By Amazon Customer This was a new author to me although she died long ago. I was shocked at what a superior quality of writing she had compared to her American counterparts during the same period of history. She writes with a depth of subtle nuances and captures characters using more subtlety. I will from now on seek out Annie Swan's writing because of its beauty and depth

The enemy has been very busy, since he got kicked out of the Garden and out of Heaven.

How better to prevent mankind from entering Heaven than to pervert the Word of God through mixing holy and unholy doctrines?

From the Back Cover Originally a pamphlet published in 1853, The Two Babylons is Hislop's most famous work. In this book he argues that the Roman Catholic Church is nothing more than pagan cult, with roots in Babylonian mystery cults, which have a bank of secret knowledge only available to those who have been formally accepted into the cult.

Roman Catholics, Hislop argues, are descendants from early Christians who adopted the Roman religion descended from the worship of Semiramis, the wife of the founder of Babylon. By discrediting the true Christianity of Catholics, Hislop hoped to bolster the legitimacy of the Protestant and Scottish Reformations.

Students of theology and those interested in the complex history of Christianity will find Hislop's arguments provocative enough that they may be moved to further research of their own.

Eye Opener By A Customer After reading this book and checking out the reliability of the information it contains, I have changed many of my traditions and religious beliefs. It is truly frightening to see how our eyes are blinded by the accepted religious traditions and we do things that are truly unacceptable to our Creator. I found the numerous descriptions of the origins of our religious icons to be fascinating and enlightening. Any person who is truly interested in pure, clean worship of our Creator MUST read this book.

Not an easy read but definately a wealth of information. I think the author retracted for reasons other than poor research methods. I think he retracted his work for the same reasons many other controversial books are pulled from publication. I was born and raised Catholic and to this day the priests still wear the attire worn by Ancient Dagon Priests. The Pope also uses the same instruments used by Ancient Pagan Priests affiliated with Babylonian Religion. There are many more similarities that are just too hard to ignore. I know it's a tough pill to swallow when you've been spoon fed this nonsense for years but it's pretty obvious. Catholics eat fish on Friday in honor of Dagon (Pagan Fish God). I mean folks if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it just might be......... you guessed it. Let's use some common sense, remember common sense????

However, with a little persistence you too can get through this book. This book is certainly controversial, especially in our politically correct society where it is a no-no to criticize anyone or anyone's beliefs. This book compares Roman Catholicism with ancient Pagan Beliefs (primarily Babylonian and Egyptian). It's true you cannot make a direct connection of the two belief systems but the similarities are definitely there for anyone with an OPEN mind to see. Any visitor to the Vatican can see the pagan symbology staring them straight in the face. However, most people would rather bury their heads in the sand than confront the pagan origins of many of today's so-called christian traditions. They fail to consider that if the Bible was their ONLY source for religion, then Christmas, Easter, Sunday Worship, the Trinity, Halloween, and Lent would fall by the wayside since these are not of Biblical origin but man-made traditions and beliefs. Truth is the beginning of knowledge. I would rate this book 5 stars if it were easier to read.

"[...]they are the real natural hitters of the game, the men with eyes nice enough and accurate enough to take a long wallop at the ball. “Dan” Brouthers was one, and so was “Cap” Anson. Sherwood Magee and “Hans” Wagner are contemporary free swingers. Men of this type wield a heavy bat as if it were a toothpick and step back and forth in the box, hitting the ball on any end of the plate. Sometimes it is almost impossible to pass a man of this sort purposely, for a little carelessness in getting the ball too close to the plate may result in his stepping up and hitting it a mile. Pitchers have been searching for Wagner’s “groove” for years, and, if any one of them has[...]".

Spy, adventurer, charismatic seductress and mistress of two of the century’s greatest writers, the Russian aristocrat Baroness Moura Budberg was born in 1892 to indulgence, pleasure and selfishness. But after she met the British diplomat and secret agent Robert Bruce Lockhart, she sacrificed everything for love, only to be betrayed. When Lockhart arrived in Revolutionary Russia in 1918, his official mission was Britain’s envoy to the new Bolshevik government, yet his real assignment was to create a network of agents and plot the downfall of Lenin. Lockhart soon got to know Moura and they began a passionate affair, even though Moura was spying on him for the Bolsheviks. But when Lockhart’s plot unravelled, she would forsake everything in an attempt to protect him from Lenin’s secret police. Fleeing to a life of exile in England and taking a string of new lovers, including Maxim Gorky and H. G. Wells, Moura later spied for Stalin and for Britain amidst the web of scandal surrounding the Cambridge spies. Through all this she clung to the hope that Lockhart would finally return to her.Grippingly narrated, this is the first biography of Moura Budberg to use the full range of previously unexamined letters, diaries and documents. An incredible true story of passion, espionage and double crossing that encircled the globe, A Very Dangerous Woman brings her extraordinary world vividly to life with dramatic resonances to rival the most sensational novel.

