So I went back to the beginning in order to re-read the introduction of the man showcased throughout the story. After 30 pages I realized not what I’d missed but what obscured from me the good qualities of this righteous man; Love and Pride.Once Mr. Opp falls for the younger Genieve, he gets stuck trying to be a man of importance in order to win her over. The kindly, fun Mr. Opp introduced to the reader in the beginning is lost to an imposter, trying desperately to win over a woman and town.By the time the truly goodhearted Mr. Opp is humbled and returns to form, the story is at its end and his heroic and loyal stance of sacrificing self-accomplishment and success for family loyalty and obligation seems almost a pity, instead of heroic. Thus I’m forced to re-read the entire story sometime down the road in hopes of uncovering the heroic Mr. Opp as he bumbles through temporary celebrity status and love pangs.
