Old fashioned By Keith T Gibson This was also published under the title "Sejanus, Secret Ruler of Rome", in 1979, even though it isn't about Sejanus.This novel was originally published in 1889, and definitely is written in an old-fashioned style, with the author stopping the flow of the story multiple times and "talking" to the reader about how old Italy was compared to "modern" Italy is (modern when the story was written, that is).The basic story is that Julius Martialis is a centurion whose main job is as a courier between Rome and the Isle of Capri, where the emperor Tiberius is living. Julius has met a girl that he likes in the town of Surrentum, named Naera, who is the daughter of a local potter, and wants to marry her.At the same time, a Roman knight, named Domitius Afar, is attending his uncle, Fabricius, who continues to search for his missing grand-daughter, who disappeared as a little girl fifteen years earlier. This knight is soon revealed as dupliticious, as he eagerly attempts to send his uncle to the after-life in a fiendish scheme to get all of his uncle's money. The scheme is thwarted by Julius, by accident, as he comes across a gang of ruffians about to kill Febricius, and puts a stop to it. Julius becomes friends with Fabricius as a result.Julius learns about Fabricius' search for the grand-daughter, but cannot help, as he has his own problems.These stories, and a few more, are tied together as the story progresses, and over-all it is done well. The story-telling is old-fashioned, but acceptable.For the most part, the story ends in a satisfactory way, with the exception that some of the side characters' story-lines are left unresolved in the end, and the ending is very rushed. The reader learns about many of the fates of the characters only with a two-line summary at the very end, almost as if the novel was required to be a certain length, and it had exceeded that length, so must end forthwith.

Obviously, none of those issues is settled easily by enacting a law, because we’re still wrestling with all of them today. To complicate matters, there have been dramatic shifts in how people view mercy, mental illness, capital punishment, and the role of forensic science. To put it mildly, the path to what constitutes modern law and order has been as bumpy as the Oregon Trail that built the state in the first place.

Many of the stories are dark, people getting away with murder, but I gained in my understanding of the problems of creating a civil society out of a wilderness. Cavalry in Future Wars is fascinating for being written at a point of radical, revolutionary change in the means of war. It shows, given our benefits of hindsight, how extremely difficult it is to see the future potentials of new technology. It also shows, again with hindsight's benefits, the politics of managing change.The work is a clear ancestor of the ideas Guderian puts forward in Achtung Panzer, with the obvious difference being the author starts from the false premise that the horse remains relevant to general European warfare, and the obvious omission being no reference to the work in Guderian's writing. In the former case, this is illustrative of the challenge all analysts and theoreticians face in identifying which of the current conditions will fall and which prevail in the face of radical change. In the latter case, even though armoured warfare doctrine was essentially just updating the cavalry mission to exploit the potential offered by new technology, the resistance of contemporary cavalry practitioners (wedded to their horses) compelled differentiation.None of which detracts from the quality of the analysis presented in this book from the first principles accepted by the author. A must read for the student of military theory and the analyst of future needs.