Review "McDonald and Dronfield convincingly capture Moura's perilous sensuality."— The Wall Street Journal"Temptress, seductress, sexploiter, call her what you will, Moura had espionage running through her veins, and all is revealed in this fascinating account of her mysterious life."— Nigel West, author of Operation Garbo"A thrilling new biography of baroness and double agent Moura Budberg…. Brave and multi-faceted, a mosaic monument to a mistress of deceit."— Russia Beyond the Headlines"An astoundingly unbelievable life well retold in this gripping new biography. Well written, too. The book’s account of the Lockhart Affair is particularly fascinating, recreating the paranoid, anti-Western world that was Soviet Russia in the late 19-teens and early 1920s."— Russian Life"The authors draw on diaries, correspondence, and newly released files to create a powerful study that attracts sympathy toward their subject. It also produces a great snapshot of life in Russia during the collapse of the czarist regime through the early part of the Joseph Stalin era. Recommended for fans of espionage and strong-willed women as well as biography connoisseurs."— Library Journal"A fast-paced story of European intrigue, featuring an enigmatic, strong-willed woman who married twice and whose lovers included Alexander Kerensky, Maxim Gorky, and H.G. Wells.... Moura’s survival story is fascinating."— Publishers Weekly"An attempt to introduce the world to a female spy far more successful than Mata Hari and just as captivating.... Intriguing."— Kirkus Reviews"A Very Dangerous Woman pulls together all the chimerical threads of Moura’s life into a well-written and carefully annotated biography that often reads like a romantic thriller – with photos of all the key real-life characters. I’d recommend it to anyone, especially those interested in the Russian Revolution, its soiled aftermath, or the elusive Moura.”—Historical Novels Review"An absorbing and colourful account of the individuals and events that changed the world in the first half of the twentieth century."— Susan Ottaway, author Sisters, Secrets and Sacrifice: The True Story of WWII Special Agents Eileen and Jacqueline Nearne

Worthwhile read By buskerman I gave it 4 stars -- Based on the fact that I never five star a book that I read only when I have time verses a five star book I make time for.The story was well told but since the dangerous woman was also secretive I found to much conjecture. If she was in the area she probably had done it -- It was rumored that she was this, did that. For me to much guessing and summation as to what she did. with no positive proof other thanif it looks like a duck and so on to the desired answer to fit the legend .The description of the Russian revolution is superb and draws the reader into the upheavaland living it along with the characters in the book . Also life in Europe between the world warsis a interesting expose of the rich and famous , their women / men and the hanger ons who followed them. The authors did their research well and made an interesting story with the facts that were available .I don’t think a better picture can be painted of her life than was written here. There are some stories your sad that they end , this is one of those stories .

Lots of information and historical facts about life in Europe(mostly Great Britain and Estonia) and Russia during the 20s and into the 70s. This book is hard to put down but certainly a step above the adventurous spy stories that you normally finish in a weekend. Not necessarily a world masterpiece, so no 5 stars, but highly recommend to those who like history and literature, as there is a lot of information on H. G. Wells and Gorkii.

I have read other books Gary has written and have learned much about Francis Drake and his stay in Nehalem bay and was amazed at what Gary has found as he explored the area himself. So if your interested in history, this book will fill in a lot of blank areas, and show the determination early pioneer's and explorer's had to settle a new land.

