It was the greatest armoured clash in the history of the world - and the decisive battle of World War II. Two vast armies engaged one another on land and in the air, in a conflict that included the most costly single day of aerial warfare of all time. This was the battle of Kursk - a battle so terrible that even Hitler confessed it made his ‘stomach turn over’. Citadel was the last great German offensive on the Eastern Front; its aim was to claw back the initiative after the surrender of the Sixth Army at Stalingrad in January 1943. The location chosen by Hitler was the Kursk salient in the heartland of the Ukraine. The date was 5 July 1943, the codename ‘Citadel’. The Red Army, warned of the German plans by the ‘Lucy’ spy network in Switzerland, was prepared to defend the salient in massive strength and depth. Against its breakwaters Hitler launched his finest armoured divisions, only to see them mangled beyond repair. No sooner had the German thrusts been contained, while within the tantalizing grasp of success, than the Red Army delivered a series of crushing counter-blows with were to drive the Wehrmacht back beyond the River Dnieper. Characteristically, Hitler had gambled all on a throw of a single dice and had lost the initiative in the East - never to regain it. 'Citadel' provides a detailed picture of the Battle of Kursk, from the strategic tug-of-war waged within both high commands in the agonizing months which preceded the German offensive, to the first-hand experiences of the troops on the ground and the airmen flying over the blazing steppe as the battle reached fever pitch. Robin Cross places the battle firmly within the wider strategic context of the spring and summer of 1943, months in which Hitler and Stalin steeled themselves to take decisions which would decide the course of the war and the shape of the peace which followed. Praise for 'Fallen Eagle': "Mesmerising account of those final, bloody weeks of war ... Cross's account of the final hysterical days in his Berlin Bunker is masterful." Sunday Express Robin Cross is a distinguished journalist and military historian whose books include VE Day: Victory in Europe, The Bombers: Strategy and Tactics and The US Marine Corps. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Worlds Largest Tank Battle Kursk By matt8386 Operation Citadel - The Battle of Kursk - the greatest tank battle ever fought in terms of numbers, ferocity and importance. July 1943 was the last chance for the Germans to knock the Russians out of the war and rather than rely on surprise or sleight of hand, they went for the most obvious place of all - the Kursk salient.Tipped off by Ultra, the US/British decoding of German ciphers, the Soviets amassed huge amounts of men, materials, tanks, artillery, mines, AT guns, building a layered defense in depth. Add to this the Soviet Air Force, which was on a par with the Luftwaffe by then and you have an all or nothing battle for both sides. Even if the Germans had managed to win, it would have been pyrrhic, the German losses would have been too much to do much more than delay the war.Robin Cross wrote this book in 1993, so he did not have the advantage of access to Soviet material. That is one downside to this book, (hence four stars) however, it is a fair book and gives credit to the Soviets where due. Cross examines the roles of each Dictator prior to and during the battle, the Generals of both sides as well as analysis of the weapons of both sides. The failure of the Germans to destroy the Red Army at Kursk meant that the Germans would be forced to retreat, never again to launch a major offensive on the Eastern Front. Local counter attacks were to prevent major breakthroughs and catastrophes. This is an excellent book for armor students, serious history buffs. It's a very good high level review of what happened, the reasons, the action and the consequences.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Well written, good reading but incomplete. By A Customer A good description of the battle, particularly from the German side. This is one of the four major battles that decided the outcome of WW2. I beleive it falls down in its description of Soviet defenses which ground the Wehrmacht down. These defenses played a large role in German defeat that appears largely unrecorded.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A very well-written description of a crucial event during the war. By Erik Larsen A thourough description of the turning-point of the war. It gives a very detailed lot of information of both sides of the battle and it includes also the political aspect, which is just as important as the military. It is also well written and the language used is easily understood and also correct seen from a military point of view.

Over their first four decades in the American League, the Cleveland Indians were known more for great players than consistently great play. Its rosters filled with all-time greats like Cy Young, Nap Lajoie, Elmer Flick, Tris Speaker, and the ill-fated Addie Joss and Ray Chapman, Cleveland often found itself in the thick of the race but, with 1920 the lone exception, seemed always to finish a game or two back in the final standings.

In the 10 years that followed the end of World War II, however, the franchise turned the corner. Led by owner (and world-class showman) Bill Veeck, the boy-manager Lou Boudreau, ace Bob Feller, and the barrier-busting Larry Doby, Cleveland charged up the standings, finishing in the first division every season but one and winning it all in 1948.

This meticulously researched history covers the Indians' first six decades, from their minor league origins at the end of the 19th century to the dismantling of the 1954 World Series club. It is a story of unforgettable players, frustrated hopes, and two glorious victories that fed a city's unwavering devotion to its team.

The medieval fortified town of Carcassonne is one of the most visited cities in France. There are ski resorts and spas throughout this area, as well as innumerable historic sites and monuments. Coverage extends from Languedoc-Rouissillon and Aquitaine in France to Spanish Catelonia, Aragon, and Navarre.

