Common Sense is a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in 1775–76 that inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain in the summer of 1776. The pamphlet explained the advantages of and the need for immediate independence in clear, simple language. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the beginning of the American Revolution and became an immediate sensation. It was sold and distributed widely and read aloud at taverns and meeting places. Washington had it read to all his troops, which at the time had surrounded the British army in Boston. In proportion to the population of the colonies at that time (2.5 million), it had the largest sale and circulation of any book published in American history. As of 2006, it remains the all-time best selling American title. Common Sense presented the American colonists with an argument for freedom from British rule at a time when the question of whether or not to seek independence was the central issue of the day. Paine wrote and reasoned in a style that common people understood. Forgoing the philosophical and Latin references used by Enlightenment era writers, he structured Common Sense as if it were a sermon, and relied on Biblical references to make his case to the people. He connected independence with common dissenting Protestant beliefs as a means to present a distinctly American political identity. Historian Gordon S. Wood described Common Sense as "the most incendiary and popular pamphlet of the entire revolutionary era".

Wiltshire looks large on the map of England, a great green county, yet it never appears to be a favourite one to those who go on rambles in the land. At all events I am unable to bring to mind an instance of a lover of Wiltshire who was not a native or a resident, or had not been to Marlborough and loved the country on account of early associations. Nor can I regard myself as an exception, since, owing to a certain kind of adaptiveness in me, a sense of being at home wherever grass grows, I am in a way a native too. Again, listen to any half-dozen of your friends discussing the places they have visited, or intend visiting, comparing notes about the counties, towns, churches, castles, scenery—all that draws them and satisfies their nature, and the chances are that they will not even mention Wiltshire.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable reading By Raul Bacigaluppi In this delightful book, Hudson chronicles his roamings through Wiltshire downs. He talked to old people, simple people, like peasants or shepherds, about what life was like in the beginning of nineteen century (the books was written by the end of that century). They talked to him, about their life, the people they knew, their landlords, their difficult moments, also about their poverty. If you like Hudson way of writing, or are interested in English social history, this book is for you. Maybe it should be read by natives or Wiltshire

Six hundred years on the same farm, James Rebanks left the farm for a university education and chose to return. He writes with the ability to weave his story in and out of the past and present state of sheep farming in England and the U.K. A must read for anyone interested or active in the stock dog world.

The writing is excellent and the story compelling. However I do believe that the copy is pirated. There is no publishing company listed. It is printed in a run on form, definitely not professional. That is diasppointing.

American Christians, weary of decades of entrenched partisan feuding, are increasingly distancing themselves from politics. Some, however, continue to turn toward the state and public policy to find solutions to the world's problems. The problem is that both responses allow a narrow vision of politics to determine the church's mission and ministries, which often ends up separating its commitment to personal faith from the pursuit of social justice--the King from the kingdom. Christians too easily forget that the church is inherently political, a community defined by its allegiance to a King, its citizenship in a new world, and its call to work alongside others in pursuit of a new way of life. The church needs a political vision that is more than blind acceptance or mere rejection of past models. It needs a positive vision that takes its cues about politics not from the nation-state but from another political reality: the kingdom of God. This book tells the stories of the visits of two researchers to five diverse congregations across the United States. From the megachurch energy of Rick Warren's Saddleback Church in California, to a young Emergent community in Minneapolis, to the politically active home of Martin Luther King in Atlanta, these stories illuminate the vastly different ways congregations understand and approach politics--and offer a glimpse of a new political imagination for today's church. "Whether they know it or not, churches perform their message in their way of life as an expression of the gospel, and this all means--as this exceptional study by two young, sophisticated observers contends--that every church is a political way of life. . . . This book may be used as an introduction to the politics of the kingdom or as a refresher for those who have already been thinking along this line, but what it is even more is a collection of keen insights into the realities of America's diverse church-as-politics life." --Scot McKnight, Professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary "The relationship between faith and politics is notoriously difficult. Yet Norris and Speers provide an accessible resource for congregations that want to learn how other churches navigate this dynamic. . . . At the same time, the book is not afraid to critique, as it offers a vision of political engagement faithful to the biblical mission of the church. This is a must-read for every congregation that desires to grow in ministry." --Jennifer M. McBride, Regents Chair of Ethics, Wartburg College "Norris and Speers offer an insightful and multi-storied account of religion and politics on the North American Protestant scene--one that moves us beyond church-state discussions and the various strategic debates on 'direct politicking' that preoccupy both liberal and conservative Christians." --From the Foreword by Charles Marsh "Kingdom Politics offers a critically important, next-generation look at the issue of how some U.S. Christians and congregations are breaking out of destructive paradigms for engaging (or fleeing) public life and finding more constructive models for a new era. Highly recommended!" --David P. Gushee, Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics, Mercer University Kristopher Norris is a Baptist minister and PhD candidate in Theology and Ethics at the University of Virginia. He holds degrees from UNC, Duke, and Emory, and once won an eighth-grade geography bee. Kris lives in Charlottesville, Virginia. Sam Speers studied Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, where he was also involved in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. He is a music lover and a former swim coach, and he knows every line from The Princess Bride. Sam also lives in Charlottesville.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Blends Politics and Faith in a Authentic Way By Kyle Literature that provides a wise discourse on both church and politics is difficult to find, which is why this book is such a breath of fresh air. Even when discussing difficult issues facing the church, such as political identity, support for gay marriage, and racial barriers, the authors analyze different churches’ approaches with understanding and not a drop of judgement. Very impressive. Especially valuable was how the authors described their own journey visiting the churches, not only in a physical sense, but also in a spiritual sense—it made the narrative refreshingly authentic and unpretentious. Leaving the churches aside, it was also nice how the authors included their own personalities in the story—although it sounded like they couldn't spend more than FIVE minutes together before launching into a brotherly debate on theology!I’m not sure if I could handle a trip with these guys, but I highly recommend Kingdom Politics.

