When she moved from Scotland to America, Aefa Mulholland had never gone to a Highland Games, spoken Scottish Gaelic or played golf. Or worn a kilt or feather bonnet. Or thought about swapping the grumpy old tabby for a Scottie dog, gone Nessie-spotting or played bagpipes. Or done so many things so often expected of Scots overseas. Growing up in Glasgow was entertaining, but her antics and outfits tended not to feature tartan or have a bagpipe soundtrack. Aefa's Scotland was grittier. It was down-to-earth. It threw pizzas into deep-fat fryers. And she never felt it lacking… until now, 20 years later, when she realises that she's been away so long that her Scottishness is fading. She sets out immediately to shore up her Scottishness, facing her fear of bagpipes and dread of organised social dancing as she travels from Florida to Washington State, New York City to Honolulu, meeting the kind, the compelling and the kooky characters that inhabit America. She struggles through a Gaelic immersion weekend on a ranch full of cats in Texas, attempts Scottish country dancing in Honolulu, plays golf on a rattlesnake-infested sand course in Arizona and is bemused by proliferations of cloaks and dragon puppets at her first Highland Games in Oregon. She visits Chicago’s Scottish Retirement Home to learn secrets of 'The Scottish Way,' has tea with Hawaii’s freshly elected Scot of the Year and is as confused as the passing New Yorkers by the Tartan Day parade. She catches caber tosses, Scotch tastings and sheepdog demonstrations from the Pacific to the Mississippi, tries to claim Elvis for the Scots and finds herself deep in backwoods Georgia with a hundred Scottie dogs. Everywhere she goes, she is met with warmth and kindness—and by puzzled Americans, confused as to why a Scottish-born Scot can’t recognise her clan colours or muster even a 'Good Morning' in Gaelic. From the early days of the quest till its final steps, Aefa explores what it means to be Scottish, what it means to be Scottish-American and what it means to be at home so far away from home.

Review "Very funny and entertaining... Too many books about Scotland as po-faced and serious as my own are craving attention. [The Scottish Ambassador] will amuse readers of every political stripe and will be popular with both Scots patriots and their critics." Alasdair Gray, author of Lanark. "Welcome to the USA - the United Scots of America - as chronicled by [Aefa Mulholland], a Glasgow-born author who has spent four years documenting the good, the bad and the crazy subcultures of our expats across the pond," Scotland's Daily Record.

Lester I was recently in Dunedin, Fl., and spied a placard for upcoming Highland Games, and giggled to myself thinking of Aefa Mulholland's affable and fun book The Scottish Ambassador. Ms. Mulholland, who is from Glasgow, rediscovered her Scottishness by touring many of the Highland games in the United States with caber-tossing, hammer-throwing, kilt-and-tartan wearing Americans of Scottish descent. Ironically or possibly sensibly, Ms. Mulholland did not grow up with the activities and accoutrements that we here in the U.S. assign to Scotland: "I never had any interest in tartans or Highland Games, Gaelic and golf. They just weren't any part of my life growing up in Scotland." She goes on to describe how her sister did pursue "Scotland's more post-card-popular pursuits." Her stops in her pilgrimage include Portland, Ore., Savannah, Ga., Chicago, Memphis, New York City, New Orleans, and even Honolulu. Mulholland also delves deeply into the Scottish roots in this country: "I really hadn't known the scope of Scotland's influence on America today. Never mind that nearly half of the signatories of the US Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent. Forget that cultural forces from Donald Trump to Eminem are of Scottish blood..." Well, ahem! We will forgive them for that. Mulholland's exquisite wit is strongly on display throughout the book. Be prepared to giggle lavishly. After being dubbed with Scottish stereotypes from a Chicago taxi driver upon hearing her accent, she says simply: "I experience a moment's pure hatred for Mel Gibson." There is nothing better than an outsider's view of our country from an insider's point of view. "The Scottish Ambassador: Learning How To Be Scottish in America" is a delightful read. Look for the wee horse on the cover.

