Nothing is more moving as a tribute than one dedicated to one's family lineage and the valuable wisdom from ancestors. Author William J. Long saw the merit as well in exploring his family tree, especially after his cousin Shelvia requested to know more of their family history. His efforts established this personal family memoir, Survival Lessons, which encompasses life lessons from their family's lineage in the small town of Ash North Carolina. Divided into two parts, each focuses on the author and Shelvia's individual families, and how their lives were impacted by history, family trials and the daily occurrences within their faith-based community. William also does extensive research on the town's past as well, from church establishments to backgrounds on town figures to changes in the community. This book of lineage is to inspire a sense of survival and purpose, realizing God provides and shapes each person through the past.

Who knew the United Nations was a spiritual entity with a “Temple” overlooking the White House; an “Alter” that is a six ton block of rock; a “Spiritual Leader” who practiced Kundalini (serpent power) Yoga; an “Ark of Hope” with mythical unicorn horn handles & pagan symbols; a “Global Ethic” for mankind with “binding values” and “irrevocable standards” to shape our “personal attitudes;” and a written plan for Marxist living in the 21st Century deceptively titled “Sustainable Development – Agenda 21?” On top of that, people and organizations affiliated with the UN have been working on projects called “The Reappearance of the Christ” and “New Genesis!” Was George W. Bush referring to all this when, during his second inaugural address, he said, “When the founders declared a new order of the ages… they were acting on an ancient hope that is meant to be fulfilled?” This book is the result of a six-year research project by Esther Watchmen. It may well be the most explosive study of the century providing the most important information needed by the people of the world today. More than six-billion people are being duped and this story must be told!

In spring 1999 the NATO Alliance launched Operation Allied Force - a sustained 79 day bombing campaign against Serbia. This campaign saw the USAF employ all three types of strategic bombers in its inventory, the B-52H, B-1B and B-2A, with a diversity of guided and unguided ordnance being employed. The purpose of this volume is to describe the operational use of the triad of USAF strategic bombers employed against Serbia. It is not the remit of this volume to discuss the rights and wrongs of the campaign, or give an in depth political or military analysis, although there will, of course, be occasions when politics and ethics emerge in the narration of events. The volume also briefly describes the strategic bomber trio, B-52H, B-1B and B-2A, employed in the campaign, as well as the ordnance dropped, and narrates the strategic bomber roadway from the United States extraction from the Vietnam War in 1973 to the inventory in 1999. Appendices detail the bombers that took part in the operation and the weapons employed. All facts and figures used in the preparation of this volume have come from official source documentation such as the USAF and NATO.

This book is the true story and first-hand account of an Australian woman riding from Austin to Boston in the United States of America with Sustainable Cycles in the summer of 2015. The riders are all women, with no support vehicle, carrying their gear on their bicycles and camping along the way. Written as a journal, the story follows the adventure from pre-trip planning to conclusion. Rosie begins her tour in Austin, Texas. Having never met her fellow riders, she is in for a series of challenges, surprises, and a mixture of hair-raising and heart-warming experiences as she rides across the United States. Along the way, they give workshops on reusable menstrual products, and smash through taboos, stigma and shame. Their goal is presenting at the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. The kindness of strangers keeps them going, and as the kilometres stack up, the riders get closer to Boston, to each other, and ultimately, what it means to be human.

I especially appreciated Sheba's willingness to show her vulnerabilities and honest, candid reflections on the adventure . Her account makes very clear the heart and the grit it takes to do the crucial work of challenging the menstrual status quo! Sheba's narrative shows that passion CAN be channelled into concrete efforts to spread awareness and make sustainable change.

