The major commanding looked up from the morning report and surveyed the post adjutant with something of perturbation, if not annoyance, in his grim, gray eyes. For the fourth time that week had Lieutenant Field requested permission to be absent for several hours. The major knew just why the junior wished to go and where. The major knew just why he wished him not to go, but saw fit to name almost any other than the real reason when, with a certain awkward hesitancy he began: "W—ell, is the post return ready?" "It will be, sir, in abundant time," was the prompt reply. "You know they sent it back for correction last month," hazarded the commander. "And you know, sir, the error was not mine," was the instant rejoinder, so quick, sharp and positive as to carry it at a bound to the verge of disrespect, and the keen, blue eyes of the young soldier gazed, frank and fearless, into the heavily ambushed grays of the veteran in the chair. It made the latter wince and stir uneasily. "If there's one thing I hate, Field, it is to have my papers sent back by some whipsnapper of a clerk, inviting attention to this or that error, and I expect my adjutant to see to it that they don't." "Your adjutant does see to it, sir. I'm willing to bet a month's pay fewer errors have been found in the papers of Fort Frayne than any post in the Department of the Platte. General Williams told you as much when you were in Omaha."

About the Author Frederic Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in depictions of cowboys, Indians, and the US Cavalry of the American West in the late 1800s. Love of adventure and the great outdoors, especially in the West, were the bonds that sealed the friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and Frederic Remington. "I wish I were with you out among the sage brush, the great brittle cottonwoods, and the sharply-channeled barren buttes," Roosevelt wrote to the western artist in 1897 from Washington. In 1888, Century Magazine published a series of articles about the West written by Roosevelt and illustrated by Remington.

Wonderful input of intrigue and conspiracy with a modest hint of the anticipation of romance. I would say after reading this book that Capt Charles King might have pulled some of his narratives from personal experiences or observations while in the military in the late 1800's.

Patrick Henry Jones's obituary vowed that "his memory shall not fade among men." Yet in little more than a century, history has largely forgotten Jones's considerable accomplishments in the Civil War and the Gilded Age that followed. In this masterful biography, Mark H. Dunkelman resurrects Jones's story and restores him to his rightful standing as an exceptional military officer and influential politician of nineteenth-century America. Patrick Henry Jones (1830-1900), a poor Irish immigrant, began his career in journalism before gaining admittance to the New York bar. When the Civil War erupted in 1861, Jones volunteered for service in the Union Army. He rose steadily through the ranks of the 37th New York, became general of the 154th New York, and eventually attained the rank of brigadier general. Jones was one of only twelve native Irishmen ever to attain that rank in the federal forces. When the war ended, Jones's reputation as a military hero gave him an entry into politics under the mentorship of editor Horace Greeley and politician Reuben E. Fenton. He served in both elective and appointed offices in the state of New York, navigating the corruptions, scandals, and political upheavals of the Golden