Aefa Mulholland is a fresh and charming addition to the travel writing genre. Her lively wit is matched by her willingness to do just about anything to "learn to be Scottish", despite being a proud Glaswegian! I have laughed out loud on public transit reading about Aefa's shenanigans and consistently gift it to friends as something to brighten up their days. Highly recommended!

Marie's Read By Marie Shirley Griffin Reading/Allen's Shopping This book of short stories was written at the turn of the century- electricity and phones were available, but cars were not much in use. Some of the prose is unusual for us, but so worthwhile to read. While this book never mentions Christ, Christians will see the amazing love that the people in many of these stories show. It's a difficult book to explain, but one that will likely change you, if you allow it to - please give it a chance.

Eleanor Parker had just graduated from college when she hopped on a train and traveled across the country to work for a summer at the Horseshoe Inn in Rocky Mountain National Park. She wrote home almost every day, and these letters and Eleanor's journal are the basis of this lively account of the young adventurer's summer that was filled with moonlight horseback rides, dancing in the casinos, visiting other lodges, and hiking to waterfalls. Includes photographs and maps of Eleanor's hikes and rides, many to the long-gone historic park lodges and all to landmarks and sights familiar to today's park visitors.

When a simple accident is misinterpreted and threatens Elizabeth Bennet's reputation, her fate seems sealed as Fitzwilliam Darcy's wife. While the bride is resigned, the gentleman could hardly be happier until betrayals and schemes threaten to entirely take the matter out of their hands. Overcoming the plots before them will take all the patience, perseverance and collaboration they can muster, but a partnership requires truth. Self-discovery and trust await Jane Austen's most beloved and willfully blind couple as they attempt to master their own destiny in life and love.

No Cause to Repine: A Pride and Prejudice Variation, by Rose Fairbanks, a Lady

From the Author "No Cause to Repine is a splendidly romantic and enjoyable tale! I greatly enjoyed how Ms. Fairbanks invented such a thoughtful premise and developed such perceptive and characters! I definitely recommend this variation to readers who enjoy seeing Darcy and Elizabeth in forced situations and love witnessing a gradual growth of consideration, understanding, and love."--Austenesque Reviews"The story line is fresh without taking our favorite characters on an impossible journey. The writing is superb! And the teaser at the end leaves me wanting the next "what-if" to be here sooner than summer! I feel the author knows these characters very well. As another JAFF reader, I find it hard to believe she has only written 4 books! The depth of character seems like she has "sat with these people" for much longer!Highly recommend this one!!"--The Ardent Reader

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Wish it were better but the plot has huge holes By SnowyOwl I so disliked this book, I requested a refund from Amazon. So yes, I paid the full Kindle price, although all of the current five star reviews are by readers who received a free copy in exchange for their review.I love JAFF and have read many P&P variations. This one was not a horribly written book in the sense that the writer writes dialogue well, and has good pacing of the story, but No Cause to Repine had some of the worst plot holes and plot development of any I can recall. The start of the book was good, and held strong potential for a good read; however as the story unfolded I was more and more incredulous. Some specifics of the issue I had with the book (warning: SPOILERS AHEAD!):There is no way that once Darcy knew that Lady Catherine orchestrated Wickham's attempted elopement with Georgiana that he would not have raised righteous hell with his Aunt Catherine; particularly as he also found out at that same time that Lady Catherine was plotting to have Wickham ruin one of the Bennett girls. He would not have stayed passive to let WIckham carry on with his plot. Darcy is a man of action, not one who is going to step back and allow Wickham of all people hold him hostage, while everyone does nothing but WAIT around for Wickham to attempt to seduce one of the Bennetts? That’s truly unbelievable. Made more so, than even with this ridiculous response, that he would then LEAVE Hertfordshire, leaving Elizabeth and her sisters exposed to Wickham for weeks on end, trusting only Mr. Bennett to protect them? It goes too far against Darcy’s character to believe he would allow himself to be put into the role of a passive victim to anyone, most particularly Wickham. And one of the impetuses for the entire plot is that Lady Catherine is the master manipulator of the scheme for Wickham and Georgiana to elope. For all of Lady Catherine’s conniving and manipulation, even in the original P&P, one of her constant characteristics is her snobbery. There is no way in the world I will ever believe that she would have her niece elope with Mr. Wickham, or to be put into any type of compromising situation with a servant’s son. Wickham is a steward’s son and therefore not a member of the gentry, but a son of a valued servant. Additionally, the resulting scandal of Miss Darcy eloping with the steward’s son would taint the entire family, the family she is so desperate to marry her daughter into. And even if she then schemed to have Darcy arrive to discover their plan to elope, the possibility of scandal is too great. Simply not plausible.I could go on, but what I’ll say for the book is that Ms. Fairbank's writing style and construction of dialogue is good, it was truly terrible plotting that destroyed this one for me.

