As an homage to the explorers, discoverers and pioneers that on countless occasions have inspired Royal Explorer Club members to venture out into the wild, the club has created the book Safe Return Doubtful. It is a carefully curated collection of anecdotes that will inspire boldness and bravado in the reader. Chapters include the tale of Hugh Glass who after wrestling a bear had to crawl back to civilisation, pirate Benjamin Hornigold who once attacked a ship just to steal their hats and of course the legendary story of Mad Jack Churchill, famous for always bringing his bagpipes to battle and for carrying out the last recorded kill by longbow and arrow in WWII. Other chapters include awe-inspiring stories of war heroes as well as everyday heroes, tails from the endeavours of famous explorers, the adventures of a female balloonist, an account of the deific madness of Xerxes and the unfortunate tale of the sinking of a German U-boat due to the malfunction of its toilet. Safe Return Doubtful is an unparalleled compilation devoted to the spirit of those with contempt for conventional wisdom, an attraction to the grandiose and an obvious disregard for danger.

About the Author Lazarus Royal is the common pseudonym used by the members of the Royal Explorers Club, a small group of men unified in the hunt for adventure, armed only with guile, bravado and contempt for conventional wisdom. We draw our inspiration from the old explorers and adventurers of the world. The truly tough men of absurd principle, those who were often drawn to the ostentatious and grandiose. We find enjoyment in the stories of their tenacity, toughness and humour in the face of adversity.

One of the greatest art theft stories of the 20th century: André Malraux, French novelist, art theorist, and eventually France’s Minister of Cultural Affairs, and his wife, Clara, traveled to Cambodia in 1923, planning to steal and smuggle artifacts out of the country and sell them in America. The Cambodian treasure hunt promised to be a mix of cultural sleuthing for important antiquities and risk-taking on the fuzzy edge of the laws that governed historical sites. The jungle expedition ended in arrest and, for André, trial and conviction. But it also led to a second Asian venture: the launching of a Saigon newspaper, L’Indochine, dedicated to the aspirations of the indigenous population. Madsen follows the couple from this fateful adventure that so shaped their future to the end of their marriage, and after.

Silk Roads: The Asian Adventures of Clara and André Malraux, by Axel Madsen

From Publishers Weekly Clara Malraux was 25 and her husband Andre 22 when in 1923 they sailed from Marseilles to Indochina. They planned to travel into the Cambodian jungle, locate the ruins of Banteai Srey (a temple), steal a few examples of Khmer temple art and continue on to New York, where they would deliver their ill-gotten treasures to a dealer, pocket the profits and sail home. The thefts were discovered before the couple left Asia, and they were put under house arrest; what actually took place on that and subsequent voyages is the subject of this book. Madsen also discusses, tangentially, French colonialism and the spread of Communist ideology in Asia. Much as they yearned to, the Malrauxs never succeeded in visiting the fabled city of Samarkand through which passed the Silk Road, the trade route that for centuries linked China with the West. Madsen ( Gloria and Joe ) lets his affection for both husband and wife shape his account. Though the marriage didn't last, its story entertains, as do details of the Malrauxs' individual activities after the divorce. Photos not seen by PW. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In October 1923 the Malrauxs went to Cambodia to obtain Khmer art figures for sale in New York. This trip and the Malraux's subsequent adventures in French Indochina through the spring of 1926 make up most of the book. The last three chapters cover the Malrauxs' other travels, a summary of the rest of their lives, and an epilogue to the Indochina adventure. Much of this book is based on Clara Malraux's Memoirs (Farrar, 1967). Madsen is the author of many popularly written biographies, including Malraux ( Morrow, 1976), from which many passages in the current book are taken almost verbatim. While written in a reportorial style, Silk Roads is often rambling and digressive and is for comprehensive collections only. A more political study of the Malrauxs in these years is Walter G. Langlois's Andre Malraux: The Indochine Adventure ( LJ 5/15/66).- Kathleen Farago, Lakewood P.L., OhioCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Spoiled Brats By Mark William Levy This book chronicles the Asian adventure of the Malraux couple, who, as a pair of young and rather devious travelers, engaged in antics including the (intended) theft of national treasures from Cambodia to finance their over-privileged lifestyle.Although Malraux later became serious about politics and managed some heroics during WWII before taking his place as a fixture of France's pantheon of Great Men of the Republic, one gets the feeling that part of the mystique of Malraux derived from boundless egotism and a somewhat unwholesome ambition. The book is rather hastily put together and contains some bad typos or errors...but on the whole is a lively and interesting account of the ambiguous career of a remarkable man.