Age. Ultimately, his entanglement with one of the most sensational crimes of his era-a high-profile grave-robbing from the cemetery of St. Mark's Church-tainted his name and ruined his once-respectable career. In the first full-length biographical account of this important figure, Patrick Henry Jones tells the quintessentially American story of an immigrant who overcame both his humble origins and the rampant xenophobia of mid-nineteenth-century America to achieve a level of prominence equaled by few of his peers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Fascinating Biography on a Lesser Known Individual By Matthew Bartlett When it comes to the overall demographic of the Union Army, there are many stories of immigrants which come to mind. The most prominent group of immigrants in the Civil War which get attention are the Irish, but the story of Patrick Henry Jones is largely ignored in the annals of the war. Now, thanks to Mark H. Dunkelman, there is a full fledged biography on the man who has such an interesting history, is makes me wonder why it took so long to get a book written about him. Mark H. Dunkelman is an accomplished author of the American Civil War. Some of his works include Brothers One and All: Espirit de Corps in a Civil War Regiment, War’s Relentless Hand: Twelve Tales of Civil War Soldiers; and Marching with Sherman: Through Georgia and the Carolinas wih the 154th New York. Dunkelman is most famously known for his work on Amos Humiston, Gettysburg’s Unknown Soldier, in his work Gettysburg’s Unknown Soldier: The Life, Death, and Celebrity of Amos Humiston. This work is part of Conflicting Worlds, a series of books printed by the Louisiana State University Press which prides itself on printing some of the most excellent works on the American Civil War. When speaking to others about famous Irishmen during the war, Patrick Henry Jones is not the first name to come up in conversations which I’ve had with people, but it will now. What I found most fascinating about this man’s life before the Civil War was his attachment to the Democratic Party, but his disgust with them over the secessionist movement led him to serve in the Union army. Dunkelman’s writing about his time in the Civil War really speaks to people as a man who entered as a private and rose the ranks throughout his time. Dunkelman also gives us a human narrative which is greatly appreciated in a biography on man such as Jones. Overall, the incredible stories about Jones throughout his narrative give way for many more discussions about him then there have been. But the stories and life experiences about this man grow even more after the war when he became a politician. While the end of his life had some sad moments, I felt that this biography was quite excellent and Dunkelman should be praised for bringing us the story of a man whom we hardly knew. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the people of the American Civil War. While you may have never heard of Patrick Henry Jones, I found this work to be enthralling and a welcome addition to the biographies of the war. The narrative is amazing, which is something I’ve known of Mr. Dunkelman’s work, and he treats his subject as a human instead of a god. So many times we pay attention to the larger people but these works are a reminder that it was not only Grant and Sherman who fought the war for the Union. Another fine work by Mr. Dunkelman, Patrick Henry Jones is one of those biographies that I will be talking about for years to come.Matthew Bartlett - Gettysburg Chronicle