21 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Great fun, with insider jokes aplenty By Sheila McLean No Cause to Repine by Rose Fairbanks4.5 starsLike, no doubt, many of those who may be attracted to this book, I've read Jane Austen's novels many times, as well as my fair share of Jane Austen fan fiction/alternate universe works. A whole industry has sprung up reinterpreting Miss Austen's works, and I'm in the thick of those who like to read those reimaginings. Some are very well done, entertaining and thought-provoking. Others? Well, not really. This book stands among those that are well done.Through a complete accident, Mr. Darcy finds himself having compromised Miss Elizabeth Bennet during a fateful one-on-one meeting at Hunsford Parsonage. Things are not as they seem when Mr. and Mrs. Collins and Miss Lucas walk in, but it looks bad. Darcy, being who he is, immediately offers marriage, though he is not displeased at the prospect because he is in love with Elizabeth and supposes she feels the same about him. Elizabeth, recognizing that there really is no viable alternative, accepts his proposal despite the fact that she cannot abide the man.And away we go. As you can imagine, the hijinks of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, the obstinate refusal of Mr. Bennet to accept the situation, and the lurking threat of Mr. Wickham all come to bear on the resulting happenings. The author develops the characters well and consistently within their established personalities - something which I appreciate. I will also give the author credit for not completely clinging to established canon in her cast - I enjoy seeing new interpretations of the P&P universe when written well, and this one is. Toward the end of the book it seemed the pacing got faster and faster, almost as if an overzealous editor had done a bit of slash and burn to shorten the novel; Lady Catherine's capitulation seemed too rushed to be completely believable, and Mr. Wickham is more of a shadow puppet than an actual character in this book - but these are fairly minor quibbles. Where Ms. Fairbanks really shines is in the development of the relationship between our hero and heroine, which was fresh and sincere in a genre that's spent a lot of time reconciling these two people over and over again. The author has worked in many recognizable phrases from the Austen novel which serve as a wink and nudge to those of us who delight in these. She also used the book's title, or bits of it, more than once and in a few cases it feels as if she tried too hard to make the use relevant. The book has a few typos and one apparent word misuse, but these are easily overlooked when the story is entertaining - and this one definitely is. I solidly recommend this to any Janeite who enjoys an alternate telling - this is a well-written path not travelled.Full disclosure: I was given an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review, and this is my honest review. I will always call them as I see them.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I can't believe the number of readers that gave this book a 5. I give it a 2. By ms This book started off well, with an amusing plot twist that forced Elizabeth to accept Mr. Darcy's marriage proposal, but it lost my interest halfway through the book, and that almost NEVER happens. Too much angst on the part of Lizzy & Darcy, plus huge holes in the plot. The characters' actions just didn't make sense. I couldn't believe how bad it was, with so many ratings of 5 from readers. It's getting to the point that I can't rely on Amazon ratings at all. Very discouraging. I want a refund.