One of the most significant and important inventors of the 20th century – indeed, of any age in history – is Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-born physicist and engineer who, like so many famous people today, credits his mother with his genius (the result of both genetics and an inventive environment). It is rare for readers to gain an intensely personal understanding of such an influential figure as Tesla, yet we have it in his My Inventions, which were edited together after six parts in an electrical magazine from 1919. His story, in his own words, is told with great sincerity and originality.

Fascinating character By John Price I have heard vastly different accounts of who and what Nikola Tesla was, and this book is a fascinating glimpse of the man from his own perspective. If even part of what he talked about is fact, he indeed may have been a genius who has a profound effect on our world today and could yet have an effect on our future. Or he may have been a visionary or dreamer who was suppresed by the time in which he lived. I must read more about him.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Truth and Beauty explained for us by a master. By M. Wilson A Face Illumined is one of Roe's very best novels and my personal favorite. It centers on a young artist who sees a lovely young woman at a concert. He is struck by her beauty in one instant, but is disturbed by her character revealed in the next. The artist seeks to acquaint himself with the girl, in the hope that he can somehow create in her character the beauty that he first saw in her face. He follows her family to their Summer hotel (this sounds like stalking, but it isn't) and then the battle ensues. This is a brilliant work that explores many themes delving into human character. There is a brilliant and poignant segment arguing against suicide. Roe was a minister, and his moving plea for receiving the Saviour is the highlight of the book. What a master!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. E.P. Roe is inspiring By Maggie I like all of the E.P. Roe books. E.P. Roe wrote when manners were required and yet society was facing the great Civil War and the aftermath. His time was not full of perfect people and he wrote about their real challenges and problems. People in the Roe books make mistakes, pay for them and are given a chance at redemption. He gives me hope that our challenged generation can come together and find the essence of America again that we can find a place for faith in this country. I have the whole collection in hardback but the books are so old that I'm afraid of damaging them so the Kindle version is really ideal.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. excellent By Jenn An excellent study in character and the changes that may come to any who allow the only One Who can work lasting change to labor on their behalf. As another wise lady in literature said, "to despair is to turn your back on God."

Twice Across the Plains 1849 and 1856 By Peggy A wonderfully written narrative of the trials and triumphs of settlers coming to claim their wealth in the gold mines of 1849. The only error I could find was the mention that T.J. Moore died on the trip in 1849 which could not be true due to the fact that I am a descendant of T.J. Moore. One would be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable narrative of the daily adventures and true strength of character of these people who chose to endue the travel by wagon from Virginia to California.

It was late summer time, and the perfume of flowers stole into the darkened room through the half opened window. The sunlight forced its way through a chink in the blind, and stretched across the floor in strange zigzag fashion. From without came the pleasant murmur of bees and many lazier insects floating over the gorgeous flower beds, resting for a while on the clematis which had made the piazza a blaze of purple splendour.

There are only 2, afaik.SPOILERS (if you haven't read the other book)Mr Sabin is called out of blissful retirement to search for his missing wife, Lucille, Countess of Something or Other. It turns out she is somehow wrapped up with a pan-national Royalist secret society of frightening power and influence, much like the Nihilists who put an end to Mr. Sabin's plans in the last book. Why these Royalists didn't show up to protect him from the Nihilists is never discussed.Like I said, readable and interesting to watch Mr. Sabin control himself and walk with such dignity and aristocratic bearing and tact, even as he plots to save his own life and reunite with his beloved Lucille. The ending is beyond belief, tho, and left me chortling with derision.

Context is everything By RobGM A nice crafted defense of the rights of the aristocracy to rule the "unwashed" masses crept up on me before I realized it. Though torn, I was hooked and wanted to know the fates of the characters. I read this because it is free, Oppenheim is a writer whose style intrigues me, and he typically spins a good yarn. Of course, reading older books exposes one to older sensibilities, somewhat jarring to a modern reader. Something of a departure from his luxurious mysteries, though akin in so many ways. The Yellow Crayon