Ancient cathedrals abound, and the church in the tiny village of Rennes le Chateau is thought to have been visited by Mary Magdalene and to be where the Holy Grail is hidden. By contrast, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is one of the most unusual churches in the world with its melting sand-castle appearance and odd bubble-shaped spires.

At Cap d'Agde, also known as Naked City and the world's mecca of nudism, visitors can bank, shop, or beachcomb in the buff. Tourists delight in the vast selection of mountain-climbing destinations, ski resorts, spa villages, Gallo-Roman ruins, and prehistoric cave paintings in the region. Some of the best food in all of Europe is found in this part of France where black truffles, cassoullet, Roquefort cheese, and Bordeaux wine all originated.

On the Spanish side of the range, Catelonia is marked by breathtaking cliffs, expanses of beaches, and the thriving, hip seaside city of Barcelona. In the Navarre region, men taunt large, dangerous animals for Pamplona's annual Running of the Bulls.

The authors guide us through every corner of this fascinating region, where they have spent much of their time over many years.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Should be in the Glove Box! By Manaus If you are travelling in this area, this book is a must! It gives so much detail about the geography, history, food, wine and people that it is indispensable. Plus, it is a very good read, written in a relaxed but informative style as though you are having a conversation with another person on the side of the road or in a cafe. As well as the basic information there are these delightful "Author's Tip" which gives all sorts of extremely useful advice that you would normally get only late at night over a good bottle of red. Yes, some of it is known to seasoned travellers, such as hiring cars in towns, not airports, but that does not detract from the huge wealth of information provided to the traveller. whether they be on worldwide tours when time is limited, or on an extended driving vacation. The author gives the best times to visit, information on customs, etc etc and there is information here on small towns and villages that is very hard to find. They suggest accommodation and restaurants, cafes and places of interest. You could wander around this fabulous area and just read about towns on the map that "may" be interesting. This book is fantastic.

"And this is Kieff!" Thus spoke to himself a young man named Yosef Shvarts, on entering the ancient city, when, roused by toll-gate formalities, he saw himself unexpectedly among buildings and streets. The heart quivered in him joyfully. He was young, he was rushing forward to life; and so he drew into his large lungs as much fresh air as he could find place for, and repeated with a gladsome smile,— "And this is Kieff!"

An inauspicious debut By Karl Janssen According to the brief introduction by translator Jeremiah Curtin, In Vain was the first published novel by Nobel Laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz, written when he was only 18 years old. Originally published in 1876 under the Polish title of Na marne, Curtin’s English edition did not come out until 1899, after Sienkiewicz had achieved some worldwide renown as the author of romantic epics like Quo Vadis and “The Trilogy” (With Fire and Sword, The Deluge, and Pan Wolodyjowski). In Vain is no epic, but it is definitely romantic, in the 19th-century sense of the word. Curtin describes the book as a portrait of student life, and that’s certainly how it starts out, but not how it ends.A young man named Yosef Shvarts (Curtin always opts for phonetic spellings of Polish proper nouns) arrives in Kiev to attend school. He runs into an old hometown friend, Gustav, and the two decide to room together. Yosef is the son of a blacksmith, so although he is lucky to be able to attend school, money is scarce and he must live frugally. The two friends hang out at a student club with a group of schoolmates who share their bohemian lifestyle. Gustav is in love with Helena, an attractive widow who has been traumatized by the death of her husband and child. Upon meeting Yosef, however, she immediately becomes obsessed with him because he reminds her of her deceased husband. Needless to say, this doesn’t sit well with Gustav and causes a great deal of tension between the two roommates.Meanwhile, Yosef falls in love with science and studies to become a doctor, but that element of the narrative is neglected in favor of the love story. The novel harkens back to an earlier and far more conservative age when kissing a woman was as good as a marriage proposal (although at times it’s hinted, ever so subtly, that there’s more than just kissing going on). Men of a certain class were expected to conduct themselves honorably in all things, like the knights of old. To play games with a woman’s virtue would spell the end of one’s reputation as a gentleman. Under such restrictive conventions of romance, Yosef finds himself in a quandary between love and duty. The first half of the book is very engaging. The depiction of student life in Kiev is interesting, and the characters and their relationships are intriguing. Eventually, however, the novel regresses into a rather formulaic he-loves-me, he-loves-me-not story, reminiscent of some of the fairy tale romances that are more at home in Sienkiewicz’s historical epics. The character of Augustinovich, a friend and confidant of Yosef’s, even resembles The Trilogy’s Falstaffian character Pan Zagloba in his sense of humor, his gregariousness, and his propensity for meddling in others’ love lives. In Vain is not a terrible book, but it may be the worst piece of work I’ve ever read from this excellent author. Only diehard fans of Sienkiewicz should give this one a try.