Reissued for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo The first Duke of Wellington's victory at Waterloo in 1815 is remembered as one of our nation's greatest triumphs and, two hundred years on, the 'Iron Duke' is still very much a public figure. But here, Jane Wellesley's family memoir paints an altogether more intimate and compelling portrait. Jane journeys through the past, unearthing memories and secrets to illuminate her family tree. It is a saga peppered with fascinating characters: the 2nd Duke was a full-time eccentric and had his lawnmower pulled by an elephant; the 7th Duke, Jane's grandfather, worked for MI6; and Jane's grandmother's involvement with writer Vita Sackville-West created ripples in the Bloomsbury set as well as her marriage. The Wellesley story shows how Wellington's descendants have lived on in the light of their ancestor's fame, and how a family is so much more than the history of one man.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. An introduction to the Iron Duke By HMS Warspite Elizabeth Longford's "Wellington" is a very short introductory life of the First Duke of Wellington. It is derivative of her full-length biographies of Wellington and Queen Victoria but manages to be solidly informative without being overwhelming. Longford, in highly readable prose, provides a fast moving survey of the military and political life of Arthur Wellesley, weaving in the kinds of personal details that hang a more human face on a man and a time much mythologized. This work is clearly intended for the general reader; serious students of the Duke should track down Longford's two volume biography ("Years of the Sword" and "Pillar of the State"). Those looking for a detailed military biography should also seek elsewhere; this volume only lightly skims the surface of Wellington's long military career. This is the kind of book a serious student of Wellington provides as an introduction to the subject to his less serious friends and relatives.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent account By Terry Wieland As the sequel to Longford's "Wellington: The Years of the Sword," this covers the remaining 40 years of Wellington's life after Waterloo. Although the accounts of political life are not as exciting as either the Peninsular Wars or Waterloo itself, and one needs to do extra research to learn about the other characters involved, it is a fine account of English political life and the development of the British Empire from 1815 to 1855.

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Terrible abridged edition By Luis H. Ball This is an absurdly abridged edition of Elizabeth Lonford's magnificent biography of the Iron Duke. The 1,400 pages of the original two volumes have been abridged to one tenth of their original length. The result is a book that maybe could be useful for children in elementary school. I own a one-volume abridged paper back version published in England and it runs over 500 pages. Avoid this edition, but do look for the original two volume version. You will not be disappointed.

Bill Beckham describes how Jesus used groups of different sizes and relationships (three, twelve, seventy, and one hundred and twenty at Pentecost) to fulfill his global purpose. Beckham demonstrates how we need to relearn Christ's same relational strategy to plant churches and win a lost world for Jesus Christ. Beckham shows how many churches today have allowed an Old Testament theology to dictate their ecclesiology. He then offers practical advice and clear direction to return to the original way to live Church as an expansion movement, like Jesus did. In this book Beckham shows how the Cell Church Movement is God's answer to take the church back to a place of fruitfulness and effectiveness.

The value of this short read is that you get what the contemporary scholar thought about Franco-Prussian war. A lot of concepts, such as federation of nations (or United Nations), abandon of war as a way to solve dispute, etc., are passionately argued in this book. All in all, old concepts stand, and the passion of human beings remains, while the ultimate goal still yet to achieve.

By hilpin Cycling the Mekong is a fascinating story about one man's bicycle journey through Southeast Asia. As an avid traveler I really appreciated Daly's personal narrative. His vivid descriptions of small villages and large cities brought me immediately back to the region and fueled my desire to return and explore further. I could hear the noise and chaos of Khaosan Road and feel the tranquility of Sapa through Daly's writing. The book is well researched and has stunning photographs. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure, stories of personal growth, or is planning to visit South East Asia!

They totally reflect the feel By Pat Swinton Having been to some of these places and not others, I think it is really accurate in the descriptions. Of course all I remember is the intense heat and humidity but the photographs are really amazing. They totally reflect the feel of these places .... the noise and swarms of people. And of course, Asia isn't the same without street food. I think the book is great - and would be great for anyone who can identify with thesights, sound and smells of Southeast Asia.

Enjoyable but not what I expected By John While an easy read and somewhat enjoyable I would have to say that the book really should have been published as a blog. Unless you have never bike toured and or never dipped a toe into Asia there is very little you will learn about planning your own bike tour of Asia. Gerry gives accounts of his own blunders, route finding misadventures and stories of alternate transportation (planes, trains, bus and boat). At times it sounds like he bit off more than he could chew, but give him credit. He got it done. His adventure does not sound like one you would want to replicate.