The surprise Chinese invasion of Vietnam in 1979 shocked the international community. The two communist nations had seemed firm political and cultural allies, but the twenty-nine-day border war imposed heavy casualties, ruined urban and agricultural infrastructure, leveled three Vietnamese cities, and catalyzed a decadelong conflict. In this groundbreaking book, Xiaoming Zhang traces the roots of the conflict to the historic relationship between the peoples of China and Vietnam, the ongoing Sino-Soviet dispute, and Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's desire to modernize his country. Deng's perceptions of the Soviet Union, combined with his plans for economic and military reform, shaped China's strategic vision. Drawing on newly declassified Chinese documents and memoirs by senior military and civilian figures, Zhang takes readers into the heart of Beijing's decision-making process and illustrates the war's importance for understanding the modern Chinese military, as well as China's role in the Asian-Pacific world today.

Deng Xiaoping's Long War: The Military Conflict between China and Vietnam, 1979-1991 (The New Cold War History), by Xiaoming Zhang

Review The definitive work on the subject...Well-researched and clearly-written study fills a gap in our knowledge about China's preparation and execution of the Third Indochina War.---H-Diplo[A] skillful study. . . . Reminds readers of the reasons why fundamental distrust persists on both sides.--Foreign Affairs[A] superb example of history writing at its best . . . [and] one of the best explanations of China's current strategic approach to military action.--Choice

Review The little-studied Chinese invasion of Vietnam in 1979 and the decade of hostility that followed constitute a critical watershed in Asian history, with a close and outwardly convincing alliance between the two countries against the Americans before the conflict and growing distrust and enmity afterward. Zhang's comprehensive and accessible study is notable in particular for the skill with which it analyzes both halves of the situation: locating the tensions already present during the alliance and then demonstrating how post-Vietnam War Chinese hostility issued as much from global concerns--about the Soviet Union, for example--as from immediate military causes.--Arthur Waldron, University of PennsylvaniaThis is the most comprehensive and well-researched study yet published of Chinese decision making--both diplomatic and on the battlefield--during the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War and the ensuing ten-year conflict. Offering new insights culled from a wide range of never-before-utilized Chinese-language primary documents, Zhang's argument is unique and valuable, and it deserves wide circulation within the scholarly community.--Robert Ross, Boston College

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Historical Read By Michael Y. Hooper I believe Xiaoming Zhang’s “Deng Xiaoping’s Long War” is the premier example of how a book on the military conflict between China and Viet Nam 1979-1991 should be researched and written. Professor Zhang undoubtedly spent much time and personal effort gathering facts for this detailed account of that historic conflict between two communist nations. The book is chock full of accounts of military action on both sides. It’s a must read for those who wish to understand the reasons for Deng Xiaoping’s action against Viet Nam’s intervention in Cambodia and Russia’s support for its military aggression there.

Excerpt from Mont Pelee and the Tragedy of Martinique: A Study of the Great Catastrophes of 1902, With Observations and Experiences in the FieldIn presenting to his readers the following pages dealing with one of the most noteworthy, even if lamentable, incidents in the world's history, the author feels that he must do so with the apology that the work is only partly done. The magnitude of the phenomena that are associated with the Pelee eruptions, and the obscurity in which many of the facts pertaining thereto still remain, will necessitate further research before the episode can be made fully known in all its relations, and probably some of the conclusions here set forth will have to be modified in the light of future investigations. But the history as it stands may be considered measurably complete, and it has the advantage, at least, of being based largely upon personal observation. The author's two visits to Martinique were made after an interval of three months, in the latter part of May and again in August, and during these times he enjoyed unusual opportunities for the prosecution of his work. The pleasing courtesies of the people of Martinique helped largely to whatever of success was obtained, and contributed a degree of comfort in labor the absence of which would have been sorely trying.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At a time when women’s roles were sharply defined by their spheres – the home and the care for their children, which they dutifully presented to their husbands upon marriage – Kate Chopin explored the life and mind of a woman who wanted more. Set in Louisiana, The Awakening contains many elements of style and setting which would later emerge as the trademarks of more famous writers, like Hemingway and Faulkner. Chopin’s The Awakening is also among the first works of feminist literature, as it treats her protagonist’s struggle against the mores of her time with seriousness, consideration and insight

PDF Ebook Online All Canada in the Hands of the British: General Jeffery Amherst and the 1760 Campaign to Conquer New France (Campaigns and Commanders Series), by Douglas R. Cubbison

