Bruen Jr. Newspaperman Walter Jameson is assigned to shadow his friend Professor Craig Kennedy for a month to report on how he solves mysterious crimes and to give "an intimate picture of the man and his work." Basically, Kennedy's a scientist who uses his superior scientific knowledge and a bunch of contraptions he makes to expose the criminals. The science is dated, sometimes almost comical, and the descriptions of that science and his contraptions can be belabored and confusing. The stories do possess charm, but it wears off. The book's perhaps best read as a curiosity or a period piece. I lost interest and did not finish it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Reeve is excellent By dennis decrescenzo I went on a "Reeve binge" and read most of his stories. Old-fashioned and dated but with a charm all it's own. Get past the dated science and you will like it.

4 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Omniscient By Jorge Frid At first the stories are interesting to read. As you read another and another story and you see that Craig Kennedy knows everything from every subject the book gets boring. The worst part is that you must be some kind of scientist to understand all the contraptions he used to discover the bad guy.

The Search for a Secret Document By Acute Observer The Secret AdversaryThis story begins on May 7, 1915 when a man gives an important document to a young girl for safekeeping and delivery to the American Ambassador to England. Miss Prudence Cowley meets Tommy Beresford, both are out of work and can’t find jobs (Chapter 1). [The beginning of the Great Depression.] They overhear a conversation about a “Jane Finn”, then learn more about this name. They are hired as “Private Inquiry Agents” by a secret government official (Chapter III). Tommy hears talk about a General Strike (Chapter VIII). Prudence will work undercover as a maid (Chapter IX). [Did you get a hint in Chapter XIII?]Tommy escapes from his captors (Chapter XVII). Tuppence has gone away due to a false message and they try to track her (Chapter XVIII). They locate Jane Finn (Chapter XIX). Can they find the hidden document (Chapter XX)? Jane Finn tells her story (Chapter XXV). She hid two pages in a safe place, they will rush to retrieve them. They return to that Soho flat to retrieve those pages and get a big surprise! [Refer to Chapter XIII.] There is a celebration for the good guys (Chapter XXVII). Would the press print a favorable obituary on an important person? Tommy explains his actions, he didn’t know who to trust. Chapter XXVIII has the ending for Jane and Julius, and Tuppence and Tommy. This is an interesting story that holds your interest page after page. Do some parts seem implausible? The idea of a character who is not what he or she seems would be used in another of Christie’s mystery novels. The idea of a small group controlling events is not just “conspiracy theory”. One interesting part is the culture or background to this story. Note the freedom to keep and bear arms in those days. Agatha Christie wrote this mystery novel in 1922 at the beginning of her long writing career. She is one of the best-known and widely-read writers of all times, and the most widely translated British author in the world.

By Don Kidwell Possibly one of the most frequently purchased of Agatha Christies' books either alone or as part of a compilation that makes for a fine introduction to the characters of fictional detectives Thomas Beresford and Prudence Beresford (Tommy and Tuppence). A decent book in and of itself, or do yourself one better and purchase an illustrated version or as made part of a collection for what may be the same price. Good book!

There are many of us in England who consider the crime which has been wrought in the Congo lands by King Leopold of Belgium and his followers to be the greatest which has ever been known in human annals. Personally I am strongly of that opinion. There have been great expropriations like that of the Normans in England or of the English in Ireland. There have been massacres of populations like that of the South Americans by the Spaniards or of subject nations by the Turks. But never before has there been such a mixture of wholesale expropriation and wholesale massacre all done under an odious guise of philanthropy and with the lowest commercial motives as a reason. It is this sordid cause and the unctious hypocrisy which makes this crime unparalleled in its horror.

