Matt Shane is a Harvard student and an early riser. He starts each day at his favorite coffee shop. Usually he has the shop to himself but on this morning there is a pretty Asian girl in his favorite booth. She is crying. Her name is Miyuki and she was to have flown on a non-stop flight from Tokyo to Boston but that flight was cancelled. Instead her routing took her from Tokyo to Los Angeles to JFK to LaGuardia and finally to Boston. She began her journey with ten one hundred dollar bills but several of those ended up in the pockets of dishonest cab drivers. She is discouraged and wants to return to Japan. Matt helps her and they fall in love. That's when the excitment begins. We meet Vito, a loveable Boston restaurant owner and Coach Durrell a Harvard football coach who is a lot less loveable. There is a kidnapping and, of course, the FBI. The second half of the story takes place in Japan. We meet Miyuki's family including mom and dad and younger brother, Kenji and sister, Kimiko. Yakuza, the Japanese mafia, play an important role in the book's second half. We get a good look at Japanese professional baseball, attitudes toward suicide and government corruption. Despite many distractions the romance thrives.

Insight into Love and Japan By Ruth Schmid A nice love story, exciting in the beginning as their love develops, and very exciting in the end as they travel back to Japan. I was intrigued by the descriptions of life in Japan from the viewpoint of the very wealthy. This is a book worthy of your time. You will enjoy it!

Brown mixes an unlikely group of characters and events into a quick moving and constant attention getting set of events. It is a fun read, and a learning experience. Highly recommended!

By Barbara "Miyuki, Harvard Girl" is highly recommended as a very enjoyable read. In fact, it would be perfect airplane reading. The characters are well drawn, and the plot highly developed and fast paced. The first chapter allows us to get hooked on the plot - who hasn't had problems in a foreign country? Most of us have also had the urge to help someone struggling in that situation. The cross-cultural elements comparing life in the East and West added to the flavor of the novel, and were encapsulated in the title. The airline descriptions of flight planning and airplane travels give us an insider's view of what is taking place. I especially enjoyed Chapter 29, "To Tokyo," where a flight to Japan turned into a saga in itself, with Matt's computer laptop battery smoking, and a consequent delay in Anchorage. The fight of good versus evil played heavily into "Miyuki's" themes, and the violent scenes were broadly drawn so we didn't have to skip over them so as not to "smell the blood." It is always gratifying when the bad guys get their comeuppances.Even if you don't have a trip planned, you can sit by the fire, fix yourself a cup of tea, invite the dog in, and indulge in a bit of armchair traveling while readying "Miyuki, Harvard Girl."