*Includes pictures *Includes Biblical accounts and other primary source accounts of the Philistines *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, ‘Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.’ Then the Philistine said, ‘This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.’…David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.’” – 1 Samuel 17 Today, the term “Philistine” is often used as a euphemism for a person who is particularly uncouth, uncultured, ignorant, and possibly violent. Most people probably do not know the etymology of the word when they use it, and those that do probably only know the Philistines as villains from the Old Testament who were the eternal enemies of the Hebrews prior to and immediately after the latter formed the kingdom of Israel. Others may know the Philistines from the Biblical story of David and Goliath, as the “giant” was not only much larger than David but also a Philistine leader who commanded a large host of men. Although the Old Testament provides a credible source for some aspects of Philistine culture, it naturally paints a picture of them as a group of bloodthirsty warriors whose one purpose was to oppress the Hebrews/Israelites. When corroborated with ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian sources, along with modern archaeological studies, an examination reveals that the reputation that the Philistines earned from the Old Testament was partially warranted, but that there was also much more to Philistine culture. In fact, evidence indicates that while the Philistines were a warrior society who fought with the Israelites for a number of years, they also developed advanced aspects of their culture, including sophisticated government, a unique religion, and art (especially pottery). The Philistines may not have developed an extensive empire as the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Assyrians did, but their contributions to the history of the Ancient Near East was not minimal either. The Philistines’ presence and influence on the history of the ancient Near East was brief, and their departure from the historical record was especially quick, but while they were around they were a force to be reckoned with in the region. The Philistines: The History of the Ancient Israelites' Most Notorious Enemy looks at the history of one of the most famous societies mentioned in the Bible. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Philistines like never before, in no time at all.

This is a brief history of the ancient Philistines mentioned in various Biblical passages. The narrative is referenced with multiple primary sources and gaps in the historical evidence is plainly discussed. This treatise provides a better description of the Philistines than that found in the Bible and is easier to read and comprehend. I recommend it.

By Jim Parker Ancient Middle Eastern history has always intrigued me, particularly those cultures who came, rose to importance and 'vanished' . The Philistines doubly so because they are mentioned in Bible in conjunction with the Hebrews settling in the area and have come into English as a derogatory word. Interestingly enough it is in the book of Samuel and others that offers insight into the Philistines. Whether you are looking for answers or confirmation about the Philistines; this small volume can provide answers.

Best PDF Ebook Guinea Pig For Brunch: My life as a missionary doctor in Ecuador (Volume 2), by Andrea Gardiner

This fascinating personal memoir, told from the perspective of a missionary doctor in Ecuador, explores what it means to live every day fully, to love those around you, and to embrace the trials life throws at you. Dr. Andrea Gardiner once thought it was normal to expect a long, healthy, pain-free life. Finding herself in a poverty-stricken country where, suddenly, life is far from easy and individuals must learn to love God in spite of their suffering, she begins an intriguing journey. It is one that will leave you challenged and inspired. “Guinea Pig for Brunch delivers excellent insight into everyday living in Ecuador with the privations of poverty and danger laid alongside the simple faith and warmth of the individuals who come under Dr. Andrea Gardiner’s care. Woven throughout, Andrea honestly shares her own questions and struggles as she brings up her daughters in a culture very different to that of her birth. More than a missionary doctor story, this is rather an unfolding of one woman’s journey of trust and obedience to the God who called her to serve the suffering. I heartily recommend Guinea Pig for Brunch, but beware – you will be challenged!” Catherine Campbell, author of ‘Under the Rainbow’ and ‘God Knows Your Name’ “This is a remarkable book about 'grace under pressure' and the miracle working power of God to change lives in the midst of crisis. It will stay with me for a long time....” Jen Rees Larcombe, author

Running a class for those who are less fortunate to make things to be sold, and to raise money. Andrea and her husband have small children, and she decides to home school them. The couple also help build housing for those in need. The difference an inside toilet and a waterproof roof above families heads, make you appreciate how fortunate we are, and how we take so much for granted, including free health care. Andrea supports many people who become her friends.I loved this book and it was refreshing to see how Andrea and her family certainly live by their faith. A fantastic read, thank you Andrea for sharing your experiences, both good and bad

This Dodo Collections edition includes the full original text and an easy to use interactive table of contents. Life on the Mississippi is a memoir by Mark Twain of his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War, and also a travel book, recounting his trip along the Mississippi from St. Louis to New Orleans many years after the War. The book begins with a brief history of the river as reported by Europeans and Americans, beginning with the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1542. It continues with anecdotes of Twain’s training as a steamboat pilot, as the ‘cub’ of an experienced pilot. He describes, with great affection, the science of navigating the ever-changing Mississippi River in a section that was first published in 1876, entitled “Old Times on the Mississippi”. In the second half, Twain narrates his trip many years later on a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans. He describes the competition from railroads, and the new, large cities, and adds his observations on greed, gullibility, tragedy, and bad architecture. He also tells some stories that are most likely tall tales. Simultaneously published in 1883 in the United States and Great Britain, the book is said to have been the first submitted to a publisher as a typewritten manuscript.