It’s early in the 13th century and the Church is under attack. On the Continent and in England Dominican Inquisitors are seeking out heretics. Scarred by memories of the Inquisition’s power, Edric Bigge decides to leave his home in Aldinoch and travel to France where he will paint beautiful murals on its great cathedrals. Just as he settle into a life that promises happiness, he finds himself up against his old foe, Bishop Hugo, who’s been called to Paris to try a young noble woman for heresy. After months in the dungeon beneath l’Eglise du Notre Dame des Pauvres, Isabella du Forez is too weak and disheartened to hope for freedom. Her attempt to escape a forced marriage and create a life of her own has ended in disaster. Now her only goal is to find a way to die before she faces the Inquisition’s flames. But once he learns of her fate, Edric refuses to abandon Isabella to a Church that has strayed so far from the teachings of Christ. In “The Hounds of God” Church politics, society’s restrictions on the lives of women and the power of art collide. But is there really a way Edric and his allies can save Isabella? And will Edric succeed at preventing Bishop Hugo from visiting his fatal powers on others ever again.

Young love is exciting but apparently comes with heavy doses of responsibility in the 13th century! And may involve sleeping in trees. A really intriguing follow-up to the first book, and it makes me look forward to the next in the Aldinoch series. There are some intriguing questions left open about the fate of Inquisitors, the three 'orphans', their travels, their faith, and their loves.

By Joey I was gifted the first book in this series by the author when I was going through some health issues and had a lot of down time. I loved it and was happy then to buy this second book to find out the rest of the story. I was not disappointed. It starts off pretty much where the first book left off and once again we are transported to 13th century England and watching our three favourite characters continue their lives. I won't go into detail because I think it's something that needs to be read to fully enjoy!Once again though, Edric finds himself up against the "Hounds Of God" and wants to find a way to stop them, so it seems his story is the main theme of the book. There were parts that made me cheer, other parts that made me sigh and others that I cried at. The book is well written, excellently crafted and you can tell just how much research Bogen has done to make the book as authentic as possible. It's a lovely story and should there be a third in the series, I will be anxious to read that one too! Overall an excellent book with a lot of surprising twists and turns. I think I have found a new author who's work I will buy and read without question! Highly recommended!

By John Walker A historical novel depends on strong characters as well as a well-depicted milieu to open the eyes of readers to an understanding of a world far different from their own. This novel has both. The personages are so sharply defined that the reader remembers each one easily as the novel jumps back and forth along the story line. And the descriptions are so full of life-like detail using all of the senses that the reader is immersed into a world that can be felt, heard, and smelled, as well as seen. For example, the depiction of making artist's paints is remarkable in itself, and gets added quality from its hinted symbolism. A super novel.

This travel narrative is a light-hearted romp through filming locations for the series ‘Outlander’ and then on into the Highlands, by a New Zealander who cannot get enough of Scotland. In May 2015 Jenny leaves from Auckland for Edinburgh and then daily records her trip as she drives herself around, following her impulses and the meandering roads of her ancestral home. Follow her, as she ‘Follows Claire’, the protagonist of Diana Gabaldon’s ‘Outlander’, who went through standing stones in 1945 to find herself in the Highlands in 1743. Some of this story is devoted to revisiting the filming locations for the series, and recounting the fun of a UK Outlander Gathering that happened in Crieff. The rest of the narrative is a humorous account of her daily impressions of the Highlands and Outer Hebrides from the point of view of a New Zealander cast adrift on that far distant shore.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful tour of Scotland By Jackie Campbell This book was written by a bright and entertaining Kiwi lass known for her "Outrageous Outlander" memes on Twitter and Facebook. Somewhat familiar with her sense of humor, I followed her on Twitter during her trip and was impressed by the planning and adventurous spirit she displayed in short tweets. I knew, as a woman who was single and traveled alone for most of my adulthood, I would enjoy and relate to her stories. Little did I know! I found this book to be a delight; a detailed description of a trip through Scotland that I would love to take myself but probably will not be able to do. Every sight and area was beautifully described and I felt as if I traveled by her side. The photos were plentiful to back up the text. This is a great book for those of us who yearn for Scotland but cannot either physically or financially do it now. When I can, I hope to follow in her footsteps. Maybe I will run into Jenny on her next trip.

I am so pleased have read it that I am immediately returning it as a Kindle Unlimited free selection and purchasing my own copy. I have thoroughly enjoyed your memes and tweets in the past, and seeing your lovely photos in this text I can't help wanting to buy it for myself-!Cheers!