The realities of politics during that period are probably best told by this type of biography By John Sarver “Patrick Henry Jones” tells the story of an Irish-American from Western New York who was successful as an officer during the Civil War and as a politician in New York after the War. The realities of politics during that period are probably best told by this type of biography. Ethnic and party rivalries make this an interesting story.

Excerpt from Travels in Russia, the Krimea, the Caucasus, and Georgia, Vol. 1 of 2A year ago, when I published "The Character of the Russians, and A Detailed History of Moscow," I expressed the deepest solicitude with respect to the reception of that work by the British public, whose character and opinion I shall ever venerate. I also stated, that by its judgment I must decide, whether or not I should continue my literary labours. Encouraged by the kind reception of that volume, I soon afterwards published, "An Account of the Organization, Administration, and Present State of the Military Colonies in Russia," a pamphlet which met with general notice.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Siddhartha, by Hermann Hesse

Review "No living English-speaking actor outshines Derek Jacobi, nor any audiobook reader for that matter. He sings, rather than speaks, with extraordinary lyricism, expressiveness and depth...Jacobi approached the text with a direct, childlike fervor. He brings home the subtleties of Siddhartha's inner journey with amazing clarity and resonance, which he makes more exciting than the most thrilling thriller." --AudioFile, October/November 1998

I have read "Siddhartha" by one translator or another every year starting in 1978 (it is now 2014). I try to find new translations hoping that it will stimulate my reading of the book. In recent years, there have been many. This one, however, as other reviewers has stated, has so many typos that it difficult to read - especially if this is your first try. Do NOT read this translation first. The New Directions translation, the only one available for many years, is not exactly in modern English, but it beats the heck out of this version.I DO, however, strongly recommend reading a decent version of the novel. One of Hesse's best (and I've read them all).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. DO NOT BUY By Connor This is an absolutely terrible translation of a great book. This edition is so badly riddled with typos and illogical translations that I couldn't read more than a few pages. It would be easier to just learn German and read the original than to actually finish reading this translation.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Eastern Lighthouse for the Lost Westerner By Firecat Hat My name is Firecat Hat. As a writer, I love to read great writer’s works. And this book is definitely one I enjoyed. ‘Siddhartha’ is a deeply eastern philosophical story written by a westerner with a keen perception, and almost uncanny awareness, of not only eastern thinking, but depth of life itself. Sometimes the insights he has really impress me. He is aware of abstract concepts of life that few people in our modern world ever talk about. ‘Siddhartha’ is a remarkably insightful book by a remarkably insightful writer. The lessons about life that this book has to offer are deep – lessons one would be very lucky to hear from some aged and helpful older person, good enough to share with us. The man is a guru. The tragedy of the story, I believe, centers around Govinda, around that character’s separation from Siddhartha. Whether the separation from him is actually necessary for the two of them to advance on their roads through life is, I think, a subject for interesting debate. But Hesse shows that they separate, and indeed that it is necessary for the blossoming of their characters. One can’t help but feel sorry for Govinda. And I noticed something in this book worth remarking. While Hesse is brilliant philosophically, he does not bleed the emotional parts of the story to their maximum effect. That is, he never gets the reader to ‘feel’ the story on an emotional level. (He never made me cry). But, I must say that this also makes us feel the story’s emotion even better. Sometimes by not emphasizing the emotional tones, the reader is made to feel them – underlying as they are – even stronger. Overall, this is a philosophy book almost unparalleled as such in the novel world. It shows us the journey of life, with masterful language that is very reader-friendly, cover to cover. It has the potential to be, in fact, life changing. And it stands with the classics, tall and deep. It stands like the Sequoia trees: tall for all to see, living on and on – timeless. And one last point worth remarking. The book’s main point is something profound, and that I agree with. Happiness can not be pointed out precisely to one by anyone else. ‘Each entered the forest adventurous at a point that he himself had chosen, where it was darkest, and there was no way or path.’F I R E C A T H A TMay 18, 2011

Camping or backpacking in winter is appealing for many who enjoy the serenity of wilderness settings without the crowds and bustle of the summer season. But as rewarding as they can be, these outings require special preparation and a different set of skills than are necessary at other times of the year. Snowfall can quickly cover one's tracks and make orientation difficult. Hypothermia is insidious, and rapidly changing weather conditions can become treacherous, even life-threatening.

In addition to those who are exploring the outdoors recreationally, there are also those who find themselves in unexpected winter survival situations. Each year, people become stranded in wilderness areas, and in most cases they are not equipped to face the challenge of spending an indefinite amount of time outside. Without sufficient gear or knowledge of how to improvise without it, injury or death is often the result. The development of some basic skills, however, can help avert such unfortunate outcomes.

As the founder of the renowned nature awareness program Primitive Pursuits, Dave Hall has been practicing survival skills for more than twenty years and has amassed a comprehensive understanding of winter survival. By refining these skills, Dave has reached a point of understanding that is without peer. Through detailed explanations, illustrations, and personal anecdotes, Winter in the Wilderness imparts Dave's knowledge to readers, who will learn to meet their most basic needs: making fire, creating shelter, obtaining safe drinking water, navigating terrain, and procuring sustenance.

Winter in the Wilderness is a handbook for those who want to explore cold-weather camping and those who might find themselves in need of this critical information during an unexpected winter’s night out. Whether used for pleasure or for survival, Winter in the Wilderness emphasizes the benefits of enriching and deepening our connection with the outdoors.

