Some people, without doubt, are born with a deep instinct for carrying a cane; some consciously acquire the habit of carrying a cane; and some find themselves in a position where the matter of carrying a cane is thrust upon them. Canes are carried in all parts of the world, and have been carried—or that which was the forefather of them has been carried—since human history began. Indeed, a very fair account of mankind might be made by writing the story, of its canes. And nothing that would readily occur to mind would more eloquently express a civilisation than its evident attitude toward canes.

Entertaining and literate observations of life By Charles van Buren This 1918 work contains well written, literate, interesting and sometimes humorous essays on a variety of subjects including walking sticks, fish marketing, walking journeys, wearing hats, literary reviews, death and obituaries, attending art exhibitions and many more. The connecting thread being the observations of life. Some begin as one thing and segue effortlessly into something else entirely. The essay entitled A Town Constitutional is a good example. Holiday was, in his lifetime, a noted essayist, instructor and literary editor.

Blankenship I ordered this up on my Kindle simply because the subject, found in the title, was about waling sticks, or canes. I am one of those throwbacks who should probably have lived a hundred or so years ago when it comes to canes or walking sticks...I love the things, collect them and indeed, have been making them for years.I enjoyed every word of the essay written back in 1918 concerning walking sticks. The author gives us a nice history and stresses the joy of actually using the things. I am one of those people who simply cannot walk or take a hike with out a good cane so I felt right at home.Imagine my delight though that there were quite a number of essays in this small volume covering subjects as attending an art showing, on being a fish reporter, the pleasures of taking a journey (according to the author the only true journey is one you take by walking and walking only...my kind of guy, on wearing hats, on writing literary reviews (disagreed with the author here but hey...to each his own),, writing about death and writing obituaries and a plethora of other sort of off beat subjects. These essays are well written, well researched and indeed, some have a twinkle of a humor sprinkled here and there throughout. The art of writing essays is one we have slowly lost over the years which is a true pity because we are all missing some very god reading by no having more collections available and no new essays being written such as in older times. We have lost a lot I fear.I highly recommend this one to anyone who simply enjoys good writing and a rather off beat view of life.

Why Lost Travelers Guides?

We were sick and tired of long, boring, and biased guides out in the market that not only waste our time but also waste money. We continuously had to ask someone for the simplest of things that could have easily been found if we could speak the language of the location, or that should have been in the guide! As we continuously face this problem we decided we wanted to make a guide that that would cover everything a traveler needs to know from the point of Arrival to Departure. And the Lost Travelers Guides were born. When having our guides created we take a lot into consideration such as time, therefore our guides are short and to the point. But mainly we ask ourselves and other travelers what we enjoy during a travel and what we wish we had known prior to visiting the location and that is where the Lost Travelers guides excels. As the Lost Travelers Guide team, we only have one goal and that is to make sure that our guides are the best out, and provides the most value available.

It's very easy to read and the layout of information was great. I had no idea that there was so many things to do in Istanbul. I'm definitely going to show my girlfriend this book she would love to read about the pool in the ocean, night life, and the palace tour might a great sight. One thing that I didn't understand was in the beginning of the book it talked about how you should travel in packs of 2 with at least 1 man, but just before that talked about how safe it was. All in all this is a great read has me thinking about traveling there in the future. Getting to taste the different herbal and spices native to turkey.

Lots of useful information in a concise form. I like that in every guide is the highlight with the characteristics of each city, which is the subject guide. For example, I'm going to take advantage of the advice of the chapter "Top Things To Do". I know already that the author only gives good advice

Great places mentioned that I wanted to check out. When you travel from place to place and you have limited time, and want shortcuts on where and what to do this is the book for you. Great for transport info and places to eat, historical landmarks and cultural experiences. Highly recommended.