Demosthenes, the son of Demosthenes of Paeania in Attica, a rich and highly respected factory-owner, was born in or about the year 384 B.C. He was early left an orphan; his guardians mismanaged his property for their own advantage; and although, soon after coming of age in 366, he took proceedings against them and was victorious in the law-courts, he appears to have recovered comparatively little from them. In preparing for these proceedings he had the assistance of Isaeus, a teacher and writer of speeches who was remarkable for his knowledge of law, his complete mastery of all the aspects of any case with which he had to do, and his skill in dealing with questions of ownership and inheritance. Demosthenes' speeches against his guardians show plainly the influence of Isaeus, and the teacher may have developed in his pupil the thoroughness and the ingenuity in handling legal arguments which afterwards became characteristic of his work. Apart from this litigation with his guardians, we know little of Demosthenes' youth and early manhood. Various stories have come down to us (for the most part not on the best authority), of his having been inspired to aim at an orator's career by the eloquence and fame of Callistratus; of his having overcome serious physical defects by assiduous practice; of his having failed, nevertheless, owing to imperfections of delivery, in his early appearances before the people, and having been enabled to remedy these by the instruction of the celebrated actor Satyrus; and of his close study of the History of Thucydides. Upon the latter point the evidence of his early style leaves no room for doubt, and the same studies may have contributed to the skill and impressiveness with which, in nearly every oration, he appeals to the events of the past, and sums up the lessons of history. Whether he came personally under the influence either of Plato, the philosopher, or of Isocrates, the greatest rhetorical teacher of his time, and a political pamphleteer of high principles but little practical insight, is much more doubtful. The two men were almost as different in temperament and aims as it was possible to be, but Demosthenes' familiarity with the published speeches of Isocrates, and with the rhetorical principles which Isocrates taught and followed, can scarcely be questioned.

1st Place Winner in Category, 2013 Chatelaine Awards Romantic Fiction In this thrilling and sensual adaptation of the classic love story, Elizabeth Bennet and the citizens of Hertfordshire know Fitzwilliam Darcy to be a proud, unpleasant sort of man, but they never suspect the dark secret of his true nature. He is not a man at all - but a vampire. When the haughty and wealthy Fitzwilliam Darcy arrives in the rural county of Hertfordshire, he finds he cannot control his attraction to Elizabeth Bennet - a horrifying thought because, as she is too far below his social standing to ignite his heart, he fears she must appeal to the dark impulses he struggles to suppress. Set against the vivid backdrop of historical Regency England, this adaptation of Pride and Prejudice follows the cursed Mr. Darcy as he endeavours to overcome both his love and his bloodlust for Miss Elizabeth Bennet. Although Pulse and Prejudice adheres to the original plot and style of the Jane Austen classic, it is not a "mash-up" but an imaginative, thrilling variation told primarily from Mr. Darcy's point of view as he descends into the seedier side of London and introduces Elizabeth to a world of passion and the paranormal she never knew existed. Pulse and Prejudice has been meticulously researched for historical accuracy and remains faithful to nineteenth century literary conventions and Miss Austen's narrative. The author spent fifteen months traveling to Britain and researching Regency England, as well as vampire lore and literature. In the few instances in which the plots overlap, excerpts from canon have been expertly woven in so that prior knowledge of Pride and Prejudice is not required for full enjoyment of this remarkable novel.

Pulse and Prejudice: The Confession of Mr Darcy, Vampire, by Colette L. Saucier

Review "I recommend this book whole heartedly. This is a good re-telling, gripping and entertaining without being outrageous."  - Austen Prequels and Sequels "I cannot express enough how skeptical I was upon starting this book. Pride and Prejudice with a touch of vampires was enough to send me into fits of eye rolls. But, within only the first chapter, I found myself strangely drawn to the story. The vampire Darcy weaves his spell quickly." - Austenprose"What would Jane Austen have thought? I think she would have loved this book. She might even have written it herself had she lived in a less constrained age." - Books Are Cool   "Darcy's demise and subsequent 'rebirth' are written to perfection. It has renewed my faith in the sub-genre."-  Reflections of a Book Addict

From the Author Q: Most, if not all, Jane Austen Fan Fiction assumes the reader has a strong knowledge of the source material, in this case Pride and Prejudice. Do you think readers of Pulse and Prejudice need to know Jane Austen's original well? A: No. This has always been intended as a stand-alone adaptation of Miss Austen's classic. At the time I began the project, I had never even heard of JAFF--and neither had my beta readers! In fact, I finished Volume I last because five of my six beta readers had either not read Pride and Prejudice or had "read it so long ago" that they didn't remember it, and so I had to add more of Miss Austen's dialogue to provide clarification and context. This time, however, we see Mr. Darcy's interpretation of events. Because I worked to channel Miss Austen while writing this, adhering to her style and language, who am I to change her words on the few occasions that the plots overlap? Several readers who had never read Pride and Prejudice have asked that I publish a combination, with facing pages of Pulse and Prejudice on the timeline with the original so they can see what Elizabeth is doing, say, while Darcy is in London, and get her perspective. I have absolute no idea how something like that could be accomplished! I suggest that they read them both together since everyone should real Pride and Prejudice at least once. I am always pleased to hear from readers who say that reading my adaptation made them want to read the original.