In 1760, General Jeffery Amherst led the British campaign that captured Montreal and began the end of French colonial rule in North America. All Canada in the Hands of the British is a detailed account of Amherst’s successful military strategy and soldiers’ experiences on both sides.Newly promoted general Jeffery Amherst took command of British forces in North America in 1759 and soon secured victories at Fort Duquesne, Louisbourg, Quebec, Fort Ticonderoga, and Niagara. In 1760 William Pitt, head of the British government, commanded Amherst to eliminate French rule in Canada. During the ensuing campaign, Amherst confronted French resurgence at Quebec and mounted sieges at Isle aux Noix and Fort Lévis, both of which were made difficult by French strategic placements on nearby islands. As historian Douglas R. Cubbison demonstrates, however, Amherst was well before his time in strategy and tactics, and his forces crushed French resistance. In this first book-length study of Amherst’s campaign, Cubbison examines the three principal columns that Amherst’s army comprised, only one of which was under his direct command. Cubbison argues that Amherst’s success against the French relied on his employment of command, control, communications, and intelligence. Cubbison also shows how well Brigadier General James Murray’s use of what is today called population-centric counterinsurgency corresponded with Amherst’s strategic oversight and victory.Using archival materials, archaeological evidence, and the firsthand accounts of junior provincial soldiers, Cubbison takes us from the eighteenth-century antagonisms between the British and French in the New World through the Seven Years’ War, to the final siege and its historic significance for colonial Canada. In one of the most decisive victories of the Seven Years’ War, Amherst was able, after a mere four weeks, to claim all of Canada. All Canada in the Hands of the British will change how military historians and enthusiasts understand the nature of British colonial battle strategy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Well done By Historian I'd actually give the book 4.5 stars if I could. This is a readable, straightforward story of the British campaign to take Montreal in 1760. Most books stop at Quebec and imply that after the 1759 battle the war in New France was over. That was not the case, as Cubbison shows. Some good maps (1more would have been helpful but no biggie) and very interesting first person quotes about the campaign. Highly recommended for all those interested in 18th century warfare, the F&I War in particular.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Three roads to Montreal... By HMS Warspite Most histories of the French and Indian War tend to wrap up with British General Wolfe's iconic victory on the Plains of Abraham outside the walls of Quebec in 1759. In fact, the war had another difficult year to go, and the outcome was by no means assured. "All Canada in the Hands of the British" is Douglas Cubbison's overlooked history of the 1760 campaign that ended the French and Indian War.Cubbison comes to the conflict with a background as a historian of modern combat; some of his terminology is borrowed from the present. His narrative captures in detail the challenge to British General Jeffrey Amherst of coordinating the convergence of three military columns on the last French stronghold at Montreal. One column started in Quebec, where Brigadier Murray took charge of Wolfe's troops, first to hold Quebec against a French counterstroke, then to carry the war up the St. Laurence River to the gates of Montreal. A second column started at Crown Point in what is now upstate New York, as British Colonel Haviland led a mixed force of regulars and provincial units up a string of lakes and rivers to the St Laurence. The main column was led by Amherst in person, starting from Fort Oswego on Lake Ontario. This is a good campaign narrative. The author has done his homework with respect to primary and secondary sources. The perspective sometimes borrows a bit from the present, and is ocassionally repetitive. However, the analysis is solid and worthwhile, including consideration of what the French might have done to stave off defeat. This reviewer highly recommends the book to both the general reader and the student of the conflict.

Its contributions to the world are great, namely the parliamentary system which is the backbone of governance in almost all the countries. Roman army was world's first army which was paid a salary. Its contributions in other areas area also remarkable such as Architecture, music, arts, science. The book though short provided an overview of the roman empire, its rise and fall, different dynasties and other aspects. Good Read! I would love to see detailed analysis of their systems, governance and social system in the upcoming books.