The Crime of the Congo, by Arthur Conan Doyle

About the Author Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father left when he was five, but returned three years later, however, the family lived in poverty. Arthur was supported by his wealthy uncles and educated in a Jesuit preparatory school, then Stonyhurst College, then another school in Austria, before studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh through 1881. Beginning in 1879, began writing published stories and article for various magazines and journals. He became a ship’s surgeon and traveled to locations such as Greenland and West Africa, completing his doctorate while on board. He eventually set up an unsuccessful medical practice, but ended up writing more stories instead of seeing patients. Doyle’s success as a writer, began when his first Sherlock Holmes mystery was published in a magazine in 1886. A second Holmes story was requested by the magazine, with more appearing as time progressed. Arthur was also a soccer player under the name A. C. Smith, golfer and cricket player. In 1885, he married Louisa Hawkins, but she died from tuberculosis in 1906. They had two children. He remarried Jean Elizabeth Leckie in 1907, with whom he had three more children. She died in 1940. In 1890, Doyle studied ophthalmology in Vienna, Austria and opened a practice, but had not a single patient, so he continued writing. Growing increasingly tired of writing Sherlock Holmes, he decided to kill off the character, so he could write historical novels, but there was so much public outcry, that he eventually brought him back. Doyle died on July 7, 1930, from a heart attack in Crowborough, East Sussex, England at the age of 71.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great example of an effective polemic By D. D. LeDu Written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published in 1909, "The Crime of the Congo" is a polemic about the horrors of Belgian rule in central Africa. He details, with considerable repetition and vituperativeness, the systematic exploitation of the native peoples by, first, a private monopoly led by King Leopold III and then by the nation of Belgium. The author refers to this period as a crime that was the "greatest which has ever been known in human annals". The system he describes is, in many ways, eerily similar to the Soviet-era Gulag. His book is based on reports by former officials, Christian missionaries, and a report by an investigative commission. Since the purpose was to arouse public indignation, it is more of a diatribe than an historical analysis.Once the reader sets aside his disgust at the system and atrocities described (as well as the polemical manner used by Doyle), there are several observations that can be made. The first is the absolute "inhumanity" that can be shown by humans. Regrettably, Doyle is wrong when he writes that the Congo was a uniquely horrible event. In fact, it was probably no worse than the aforementioned Gulag, the Jewish Holocaust, the Ottoman Armenian atrocities, or the rampages described in the Old Testament - as if despicable evils ever can be comparatively graded. The second is that to be truly atrocious, such events must be either guided by government, or at a minimum be condoned by authorities.A third is that what may at first be benign (or evenly benevolent) can become an unspeakable evil. In the case of the Congo, several events came together: The decision not to levy taxes on the indigenes, but to require labor service in lieu of cash; the decision to allow monopolies in lieu of free trade; and the failure to provide suitable third-party overview, by a the press or other independent body. The fourth is that individuals can easily become agents of evil while self- justifying their descent into despicable horrors, whether it be the lower rung of Belgian rubber monopolies, technocrats in the Nazi bureaucracy, or even native peoples usurped into a morally corrupt system. This is not an enjoyable read; the events it describes are too despicable. But it is valuable for the lessons that can be learned. It is also an example of an effective polemic. I think, though, that it should be read along with other more evenly presented material, and a critical mindset.

An Essay More Than a Book By chica This is a highly readable essay about the Congo and the crimes its people suffered at the hands of its colonial "masters." But be warned that it does not read like a book, but as an essay. It is light on exact descriptions of the horrors. It is an interesting read because it was written when the world was finally paying attention to what had been going on under Leopold's rule and thereafter, and Doyle implicates the world's powerful countries in the destruction of the Congo's people, which I hadn't read before.Definitely worth a read, but don't be expecting a "regular" book, instead it is an impassioned essay/plea.

Unfortunately, the font is now so small it was difficult (at least for me) to enjoy. I might have muscled my way through it, but the descriptions of famous battles are not terribly interesting.

I find that they both suit my style, with Rough Guide being less touristy but also less straightforward to read.I'm heading to South Korea soon, so I opted for this guide because I didn't want to wait a week for the new Lonely Planet guide to come out. What a mistake!Normally Rough Guide offers everything I need to know to get through a trip, but this one doesn't cut it and I haven't even landed in Korea yet. Coverage of Seoul and Busan is lacking, and the maps are not particularly good. I ended up having to buy the LP guide anyway. Sigh.