From the Inside Flap In this thrilling and sensual adaptation of the classic love story, Elizabeth Bennet and the citizens of Hertfordshire know Fitzwilliam Darcy to be a proud, unpleasant sort of man, but they never suspect the dark secret of his true nature. The author devoted fifteen months traveling to Britain and researching Regency England, as well as vampire lore and literature. In the few instances in which the plots overlap, excerpts from canon have been expertly woven in so that prior knowledge of Pride and Prejudice is not required for full enjoyment of this remarkable novel.

Mr. Darcy makes the perfect vampire hero By Z Hayes I have been an ardent fan of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (Norton Critical Editions) since I was a young teen and have read most of the reimagined tales based on Elizabeth and Darcy, the two main characters in Pride and Prejudice. I am not an Austen purist so I tend to enjoy film adaptations like Lost in Austen and also creative takes on the story such as the recent Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Deluxe Heirloom Edition (Quirk Classics). I was predictably excited to read Pulse and Prejudice which imagines Mr. Darcy as a vampire!Author Colette Saucier has put a fun, thrilling twist to Mr. Darcy in this engaging adaptation. She has obviously done her research and the Regency world inhabited by Elizabeth and Darcy comes vibrantly alive. I admit I love supernatural reads, and seeing Mr. Darcy portrayed as a vampire wasn't shocking at all, in fact it was thrilling to see one of my favorite literary characters reimagined as a supernatural creature, and convincingly at that! Also, a nice twist in the reconceptualizing of Mr. Wickham here:-) He's still a villain, but let's just say he's also something much more. I could absolutely believe why Darcy and Wickham loathe each other so much with the twist the author places in the narrative. The language of Austen is very much alive in here, but I enjoyed this though it seemed a little too reminiscent of the source work. However, the author does also include her own impressions and fills in some 'gaps' in the source work which work to this novel's advantage since these impressions credibly portray Darcy's vampire side. This is recommended for those who enjoy reading reworkings of Austen's works with a supernatural bent, and definitely not for Austen purists!

By Meredith (Austenesque Reviews) We all know that Mr. Darcy is fastidious, aloof, and private, but according to Colette Saucier, he has every reason to exhibit these traits. In Pulse and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy is...a vampire. That's right, he is no longer human - he is immortal and cursed! Mr. Darcy needs to be fastidious because with his blood cravings, extremely cold skin, and abhorrence of human food - Darcy fears others may become suspicious of his unusual habits. Mr. Darcy has to remain aloof because he firmly believes that, due to his condition, marriage, family, love are no longer in his future. Mr. Darcy must guard his privacy because his secret nature, if discovered, would ruin his reputation and his sister's future...In Colette Saucier's vampiric retelling of Pride and Prejudice, readers are able to witness how much stronger Darcy's attraction to Elizabeth is and how much harder he tries to resist her...While this isn't the first vampire Darcy to appear on the scene (Mr. Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange, Vampire Darcy's Desires by Regina Jeffers, Blood and Prejudice by Susan Krinard in Bespelling Jane Austen), it is one written almost entirely from Mr. Darcy's perspective. So here's your chance to get into vampire Darcy's head!My favorite scenes in this novel, were when Darcy's vampirism took over. His unguarded moments, filled with longing, battling for control..."Overcome by craving, he moved behind her, holding her against his chest. He tightened his arms around her, their faces touching cheek to cheek...he need only untie her bonnet to reveal her throat and take that for which he hungered. He loosened the ribbon to expose her pulse and held his open mouth against it, allowing his tongue to lathe along the beating flush. His body trembled with desire. He sucked gently and pressed his teeth into her neck without breaking the skin..."*swoon* Doesn't that just make you melt?In addition, I found Ms. Saucier's new characters Comtesse de Calmet, Lord Calmet, and Amadeus to be very intriguing and invigorating additions! I enjoyed seeing Darcy get jealous of another man paying attention to Elizabeth and I like how the Comtesse was looking out for Darcy and expressing her concerns. I feel like that there might be more to her than we were told...I'm not sure though, since her story ended without any other clues...Perhaps she will make an appearance in the next book?My one main quibble for this novel is that I sometimes felt the vampire aspect too tame. I don't think it needed more blood and gore, I'm not a fan of graphic violence. It's just that Darcy's vampirism was just a little too well-controlled for my taste. He is a relatively "new" vampire, and yet he already seems resigned and used to his affliction. He was a very human vampire, I think I would have enjoyed the story more if we got to see a little bit more of the out-of-control, dangerous, and mysterious sort. In addition, I felt the history about Darcy becoming a vampire a little too thin and lacking in detail. I was very interested in learning more about the circumstances regarding Darcy becoming a vampire.Thoughtfully blended and reverently portrayed - Pulse and Prejudice is a paranormal retelling that, first and foremost, remains true to Jane Austen's novel. It will make your pulse race a little, but not give you fainting fits! While this Darcy isn't as intoxicating and daring as Damon Salvatore - he nonetheless makes a very yummy vampire!Note: Because there are two brief intimate love scenes within the last thirty pages, I'd recommend this novel for Mature Audiences.Austenesque Reviews