Outstanding Book That Prepares You For Winter Survival By Francis Tapon Before sharing my thoughts of this book, I'll share my background and experience to illustrate my expertise, ignorance, and bias.I've spent many weeks backpacking in the winter or in winter-like conditions. For example, when I did a round-trip on the Continental Divide Trail, I walked across Colorado in May. When you're in the Rocky Mountains in May, it sure looks and feels like winter, even though officially it's spring. The mountains are buried in snow and freezing temperatures are the norm.My most memorable winter trip was a 4-day backpacking trip in Yosemite during Thanksgiving (late November).I've also climbed many snowy peaks, such as nearly all the peaks in Cascade Mountain Range (e.g., Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, Mt. Baker, Mt. Adams, etc...), as well as snowy mountains outside the USA, such as Mont Blanc.Despite all these situations, I have only once been in a true winter survival situation. That was in late March 2006 when Maiu and I got lost in the Olympic National Park. We almost died. We spent two nights (one of which snowed on us) in a diabolical ravine. We both ended up with frostbite, but we got out on our own.Another close call was when I was snowshoeing in Idaho for the day with Julia, my Ukrainian girlfriend at the time. We got lost as the sunset and kept walking until we ran into a man running a snowplow at 3:00 a.m. We were walking the wrong way and he took us to back to safety. Therefore, it was with great interest that I read Winter in the Wilderness. Here are the pros, cons, and verdict of the book. What the Winter in the Wilderness coversWinter in the Wilderness is a 216-page book that is broken up into seven sections and four useful appendices. The seven sections are:1. Priorities2. Fire3. Shelter4. Water5. Sustenance6. Helpful Crafts and Skills7. Navigation and OrienteeringThe four appendices are:1. Motor Vehicle Considerations (where you're told what to do if you're stuck in your car in a remote place in the winter)2. Survival Kits3. Winter Gear Checklist4. Suggested ReadingStrengths of Winter in the WildernessThe appendix, especially the survival kits and winter gear checklist are extremely useful. Many illustrations, which are useful to visualize how to make a snow cave or how to set a snare. It gives you all the basic and intermediate things you need to know to survive in the wilderness.Weaknesses of Winter in the Wilderness- The cover stinks. Yes, I'm being superficial, but the cover looks like a self-published nightmare, not something done by Cornell University.- Although the illustrations are useful, they are the same quality as Tom Brown's classic book, Field Guide to Wilderness Survival. Brown's book was written before the era of desktop computing and computer graphic illustration. I would have preferred superior graphics and/or photos. Usually, I could see what they're trying to show me, but sometimes a better graphic would have helped.- His experience is mostly in New York state. Although talks about situations where you might not find abundant trees or animals, the information is minimal.- It's not super comprehensive. At 216 pages, you can't expect it to cover all the possible edible plants in the world, for example.Who should buy Winter in the Wilderness?- Novices and intermediate backpackers.- Anyone who fears freezing to death in the woods.- Most mountaineers - because you never know when you'll blow off the mountain.- Preppers who want to survive the nuclear winter.Who should NOT buy Winter in the Wilderness?- Advanced backpackers who have spent significant time in the woods probably won't learn much in this 216-page book.VERDICTMost survival guides tell you to stay put when you're in trouble. Conventional wisdom says that the biggest mistake people make is trying to walk out. However, I've always walked out because I sensed that safety wasn't that far away. Indeed, in the USA, it's hard to be more than 50 km (35 miles) from a road. And I always felt strong enough to just keep walking. Had I stayed, I would have to depend on someone saving my ass. Moreover, you tend to weaken with each passing day as the cold and low calories take their toll. Moreover, finding someone in the wilderness is hard, especially if you're off-trail, which is often where you are when you're lost. I'd rather not be stuck there for days or weeks. Staying put and making a shelter isn't always the best solution.Still, this book does an excellent job at teaching how to survive for days, even in the frigid wilderness.FOR MORE INFO: I interview the author on my website

Lord Hall’s primer on finding/making fire, shelter, water, food, and the rudiments of orienteering/navigation and other Neat Tricks (e.g., making moccasins or a digging stick, etc.) is pretty frigging awesome. It takes readers through the very basics of whatever skill is at hand. To make fire, for example, you have three choices—the bow drill, the two-person cord drill, and the hand drill. Variations generally go on to demonstrate more sophisticated ways of accomplishing the task. Note that “sophisticated” doesn’t always mean easy, or pretty. The chapter on “Sustenance,” for example, notes that “[f]oraging in winter is a…difficult task, but with practice you can identify wild edible plants and trap animals.” The food itself isn’t the Four Seasons (plants like hackberry and acorns will basically help you not to starve) and trapping game, even with a simple deadfall, will most likely take a whole long time to perfect. And it won’t cook itself! With skills like this guide can teach you, forget about your audition for Naked and Afraid. They know you’ll come back too well rested and having gained some muscle. VERDICT Awesome stuff, like Boy Scouts 2.0, that will backdate your “primitive” skill set about 50 years and prepare you very well for survival in the cold and/or disasters of all sorts. If you can master this stuff—and what the hell, it’s actually fun to try—you’ll be the dude sleeping in the backyard snow cave every winter there’s enough snow to do it. Copyright Library Journal.

