travel is TOUGH. Keeping them engaged and learning is a challenge. Faye’s book will help you with this challenge, whether you are new to teaching and guiding or experienced. Get ready with your highlighters and posit flags because there is plenty you will want to mark and use when you are out in the field with students. For me, Faye Brenner’s book is a great new source of good ideas and new ways of reaching and engaging students who are traveling with me as their guide. I love the ways she seeks student engagement through questioning; why do you think that, why did you like it, what else did you see, why do you think they put it here, how did make you feel. In her book Faye also shows how to approach a site, she shows how to get students to look at the whole, even (stare), but then she directs them to go deeper, look from different perspectives, look at the parts; pick a quote that moves them, think about why a memorial was created… “it is written in stone…look for it.” Another technique she gives, is getting students to take a moment and sit, look, reflect and think. These are not necessarily activities that students do on their own as they are busy running back and forth, taking selfies, talking to their friends without really looking or thinking. Faye’s book gives the experienced travel leaders new ideas but she also gives those people new to this challenge a great resource for successful group travel experiences. I highly recommend this book to Tourist Guides, Teachers and anyone who is leading students on the great adventure of learning about new places and people. Enjoy!

Faye's approach to enhancing the student travel experience is original and thought provoking. I look forward to putting these new tools into practice in the future.

Transforming Student Travel is Transformative By helga warren Faye Brenner has written an invaluable guide for anyone who travels with students: tour leaders, teachers, tour guides, even parents who want to make family travel to the major East Coast cities (Washington, DC, New York, Philadelphia, Boston) a truly educational experience for their children. She challenges students to form a deeper understanding of the historical sites they visit and to think critically about their experiences at every turn. Best of all were the concrete examples of questions to ask and consider at major sightseeing venues. An excellent jumping-off point for your next student trip!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Food For Thought By Meks Librarian "The Portion of Labor" by Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman was first published in 1901 and deals with the life of factory workers in a small industrial New England town and their struggle for decent living conditions and fair wages.Up until now, I had not known anything about the author, but while reading this book, more than once I thought that some of her ideas about women's stand in society must have come across as revolutionary in those days. Her own life, as Wikipedia tells me, was strongly restricted by her very religious parents when she was young, but she received a college education (by no means the average thing to do for an average girl back then), worked as a secretary and married comparatively late, at the age of 50.Not having lead the "typical" life of a woman of her times herself, it is hardly surprising that Freeman's story features quite a few untypical ladies; women who, through hard work, hard thinking and hard decisions make the best they can of their lives and for those they love and care about. When Ellen Brewster is eight years old, she runs away from home, frightened by an argument between her parents and her aunt. It is cold and dark outside, and when the exceptionally pretty girl is found by a rich, childless lady, said lady takes her into her house with the intention of keeping her. A few days later, the child, wanting her mother more than anything, now that the novelty of the adventure has worn off, escapes and returns home. All her life, Ellen never tells anyone where she has been, showing a stubborness and firmness of character that will cause her both trouble and joy as she gets older.Growing up, the girl proves to be a bright student, and her parents, humble people who have managed to build up a modest life for themselves with the hard-earned money from one of the shoe factories, desperately wish for her to get further education and not end up working at the factory. At first, it looks as if their plans might come about against all odds, with help from an unexpected source. But soon, things take a turn for the worse, when the Brewster family is hitting hard times with Ellen's father out of work, her aunt needing medical attention and no improvement of conditions in sight. So, Ellen does indeed end up working at the factory - but she is different from the other girls there, in that she actually enjoys the feeling of satisfaction work gives her.Of course, there is also a love story - actually, more than one - in the book; politics play a role in that there is an ongoing conflict between the workers, the union and the factory owner, and Ellen herself plays a crucial role in it. Several people lose their lives and things look very dire before an unusually harsh winter ends and spring does not only bring renewal for nature, but also hope for the hearts and minds of the story's heroes.I much enjoyed this book, although I must admit it has its lengths. But the language is beautiful, and the characters and places described well. Ellen's way of thinking is credible to me; even when she is a child, I can relate to the way she thinks, because it is how children do think. The conditions of life for factory workers were far from easy back then, although much better than what they probably were some decades earlier: work started at 7.00, there was an hour's lunch break from 12.00 to 1.00 pm, and the whistle blew for work ending at 6.00 pm. Wages differed according to the task one had, and the number of pieces completed. Being out of work meant automatically being out of money; no such thing as unemployment money or any insurance to fall back on. It pretty much sounds like what is reality for millions of people all over the world - think factory workers in China, or those who work in textile factories in India and Bangladesh, where the hours are probably longer than in 1901 in New England, and conditions worse. The book gave me a lot to think about, and an insight into a world that, while it is firmly put in the past for many of us, is still present reality for way too many people.