An excellent travel guide By Anita At last, a kindle travel guide packed with a wealth of information which is logically organized and readily accessible.Information: *Detailed information on places and sights includes opening hours and admission fees as well as direct links to the websites. *A sizable listing of hotels and restaurants includes some high-end places, not just backpacker haunts *A whole section describes Indian food and includes a "menu decoder" *The shopping section describes locally crafted items as well as large market places *Arts sections note specifics of everything from Theyyam rituals to cooking courses to festivals and offer sources for further reading as well as on-line sites *Practical information sections give you health, banking, communication, transportation, etc. information and even warn you about scamsAccessibility: I have had my Kindle Fire for several years and have enjoyed the ability to highlight, bookmark pages and to expand a guidebook's map by tapping and spreading my fingers. With this guidebook, however, I used the free kindle app to put this guide on my Samsung tablet. This enabled me on any page to use the 3 bars in the top left corner to pull down a table of contents and click on a desired location. This made navigating the book a lot easier. Are there any negatives? A few but they are slight. Occasionally a page is skipped but by going forward a few pages and then going back, you can retrieve the missing page. The ability to go back to the previous page in another part of the book would be nice. For the first time I really think the kindle version is an advantage over the hardback book, and not just for the traveler to have less to carry. It is wonderful to have not only the book's detailed maps with places pinpointed but also Google maps that you can access directly with a tap.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lonely Planet has really disappointed me in the last few years By Teri Lonely Planet has really disappointed me in the last few years. I felt this book was missing major components that they usually do well on (culture and politics) and also referred to many places that didn't exist or weren't open. I ended up using trip advisor to find most hotels. Sad that these books haven't evolved with the times. The itineraries were useful for planning.

I bought the kindle version and was disappointed to find no pictures in this edition By dawn goodman I bought the kindle version and was disappointed to find no pictures in this edition ....it was reasonably helpful for the Tamil Nadu part of my journey, and MOST helpful in the town I visited in Maharastra for 3 weeks.

I wrote this book in Paris in the winter of 1917-18—in the midst of bombs, and raids, and death. Everyone was keyed up to a strange pitch, and only primitive instincts seemed to stand out distinctly. Life appeared brutal, and our very fashion of speaking, the words we used, the way we looked at things, was more realistic—coarser—than in times of peace, when civilization can re-assert itself again. This is why the story shocks some readers. I quite understand that it might do so; but I deem it the duty of writers to make a faithful picture of each phase of the era they are living in, that posterity may be correctly informed about things, and get the atmosphere of epochs.

Review Code Black is a tale of our war in Afghanistan told by one of the men who fought there. It is visceral, truthful and, above all, thought-provoking. Code Black is an impressive achievement and a compelling read.―Bernard CornwellA fast-paced, thrilling account of British heroism, brave men surrounded and fighting against overwhelming odds. This is the real, sometimes shocking, and deeply personal story of modern warfare and PTSD.―Andy McNabAn absorbing, authentic and movingly accurate account of the fight in Helmand and at home.―Patrick Hennessey, author of Kandak and The Junior Officer's Reading ClubAn excellent read, the pressures of command and combat intercut with the pressure of subsequently trying to make sense of what happened, how he reacted and whether it was worth it.―Sunday Times MagazineAuthentic. Revelatory. Shocking. Edge-of-the seat heart-thumping dust and blood and sheer guts. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a hidden time-bomb amongst British veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. This hugely timely book reveals in gripping detail the personal stories of its hidden victims - lest we forget.―Damien Lewis

About the Author Mark Evans (Author) Like many boys who don't want to be train drivers or astronauts, Mark grew up wanting to be a soldier. After a standard schooling involving rugby, football, girls and all manner of detentions he left Oxfordshire for University College London to study archaeology. Discovering a lack of real-life Indiana Jones moments, Mark eventually fulfilled his boyhood ambition and was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 2004.From Nigeria to Canada, Belize to Buckingham Palace, Mark had a diverse and fulfilling career, seeing active service in both Iraq and Afghanistan. On his return from Afghanistan Mark was diagnosed with PTSD and subsequently left the army in 2010 after reaching the rank of Captain. His experiences have led him to work with Help for Heroes and Combat Stress to raise awareness for those affected by recent conflicts. After a turbulent couple of years dealing with the aftermath of war Mark is now happily settled in South West London with his girlfriend.

By Anna Erishkigal I have read many books written by U.S. soldiers about their experience fighting a war in Afghanistan and Iraq, but this is the first book I've read from the British point of view. 'Code Black' refers to when a Forward Operating Base is declared too unsafe for a helicopter to fly in and resupply them with food and ammo. The actual 'code black' in the story is merely one of many complications the author/soldier experienced 'over there.' Like most true-to-life military stories, there is lots of shooting and near-death experiences, but what I found unique about this book was the author/soldier developed a grudging respect for the much-maligned Afghan National Army and was able to articulate just -why- they won him over.