That book was wonderful and I have read it twice.. so far. So when I saw a book about Darcy as a vampire I had to read it. I could not put it down. I hope to see more of these variations. I still love the realistic P & P stories but these are a great twist to a classic story.

The Price They Paid is the stunning and dramatic true story of a legendary helicopter commander in Vietnam and the flight crews that followed him into the most intensive helicopter warfare ever—and how that brutal experience has changed their lives in the forty years since the war ended. -Nine million Americans served in the military during the Vietnam era. -2.6 million of them served in Vietnam. -Fewer than a million of those saw combat. -In 2015, 58,300 names were listed on The Wall as killed or still missing. -More than 300,000 were wounded. Reliable statistics aren't available to tell us how many died later due to exposure to Agent Orange, suicide, traumatic brain injury or other causes probably related but not directly traceable to their combat service. No one knows how many are scarred by PTSD or other mental illness. The Price They Paid shares the true story of aviators in one helicopter unit and how their harrowing experiences forever changed their lives.

By charles vehlow As one of the contributors and a helicopter pilot mentioned in the book, I can only describe this book as “Magnificent.” The Price They Paid does an excellent job of providing background and color for the years of the Vietnam War, while capturing the day to day operations of C Troop, 2/17th CAV in the hostile Vietnam/Laos environment. As importantly, Mike Putzel catches, and brilliantly describes, the warrior- spirit of our commander, Major James T Newman, and those of us that flew with him as we carried out the missions assigned to our reconnaissance unit. Mike completes the story of C Troop by tracing its history and the good, the bad and the ugly of the post-war impacts that have affected us all and that still impact many of us today. Finally, The Price They Paid provides a means for me for doing something I have never adequately been able to do: describe to my children and grandchildren what it is like to fly helicopters in combat, and then return home to peacetime and beyond.