On they came, from Belgium and New Hampshire, from Ireland, Germany and Scandinavia, from the Chicago fire, from the territories: Utah, Wyoming, Kansas, the Dakotas. All the way they brawled, about Indians, about border lines, about slavery, about who was the bigger imbecile. And then they fought County Seat Wars in most of the 3,000 new counties. A thousand of those remaining ended up in south central Nebraska, scrapping about Harlan County and which still-imagined town should hold the seat of government.

From the Author INTRODUCTION The dirtiest deal in my home county happened when settlers near the tiny town of Alma snagged the Harlan County seat in the late 1800s. A native of that Nebraska county seat, I didn't find the affair that scuzzy, but descendants of the nearby town of Orleans still do.Mention the county seat there and faces redden and glower, voices snarl and snap. Indeed, Orleans's descendants seem to think that locating the county seat in Alma was Harlan County's worst calamity, more unfortunate than the 1935 Republican River flood that killed 110 people, destroyed 11,400 head of cattle, and wiped out trees, houses, barns, bridges, and railroad tracks. "At least," they say, "we recovered from the flood," but not the Harlan County seat fight, still taking its toll in Orleans. What in the world happened in early Harlan County, I wondered, to create a fury that burned for generations? What took place between 1871 when forty-two settlers voted to make Alma City the county seat and 1884 when the Nebraska Supreme Court settled the inevitable disputes?A few trips to Alma and Orleans libraries, I felt sure, would satisfy my curiosity. Was I wrong! Trying to discover what happened during those thirteen years felt like struggling to solve a huge jigsaw puzzle riddled with missing pieces. No single account described the entire conflict. Speeches, letters, interviews with old timers, and reprints from early newspapers contradicted one another or dealt with isolated aspects of the quarrel. Even legal records, including county commissioners' journals and district court records, were incomplete. As I searched, I realized that the Harlan County fight was far from unique. All over the Midwest at this time, the creation of counties and the locating of county seats turned into bitter dogfights. Small wonder at the zeal in these little towns. Securing a county seat brought more than prestige to a community. It brought a government payroll and rapid growth generated by private businesses that sprang up to profit from the traffic created by governmental activities. Speculation alone could generate amazing amounts of money. A railroad might even stop in the lucky community. The town that lost, by contrast, often died out. In county seat fights, no second-place prize existed. This made many of these contests rancorous, even violent. I also noticed, as I researched, that the Harlan County contenders had plenty of models of thieves, rascals, and sore losers. Everything Harlan County citizens did--lying, cheating, stealing records, stuffing ballot boxes, building courthouses--also happened in other county fights. Plus the state, the territory, and the national Congress of that time provided Harlan County residents with plenty of examples of dirty deals. A Senator pulls a pistol in Congress to shut up a speaker. An acting governor deals out counties like playing cards. The army sets the partially settled prairie ablaze. Territorial Senators stupidly repeal all of Nebraska's laws. Indians kill white folk and white folk massacre Indians. Voters burn a Senator in effigy. The United States entertains Indian chiefs in Washington, the better to intimidate them. These stories seem endless.Such patterns of behavior must have enabled Harlan County settlers to justify their friction. These familiar tales must have led settlers to believe that, in Nebraska, a person could get away with as much as he dared. I also discovered, while researching, that little is known about most Harlan County settlers. I have listed the names of the early settlers in a detailed section at the end of the book--not to assign blame but to chronicle once and for all the first players in this ongoing battle, from whom many readers of this book may have descended. However, a great deal is known (or can be deduced) about two settlers: William Parker Carr who settled near Alma and Victor Vifquain who left Harlan County in disgust.Of third generation New England stock, Carr, a visionary, laid eyes on the paradise that would become Harlan County while it was still Indian land. What he saw persuaded Thomas Harlan and his settlers from Wyoming to come stake claims in the Alma area.Vifquain, an immigrant from French-speaking Belgium who became a Civil War hero, led the first settlers--forty men--to what would be Harlan County. They chose claims in today's Orleans area months before Thomas Harlan and his men scouted the land.In the first two parts, I introduce you to these two men and explore what drew them to the area that became Harlan County. The next two parts, Unscrupulous Models and Taming the Wild Tribes, describe the Nebraska worlds these two men found when they arrived. Unscrupulous Models focuses on the national, territorial, and state governments whose actions brought, eventually, Harlan County into being. The Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Sioux who lived along the Republican River paid an awesome price for trying to stay on their land in the face of the intruding white culture. Taming the Wild Tribes describes those fights, necessary before folks dared settle near the Republican River. In the last section, Harlan County's Bitter Birth, I tell you--here for the first time--the entire story of what happened between 1871 and 1884 in Harlan County, Nebraska. You'll learn why Tom Harlan stole county minutes, why the Reverend John Whiting hid election returns, how young, strong Joel Piper stole the records back, and what set the county seat on wheels. From my book, you can understand why these early settlers scrapped so. You may even see why the righteous indignation that trickled down through the years has a certain logic. Won't you journey with me through this strange and often amazing world?

