For anyone who dreams of sailing away, here's a gritty memoir of a 15,000-mile solo expedition with a tiny, hand-made boat. Bent on discovery, Ladd ranges from Montana to the pirate-infested coast of Panama and Colombia, across the Andes, down a 600-mile river by night to avoid guerrillas, and through the Caribbean. Robbed, capsized, arrested and befriended, he sails and rows through a tumult of uncharted adventures. The cast of characters: Dieter, mad ex-Nazi on a desert island; Hans, the smuggler who disappears at sea; castaways, prostitutes and fortune seekers. Stow away with a poetic storyteller on a stormy voyage through nineteen countries, on the razor's edge between freedom and fear, loneliness and love.

By A Customer If you have read Don Starkell & sons' famous book "Paddle to the Amazon", you'll love this one. Here, Stephen Ladd builds his own boat and then spends a few years exploring around the Earth in it!The book is well written. Appropriate balance of humor, story telling & introspection.Readers are definitely left with ideas of boat designs and adventures floating around in their own heads after reading Ladd's account! If you enjoy reading about people enjoying life - this is a must!

One that makes you feel you are right there with Stephen Ladd on his journey to experience a part of the world in his personally constructed boat "Squeek." Not only did I take this trip with him while reading this book, I also became envious, knowing that I lack the creativity, stamina, and courage to ever do what he accomplished. A traveler who is individualistic, well-read, and an exceptional writer, his journey is a must read for all. I think many Americans caught up in their current lifestyles today could gain insight from this book. I hope that Stephen Ladd sets out on a journey like this again someday. How about it Steve?

He makes me feel what he felt and particpate in his dream. He makes me feel the strain of rowing for hours and the delight in small successes.A sailor who can write!

Matt Shane is a Harvard student and an early riser. He starts each day at his favorite coffee shop. Usually he has the shop to himself but on this morning there is a pretty Asian girl in his favorite booth. She is crying. Her name is Miyuki and she was to have flown on a non-stop flight from Tokyo to Boston but that flight was cancelled. Instead her routing took her from Tokyo to Los Angeles to JFK to LaGuardia and finally to Boston. She began her journey with ten one hundred dollar bills but several of those ended up in the pockets of dishonest cab drivers. She is discouraged and wants to return to Japan. Matt helps her and they fall in love. That's when the excitment begins. We meet Vito, a loveable Boston restaurant owner and Coach Durrell a Harvard football coach who is a lot less loveable. There is a kidnapping and, of course, the FBI. The second half of the story takes place in Japan. We meet Miyuki's family including mom and dad and younger brother, Kenji and sister, Kimiko. Yakuza, the Japanese mafia, play an important role in the book's second half. We get a good look at Japanese professional baseball, attitudes toward suicide and government corruption. Despite many distractions the romance thrives.

Insight into Love and Japan By Ruth Schmid A nice love story, exciting in the beginning as their love develops, and very exciting in the end as they travel back to Japan. I was intrigued by the descriptions of life in Japan from the viewpoint of the very wealthy. This is a book worthy of your time. You will enjoy it!

Brown mixes an unlikely group of characters and events into a quick moving and constant attention getting set of events. It is a fun read, and a learning experience. Highly recommended!

By Barbara "Miyuki, Harvard Girl" is highly recommended as a very enjoyable read. In fact, it would be perfect airplane reading. The characters are well drawn, and the plot highly developed and fast paced. The first chapter allows us to get hooked on the plot - who hasn't had problems in a foreign country? Most of us have also had the urge to help someone struggling in that situation. The cross-cultural elements comparing life in the East and West added to the flavor of the novel, and were encapsulated in the title. The airline descriptions of flight planning and airplane travels give us an insider's view of what is taking place. I especially enjoyed Chapter 29, "To Tokyo," where a flight to Japan turned into a saga in itself, with Matt's computer laptop battery smoking, and a consequent delay in Anchorage. The fight of good versus evil played heavily into "Miyuki's" themes, and the violent scenes were broadly drawn so we didn't have to skip over them so as not to "smell the blood." It is always gratifying when the bad guys get their comeuppances.Even if you don't have a trip planned, you can sit by the fire, fix yourself a cup of tea, invite the dog in, and indulge in a bit of armchair traveling while readying "Miyuki, Harvard Girl."

