By Kathryn svendsen Around the World Adventures of Max and Jack created for young children to understand more about other countries and children from around the world. It is less of a story book and more of a fact book. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t interesting.Max and his pet dog take you on a trip to a new country in each book where they meet new boys and girls and their animal friends who take them on a guided tour where they see some of the wonderful things of their country and learn some of the interesting things of that country. The whole purpose of these books is to increase tolerance between children of different nations. But I think it is also a great resource for young school children to get facts for early school reports too. There are excellent pictures to look at if families will be traveling to these countries that could be used to help spark the interest of the child in preparation before the trip. The pictures are clear and crisp. The only thing I didn’t like about the pictures was the one page where the world map was oriented 90 degrees to the rest of the book. I would have like to have seen the page oriented the same way as the rest of the book. The text is simple with the letters like “g” being written as we do when we print which is helpful for young children learning to read.Max talked like a child which was very appropriate. The book is a very good book for reading with a parent. I think parents and children will enjoy it. I gave it 4 stars out of 5.Thank you to the author for providing the book in exchange for a fair and honest review. A positive opinion was not required. All thoughts are my own.To see my complete review, visit Shelf Full of Books http://kathrynsshelffullofbooks.blogspot.com/2015/07/book-review-around-world-adventures-of.html

Excerpt from With the Camel Corps Up the NileIn presenting the following pages to the public, I feel that a certain apology is due, for it is now over three years since the Nile Expedition took place (and most people have forgotten all about it), and several accounts of it, infinitely better and fuller than mine, have been published. To tell the truth, my story was about to see the light two years ago, and it was only owing to circumstances over which I had not much control that its appearance has been delayed till now.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.

Anthem is a dystopian fiction novella by Ayn Rand, written in 1937 and first published in 1938 in England. It takes place at some unspecified future date when mankind has entered another dark age. Technological advancement is now carefully planned (when it is allowed to occur at all) and the concept of individuality has been eliminated.

Philosophy for Stupid People By JB There are two kinds of people in the world: those who define themselves by 'The Fountainhead' and those who think people who define themselves by 'The Fountainhead' should dummy up. 'Anthem' is, in essence, the complete substance of Rand's remedial meritocracy-based philosophy crammed into a decently-written science fiction novella. Honestly, you could go ahead and read the Fountainhead or, worse, waste precious hours of your life slogging through Atlas Shrugged, but everything Rand ever had to say she said in Anthem. It's actually a good little read, a dystopian future warning akin to 'We' by Yevgeny Zamyatin. But, unfortunately, it's delivered from Rand's anvil-to-the-skull individualist soapbox.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not Ayn Rand's Best By michele Ayn Rand is considered one of modern America's better authors. Acquired taste or high school/college reading assignment, most of us first experienced this writer as the latter. Anthem is an early work and it is very apparent in this novella. I found it difficult to finish, and it's only a little better than 60 pages. Simply put, I did not enjoy this book and I wouldn't advise it as an introduction to the author's other works.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Stunning and philosophical By Kyle Sousa This book really makes you think if the needs of the many actually outweigh the needs of the few. Ayn Rand will make you ponder this for years to come. Ayn may make you see it in a completely new way and may even change your opinion. Ayn shows that having a big ego is not bad at all. Ayn was absolutely phenomenal throughout the entire book, but Ayn shined in the last two chapters. Ayn has made an amazing philosophical book that even though was short, is now my favorite book. This book is hard to understand, so I would not recommend this book for very young children, but older kids and adults. This book might have changed the way I look at life.

Wagner's operatic works rank with the supreme achievements of western culture. But acceptance of Wagner's musical genius is tempered by feelings of misgiving and many believe the composer's underlying ideas to be indefensible. A self-styled social revolutionary, Wagner thought the world could be redeemed through vegetarianism and Aryan philosophy.Introducing Wagner: A Graphic Guide separates the composer's art from the ideas and the arrogant destructive personal behaviour of the man.

Introducing Wagner: A Graphic Guide (Introducing...), by Michael White, Kevin Scott

About the Author Michael White was voted Britain’s least boring music critic by listeners of Classic FM. He has made documentaries about Menotti, Britten and Nielsen and once attempted to explain Wagner's Ring Cycle on TV in half an hour. He's the author of two books: Introducing Wagner (Icon) and Opera & Operetta (HarperCollins).