About the Author Hi! Just so you know, my books and poems are either nice--or naughty. My nice books are histories of the truly amazing Great Plains, including the Orphan Trains and county seat wars. Sex rears its head in my naughty works. Plus I think I should tell you that I'm a personal writer. I don't write much that doesn't have an intimate feeling to it, that isn't centered, in some way, on my history. My life began in Alma, a tiny town in south central Nebraska, where I was born and raised. As I lay in bed, listening to my mother read me to sleep, I fell in love with words. Mom read oodles of books to me. My favorite was "The Farm Twins" by Lucy Fitch Perkins. When I turned eleven years old, I decided to be a writer. At twenty-one, I graduated from the University of Nebraska with a journalism degree. Then I read Jack Kerouac's "On the Road." Struck with the travel bug, I set out, saw Denver, New Orleans, San Diego, Portland, and New York. I lived in New York City for thirty years, where I taught writing at Pratt Institute, and earned a degree in creative writing from Brooklyn College. Now I'm back in Nebraska, located in Omaha. I'm a retired professor doing what I love best: writing full time. When I'm not pounding away at my computer, I can usually be found reading, pulling weeds, talking to my cat, or hanging out with my partner, Jack Loscutoff, also a writer. I have become an award winning and internationally published writer of poetry and prose who has written six books, six hundred poems, and hundreds of articles and stories. My awards include a national Pushcart Prize for my poem called "Pricksong," a Master Alumnus award for distinction in writing from the University of Nebraska, and the National Orphan Train Complex's Special President's Award for my biography, Mail-Order Kid. My "naughty" book, Marcella, is the first novel written in English that uses autoeroticism as its main theme. My writing has appeared in Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, India, and Japan.

The title says it all. M. Coffey revisits Nebraska in the 1800's with colorful prose and memorable characters. Her light touch sets humor against the facts and makes for informative, entertaining reading.

Evans Impressed with the amount of research that had to have gone into this and that Ms. Coffey has so skillfully distilled into clear, well-written stories that bring to life the frontier life in Nebraska, the personal and political struggles for land and power. Present day life here in Omaha seems tame compared to the days of busting sod, cheating and fighting the Indian tribes and vyeing for county seats. When horses broke legs on wild terrain instead of cars busting axles in potholes. This is a clear-eyed, unsentimental account of those days when European settlers brought their dreams to this new land but needed to displace the Indians in order to do it. And then they squabbled over how to run things after they settled in. (Okay, that still sounds like present day Nebraska.) I enjoyed Ms.Coffey's wit and humor describing all these thieves, rascals and sore losers.

Firestone You wouldn't think a history of the settling of Harlan County, Nebraska would be all that interesting unless you came from Harlan County, Nebraska. Think again. Coffey tells some lurid tales of dirty politics, dirty deeds, and dirty tricks with relish and humor. What makes it all especially poignant is that I found more than a few that remind me of the shenanigans going on in Kansas right now.
