It takes account of much new research and modern, interdisciplinary approaches to the study and writing of history to present a broad view of late medieval society across Europe. It deals with ideas about government, social and economic change and development, the world of the spirit, as well as the history of individual countries, in many of which the powers of central government were greatly extended.

On a September day in 1877, hundreds of Sioux and soldiers at Camp Robinson crowded around a fatally injured Lakota leader. A young doctor forced his way through the crowd, only to see the victim fading before him. It was the famed Crazy Horse. From intense moments like this to encounters with such legendary western figures as Calamity Jane and Red Cloud, Valentine Trant O'Connell McGillycuddy's life (1849–1939) encapsulated key events in American history that changed the lives of Native people forever. In Valentine T. McGillycuddy: Army Surgeon, Agent to the Sioux, the first biography of the man in seventy years, award-winning author Candy Moulton explores McGillycuddy's fascinating experiences on the northern plains as topographer, cartographer, physician, and Indian agent.

Drawing on family papers, interviews, government documents, and a host of other sources, Moulton presents a colorful character—a thin, blue-eyed, cultured physician who could outdrink trail-hardened soldiers. In fresh, vivid prose, she traces McGillycuddy's work mapping out the U.S.-Canadian border; treating the wounded from the battles of the Rosebud, the Little Bighorn, and Slim Buttes; tending to Crazy Horse during his final hours; and serving as agent to the Sioux at Pine Ridge, where he clashed with Chief Red Cloud over the government's assimilation policies. Along the way, Moulton weaves in the perspective of McGillycuddy's devoted first wife, Fanny, who followed her husband west and wrote of the realities of camp life.

McGillycuddy's doctoring of Crazy Horse marked only one point of his interaction with American Indians. But those relationships were also just one aspect of his life in the West, which extended well into the twentieth century. Enhanced by more than 20 photographs, this long-overdue biography offers general readers and historians an engaging adventure story as well as insight into a period of tumultuous change.

He personally knew many of those who's names are synonymous with the old west. One can hike past his remains, set in stone at the top of South Dakota's highpoint, Harney Peak, highest point east of the Rocky Mountains in the US. He was the first white man to climb to the top.

Of Human Bondage is W. Somerset Maugham's 1915 masterpiece featuring the young Philip Carey. The work is considered autobiographical, though Maugham claims that most was "pure invention." The novel is set during the end of the 19th century, and Philip, an orphan, has to maneuver a life as a young apprentice in art and medicine. Philip moves on to Paris to live in a commune of sorts with other artists, which is contrasted with squalor of London. Philip becomes entangled in a love affair so viscous and compulsive it threatens to do him in. Of Human Bondage is a long work, but it allows Maugham to build up an incredible array of memorable characters. You won't forget Mildred Rogers, the torrid love interest, though she is shallow and unfaithful. You'll find that their twisted relationship is almost a character itself, as Maugham demonstrates that love is itself a form of bondage.

While the plot is rather slow, the characters are very complex and thought provoking. The book is rather outdated now (turn of the 20th century Europe) so some of the words used and events referenced require context clues or brief research.

What Did You Do In The Great War Grandpa - Volume 2, by B. J. Bryan

About the Author History was always my favorite subject. I was 2 months shy of my 7th birthday when World War II began with the United States becoming involved. I remember the troop trains, the ladies no longer being able to purchase the silk stockings as they were being used to make parachutes the troops would need. I remember the ration books we had to use to purchase gas and other necessary items. I remember the “butter” not being butter but lard but to make it look more like butter we put in yellow coloring. Being brought up on a farm, my father either donated or sold cows, pigs, an occasional horse, and some chickens to the military.   This book took me some time research locating my brother-in-law’s tank battalion’s history and other tank survivors and relatives those who died. I am a Women’s Army Corps veteran (Korean Conflict) having taken Basic Training at Fort Lee, Virginia and my base afterwards was Fort McClellan, Alabama, both of which are now closed.   At age 71 I was honored to go on the Ride for the Wall from Magalia, California to Washington, D.C. in honor of all veterans but especially the Vietnam vets as many of them did not get a welcome home. I’d make the trip again in a heartbeat as it was wonderful, inspiring, met lots of interesting people along the way, ex-military men and women, if there is such a thing as “ex-military,” because what one learns in basic, one never forgets, and seeing some of this wonderful country.  This is an excellent source of some of our military history and great for history buffs. You have to read this book!   Thank you and God Bless America. B. J. Bryan