Second in the Margaret Series By Amazon Customer The Margaret series (six books), which date from the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, had all but disappeared until Kindle brought them back at no charge. No doubt young females (and some males, even) have been yearning unknowingly for an opportunity to experience emotionally the joy of living in 1900 or so with an uncle in a large, stately home not far from New York. They need yearn no longer. They can simply download. Two of three cousins, Peggy and Rita, whom the reader has already met in "The Three Margarets," have returned to the West and to Cuba after a joyous summer. That leaves Margaret. When Uncle John invites her to stay on at Fernley Hall, Margaret accepts with alacrity. Her long walks and exchanges of confidences with her beloved Uncle John, over the breakfast table and in the library, remain a constant joy. Alas, into every life, no matter how saintly, a little rain must fall, and Cousin Sophronia, who arrives uninvited, is a slow drip. She is the proverbial lemon from which one must make lemonade. Margaret is up to the task, particularly when aided by three small cousins who need her benevolence and guidance to realize their full, charming potential. Warning: There's a ghost in this book!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. these short stories are real gems By Linda Umstead For readers who find the subject of expensive jewels fascinating, here is a delightful compendium of stories from the point of view of a dealer in fine jewels. Each tale has a nice little problem and we soon learn that our hero is not a fellow with whom to be trifled. A great put-down-and-pick-up-again book.

Jewel Mysteries, Kindle Book By Katherine Bailey It is too bad that Kindle doesn't have some type of introduction to the books and what the books or each story is about instead of just jumping to page 1 of the book. This is okay, found some errors though. Why aren't the books just scanned instead of someone typing them up.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Some great Victorian Era detective stories narrated by a likeable amateur detective. By Whistlers Mom Max Pemberton had a most unusual career as a professional writer. He was a journalist and editor whose first novel (THE IRON PIRATE) was published when he was 30 years old. It was a success and from 1893 until 1914, he published at least one and sometimes two or three books a year (a total of 40) - mostly of the Jules Verne adventure/sci-fi type. Then he seems to have stopped publishing except for a few biographies. He founded the London School of Journalism in 1920. Maybe that fully occupied his time or maybe there were other factors. I find it very curious that such a popular author should be so prolific for over 20 years and then stop so abruptly. In 1904, he published a book of mystery stories featuring jewel dealer Bernard Sutton. "The Ripening Rubies" has been included in several anthologies of Victorian detective stories. I read it and fell in love with this intelligent, charming gentleman and his wry view of the English aristocracy to whom he sells his wares. So I was thrilled to be able to get a whole book of stories about him.The first story is (IMHO) very weak and I was afraid I was going to be disappointed in the book. Fortunately, the other nine stories (including "The Ripening Rubies") are much better. I enjoyed them thoroughly. They're written in first person and Sutton is a lively, amusing story teller. His occupation leads him down some fascinating paths and he frequently finds it necessary to solve a puzzle (or a crime) in order to protect his business or a valuable client. Not that he's blind to his clients' faults by any means. He's a shrewd, hard-headed Victorian gentleman and your money buys his jewels, but not his friendship or his admiration. To gain that, you must be the kind of person he admires and he has high standards. He's particularly critical of misers and several of the stories deal with penny-pinchers who let their love of money (and jewels) rule their lives. They get their just desserts in the end and we're all happy to see that "what goes around comes around." He's also (for an old bachelor) something of a romantic. He likes to see young lovers happy and will go to some trouble to help them out of their difficulties. In one story, he himself falls for the charms of a young lady and it's almost the death of him. He's a well-traveled cosmopolitan, at home in Paris or New York as well as London. One story finds him in Algiers, dealing with rascally Arabs and lethargic French policemen. One of my favorites pits a fickle English aristocrat against the high-spirited American heiress whom he courted and abandoned. "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" and American ladies (especially rich ones) don't take insults lying down.Pemberton was a fine writer and these are great stories. If you like Victorian mysteries, you shouldn't miss this book.