Funk Mr. Trimmer's first book "Condemned Property?, really opened my eyes to the scope and magnitude of the price these brave vets paid after they returned home. Suicide rates skyrocketed among returning Vietnam Vets, as did other illnesses. The VA ignored these Vet's pleas for help and fought them tooth and nail while they continued to die in numbers well above the death rates from the survivors of previous wars. This book which came out in late 2013 helped bring awareness to the public that resulted in the 2014 VA hearings and leading to changes at the VA directing them to stop their policy of "Deny, Deny, Until You Die,"When I heard that Mr. Trimmer had written a sequel, I ordered it immediately. This well written powerful book was the perfect follow-up to his initial expose’ effort. In it he recounts many of the responses he had received and continues to receive from Vets, their family members, congress, senators and yes, even from our new VA Secretary Bob, as he likes to be called. Several Vets credited Mr. Trimmer's book from preventing their suicides. "Payback Time" calls out the politicians responsible for the past VA policies and tells us how to be sure that our government properly takes care of the veterans of all wars and conflicts, including the current ones. Mr. Trimmer points out that we need to hold our government's feet to the fire. We must not let them drop the momentum for change begun in 2014. We the people must not permit the government to slide on their obligations to properly and promptly: treat and provide short and long term rehabilitation for our returning veterans for their physical and mental wounds; resolve treatment and disability claims quickly and fairly; assist them in returning to productive civilian lives; provide education and job training as necessary. We also must provide for the families of deceased and injured veterans.This is an important book that all Americans should read. Veterans, their family members and all citizens that have relied on our military to provide for our collective defense in a dangerous world should read this book. Think about it. Our military are 100% volunteers. They take an oath to follow the orders of the President of the United States, elected by the people, at the risk of severe injury, mental disorder or even death. Killing others, seeing friends killed, becoming maimed or mentally impaired and living under combat hardships while serving their country is very traumatic. Being ignored by the government after returning home is rude and ungrateful."Payback Time" reminds us of our obligations to our Veterans, especially those who served in Combat. I spoke with the author on the phone and have had the opportunity to meet him in person. Even though he suffers from PTSD, Hypertension, and 2 strokes directly resulting from his combat experiences including exposure to Agent Orange, this highly decorated combat veteran fought the VA for years before finally getting some treatment and disability payments.He now spends 100% of his time writing, making appearances, emailing and talking to vets and their family members. He has attended too many funerals of platoon members who left this life too soon because the VA denied them treatment or refused to recognize their disabilities. He also told me that many of their wives died prematurely from the stress and constant frustration of dealing with their husband's maladies and the constant rejection and delays by our VA. Mr. Trimmer funds this full time effort through book sales, donations and personal funds.Do yourself, your country. Leap Of Faith Review Based On Stellar, Recent Past Performance By World Explorer In advance, and, in good faith I have to give Dusty Trimmer's book, PAYBACK TIME! A 5-star review. I was the pre-press editor on his previous book. I felt the passion of his prose, knew by cross-reference, that his information was well researched, and also that his writing (samples) matched up well on the readability scale of a very credible online source. Until the end of the tenure of our present political presidential regiment that is in place, I have ceased from reading any military books or with being involved in any military organization until which time it will be proclaimed from the top, the American is still a Christian Nation. Still: I recommend this book in advance....if it is anything close to the quality, riveting prose, and honesty like the author's previous book, Condemned Property?....it's "a keeper."

The book exemplifies the tragedy of what is the perfect storm; insertions of incompetent politicians and government deceit; a press that is more interested in headlines and molding public opinion; the terrible effects of chemicals such as agent orange. After giving it all, Viet Nam veterans had to contend with not only physical and psychological disabilities but also a hostile public and an unsympathetic and often deceptive government. The importance of the book is not only the documentation based on the author’s experiences, but also an implied warning that such a tragic occurrence can occur again.William E.Cornell

Some years later, when more had been made public about the immense secret contribution to victory of these deception plans, Sir Ronald Wingate, Bt., CB, CMG, CIE, OBE, recalled this episode, in which he had played such an important part. At that time, James Leasor was working on Green Beach, which described an incident in the 1942 Dieppe landing, when another volunteer, Flight-Sergeant Jack Nissen, a radar expert in the RAF, accompanied the Canadians to assess a new German radar station at Pourville. Because of Nissen's knowledge of Allied radar, orders were given that if capture seemed likely he was to be killed by his escort of 12 soldiers. Lord Mountbatten was horrified at these orders. He remarked that there had been no need whatever to put radar secret at risk when members of X-Troop were trained for such tasks. He suggested that James Leasor should write a book based on the experiences of these men. The Unknown Warrior is the true story of one of these men and his amazing part in the deception plans to persuade the Germans that the invasion would happen near Calais and not in Normandy and thus ensure that they did not commit their reserves until too late. Born to a humble German background, with a Jewish father and Catholic mother, he was brought up as English due to a mix-up when he was very small. Not really sure of his real name or nationality he is initially interned by the British but enlists for service and ends up in X-Troop. He volunteers for an unknown secret mission which sees him dropped in France, pursued by both the Resistance and the Germans, briefing first Rommel and then Hitler in a role that saved perhaps thousands of lives.