7 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Facile, but fun. By darragh o'donoghue There are three unavoidable truths about Wagner: that he was one of the most repellent men who ever lived; that he was one of the greatest geniuses that ever lived; and that people either love him or hate him.Michael White's highly entertaining introduction to this horrifying figure concentrates mostly on the first 'fact' - it is, after all, easier to list someone's biographical failures than explain why the closing symphony of the Gotterdammerung sounds both like the terrible end of the world and the unaccountable essence of sublimity (I'm afraid he gets you talking this way). And so, amusingly, we are told about Wagner's cruelties, caprices, infidelities, and, of course, his anti-Semitism; and given an interesting guide to some of the more sensible influences (eg Schopenhauer, Proudhon) on Wagner's loony philosophies, and a sound cultural and political background. This proper emphasis on the man rather neglects the artist, and while White quite rightly argues the impossibility of separating both, you don't get much sense of the sheer magnitude of Wagner's achievement (using the odd big word isn't enough), or what it means for us, the listener, to be entranced by the works of such an ogre. That said, the sheer readability and cheek of this book, as with all others in this series, is great fun, even if it doesn't achieve its aim (to make you master of the subject) as the book on Post-Modernism did.The chief joy of this series, however, is the illustration, and Kevin Scott keeps up the remarkably high standard, fusing dada, colage, pop art, with some astonishing pastiche and cartoon work, which means every page, even if you are dissatisfied with its contents, is a pleasure to read.

Peru and Bolivia have become very popular tourist destinations because, mainly, of the amazing stone remains left behind by cultures such as the Inca. Machu Picchu is the number one popular site for travelers to South America, yet how many of these visitors realize that many of the famous, and less known megalithic sites are much older than cultures such as the Inca and thus were not made by them! In this book, Brien Foerster shows you that places such as Cusco, Puma Punku, Tiwanaku and even Machu Pic'chu were initially constructed thousands of years before the Inca or other famous people existed. Mounting scientific evidence shows that prior to the end of the Ice Age, 12,000 years ago, very advanced cultures existed in Peru and Bolivia, and had advanced high technology. They shaped stone in ways that we can not...

By Dr. Dave This book helped bring together a lot of the findings that are starting to make some degree of sense. When the author speculates, he clearly labels it so, and he does reference a great number of facts concerning the more recent (common era, or AD) successions of civilizations. It becomes clear in the book that there was an old civilization that predates the Inca, the workmanship of which with regard to stone, is far advanced. As we move toward modern times, the workmanship becomes cruder. By identifying sources of the megaliths and discussing them, we can begin to gather an understanding of a very different life at the time of megalithic construction. It seems most logical that a global disaster struck, which could've been due to a coronal mass injection, a meteor hit, catastrophic ice melting, or any other combination of events. An association between megalithic structures and skeletons with extended skulls suggests that a different form of human being may have been behind these phenomenal works. The extended skulls are not due to binding, although skull malformations due to binding are indeed found in the region.I have been following this author's work since it was first brought to my attention about a year and a half ago. The easy and smooth style of his narrative makes it a real pleasure to read. The information value is well worth the minor price for this e-book.

By Frederick James Dart The author points out many on-site evidences that a more advanced technology for cutting, moving, and assembling some of the largest and hardest blocks of igneous rock existent anywhere on earth, has apparently developed very much earlier than most mainstream archeologists would allow. Some blocks of stonework, as reused by later paleo-indian cultures, would require diamond-studded saws or laser beam cutting if attempted to be duplicated to-day. Having followed up the reading of this book with an actual visit to some of the sites, evidences of precision-cut, squared blocks and "fused" mortar-less constructions that I observed, quite validated Foerster;s main contentions. Clearly, metal and stone-hammer tools (none even found!) could not have achieved some of the straight-line polished surfaces, and so archeologists really need to restudy such artifacts to resolve the intense mysteries that these sites contain.

Niemi This short book describes numerous archaeological sites in Peru and Bolivia, some of which are little known. The descriptions are open ended, rather than reaching conclusions without real data. Actual data is described and the Spanish are described according to their actions taken. Sharp contrasts are drawn between the Inca and an unknown civilization that built the megalithic structures upon which the Inca often constructed. This is a treasure trove for someone researching megalithic civilizations.