I read the Gutenberg Project copy provided on my e-reader. Sugar Plum is the name of the planet the small family purchases in order to flee Boston's corruption of New Victorian sensibilities. These space-age Victorians live in austere circumstances with plastic furniture and a robot servant who provides the cooked meals and does all the cleaning. They pride themselves on their self control. Nothing should ever be done that is improper...then they arrive on Sugar Plum. Not only is Sugar Plum already inhabited, but the family is stranded with no hope for rescue from the original owner, a space pirate! These people find themselves facing a new reality very quickly on Sugar Plum, for it is an uninhibited planet! This is a look at the insincerity of some societies and living your true values, sensibly. The fall of the New Victorian morals can be seen as the downfall of virtue in today's society OR as living as one truly should, without pretense and judgement of others. I did enjoy this story and it gave me room for thought on the values that are so prevalent today.

Interwoven with her historic account of the Yavapai and Apache Tribal Nation, the author presents her personal story of her ancestors, family and progeny in a very loving and very honest way. An obviously educated woman who has dedicated her life to helping others, the author's story is a testament to the fact that while life is sometimes difficult and seldom perfect, love of God, family and friends is all we ever need to endure.

By stratman88 I am from the same tribe but raised in the city and have alot of gaps in my Tribe's history as well as my immediate family's. This book fills in a great many gaps and I love the way Auntie Frieda tells such a wonderful story of survival which I am sure we all can relate to no matter what tribe we are from. The love and passion for her tribe, are clearly evident here and many of my non-Indian coworkers have requeste a copy of this great work! Thank you very much for this compelling read.

A sturdy boy in homespun, a lad of nearly fourteen years, whose eyes were clear and gray and whose face was resolute and honest, led his little sister by the hand, for she was small and the road was rough. “We’ll rest, ’Omi, when we come to the big tree. Are you cold?” he asked, for there was the chill of March in the wind, though the sun lay very warm in the sheltered places. “No. Who?” she asked, pointing a tiny hand at two riders turning the corner, a youth of about seventeen and a young girl. Their horses were spirited and the black groom following urged his horse.

The letters of Lady Duff Gordon are an introduction to her in person. She wrote as she talked, and that is not always the note of private correspondence, the pen being such an official instrument. Readers growing familiar with her voice will soon have assurance that, addressing the public, she would not have blotted a passage or affected a tone for the applause of all Europe. Yet she could own to a liking for flattery, and say of the consequent vanity, that an insensibility to it is inhuman. Her humour was a mouthpiece of nature. She inherited from her father the judicial mind, and her fine conscience brought it to bear on herself as well as on the world, so that she would ask, ‘Are we so much better?’ when someone supremely erratic was dangled before the popular eye. She had not studied her Goethe to no purpose. Nor did the very ridiculous creature who is commonly the outcast of all compassion miss having the tolerant word from her, however much she might be of necessity in the laugh, for Molière also was of her repertory. Hers was the charity which is perceptive and embracing: we may feel certain that she was never a dupe of the poor souls, Christian and Muslim, whose tales of simple misery or injustice moved her to friendly service.

Transporter to another time and land By readingfan Lucie Duff Gordon was an intriguing and adventurous 19th century woman who resided in Egypt for her health. She came to love the country and its people. Her accounts of the different ethnic groups and their relation to the British is interesting to say the least. I kept thinking of present day events and the changes in attitudes and power through the decades. I was so taken with this character that I read her biography!

Solo Seniors - Women Travelers By Kindle Customer I truly enjoyed reading about her solo adventures...it's nice to know there are others like myself that love traveling, and will go regardless if there is no partner to travel with. I have found that I've met wonderful people along the way, and others seem to be more apt to reach out and talk with you, to include you in... I too am a senior woman, and SenI am proud that we older women are not afraid to venture out (my mother thinks it's so inappropriate)...if I don't do it, I will be missing so much, so why not?...and if I go, I gain the beauty and joy of seeing other lands , and meeting new people....I expand my horizons...Gloria sets a great example to follow......I just wish she had mentioned a few things more, like what months she traveled, what year, and how old she was when she did this journey.....I particularly liked her travel through Costa Rica, because I had traveled there as well, and I have interest in Panama, so I found the descriptions helpful, and adding the cost in every day a plus to give an idea on what you can get by on if you are careful....again, depending on when the book was written