I WAS A WITNESS TO THE SINKING OF THE BISMARCK!! Ray Lock was an eye-witness to the sinking of the German battleship, Bismarck. In these memoirs recalls details of this epic battle, as well as many other memoirs from his fascinating life. Bismarck, Dorsetshire and Memories is another good book, produced privately, that we are fortunate to be able to read and learn more about a sailor’s war. A very well presented book, nicely printed, good quality photographs and most of all very interesting. from Warship World Ray Lock, a South African, tried to join the South African Air Force at the age of 16 as a pilot. Told he would have to wait, he like many others went to a service that would take him, then and there. He thought the war would be over by the time he allowed to join the air force. Joining the Royal Navy instead, he had in fact lots of time to get involved in some well known and some lesser, but equally important actions. Throughout this book is packed with detail and without doubt will prove of interest to those who like the nitty, gritty of Naval Life. The author served on DORSETSHIRE, prior to the BISMARCK action for some time and until the ships loss in the Indian Ocean, where he was wounded Both CORNWALL and DORSETSHIRE were sunk by Japanese aircraft attack. The survivors, many wounded, including Mr Lock, were then machine gunned in the water. Sighted by an aircraft, the group was rescued by HM Ships ENTERPRISE, PANTHER and he was personally picked up by PALADIN. After extensive recovery time in hospital Mr Lock was selected for Officer Training, after which he was seconded again to the Royal Navy. Further service in small craft including HDMLs in the Mediterranean with even more operational diversity concluded the author’s war. This is another good book, produced privately, that we are fortunate to be able to read and learn more about a sailor’s war. This one is beautifully presented. From Warship World “I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the rich and varied life of the author, including being an eye-witness to the sinking of the Bismarck. Young readers will be especially interested and fascinated by Ray’s well-written experiences from an earlier generation….and the horrors of war. A most revealing, interesting and excellent read!” PPS “But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea Also available in paperback at CreateSpace eStore: https://www.createspace.com/5114787 And https://www.createspace.com/4331896

Bismarck, Dorsetshire and Memories: I was a Witness to the Sinking of the Bismarck!, by Ray Lock

About the Author FOR many of us World War II occupies a distant place in history, far removed from our every day lives, yet immortalised for a generation who paid heavily for the price of freedom. For Durban North’s Ray Lock, the recent publication of his book Bismarck, Dorsetshire and Memories, is a recollection of events documenting his eyewitness account to one of the major historical events in WW II that has rightly found a place in historical archives. In 1939, at the tender age of 16, Ray, eager not to miss the action of WW II, falsified his age by two years and managed to enlist as a seaman for the Royal Navy. After spending a couple of months undergoing military training at the Natal Command in Durban, Ray was assigned as a crewmember aboard the battleship, the Dorsetshire. His book is an eyewitness account of the events that led to the sinking of the Dorsetshire on 5 April 1942. Penny Tsepouras from the NorthGlen News

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lang at ease By Christopher (o.d.c.) Published 1891.The topics range fromAlexandre Dumas, Mr. Stevenson's works, Homer and the Study of Greek, The Last Fashionable Novel, Thackeray, Dickens,toAdventures of Buccaneers, The Sagas, Charles Kingsley, etc, etc.Who but myself has a taste for old essays? I hadn't even heard of Andrew Lang before I started searching for "essays" in the Kindle store. These essays are fine- almost boyish in their enthusiasm and playfulness- "The Last Fashionable Novel" is a mash up of Ouida and James Fenimore Cooper, the point of which I'm sure I missed- but I still liked the parody. His essays of Buccaneers and Sagas- well, who but an overgrown boy would write essays on buccaneers and sagas?:".. For the wise world, which reads newspapers all day and half the night, does not care much for books, still less for good books, least of all for old books. You can make no money out of reading Sagas: they have nothing to say about stocks and shares, nor about Prime Ministers and politics. Nor will they amuse a man, if nothing amuses him but accounts of races and murders, or gossip about Mrs. Nokes's new novel, Mrs. Stokes's new dresses, or Lady Jones's diamonds. The Sagas only tell how brave men--of our own blood very likely--lived, and loved, and fought, and voyaged, and died, before there was much reading or writing, when they sailed without steam, travelled without railways, and warred hand-to-hand, not with hidden dynamite and sunk torpedoes. But, for stories of gallant life and honest purpose, the Sagas are among the best in the world."

The Wall, certainly, but also the legendary Trabant, emblem of an entire country. The queues in front of the shops, the May Day parades, the endless and lengthy postwar reconstruction. And then there was the punk scene with its young rebels, the widespread practice of nudism, the excursions in the romantic countryside of classical German literature. East Germany, the country that imploded in the recent history of Europe, was a combination of those images, sensations, and inferences that Augusto Bordato, a sensitive connoisseur of Germany's recent history, collected during the many years he spent in East Berlin, both before andafter the Wall fell.