A Child's Treasury of Japanese Fairy Tales By Zack Davisson Originally published in 1903, Yei Theodora Ozaki's translation of Sadanami Sanjin's collection of Japanese fairy tales has been the introduction of many a young child into the legends and fables of old Japan across the years. Definitely not a scholarly reference or valuable research tool for folktale researchers, Ozaki unabashedly re-crafted some of the stories, translating loosely and adding in elements of unrelated tales, in order to make them more enjoyable and understandable for Western children. She even gave Urashimataro a happy ending!There is something delightfully romantic about translations from this era, due to the unfamiliarity with Japanese culture at the time. Terms that would not be translated today, like "oni" and "samurai", are rendered as "ogre" and "knight" and other English equivalents. While unauthentic, this makes the stories more approachable by young children who have a mind for fantasy but haven't yet graduated to Japanese Studies.While far from a picture book, artist Kakuzo Fujiyama contributed 66 beautiful drawings to illustrate the 22 tales. Unfortunately, all the illustrations are reproduced in black-and-white, instead of the original color plates included in the original pressings.Many of the stories here are familiar with anyone even slightly interested in Japanese folklore. "Momotaro, or the Story of the Son of a Peach, "The Story of Urashima Taro, the Fisher Lad", "Kintaro the Golden Boy" and "The Ogre of Rashomon". Along with these, there are rarer tales that I haven't seen in any other Japanese fairy tale collection. "The Stones of Five Colors and the Empress Jokwa", "The Sagacious Monkey and the Boar" and "How and Old Man Lost his Wren" were all new to me.

Not well formatted for the Kindle By Amazon Customer the stories are wonderful. a few of them match some of the stoies we heard while living in Okinawa with the military.HOWEVER, I cannot give the Kindle version a 5 star like I would like to, because the formatting is absolutely horrendous.

JAPANESE FAIRY TALES by Yei Theodora Ozaki By MOTU Review Japanese Fairy Tales, also known as The Japanese Fairy Book, is a 1908 collection of traditional fables and folktales compiled and translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki.As I understand it, this is a somewhat liberal translation; accuracy to the source material has obviously been sacrificed to a certain extent for the sake of accessibility. Interestingly, words that would not be translated today are translated here for the sake of the Western audience ("samurai," for example, is translated "knight"). Many of these stories are not concise - they tend to meander - and some end rather abruptly. Without substantial familiarity with the original material, it's difficult to determine how much of this is the stories themselves and how much is Ozaki's doing, but I suspect the latter is more responsible.These stories are, nevertheless, mostly quite enjoyable, and the differences and similarities with Western fairy tales are particularly interesting. (Wicked stepmothers, apparently, are a source of plot conflict the world over.)Many of these stories are grim and violent, of the degree of the original un-sanitized Grimm Brothers' tales. There are vicious revenge stories here, and the ones involving animals bring to mind Tom and Jerry (or, perhaps more accurately, Itchy and Scratchy, never mind Happy Tree Friends), even with some obvious sanitizing ("The Farmer and the Badger" is a notable example). Many stories do not have happy endings. They certainly aren't all for small children.Accuracy aside, Japanese Fairy Tales is a nice little collection of stories, and a decent introduction to Japanese folklore.

Well-researched, Entertaining History Told in Photos and Captions By Diane Skelton Fascinating captions accompany this vast collection of historic photos arranged to tell the history of Long Beach, Mississippi. The author has assembled an extensive array of photos and post cards from private collections, church and organization archives, and libraries. She’s compiled them in chronological order by categories as Early Settlers, The Beach, Education, Gulf Park College for Women, Agriculture and Business, Churches, Hurricanes, and Leisure and Everyday Life. The captions, some of which even include information from the backs of the photos, read like stories themselves – a family with 13 children moves to the area to enable incorporation, the Gulf Park College president “buzzes” the school with his private plane in the 1920s. One caption explains how residents used oxen to pull boats back in the water after the 1915 hurricane. The Church section includes a caption about the church where meetings were held to draw plans for school desegregation. I especially enjoyed the chapters on Gulf Park College for Women and the one on Hurricanes.The selection of historic photos used in the Gulf Park chapter is especially delightful. If you’ve ever lived on or near the Mississippi Gulf Coast or visited the area, you’ll enjoy this well-researched and entertaining book.