I loved how it's sort of the "readers digest" version of all the contributions made to the world by the Roman Empire. This book offers all of the most important information regarding the Roman Empire, how it started, all the way down to its finality. It gives all pertinent points, as well as some extra information to where you feel much more educated in the topic by the time you finish. For me, I don't enjoy a bunch of unnecessary information, this book isn't loosely written with a lot of impertinent reading. Everything it has to offer is relevant, and everything you need to know. I highly recommend it!

King Vortigern the usurper sat upon his throne in London, when, suddenly, upon a certain day, ran in a breathless messenger, and cried aloud— “Arise, Lord King, for the enemy is come; even Ambrosius and Uther, upon whose throne thou sittest—and full twenty thousand with them—and they have sworn by a great oath, Lord, to slay thee, ere this year be done; and even now they march towards thee as the north wind of winter for bitterness and haste.”

In this book you meet them all - including the magician Merlin, and the brave knights Sir Launcelot, Sir Gareth, Sir Tristam, Sir Bors, Sir Kay, and Sir Galahad. All the old favorites are included - Arthur drawing the sword out of the stone, Arthur receiving the sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake, and Arthur's marriage to Guinevere. But this is just the beginning of excitement - followed by numerous quests and adventures of the knights, including the Quest for the Holy Grail. This book is chock-full of entertaining adventures involving knights in shining armour, damsels in distress, fierce jousting and sword fights to the death, battles against hoards of enemies and giants, tournaments and miracles. The medieval setting is painted in a rather idealized fashion, limited to the nobility and figures of the court, who embrace all that is beautiful, brave and noble. These virtues are sometimes portrayed rather simplistically, as unknown knights engage in mortal combat, and only after they have virtually killed each other do the introductions begin: "What is your name?" Behind this medieval mayhem is a heightened sense of chivalry more reflective of legend than fact, where knights battle to the death for the sake of a woman - even one they have only just met. But isn't that what the Arthurian legends are all about? Nobody is under the illusion that they are to be taken too seriously. Journeying to Arthur's Camelot is a form of escapism - suspend your sense of disbelief, watch the flashing swords and fearful battles, and enjoy. That's not to say that the Arthurian tales do not reflect any reality. Arthur's world is in many respects a real medieval world. Medieval beliefs in paganism and Christianity are evident throughout. Witchcraft and enchantment is presented as alive and deadly, and conversely the true religion - in this case the beliefs of the medieval Catholic church - is evident throughout as knights commend themselves to God in prayer, thank him for his help, and even repent from their sins. The whole notion of the Holy Grail is of course a very Christian tradition - although a tradition that represents more fiction than fact. And the moral virtues of justice, truth and right for which the honorable knights fight are still noble ideals of virtue today. Arthur's kingdom is presented as a kingdom blessed by the grace of God, a beacon of light symbolizing all that is good and true and right, and a worthy model for kingdoms in today's world because it revolves around timeless virtues. Tales that promote dignity, courtesy, courage, respect for right, respect for female dignity and purity are as ennobling as they are entertaining. How much truth there is behind the Arthurian tales will always be the subject of debate. The fact remains that there is an extensive and confusing body of legend to wade through. In this work, Green has essentially followed Malory's fifteenth century classic "Morte d'Arthur." But unlike most other writers, such as Sir James Knowles, Green has made some significant improvements:1. Firstly, the traditional Arthurian tales are a confusing mass of legends. But Green consciously weaves all the tales together as part of a single pattern. He needs to take some liberties with legend in order to achieve this, but these alterations are minor, and the end result is a plausible reconstruction with a clear development, revolving around the establishment of Arthur's kingdom, its climax with the successful quest for the Holy Grail, and subsequent downfall.2. Secondly, most other collections slavishly follow the body of legend inherited by Thomas Malory. Green follows Malory in the main, but has researched the legends carefully for himself, and also incorporates some Arthurian legends not found in Malory. These innovations of Green result in a very readable and successful version of the Arthurian tales, and yet one that does not significantly sacrifice faithfulness to legend. Those looking for a more historical reflection of the Arthurian tales would do well to turn to a version of Malory, such as that by Sir James Knowles. And those looking for a more developed and extensive modern version where the author has taken liberties beyond the original legends, would enjoy the classic work by Howard Pyle. But as a faithful, plausible and enjoyable introduction to the tales, you can't go wrong with this superb effort by Green. Most readers looking to be introduced to the Arthurian legends need look no further than this collection by Green. It's not as grand as Malory, but it's a better read. There is no end to the accomplishments of sword and sorcery, adventures and quests. To our sorrow, Arthur's kingdom ends in darkness and disgrace, but not before it has shone with a wonderful and memorable light. Along with the tales of Robin Hood, the tales of King Arthur are the most exciting tales that British history has produced. This is the stuff of legend, and it's worth a read.

