Sanders I had seen a reference to Rex Beach on a documentary I watched about Alaska so found some of his work here at Amazon. The book was a quick read, held my interest, and I learned a bit about the character of Alaska in the early 1900s. The writing is a little old fashioned which only leant to its charm.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fresh Water By yonder The Silver Horde, an excellent book written by by Rex E. Beach who was born in 1877. This book has a setting in Alaska. I went to Alaska in the mid 1990's to take an examination. After the examination a friend and I who went with me enjoyed eleven different flights that took us from Anchorage to Kotzebue, Nome, south to Ketchikan and Juneau. In Anchorage there was a lady that was hired by the city to water the streets' hanging flower baskets. We visited the glaciers and saw the mountain goats on the mountain side. I thought about this visit while reading this excellent book by Rex E. Beach who has written so elaborate of the Silver Horde. He takes his time to describe the scenes and people so elegantly that I believe they actually exist, and I am able to visulalize them physically and mentally. He breathes life into the characters and not only describe them physically but also psychologically.I remember Kotzebue with the people showing us their museum with stuffed animals and clothes made from fur. There was a contest for children and a little girl won and the prize was to wear this elaborate fur coat for one year that was made form several different animals for one year. The coat was very old but it looked brand new, it was sewed with whale bone needles. Our next stop was in Nome and we stood on the shores looking for gold, of course we did not find any. We left the shores and was taken to a house where a lady greeted us with hot cider, I will never forget the graciousness of this lady on that cold day. In this house we were able to pan for gold. Next we visited Ketchikan; down below the hotel was a stream in the midst of town, salmons were on their journey to the spawning area, in fresh water their colors change to a light silvery color. There were thousands of these silver fish and they move very fast, not paying any attention to anything except making it to their spawining areas. There was a foolish young man that was going to catch a salmon but to his dismay the fish was so strong and fast that he was pulled into the stream losing his fishing gear. He left the stream wet all over and cussing. Juneau was our last stop and we flew over Canada and back to our home state.Mr. Beach decribes the area and people so well that the reader is lost in the book. The book requires the reader to advance very slow in order to enjoy every word, adjectives and similes are used abundantly in order that the reader is carried into his world. The plot starts off with action, involving two men racing through the snow where they have the misforture to end up breaking through the ice, They are rescued by a lady, and regain the use of their sled and try to find lodging. They end up with one misfortune after another. The story ends with the silver horde (salmons) coming into their traps and eventually all is well. The excitement is never ending in this book. The book is well written and tells a very decriptive story. I am sure that the author spent many hours writing the Silver Horde.SPRNewman's Own Organics Adult Dog Food Formula, 12.5-Pound BagSuncast Elevated Feeding Tray, LargeFancy Feast Gourmet Cat Food, Grilled Seafood Variety Pack, 3-Ounce Cans (Pack of 24)Bayer Advantage II Orange 4-Month Flea Control for Cats 5-9 lbs.

World travellers and armchair explores will be thrilled by Ludovico de Varthema's captivating travelogue, The Travels of Ludovico DI Varthema in Egypt, Syria, Arabia Deserta and Arabia Felix, in Persia, India, and Ethiopia, 1503 to 1508. It contains first-hand observations of pre-colonial Asia in the 16th Century, as Varthema describes the daily lives, religious rituals, eating habits, marriage rites and other cultural practices among the people he encountered. The book contains first-person observations of ancient cultures from a European's point of view. Some of Varthema's stories seem so incredible that the reader wonders about their accuracy. The translator provides helpful footnotes discussing the accuracy of Varthema's observations. The footnotes suggest sources for further reading and help the reader to make up his or her own mind about what is in the text. One controversial story involves Varthema's travels in Siam (modern Burma). Varthema's travelling companion was asked by a local man to deflower his wife, and the companion agreed. Other rituals of Tarnasarri in Siam are revealed, including the tradition which mandates widows be burned alive after their husbands die. Although the translator could not find absolute confirmation of these controversial practices, he does not dispute Varthema's veracity on the matter. Another absorbing chapter discusses Javanese cannibalism. This is exactly the kind of book which is important to preserve. Varthema's Travels provide so much more than the dry history of a textbook. Varthema was the first non-Muslim European to enter Mecca as a pilgrim and his description of the Hajj is comprehensive and richly detailed. Varthema the man is as mysterious as the cultures he visited. Almost nothing is known about the traveller outside of what is revealed by his books. Thankfully readers have his experiences to help them recreate a historical era about which little is known in the Western world.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By travel light and smiling The forgotten book society has enriched me time and again. It's fun collecting accounts of people's travels. In travelling through dar es Salaam, if seems that di Varthema at least assumed the role of Muslim convert. I had never heard of him before finding this offering, and somehow, his book remained extant over the centuries.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Insatiable Curiosity By Carol Miller Strict historical accuracy is not required of travel books, since they only portray the author's experience, yet Ludovico traveled fast and went far, even into Mecca and was the first known European to do so. He not only traveled and documented the long and winding road; he traded, as well, and so penetrated the cultures he stumbled into, glossed over, moved through and brushed against. He left no lasting mark on any of them, nor did they cause any essential transformation in himself, yet he was wise enough to look around, ask questions, and feel genuine astonishment, to accompany his almost infantile curiosity, probably the greatest trait a travel writer can possess. His experiences have been translated often and published in many languages, with exhaustive notes amounting to more than half the total text. So seen as a whole the edition does boast historical accuracy and takes itself very seriously. A book both to read and to consult.