I followed Jenny's blog last year as she undertook this adventurous journey around ethereal, majestic Scotland and was delighted with the additional material she saved for this book. Her love for Scotland and for Diana Gabaldon's OUTLANDER Series, are well known and her OUTLANDER memes are legendary. Jenny's delightful, light-hearted prose and breath-taking photographs of Scotland's incredible beauty and variety made me feel like I had gone back in time with her to experience this fabulous trip, and OUTLANDER's highly anticipated tv debut, all over again. Thank you, Jenny! I'm available to go back to Scotland any time...

Download Ebook PDF West Meets East in Kazakhstan: Life in and Around Almaty, Kazakhstan, in the 1990's from the Perspective of an American Expat, by Thomas E. Johnson

The author gained considerable experience of working in countries in the Soviet sphere in the 1980s-Yugoslavia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary-but this did little to prepare him for a long-term stint in Kazakhstan, commencing at the outset of 1993. If his eyes were opened wide in Belgrade, Warsaw, Prague, and Budapest, they were bug-eyed in Almaty, Kazakhstan. There he keenly experienced the harshness and wonders of post-Soviet Kazakhstan. The good news is that Tom Johnson wrote a series of articles for a local English language newspaper, The Almaty Herald, detailing his observations about life in and around Almaty in the 1990s from the perspective of an American expatriate. West Meets East in Kazakhstan is based on those articles, to which the author has added substantial new material. With wry humor, a positive attitude, and an easy-to-read writing style, the author recounts the gentle and not-so-gentle culture shock that he experienced. It is difficult to describe the book's content. Each chapter stands by itself and might be devoted to such topics as the following: the heavy weight of documentation required by the bureaucracy, the peculiar habit of carrying flowers with the wet ends up and the flowers down, the lack of public gathering places, or the outlandish nature of goodbye parties for departing expatriates. Several chapters describe the author's forages into the countryside to visit lakes, waterfalls, burial mounds, and “singing” dunes. West Meets East in Kazakhstan makes a good read for anyone interested in life and living conditions in Kazakhstan, as well as the former Soviet Union. Foreigners who lived or worked in Kazakhstan during the period when the Communist economy was collapsing and before the market economy took root should particularly enjoy the book.

West Meets East in Kazakhstan: Life in and Around Almaty, Kazakhstan, in the 1990's from the Perspective of an American Expat, by Thomas E. Johnson

About the Author As the first lawyer to set up the office of an international law firm in Kazakhstan, Tom Johnson experienced firsthand the chaotic years after disintegration of the Soviet Union, the collapse of the command economy, and the start of the open market economy. For several years he contributed articles to the weekly English-language newspaper The Almaty Herald, many of which are collected in this book. Tom grew up in South Dakota. He obtained his bachelor's degree at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and his doctor of law degree from Harvard Law School. Before coming to Almaty, Tom practiced law in New York City and London. He now lives in England with his wife and daughter.

The Ethics of Aristotle is one half of a single treatise of which his Politics is the other half. Both deal with one and the same subject. This subject is what Aristotle calls in one place the "philosophy of human affairs;" but more frequently Political or Social Science. In the two works taken together we have their author's whole theory of human conduct or practical activity, that is, of all human activity which is not directed merely to knowledge or truth. The two parts of this treatise are mutually complementary, but in a literary sense each is independent and self-contained. The proem to the Ethics is an introduction to the whole subject, not merely to the first part; the last chapter of the Ethics points forward to the Politics, and sketches for that part of the treatise the order of enquiry to be pursued (an order which in the actual treatise is not adhered to).

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Our Common Humanity By John R Graves This is just basic ideas that are the foundation of our civilization. Aristotle makes observations about our lives and government that should be noted in any political discussion. Logic and having common ground in the use of words makes for a sane and important exchange of ideas. He takes an overview of how we live together and writes about the basic building blocks of society and government. He writes about households and how all is connected in a way that no one is isolated and not important. There is a wholeness that is refreshing. He uses a language common to us all. It is about how we are connected to one another. He has no political axe to grind in our modern day political debates and offers suggestions to lead us to higher ground.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Pure Philosophy By Caleb Aristotle's philosophy may be the most important work ever published. However, this format is a little hard to digest for the layman merely interested in learning more about it.