Yet, rather than other individuals feels you have to instil in on your own that you are reading not as a result of that factors. Reading this will certainly provide you greater than people appreciate. It will certainly guide to recognize greater than the people staring at you. Once upon a time—a fairly long ago time—there lived in a neat little cottage two young girls who were sisters. If you had gone to see them on a bright warm summer's day, I daresay you would have envied them and their life and their lot. For they were pretty and healthy and they loved each other dearly, and the cottage was charming to look at, in its dress of clustering roses and honeysuckle and traveller's joy, and other sweet and beautiful climbing, flowering plants. Furthermore, it stood in a little garden filled with treasures of different kinds, pansies, of which there was a great variety, and lilies and mignonette and all the flowers one loves to see in an old-fashioned garden of the kind. And the sisters kept it in perfect order, the beds were always raked, there was never a weed to be seen, the tiny plots of grass were like velvet.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fairies Afield By Amazon Customer Fairies Afield is a cutesy book filled with kind and generous children/teenagers doing wonderfully charming and sweet things, for which they receive magical rewards from fairies. It's saccharine and childish, and I honestly kinda loved it. Seriously, this book stopped just short of being too much, and aside from a few paragraphs where descriptions dragged on a bit too long, the stories were all a wonderful read. There are a few warnings to give, however. Because of the age of this book (1911--over a hundred years old!), there are a few things that today's audience might find objectionable. First is the gender roles, especially the women. It's not too bad, but there are a few points where the various female characters talk down about themselves, and...I don't know, it just felt very antiquated. Probably not a big deal. The second warning is even less of a deal, and that is that several words that are now used as offensive slurs against certain people are used in the book. In the text they have their old meanings of "strange," "happy," and "sticks," but I like to warn people when they're going to run into those words, because invariably someone will be offended. Try not to let it be you.The four stories are:"Ask the Robin": Two orphaned sisters need to survive on their own, but may need the fairies' help to do soA Magic Table: Three impoverished cousins must earn the right to inherit their uncle's fortuneThe Weather Maiden: A shy young girl has a terrible time adjusting to living with her aunt and uncle--at least until she gets some supernatural assistanceThe Enchanted Trunks: When a girl agrees to travel with her cousin, her main worry is being able to pack everything efficiently

By SimplySherryl If you’ve never taken the time to explore an Amish community/area, then I think you’re missing out. There are several within easy driving distance of where we live and we enjoy shopping in our favorite places when we’re in the area. One of the more well known areas is Lancaster County, PA. And this book, Signs of Lancaster County, will take you on a photographic journey of this beautiful piece of country. This journey through Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, captures a glimpse of Amish Country through 240 color photographs of unique signs in their natural settings. The signs and graphics of official markers, one-room schoolhouses, roadside stands, cottage industries, local trades, and many more tell the story of this special place. Join the photographer on a scenic adventure through back roads, expansive farmland, and quaint villages, with informative and entertaining anecdotes along the way. You’ll discover new details every time you page through this extraordinary picture book. It’s a tour of Amish country like none other. For armchair tourists, sign buffs, and photography fans alike. One of the first ways you know you’re in “the country” is either when the roads change or the types of signs you see along the way.For instance, you don’t see too many stenciled or hand written signs advertising chicken eggs, cabbage, hay or saddles in the town I live in. But within 20 miles, where most folks live off the land and raise crops or animals, they start showing up.And that’s certainly the case in Lancaster County. It’s not all Amish folks of course, but I’d say it’s definitely more country/farmland than not. This book takes readers through a fun, entertaining and educational trip by reading different signs whether they are street names, school houses, crops for sale, or just road signs that many of us wouldn’t see on a daily basis. I really liked the little explanations or local stories about the signs when they author included them. It made me feel like I was on a guided tour that I could take my time on with no one rushing me.Unexpectedly, I found my grandchildren taking an interest in the book as well, since there was little reading that had to be done. But we could talk about the signs, the icons on the signs and the surrounding area in the pictures which has become a different approach to reading and art.Promotional or discounted product provided for review.