Life on the Mississippi (Mark Twain Collection), by Mark Twain

Review Memoir of the steamboat era on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War by Mark Twain, published in 1883. The book begins with a brief history of the river from its discovery by Hernando de Soto in 1541. Chapters 4-22 describe Twain's career as a Mississippi steamboat pilot, the fulfillment of a childhood dream. The second half of Life on the Mississippi tells of Twain's return, many years after, to travel the river from St. Louis to New Orleans. By then the competition from railroads had made steamboats passe, in spite of improvements in navigation and boat construction. Twain sees new, large cities on the river, and records his observations on greed, gullibility, tragedy, and bad architecture. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Publisher 8 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover Part travel book, part autobiography, and part social commentary, Life on the Mississippi is a memoir of the cub pilot's apprenticeship, a record of Twain's return to the river and to Hannibal as an adult, a meditation on the harsh vagaries of nature, and a study of the varied and sometimes violent activities engaged in by those who live on the river's shores.

Allen Greenbaum This book--at times disjointed, rambling, self-referential, and irreverent--is decades ahead of its time. It's an interdisciplinarian's dream as Twain takes on economics, geography, politics, ancient and contemporary history, and folklore with equal ease. Mostly though, one appreciates his knack for exaggeration, the tall tale, and the outright lie. It's a triumph of tone, as he lets you in on his wild wit, his keen observation, and his penchant for bending the truth without losing his credibility as a guide. The book's structure is also modern: He recounts his days as a paddlewheel steam boat "cub," piloting the hundreds of miles of the Mississippi before the Civil War, then, in Part 2, returns to retrace his paddleboat route. Although a few of his many digressions don't work (they sometimes sound formulaic or too detailed) most of the narrative is extremely entertaining. Twain seems caught between admiration and disdain for the "modern" age-but he also rejects over-sentimentality over the past. He writes with beauty and cynicism, verve and humor. Very highly recommended!

The attention to detail and description place you within the story. This book is actually, I believe, an autobiography of Mark Twain's (Samuel Clemmons) life as a young man piloting steamboats up and down the Mississippi River.Whether the man, Mark Twain, interests you or not, Life on the Mississippi, is an eye opening look at America in an earlier era.In my (humble) opinion this is Mark Twain's best work.

64 of 72 people found the following review helpful. A compelling monologue of biography, geography and history By Corinne H. Smith Let me guess: your total exposure to Mark Twain came in high school, when you were forced to read about the antics of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, right? Well, now that you've reached adulthood, you should make time to read _Life on the Mississippi_. It's mandatory reading if you live in a state that borders the great river, anywhere from Minnesota down to Louisiana. It's mandatory reading if you have come to that point in life when you can suddenly appreciate American history and post-Civil War stories written by someone who lived through that time. Writing in the first half of the 1870s, Twain retraces the steps of his youth: the watery highway he knew when he trained to be a riverboat pilot nearly 20 years earlier. He speaks of how life _was_ along the river, and what life _became_. It's almost a "you can't go home again" experience for him, while the reader gets the benefit of discovering both time periods. I have two favorite parts that I share with others. Chapter IX includes a wonderful dissertation about how learning the navigational intricacies of the river caused Twain to lose the ability to see its natural beauty. And Chapter XLV includes an assessment of how the people of the North and the South reacted differently to the war experience. If I were a social studies teacher, I'd use that last passage in a unit on the reconstruction period. So put this title on your vacation reading list, and don't fret: the chapters are short and are many -- 60! -- but you can stop at any time, and the words go by fast. _Life on the Mississippi_ should make you forget all about any Twain trauma and report-writing you may have suffered as a teenager. [This reviewer was an Illinois resident when these comments were written.]

The story is a sort of quixotic tale of a boy growing up and travelling around having various experiences. This is intended for adults. I enjoyed it, and although it is more than a hundred years old now (1912) I did not find it stilted, dated or difficult to read. Readers should be aware that it takes place mostly in the South of the 1880's, with the attittudes and dialect appropriate to that time. I did not find it offensive, and, actually, considered it useful in learning about a people and period in American history mostly unknown to me, which after all, lead us to where we are now. BTW, I listened to a recorded version of this book, so I cannot comment on the formatting of the printed version. I'm attaching to the free version available here.

While exposing the vile history of unions, readers are acquainted with chasity, honor, and love through the life of Henry Little. The business, finance, and economic lessons presented in thought, dialogue, and narration are timeless and beautiful.