Great Stories of Ghost Hunting Around the Michigan Area By JBronder Book Reviews This book is about the South East Michigan Ghost Hunters Society (SEMGHS). You will follow along as the group investigates 13 different locations from a theater, cemetery, library, hotel, and many others. They talk about the investigation; different things that were seen heard and felt; and include notes. There are included pictures that were taken during the investigation, fun facts, and side notes to the investigations.I really enjoy watching the different programs on television of the ghost hunter groups. There are a couple of them. The part that I really like are those that go through and check to see if something could possibly be causing the phenomenon. I really liked how there were different things that have happened to the different people in the group. But I really liked how you get the sense that this doesn’t always happen so not to expect it. Plus the story of the little boy ghost in the beginning just gives me the creeps thinking about it.If you like ghost hunting and investigations I recommend checking this book out. It has great tips and recommendations but also makes it fun. It is a great book to read.I received Ghost Hunting in Michigan for free from Schiffer Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

A sweet romance inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. Though part of a series, this is a stand alone novel. When Anne de Bourgh discovers a family secret in an old letter, she is given two choices: Burn the letter and forget about it or leave Rosings and face disinheritance. How can a sickly lady past the bloom of youth, with no prospects and few friends, hope to stand on her own two feet? How can she learn more about her family’s past without causing a scandal which would forever cast a shadow over the de Bourghs? Luc Mauvier has led a life of freedom and success as a small theater owner in town. His tragic past has taught him to enjoy life and its pleasures to the fullest. When he meets Anne de Bourgh, she is opposite to everything he has ever known and he is soon reminded of how a gentleman should behave with a real lady. Can a tradesman win the heart of a lady? Even more important: How can he win Lady Catherine’s approval? What Anne reveals about her past gives her courage, but will it be enough?

A maid brings an old letter from her father to Anne’s attention and thus the plot of the book begins. Anne moves to London after being kicked out of Rosings and then tries to find out more about her father. She ends up meeting Luc and his sister. They in turn introduce her to a member of her family that she has never known. I won’t say anymore as I don’t want to reveal more of the book. I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first one. I’m eagerly awaiting book three.Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wholesome Entertainment!!! By Pippy Jones This follow-up story to Darcy's Ultimatum was a quick read that was fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. I had never had an opinion one way or the other about Anne de Bourgh until I read this series, but I like her. This author knows how to entertain and since I only read for enjoyment, this book fits the bill.I feel the need to address the 2-star reviewers comments as I wonder if she actually read the book. I checked and the author did not use the word "OKAY" nor did she use "KNIGHT". Just saying!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. What would you imagine for sickly weak Anne? Surprise! By S. L. Majczan 4.5 starsThis story brought me to tears at the end. Yet one must remember this is a variation and variations take great license with the story line and with characters and their behaviors. This is one that reveals a surprising twist, or should I say twists, from canon. I loved what Jennifer's imagination and inventiveness allowed her to write in this story. Saying that I also have to add that it is going to be very difficult not to write any spoilers here as so much was new and different. As we read in the book description: 1.) this book is part of a series about “cousins”. 2.) Anne is given a letter, a very old letter, a letter written after she was born. It FORCES her to make a decision, as stated. Here we have a new and different Anne. Here we begin to rejoice in this survivor and what she now makes of her life. You know, you must know, how Lady Catherine rules and reigns in her household, so hang on to your hats as you read of someone, Anne, not knuckling under to another of Lady C’s dictates. You will be cheering, but also wondering if Anne goes from depending on her mother for all her care and all her decisions OR if Anne will simply reach out to relatives and then switch residences upon the ultimatum here. But Anne’s handling of her long standing “engagement” with Darcy is another twist and gives her choice of where to go and upon whom to rely; a more limited range than one would think. Now we do meet new characters in this book. We meet a family friend, who introduces her to an unknown aunt and she then meets others who come to play very significant roles in providing Anne with a chance to not only mature but to learn and grow in her talents and in deciding her own future. There is not only Luc Mauvier but also his sister. There is this aunt and another relative. There are two maid servants who play parts in not only how “the letter” got into Anne’s hands but also in showing Anne how one must take one’s talents and build on them and in how one can look for and embrace opportunities, even ones which show up unexpectedly. As Anne says at about 83% of the way through the kindle book, “Every woman should have a purpose; a reason to get up and accomplish something good…”One thing that I kept pondering, though, was the air quality in London. Much was made of the fact that Lady Catherine would not allow air or sunshine into the rooms at Rosings. It was considered not healthy but then Anne’s health improves upon moving to London and going out, taking a walk (limited at first – she is still weak and of a poor constitution). Yet we read of how poor the air in London was at this time in history. I do believe Anne could have improved in health just getting out of bed and having an agenda for the day, but any mention of “taking the air” seems counterproductive in the purpose of regaining one’s health.I truly liked this story for Anne. Having read stories in which she dies off at an early age, I find this so much more acceptable. We even get a wedding scene and a hint as to the next story of a cousin: one of my favorite, usually secondary characters, in JAFF. This is a standalone story but I am glad I am reading all in the series.