Excerpt from Through Siberia and Manchuria by RailThis short account of my journey from London to Shanghai by way of the Siberian Railway was at first intended for private circulation only, in order to meet the enquiries of numerous personal friends. Now, however, that war has broken out between Russia and Japan, and that it may be years before this, the longest railway in the world, is again open to international traffic, I feel that any information, however slight, concerning so stupendous an undertaking, as well as about the remote region which it traverses, may be of interest to the general public.I wish to emphasize that much of what is herein described was seen only from the windows of a moving train, and must therefore be lacking in that accuracy and detail which closer inspection could alone insure. The Russian words "KTO HAETb?" on the cover signify "who goes there"?, and the Chinese characters represent my surname. The Russian cross at the end, is that of the original Greek Church.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Flower At a time when most people could not afford travel these books provided entertainment and insight to those who wished they had the opportunity to travel. This writer provided some very astute observations on the state of Russia just prior to the outbreak of hostilities with Japan. Many of the authors predictions proved true from a historical prospective but his daily observations of Russia and Siberia are colorful and entertaining as well as insightful.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting, seems authentic By ttmadison If you're interested in the Trans-Siberian railroad experience, this book will give you an overview from an independent traveler who stops along the way and writes about each region. It's not a travel book per se, so if you're planning a trip, you will need other resources. Somewhat depressing is all the poverty in Central Southern Siberia.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Of limited interest By R. Thomson The author devotes most of the book to a description of the largely rural scenery he observed from the train's window. He displays little interest in his fellow passengers or in the train itself, and none in the political situation of the day.

On April 23, 1912, the Lord Chancellor appointed a wreck commissioner under the merchant shipping acts, and on April 26 the home secretary nominated five assessors. On April 30 the board of trade requested that a formal investigation of the circumstances attending the loss of the steamship Titanic should be held, and the court accordingly commenced to sit on May 2. Since that date there have been 37 public sittings, at which 97 witnesses have been examined, while a large number of documents, charts, and plans have been produced. The 26 questions formulated by the board of trade, which are set out in detail below, appear to cover all the circumstances to be inquired into.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Worthwhile By MK This report continues to beg more questions than it answers, even more than a century after it was produced. The behavior of the Californian is a case in point. However, the behavior of governmental and regulatory authorities is covered in some detail, which is invaluable in understanding why the Titanic carried so few lifeboats. All in all, this report is worthwhile as a step for anyone seeking pertinent information, yet it is neither exhaustive or definitive. Perhaps it is best understood as a document of specific focus, the route of the ship, the decisions of her captain, the behavior of her crew, the integrity of her construction are where this report shines. The enormity of the Titanic disaster continues to haunt us to this day, continues to leave us with an unsatisfactory collection of facts, and continues to defy our attempts to put it to rest. Seen in this light, the British government report is a reflection of this state.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It is fine and informative for what it is By W Alexander Vacca This is only the official report of the British Wreck Commissioner's Inquiry (Mersey inquiry), and offers the conclusions on the various points of investigation. This is not a transcript of the testimony and evidence put before the inquiry. It is fine and informative for what it is, but anybody looking for the testimony and cross examination will not find it here.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thorough treatment of subject By John Krnacik The book treats the subject thoroughly and clearly. I had no idea that the subject was so complex and feel much better informed now that I've finished reading the report. The report is an excellent place to begin if one wishes to learn more about the topic.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. It motivates change and improvement By Bobby This book is informative and applicable. It shares ideas and examples of how a person can stay positive, make wise decisions, and develop effective communication skills. I enjoyed the format of the chapters. Of course, this book isn't as deep as "a crossing or the drop's history" by Anatoliy Obraztsov what I've read before and, in fact, I prefer deep books. But I rated "The Science of Mind" 5! Each chapter expresses an idea and gives an example from the author's life, an example from research or scientific authority, and an example from the Bible. The information is clear and easy to read, yet causes the reader to reflect and ponder new ideas. It motivates change and improvement.