It's as far as possible from the mood of that gothic fantasy, and illustrates Marsh's amazing ability to hop from one genre to another with ease. I'm not sure how to characterize this highly inventive novel. You might call it a spoof combined with a morality tale - well seasoned with social satire. The plot revolves around a double. James Merrett discovers he bears an exact resemblance to the Marquis of Twickenham, one of the richest peers in England. The Marquis, who was always a bad lot, has disappeared for fifteen years, and his needy relatives wish he could be proved dead, so they could inherit. As it happens, James is a performance artist able to mimic death - to the point of fooling teams of doctors. Perhaps you see where this is going... The plot is a delightful mix of absurd situations, moral perplexities, emotional ups and downs, and startling turns of events. The story is clever, the dialog witty. It would be fun to discuss this book with a friend. Although it's very light, it makes some serious points about human nature. Marsh fans and fans of Edwardian wit are pretty sure to enjoy The Twickenham Peerage.

I found it amusing, a little absurd at times, but generally enjoyable.Obviously, this is not a modern book, but it still has a lot to offer without being grand literature.

This kind of book is awesome for the mind’s eye with all the different settings and situations. It is such an encouragement to read Christian testimonies. Each day after I read I had a prayer time about the concept, which was a great starting point. I found I was really enjoying prayer time while I was in Vanuatu.” - Isaac (Australia) “I like the book size. It is compact and perfect for travellers. The advice for travellers section is very useful and practical.” - Ricky (Canada) “I can’t put it down. It is so interesting. You certainly give God glory throughout your whole journey. This really rounds it out but also makes it point to God, because He’s the one thing that they all have in common.” - Naomi (Australia) “It is really wonderful from a Christian perspective and the author has shown a lot of transparency, honesty and reality.” - Bev (USA) “I loved the daily devotions and found them to be easy to read, practical and challenging, which is what you need when on the road and away from the usual church support. Spiritual Tool for Christian Travellers By Amazon Customer I was searching for a Christmas gift for my sons who have recently graduated from university and have plans to travel abroad. I found Faith Based Travels which was exactly the type of book I was looking for. It is full of Bible verses, encouragement, and examples of specific situations that are very relatable. It is a wonderful guide and devotional to point you to God each day and to enrich your travel experience. My son is currently travelling solo and has found the book to be very helpful. I am thankful for Nicki's desire to write this book and share her experiences to support and encourage backpackers and Christian travellers to keep their eyes on God no matter where they go.

This means that you have a devotional book woth a large variety of experiences from traveling in different parts of the world and large scope of ideas to help you keep up time with God, whether you are traveling alone, in a group, just seeing the world or on short or long term mission. This book has short and simple devotions that are not complicate, but straight to the point which is time with God.A very worthy purchase for any traveller.

The stories and reflections from each traveller are relevant and thought provoking, and there are lots of tips, prayers and verses. Each day's devotion is short enough to fit in over a coffee or a quick read in a dormitory bedroom, leaving you ready to start the day with a fresh perspective on your day. Would also be an excellent gift for someone about to go on their travels.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Boastful Toad, proud Toad! By othoniaboys Around the time of my sixth birthday, in 1949, I was delighted by the Disney version of this book, although the movie plot is somewhat different from the book plot. I recently got around to reading the book in the Signet Classics edition with illustrations by Alex Tsao ("Alex Taso" on the title page, but it is Tsao). This is a wonderful book and it was perfectly written, although the vocabulary is likely to go over the heads of younger readers. The descriptions of nature are so poetical as to leave me on the verge of tears. Several things need to be explained to younger readers, such as the meaning of the chapter heading "The return of Ulysses" which refers to the climax of Homer's Odyssey. Also there is the little matter of the great god Pan, whose name is not mentioned. The motor car needs to be explained, as this is a 1908 antique, and not the automobile of a century later. The story of Toad of Toad Hall is, of course, a story with a moral: pride goeth before a fall. I perhaps could wish that Grahame had not made his animals so humanlike, especially when he has Toad brushing or combing his hair, as if toads had hair. Toads also don't live in mansions and drive motor cars, so we must accept the absurdities or else reject the whole tale.

That picture you see on the cover is the only one you will find. Still a great book, but some more searching will find you an illustrated edition.

This story, 'The House That Jack Built', was was one of the first two books illustrated by Caldecott and was originally published in 1878 as part of Caldecott's 'Picture Books' series.

Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) was one of the most important British illustrators. He transformed the world of decorated children's books in the Victorian era. In 1877, he was asked by Edmund Evans, the colour printer and talented engraver, to illustrate two children's books. These books were an immediate success and he went on to produce two books every Christmas until he died. Caldecott chose all the stories and rhymes he illustrated and occasionally wrote and added to the stories himself. His delightful style and humour can still be enjoyed by young and old alike.

Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight.

The House That Jack Built - Illustrated by Randolph Caldecott, by Randolph Caldecott

About the Author Randolph Caldecott (1846-86) was born in Chester, England, the son of a hatter. While still a child he showed his talent for drawing, modelling and carving, but he started his working life as a bank clerk before going to the Manchester School of Art at the age of twenty-one. He moved to London in search of commissions and produced drawings and cartoons for newspapers and journals before his first success with a set of one hundred and twenty drawings for Washington Irving's ""Old Christmas"" in 1876. It was his idea to produce a series of 'Toy Books' (picture books of a uniform size printed in colour), and this became the subject of the famous collaboration between the artist and the printer/engraver Edmund Evans. The first two - ""The House that Jack Built"" and ""The Diverting History of John Gilpin"" - were published in time for Christmas 1878 and the first printing of 10,000 copies sold out quickly. 'The very essence of all illustration for children's books', said"" The Times"" on Christmas Eve. During the next seven years, Caldecott produced fourteen more Toy Books, illustrating nursery rhymes and songs with the interpretive skill that makes him such an important figure in the British picturebook tradition. He died, comparatively young, in St. Augustine, Florida.

Gonzalez This is a very nice rendition of the classic nursery rhyme, illustrated by the nineteenth-century children's book illustrator Randolph Caldecott (the 19th-century children's illustrator for whom the Caldecott award was named). There are more modern versions of the nursery rhyme, but this one captures visually the flavor and mood by portraying the words and characters in a cultural context that made sense when the rhyme originated. Modern children may not know much about the use of barley malt and the ways of cats stalking rats, but they can see these things portrayed as they really were in this beautiful book. A very nice addition to your nursery-rhyme collection, and the best version I have seen so far, although harder to find than those produced in recent years.

"[...] “He doesn’t deserve moderate language! He’s a bounder, if I ever saw one! What’s he doing here?” “He seems to be dancing,” said Patty, demurely, “and he doesn’t dance half badly, either.” “Oh, stop your fooling, Patty; I’m not in the mood for it. Tell me who he is.” Patty had never known Roger to be so out of temper, and she resented his tone, which was almost rude. Now, for all her sweetness, Patty had a touch of perversity in her nature, and Roger had roused it. So she said: “I don’t know why you speak like[...]".

Patty's Social Season, by Carolyn Wells

About the Author Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was an American author and poet. She was born in Rahway, New Jersey. After finishing school she worked as a librarian for the Rahway Library Association. Her first book, At the Sign of the Sphinx (1896), was a collection of charades. Her next publications were The Jingle Book and The Story of Betty (1899), followed by a book of verse entitled Idle Idyls (1900). After 1900, Wells wrote numerous novels and collections of poetry. She wrote a total of more than 170 books. During the first ten years of her career, she concentrated on poetry, humor, and children's books. According to her autobiography, The Rest of My Life (1937), around 1910 she heard one of Anna Katherine Green's mystery novels being read aloud and was immediately captivated by the unraveling of the puzzle. From that point onward, she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among her most famous works are: Patty at Home (1904), Marjorie's Busy Days (1906), The Gold Bag (1911), Marjorie's Maytime (1911), Marjorie at Seacote (1912), Patty Blossom (1917), Vicky Van (1918) and Patty and Azalea (1919).

Fun Book By Kim Written in the early part of the twentieth century, Patti's Social Season is about the day to day life of a well-to-do young lady as she makes her debut into society. She and her friends attend parties and events, but also find time to do good deeds. The book is not very realistic for today but it was an interesting and fun look back at another time for a certain segment of society. I will probably read other books in this series. Patti is harmless.

I suppose it is good escapist fiction, but reading about such a spoiled, rich little flirt gives the feeling of eating too much candied fruit. Bilious. There are much more satisfying reads out there. Give me Edna Ferber anyday!