Not the version I would suggest By TS It's curious to me that this is the best-selling version of the King Arthur story in the kindle store, because it's a singularly flawed collection, well-eclipsed by other variants that are also available for free online; I suspect its popularity is an artifact of the search engine, not the book's own merits. The author, Sir James Knowles, was an architect and friend of Tennyson, best known for founding the Metaphysical Society; this is, therefore, a very Victorian Arthur. In this case, "victorian" means "bowdlerized to the point of inanity." The story of Merlin's enchantment of Uther and Igraine to arrange Arthur's conception is almost completely elided ("When Uther, therefore, was at length happily wedded" -- yep, that's the whole story); Sir Tristram is apparently completely chaste with Iseult (King Mark just doesn't like him for some indiscernible reason) and even when Lancelot and Guinevere are caught together and the entire course of the story turns on adultery, such that bowdlerization was completely impossible, Gawain suggests that "it may well be that Lancelot was in her chamber for no evil." The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is simply not included at all.I suppose that kind of bowdlerization might be acceptable in a children's version of the Arthur stories, but this edition isn't good for that either, for two reasons: 1) like many free kindle ebooks, all illustrations have been removed, and 2) it's a kindle edition, and who gives a $250 ebook reader to a child too young to read a story with adultery in it?There are other problems also. The King of Gaul (Sir Bors) is an ally for the first third and last third of the book, but in the middle, Gaul has a different king, Flollo, and Arthur conquers Gaul six ways from Sunday (mostly as a stopover in his conquest of Rome); timelines don't add up; so on, so forth. I didn't feel the author did a good job of telling the Arthur legends, in any particular. In short, this is a bad version of the King Arthur story and the general reader would be better off not wasting time on it.I'm sure people are going to say "hey, it's an early victorian version, don't hold it to such high standards," but there's no reason for a modern reader to read these, any more than there's reason to read Sir Thomas Bowdler's "Family Shakespeare". For more "historical" versions of the Arthur legend, either of this versions' main source materials -- Geoffrey of Monmouth's _History of the Kings of Britain_ or Sir Thomas Malory's _Morte D'Arthur_ -- are superior reads (though I'll admit you'd want to skim Monmouth heavily). My own personal favorite, Howard Pyle's three-book version of the Arthur story ("The Story of King Arthur and His Knights," "The Story of the Champions of the Round Table," and "The Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur") is similarly available for free online in the public domain, can be found with excellent illustrations by Pyle himself, is written in a fashion suitable for children and adults, and does a far better job of capturing the romance of the Arthur legends. But whatever version you pick, this one is a poor place to start. It does have some strengths -- chiefly an encylopedic compilation of at least some version of almost every PG Arthur-related tale -- but the author's victorian mores seem to have twisted far too many of the stories into unrecognizability. Not recommended.

Due to this, several friends have asked me where they should begin. Over and over again, I recommend Green. His work is not majestic like Malory, but much easier to read and follow, especailly for a neophyte. Children love it, as do adults; this book gives the basic nobility of the tales, giving a good clue as to why they've been so popular for so long. Green also includes several tales of Sir Gawain, so he is not the near-felon he seems in several late medieval texts. The books is charming, moving, sad, happy, and everything else you could wish from Camelot. If you haven't read of Arthur before, begin here; if you want to remember why you loved these tales to begin with, read Green. He provides more than you would ever expect.