M. Wollstonecraft was born in 1759. Her father was so great a wanderer, that the place of her birth is uncertain; she supposed, however, it was London, or Epping Forest: at the latter place she spent the first five years of her life. In early youth she exhibited traces of exquisite sensibility, soundness of understanding, and decision of character; but her father being a despot in his family, and her mother one of his subjects, Mary, derived little benefit from their parental training. She received no literary instructions but such as were to be had in ordinary day schools. Before her sixteenth year she became acquainted with Mr. Clare a clergyman, and Miss Frances Blood; the latter, two years older than herself; who possessing good taste and some knowledge of the fine arts, seems to have given the first impulse to the formation of her character. At the age of nineteen, she left her parents, and resided with a Mrs. Dawson for two years; when she returned to the parental roof to give attention to her mother, whose ill health made her presence necessary. On the death of her mother, Mary bade a final adieu to her father's house, and became the inmate of F. Blood; thus situated, their intimacy increased, and a strong attachment was reciprocated. In 1783 she commenced a day school at Newington green, in conjunction with her friend, F. Blood. At this place she became acquainted with Dr. Price, to whom she became strongly attached; the regard was mutual.

The story of my hero By Leslie Soule I recently traveled to India, a country steeped in patriarchy, and it made me appreciate the struggle for women's rights in America, and its pioneers like Mary Wollstonecraft, whose volume A Vindication of the Rights of Woman paved the way for social progress.

Maybe next time, sender may consider another type of mailing service besides snail mail. (I do understand some people have a problem paying extra but... just let them know and it's not an issue... Hopefully) Thank you for your service though =)

From the Inside Flap Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago nation comprising as many as 17,000 islands spread over the same distance as Los Angleles to New York, or Perth to Sydney.  Indonesia is also the most culturally diverse nation on the planet and its national motto had to be 'Unity in Diversity' as these islands are an extraordinary mixture of races, religions, languages and cultures.Ian Burnet sets out on a journey across the archipelago to discover this rich cultural diversity. He describes how the early Malay people came to these islands and the influence of the Indian religions of Hinduism and Buddhism on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Bali. He discovers the heritage of the Indians, Chinese and Arabs who came here to trade in spices and sandalwood, he follows the rise of Islam and the traces of the first Europeans to enter Asia - particularly the early Portuguese traders and priests who brought Christianity to these lands.Travelling by bus, plane, train, ferry, boat, car and motorcycle from Java to Timor, he hops from island to island across the archipelago, following the smoking volcanoes that form its spine. Ian Burnet combines his love of adventure and travel with his knowledge of history to take us on a personal journey through geographic space and historical time, which will delight all armchair travellers.

About the Author Ian Burnet has spent thirty years, living, working and travelling in Indonesia and is fascinated by the rich history and diverse cultures of the archipelago. His first book, Spice Islands, tells the 2000 year history of the spice trade from the Moluccas of Eastern Indonesia through China, India and the Middle East until the spices reached Europe. His second book, East Indies, begins in the port city of Malacca, and tells the story of the 200 year struggle between the Portuguese Crown, the Dutch East India Company and the English East India Company for trade supremacy in the Eastern Seas. It follows the rise of the world's first joint stock and multinational trading companies and their conversion to huge colonial states ruling over millions of people in Indonesia, India and Malaya.Ian lives with his family in Sydney, Australia, and is currently researching another book on Indonesia's fascinating history.

Another excellent book by Ian Burnet produced to a very high standard By RobW Another great book from Ian Burnett produced to the very high standards of this publisherThis is a personal journey across Indonesia - unlike so many travelogs he has lived here for many years, speaks the language and understands the culture (as much as anyone can in this most complex country)He mixes in the travel, the food and the history in a very accesible accountOnly quibble is that some of the new maps illustrating his route are unclear in places - which is a pity as no publisher I know reproduces the older maps and pictures he includes to such an amazing standard

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Small Country town In A Slow Country mood By W. Powell Finishing Mr. Opp I felt I’d missed something in the story’s final message. So I went back to the beginning in order to re-read the introduction of the man showcased throughout the story. After 30 pages I realized not what I’d missed but what obscured from me the good qualities of this righteous man; Love and Pride.Once Mr. Opp falls for the younger Genieve, he gets stuck trying to be a man of importance in order to win her over. The kindly, fun Mr. Opp introduced to the reader in the beginning is lost to an imposter, trying desperately to win over a woman and town.By the time the truly goodhearted Mr. Opp is humbled and returns to form, the story is at its end and his heroic and loyal stance of sacrificing self-accomplishment and success for family loyalty and obligation seems almost a pity, instead of heroic. Thus I’m forced to re-read the entire story sometime down the road in hopes of uncovering the heroic Mr. Opp as he bumbles through temporary celebrity status and love pangs.
