I've lived in NJ all my life and read more than my share of books about the Beautiful Garden State (there's more to Joisey than Secaucus and Snookie) ...but this book focuses on the heart of Jersey. Asbury Park probably has more amazing history per square foot than any other town in the country and the author of this book captures it all and then some. The wonderful photos and interesting stories on every page highlight the famous, as well as the equally interesting but somewhat anonymous individuals that made Asbury Park unique. 2 Thumbs Up...5 Stars...Buy The Book!

Ostensibly, a run of the mill serial field guide, Tom Chesek’s “Legendary Locals of Asbury Park” is arguably the apotheosis of Jersey Shore raconteurism. I can only hope that in the future he’ll take on the larger project of a more comprehensive history of the Jersey Shore, from seedy, yet cinematic, Keansburg on Raritan Bay, all the way down the GSP to stately Cape May at Exit 0.Chesek’s concise, deconstructive bop prose conflates Smithsonian style historical research with winking nods to the author’s encyclopedic grasp of popular, and not so popular, music. Consequently, the book is a very entertaining read and, ultimately, a siren call to a famed beach town, once terminally at death’s door, where love’s labor has rekindled the spark of life.