By Amazon Customer I have spent much time in the Adirondacks in upstate New York and did not know how little I actually knew about wilderness survival until I read this detailed book! It has now become my "go to" gift for my daughter, off exploring the Green Mountains of Vermont. Thanks for a fantastic guide!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Waste of money!! By Kelsey Duke Save your couple dollars and do a little Internet research for free. This book doesn't offer anything more than that. It's 5% a scattered thought process of what the author enjoys doing at the holidays at WDW but without much practical advice or tips. The other 95% is menus of every. single. restaurant. on Disney property. Straight up going to the Disney website is just as helpful and that's free. I understand that the author loves Disney and probably really does want to help others enjoy his passion, but this book was a miss. Sorry.

A riveting story of World War II from the losing side. A young woman and her tiny Sudetenland German community grapple with survival in the period encompassing the world wars but find the apocalyptic peace that follows the Nazi defeat even more ruinous. In this history-infused narrative, overwhelming events sweep up young Maria Hajek and her beleaguered ethnic German village, climaxing in the annexation of the Sudetenland by Nazi Germany. As Adolf Hitler’s motorcade passes Maria’s home in 1938, she believes her life will improve under the new political arrangement that cleaved her homeland from oppressive Czechoslovakia. However, the Nazis soon launch World War II and deepen the misery. Before long nearly every working age man under 50 is in uniform, leaving Maria and the other women to work the farms, cope with shortages, and attend ever more soldier funerals. In time the plight of the village soldiers, as described by men Maria knew, grows desperate as they fight on the collapsing Eastern Front and at Normandy. At the war’s end, Maria can’t imagine the worst is yet to come. She finds peace brings only occupation and savage treatment at the hands of the Red Army and Czech partisans. The violence leaves Maria with a lifelong secret and culminates in a traumatic expulsion to a broken Germany. A companion volume will relate the story of the author’s father, a man who by guile and luck survived the Eastern Front, the Allied onslaught on Germany, and American bombs when very few others in his German Panzergrenadier division did. Like his wife-to-be, he emerged from the war bearing a secret.

About the Author Born in Germany but reared on an Iowa farm, Erich gave up tractors to obtain a degree in biology, tour South Vietnam on helicopters and armored personnel carriers, and earn a PhD in immunology. Shortly after a research position brought him to the Pacific Northwest from Southern California, he began to spend more time away from the lab and acquired a greater interest in exploring hiking trails and his family history than esoteric aspects of the immune response. A subsequent journalism degree, the stories he’d collected from his parents and others, and multiple trips to Europe in pursuit of interviews, records, and history propelled him to piece together the nonfiction narrative he found himself charged with. When not writing, Erich spends time with his grandsons, coaches vision-impaired athletes in the sport of goalball, plays bocce, travels abroad, and still pounds out a few miles hiking the mountains and deserts of the great American West.

The author’s prolific skills as a writer allow the different storylines to weave together into a compelling and profoundly poignant narrative: a perfect symbiosis between the affective and the informative.A must read for everybody interested in personal and contemporary history, in a European-American story and a potential catalyst for one’s own inherited and/or collective war memories.

Growing up in America, you rarely learn much about the average German's experience during the World Wars. The author tackles this challenge blending historical narrative with personal anecdotes to great effect. Framing the story with what was happening on the world stage helps anchor the reader while the on-the-ground telling of his mother's experiences adds an engrossing (and at times, tragic) personal touch. This book added another chapter to my understanding of the immense human tragedy of those conflicts. Highly recommended.

Blessed to be American By Amazon Customer This book was incredibly well researched and well written though I am sure it was a tough story for Erich to share. I had no idea how absolutely horrible life was for the German people during the war and especially for Maria. This book made me realize how truly blessed I am to have been born in the USA and how easy my life has been. I knew Maria - she always seemed to be happy and content - I had no idea she had suffered so much. She was an amazing woman!

I have found this book to be very interesting and the author paints a good picture of the troubles facing the American pioneers. He paints the picture of the life he and his family endured. A very good read in my opinion. Historically enlightening but still personal.