This the best non-fiction book about the Vietnam War By Stephanie This the best non-fiction book about the Vietnam War, the men America sent to fight it and their lives afterwards I have ever read. Some context. First, I met the author during my second tour in Vietnam. Second, on my return I became a journalist. Third, I've been reading military history for more than 60 years and it is with that experience that I state so flatly that this book is a triumph of both dogged, fair, accurate journalism and a singularly brilliant immersion into a world most readers will find literally incredible. The author successfully transforms arcane facts and photographic faces of post adolescent youngsters thrust into an alien world of boredom one minute chaos, hideous wounds and death the next. But the most salient of human attributes illuminated by The Price They Paid is the literally incomprehensible love these warriors felt -- and continue to feel -- for each other. Mr. Putzel provides readers willing to enter this world a unique understanding of that place, that time and those men. Some readers will undoubtedly find themselves conflicted by the pride, sadness, love and anger this story evokes. And as the title implies, the pride and love and anger did not end when the young warriors returned to "The World". Perhaps a singular achievement of this book is its success in relating to readers the agonies its subjects endured then and the different but related pain so many continue to suffer today. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was not recognized until long after these soldiers returned from the cauldron that reshaped them. Today it is common knowledge. One can only hope that this painfully beautiful litany of triumph and travail elevates its subjects from the realm of the willfully forgotten to the world of recognition so richly deserved.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Compelling Read By Darcia Helle For some people, Vietnam was a long time ago, a blip in history that has given way to current day concerns. For others, it remains a deeply embedded scar on their psyche. For all of us, it should be more than a lesson on war tactics. It should be a lesson on the incredible emotional toll war takes on the men and women who serve, as well as the people who love them. The author has put together a precise, compelling account of life as a Condor, doing battle via helicopter, during the Vietnam War. This is an easy read, as far as writing style. The author engages us, pulls us in, show us in unflinching honesty what occurred. This is not an easy read as far as content. We have all the action of the best military thriller, but the details are quite real.We often forget that the majority of people in combat were barely into adulthood. Many went from living with their parents, with curfews and homework, straight into a terrifying world of chaos and gunfire. We see the heroic acts of terrified young men as they fight for survival, even as they struggle to shed their youthful innocence. This book centers around Jim Newman, a career military man who rose through the ranks and risked his life countless times in order to save his men. I can't say that I liked the man. I didn't. At least, I didn't like the man the war turned him into. No doubt something broke within him during his time at war. He became a shadow of himself, or perhaps someone else entirely. The information on PTSD from the personal perspective of these men is profound. There is so much we don't know about the after effects of trauma, and this book goes a long way toward teaching us.An interesting aspect also touched upon here is the adrenaline addiction. These men live on the edge, sleepless, always running, battling, hyper-aware. Then suddenly they are released and expected to live the sedate life of an average citizen. Many find that this sudden shift is a boredom they can't handle. I see this to a lesser extent in my husband. He served in our first Gulf War and he still misses that adrenaline high. For us readers, the suffering ends when we close the book. For many of those who have fought and are now fighting our wars, the suffering never ends. Isn't it time we did better by these men and women?*I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.*

Excerpt from Wanderings in the OrientTo most Americans, "going abroad" means visiting Europe. Since European travel will doubtless be unsatisfactory for some years to come, the globetrotter may well turn his attention to the Far Eeast which, while not so accessible, is after all easily reached if the cost be not prohibitive; and the ubiquitous Cook is nearly always on hand to help the traveler out of difficulties. The trip across the Pacific is of course a long one, but the journey is interrupted, before the end of the first week, by a stop at that tropical paradise, the Hawaiian Islands. If one should need a complete rest, this seven thousand mile voyage is just the thing. If he desire he may read or study to good advantage. If inclined to sea-sickness there is plenty of time to recover and still enjoy the greater part of the journey. While the distances between stopping places are often great one feels that he can "do" a place in much less time than it would take in Europe, where objects of historic and other interest are so crowded together. If interested in the work of foreign missions abundant opportunity offers for their study at first hand.It was chiefly during these journeys between stopping places that the following sketches were written, as a sort of diary or log, illustrated by photographs taken by the writer. On a beautiful morning in May the U. S. Army Transport "Sherman," after a voyage of twenty-eight days from San Francisco, tied up at the dock in Manila. The regular lines make the trip in much less time than the leisurely transports, but the writer, as a representative of the Smithsonian Institution, was furnished passage on the government vessel. With Manila as headquarters collecting trips were made to various regions roundabout. Some of these places are described in the following chapters.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The History of Herodotus is now considered as the founding work of history in Western literature. Written from the 450s to the 420s BC in the Ionic dialect of classical Greek, The Histories serves as a record of the ancient traditions, politics, geography, and clashes of various cultures that were known in Western Asia, Northern Africa and Greece at that time. It is not an impartial record but it remains one of the West's most important sources regarding these affairs. Moreover, it established without precedent the genre and study of history in the Western world, although historical records and chronicles existed beforehand. It stands as one of the first accounts of the rise of the Persian Empire, the events of, and causes for, the Greco-Persian Wars between the Achaemenid Empire and the Greek city-states in the 5th century BC. Herodotus portrays the conflict as one between the forces of slavery (the Persians) on the one hand, and freedom (the Athenians and the confederacy of Greek city-states which united against the invaders) on the other. The Histories was at some point divided into the nine books of modern editions, conventionally named after the Muses.

By Victoria Hardiman Herodotus is always amusing, often fascinating, sometimes a bit fanciful, but he was there and he was indefatigably curious and and described things in great detail. A wonderful supplement to the books on Nineveh and Babylon.