Up to that time confessedly inferior to the Southern horsemen, they gained on this day that confidence in themselves and in their commanders which enabled them to contest so fiercely the subsequent battle-fields of June, July, and October.” - Major Henry B. McClellan, JEB Stuart's adjutant general In early June 1863, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia occupied Culpeper, Virginia, and after their victories at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville against armies twice their size, the Confederate troops felt invincible and anxious to carry the war north into Pennsylvania. One of the proudest was iconic cavalry leader JEB Stuart, who had filled in admirably for the mortally wounded Stonewall Jackson the previous month at Chancellorsville. Back in command of the cavalry, Stuart bivouacked his men near the Rappahannock River, screening the Confederate army against surprise Union attacks. Buoyed by his recent successes, Stuart held a field review on June 5, but when Lee couldn’t attend that one, he held another one in Lee’s presence on June 8. During that one, the Confederates paraded nearly 9,000 mounted troops and four batteries of horse artillery for review, which included mock battles near Brandy Station. Some of the cavalrymen and newspaper reporters at the scene complained that all Stuart was doing was “feeding his ego and exhausting the horses,” and he was referred to as a “headline-hunting show-off.” Meanwhile, Union Army of the Potomac commander Joseph Hooker interpreted Stuart's presence around Culpeper as a precursor to a raid on his army's supply lines. In response, he ordered his cavalry commander, Maj. General Alfred Pleasonton, to take a combined force of 8,000 cavalry and 3,000 infantry on a raid to "disperse and destroy" the 9,500 Confederates. Crossing the Rappahannock River in two columns on June 9, 1863 at Beverly's Ford and Kelly's Ford, the first infantry unit caught Stuart completely off guard, and the second surprised him yet again. In addition to being the largest cavalry battle of the war, the chaos and confusion that ensued across the battlefield also made Brandy Station unique in that most of the fighting was done while mounted and using sabers. One account of the battle noted, "Of the bodies that littered the field that day, the vast majority were found to have perished by the sword." After 10 hours of charges and countercharges that swept back and forth across Fleetwood Hill involving drawn sabers and revolvers, Pleasonton decided to withdraw his exhausted men across the Rappahannock River. Stuart immediately claimed a Confederate victory because his men had managed to hold the field and inflicted more casualties on the enemy while forcing Pleasonton to withdraw before locating Lee's infantry, but Stuart was trying to save face, and nobody else, including Lee, shared his view of the battle. The fact was that the Southern cavalry under Stuart had not detected the movement of two large columns of Union cavalry and had fallen prey to not one but two surprise attacks. Two days later, the Richmond Enquirer reported, “If Gen. Stuart is to be the eyes and ears of the army we advise him to see more, and be seen less. Gen. Stuart has suffered no little in public estimation by the late enterprises of the enemy.” Lee was now painfully aware of the increased competency of the Union cavalry, as well as the decline of the seemingly once-invincible Southern mounted armed forces under Stuart. Moreover, Stuart was now smarting from the negative publicity and the hit his reputation had taken at Brandy Station, and it would go on to have an impact on the ensuing battle of Gettysburg.