Have the basic information about Korea like festivals, travel essentials and Food. Also have optional intineraries, basic words in Korean and books recommendations. I definitely love this guide, it's very easy to understand, small but precise and the shipping was very fast ( taking in consideration that I live in Puerto Rico)

The Japan one is pretty thick so I didn't bring it with me during the trip. However, it gave me a lot of good tips, ideas and information for me to plan where to go and how to get information. I liked it so much and that's why I chose to purchase Rough Guide to Korea this year for my Korea trip in March. I was very surprised that the Rough Guide to Korea also included a section for North Korea. I don't intend to visit North Korea for my upcoming trip but it's very interesting reading the section. The Author is well versed in the Asian culture which is evidenced by the fact that he knew the words, "bonsai (Japanese)," "penjing (Chinese), and "bunjae (Korean)." The book tells what are must sees and what can be skipped unless you have extra time. It gives information on cultures, food, and other traveling tips. It also gives you just enough history without boring you out (sorry but I'm bad at remembering old things). In my own travel experience, I'd use the written guide as a "guide" to plan where I want to visit, and I'd look up on the places' official website for special events, operating hours, and admission fees because those can change any time. The maps and transportation methods in the book were good but I used Google Map on my cell phone frequently during my Japan trip which I also intend to do when I visit Korea. The book also suggests local accommodations and restaurants which I'd check the reviews on English travel websites like TripAdvisor.com. For example, I was planning to hike the Mt. Bukhan in Seoul based on the book. However, I decided not to include it on my itinerary after reviewing comments on TripAdvisor because people who are afraid of height (like me) may have vertigo at the peak. Some of the restaurants the book suggested were closed down when I visited Japan, which is not the Author's fault by any means so it's always good to do extra homework. The Korea Guide is not too thick so I do plan to bring it with me to Korea.

It has a rather rushed feel to it, especially towards the end but I still enjoyed it.The main things I took pleasure in were the bicycling which I enjoy doing, several humourous moments, the delightfully tasteful 19th Century interactions with one woman after the other, and the reminder of how people used to be friendly and open to hospitality for strangers back in bygone days.Three stars since it's not a literary masterpiece. It's simple light fun reading to tickle one's fancy.

Kind of a fun read about cycle touring in the early days of the bicycle By D Really a fun short read about a man and his bicycle in the early days of cycling. Part a dating primer and part an adventure book, it has enough to keep most readers interested.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Bicycle of Cathy. By 1975 Camel It is a pleasant book though, seems to be written from a woman's point of view More of a romance than an adventure story. A book written for younger people. Has some woman's rights undertones. It is an easy read and has nice pictures.

When the country of Peru is mentioned, one imagines a peaceful scene of an Andean alpaca grazing along an Incan stone wall. When Ecuador is brought up, we imagine a rain forest panorama of frogs jumping off branches while butterflies mate in the background. When Colombia is mentioned, we envision a post-apocalyptic city full of overturned buses, being pillaged by men in ski masks. It is obvious which country any rational person would seek to avoid while searching for an internet bride. “48,000,000 Colombians Can’t Be Wrong” is a true adventure story about a gringo who travels to Colombia's capital city in search of romance. During his first month in Bogota, Brian falls in with two white, self-assured backpackers who the author describes as, “…not the kind of guys who pump the brakes before going through an uncontrolled intersection.” He is then nearly kidnapped during an encounter with a woman he met online, almost becomes business partners with a Korean man in the “diamond business” and is forced to sleep in the DVD room of his hostel due to lack of funds. Brian quickly regroups after his first month and auditions for the part of “congressional aide” in a Colombian feature film called “Left To Die.” He then lands a job as a writer for an English-language newspaper where his first interview is with a “suspected undercover CIA agent.” Brian then gets thrown off a TV set for refusing to take off his shirt from under his police uniform. While Brian is not getting thrown off TV sets, he marvels at all the discarded construction materials Colombians throw into pot holes to lessen their depths. Because of this strategy, a bus going over one of these open trenches (full of construction materials) will occasionally sling a chest-high brick through a group of panic-stricken pedestrians. Brian sincerely believed this trip would put him on a track towards a life of excitement, intrigue and exotic women, far from his increasing first world debt. Instead, he unexpectedly falls into a job as an extra in a Colombian soap opera, has panic attacks, watches other gringos lose their marbles and blows half his paycheck on bootlegged DVD’s. Along the journey, he chronicles his friendships, the deranged ex-pats he meets, and his struggles/triumphs, including one fateful night in a Israeli restaurant that would change his life forever.