Ethan Frome is set in the fictional New England town of Starkfield, where a visiting engineer tells the story of his encounter with Ethan Frome, a man with a history of thwarted dreams and desires. The accumulated longing of Frome ends in an ironic turn of events. The engineer, staying temporarily in town while he works nearby, is the narrator who tells the story of Frome. His initial impressions are based on his observations of Frome going about his mundane tasks in Starkfield, and something about him catches the eye and curiosity of the visitor, but no one in the town seems interested in revealing many details about the man or his history - or perhaps they are not able to. The narrator ultimately finds himself in the position of staying overnight at Frome's house in order to escape a winter storm, and from there he observes Frome and his private circumstances, which he shares and which triggers other people in town to be more forthcoming with their own knowledge and impressions.

Just made my purchase & I note that there is a CLEAR INDEX in the front; it is very easy to navigate and looks just like the side illustration (the one next to the cover pic). For 99 cents, this is a true bargain; many stories here! I'm glad to have Ms. Wharton on my Kindle; it feels just like meeting an old friend again!

By JayDee I am familiar with Edith Wharton's works so it is good to see so many stories in one book. I haven't read them in so long and it will be like reading new books all over again. For the person who said there was no table of contents - there is but you have to look for it by the same method that so many collections has it listed. The book opens at the beginning. You can either use the BACK feature to go backward and you will see the TOC, as well as all the way back and you will see the cover. OR you can go to MENU and press GO then you will see where it says COVER. Highlight that and press enter and it will open at the cover. Then use page forward to see the table of contents. Most collections work this way, but I have downloaded a couple of books where the TOC does not allow you to choose the book you want; you have to read from the beginning to the end.If you are reading the book in the software for the PC (and I assume it is the same in the MAC):The book will open at the first story. Just scroll back up to see the table of contents as well as the cover. OR click on GO up top of the screen then click on COVER.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Active TOC leads to BOOK titles, but NOT to s.s. titles By Librarian [This pertains to the H & H edition.] The TOC easily permits you to go directly to those titles which the editors have chosen to include in their TOC. While several of these happen to pertain to specific short stories, the majority of titles in the TOC are of BOOKS. However, there is no direct access to the SHORT STORIES contained within seven of those books which are compilations of such stories -- not even a listing of them so the reader can know what to search for. And there are LOTS of great stories "hidden" within them.As near as I can figure, there are 7 in "Crucial Instances," 9 in "Descent of Man," 5 in part-1 of her "Early Short Fiction," 6 in part-2 of her "Early Short Fiction," 8 in "The Greater Inclination," 7 in "The Hermit and the Wild Woman," and 10 in "Tales of Men and Ghosts," for a total of 52 short stories. But a number of these stories are duplicated (SOME reappearing -- as mentioned earlier -- as separate entities within the TOC), so the grand total is a bit lower. Some poems are also thrown into the mix, but these appear formatted as prose rather than arranged in stanzas and are uncomfortable to read. These are the reasons an otherwise five star collection gets only four. Nevertheless, at such a low price for so much great content, it's hard to complain too much.UPDATE 08-11-14: Despite my criticism above, I still greatly enjoy this particular collection and have not replaced it with any other (though Delphi has a set well worth considering).

When you’re nearly forty years old, just recovering from glandular fever and double pneumonia what better way to celebrate your recent wedding than to leave your bride behind to cycle the length of Britain. This is the account of two friends, who got drunk one night and decided to pedal nearly 1000 miles for charity, proving that you don’t need a state-of-the-art road bike, a skin-tight outfit with a TV sponsor written on the front or a made-to-measure ego – you just need a good mate, a beer mat's worth of planning, no training whatsoever and the will to do it.

During World War II, Major John J. Mohn served as Captain of the 106th Division, 422nd Infantry, 1st Battalion, HQ Company. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, along with 7,000 other men. His story is a unique journey across Europe, as prisoner camps were too full and the German officers were unsure what to do with the prisoners. Mohn was prisoner from December 19, 1944 to May 2, 1945. During these 5 months, he was forced to walk across Germany and Poland totaling 1,200 miles. He was liberated three times and twice recaptured. "He returned to civilian life...but his remarkable experiences in the military never quite left him. Eventually he put words to paper and the result is the book you have before you - one of very few accounts of this type ever to have been published. More than just a narrative of his experiences as a POW, it is a testament to the indomitable spirit of American soldiers and a reminder to all of us of the sacrifices they made to preserve our freedom." -from the Foreword by Edward P. McHugh Read this first-person account of the hardships, the terror, the survival, the humor, and the hope of a P.O.W. in Germany during the last days of World War II. Praise for Esmahan Aykol:

"Kati could be the love child of Miss Marple and NPR's Andrei Codrescu. It doesn't matter who done it. What matters is that Aykol uses the genre to tell us more about the world than we're used to."—Newsday

"An offbeat amateur sleuth with a distinctive narrative voice. Fans of Amanda Cross's Kate Fansler and Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher will find a lot to like."—Publishers Weekly

Kati owns Istanbul's only mystery book store and, as usual, gets involved in a case that is none of her business. Every day, a beautiful woman lunches alone in the restaurant next to the bookstore. When the woman is found dead in her apartment, Kati immediately recognizes the stranger from the restaurant in images in the newspaper photos. Although the police believe it was an accident, Kati suspects something more sinister has happened.

Sani Ankaraligil was an attractive young woman and a politically active ecologist in the middle of a divorce from her wealthy husband. So who would benefit from her death? The industrial companies Sani had accused of polluting the rivers of western Turkey, or her jealous husband seeking revenge through an honor killing, or a Thracian separatist group? The investigation pulls Kati into murkier waters: the marriage may have been a sham, designed to cover up Sani's husband's homosexuality . . . the role of her mother-in-law goes from distasteful to outright criminal.

Divorce Turkish Style (Kati Hirschel Murder Mystery), by Esmahan Aykol

Review ‘The heroine could be the love child of Miss Marple and NPR’s Andrei Codrescu. It doesn’t matter much who done it. What matters is that Aykol uses the genre to tell us a little more about the world than we’re used to hearing from more commercial writers.’ Newsday‘Aykol makes her English-language debut with Hotel Bosphorus her first mystery featuring Kati Hirschel, an offbeat amateur sleuth with a distinctive narrative voice. Fans of such female detectives as Amanda Cross's Kate Fansler and Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher will find a lot to like.’ Publishers Weekly‘In Aykol’s impressive second Kati Hirschel mystery Baksheesh set in Istanbul (after 2011’s Hotel Bosphorus), Kati, a German expatriate “who loves reading detective stories and has a shop specializing… once again turns amateur sleuth with aplomb.’ Publishers Weekly‘When you want to be more than a pretty wife, you may have to go above and beyond the call of duty. With characters all around her putting the pressure on her, Kati Hirschel pushes herself to keep her independence, until her interest becomes her business in more than one way. Baksheesh is a strongly recommended pick for lovers of international mystery, highly recommended.’ MBR Bookwatch

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Kati's best friend and fellow amateur gumshoe have their share of ... By Melinda The mystery aspect was mild. The search for the culprit(s) is slow and as expected enlightening. The victim was a distant acquaintance of Kati's and as she peels back the layers and inner circle of this woman's life things become very interesting as secrets and possible motives are exposed. The drawn out narrative can drag a bit, however Kati's often brash personality keeps you entertained. Fofo, Kati's best friend and fellow amateur gumshoe have their share of witty repartee allowing for plenty of chuckles. Momentum ebbs and flows, other scenarios interrupt causing minuscule subplots.Kati Herschel possesses a strong personality. At times she grates on your nerves with her jagged edges, other times her edges are smooth and you appreciate her softer side. I have a better grasp of her by the end of the book, although the road was bumpy. Once you learn of her past, concerns, and there is enough presented, you understand this fiercely independent, strong woman much better. The fact Kati is the owner of the only crime/mystery book store in Istanbul is clever. She reads so much crime she's confident she can solve local crimes of merit, and she does. Kati is so adept at sleuthing she impresses the police, in fact they quasi consult her, adding to her over abundant level of confidence.Another interesting aspect I enjoyed, seeing Turkey through Kati's eyes. Kati is an expatriate from Germany, still adjusting to Turkish ways and people despite residing in Turkey for quite some time. Interesting to learn the intricacies of Turkey along with Kati as well as her comparisons of Germany vs. Turkey.Mild mystery filled with numerous and electric characters. A few surprises along the way to solving the murder. I was off base as to the culprit, which was welcomed. Not until the very very end did all the pieces come together. Kati and Fofo will entertain you both on and off the case. Given Turkish is a difficult language to translate I found the translation strong. I still wish I could read every language to fully experience each story in their original tongue. This is the third book in a series. I have not read the previous books, however it did not deter from my reading experience. This book is fine as a standalone, although bits and pieces of the previous books are scattered throughout the narrative gleaning enough insight into previous exploits protagonist has been involved in.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Get off the beaten path By Todd I liked the book especially because it picks mostly places off the beaten path. While I have yet to visit Texas there are several places from this book that I will definitely put on my list to visit when I do. My recommendation to get five stars is to have included some pictures and perhaps a little more details on each place. I received this book at a discount in exchange for this honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Big as Texas By Debbie Denny This is a small booklet that covers some interesting Texas sites. Each destination features a little bit of history. It is very short, but does give an decent overview of each stopping-place. You might find something you have not seen before. I think a map of these locations would add a lot to the book. The websites are listed for each destination which is good.