Brave Faces is Mary Arden's story as she moves from her privileged English upbringing to dealing with the realities of World War II. Mary's memoir gives an insight into the changes in society that took place with the advent of war. As the Second World War breaks out, Mary's parents are determined that their daughter's privileged upbringing should continue, and that life should carry on as much as normal. She is sent to finishing school and becomes a debutante attending 'coming out' balls in London, despite the nightly bombing raids. However, Mary is determined to do her bit for the war effort, and volunteers to serve as a Red Cross Nurse, before joining the WRNS. Accepted into the WRNS, not as an officer, but as 'other rank', Mary has to learn to live a very different kind of life to the one she was brought up to expect. She is used to being chaperoned, only talking to men she has been 'introduced' to, so it's an almost impossible task for her Senior WREN Officer to find a suitable category for this naive girl. Mary finally becomes part of a new elite category known as Night Vision Testers, training the young pilots to see in the dark so they can land their planes on the deck of their aircraft carrier and not in the sea. As the war progresses, Mary moves from one Naval Air station to another. Her tasks become stranger than fiction and her duties are definitely outside her job description - and most probably outside the rules too. An evocative memoir about one woman's life from privilege to service, heartbreak to laughter.

It's Mary Arden's story of how the second world war affected her and changed her life. Arden is the pen name of Eve Wharton, who's now 91 and didn't think of writing until she was in her 80s.She had a privileged upbringing in a home where the silver dining cutlery was sent to the bank for safe keeping whilst the family was away on holiday. There were servants. At the outbreak of the war, her life continues as normal. She's sent to finishing school and returns to a debs ball. However, she wants to play her own part in the war effort and after a bit of Red Cross work, decides to enlist in the WRNS. She's one of the ranks and as such has to mix with a completely different group of people. The differences between the 'classes' are staggering and her account provides an interesting and honest slice of social history.Mary Arden was a lady ahead of her time. Although naive in many ways, she's also independent, resourceful and good natured and her account provides real insight into this very challenging period. Her heartbreak was real and her happiness well deserved. Well written and easy to read, I admire her courage in recording life story. It's a valuable resource.

Imagine the jazz age, the great depression,, WW11, finding all the new ways of the postmodern, and losing the great love of her life before his time. That she faces the world bravely is what defines the human.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A very difference point of view of World War 2 By Amandajane What a lovely surprise and treat Brave Faces turned out to be!The author uses the pen name Mary Arden, I do know what her real name is but I choose not to use it. Why you ask? If she had wanted to use it then she would have, she obviously had her reasons and it is not for us to question why. In Brave Faces she has shared so much of her life, and I feel we should be just grateful for that. I marvel at the fact that she started writing in her 80s and had this book was published at the age of 91!To say that British Mary Arden has a privileged life would be an understatement. She has a happy life, full of the finest things that life has to offer. Her family has servants, and when it's time for holidays which are usually abroad, their silverware and cutlery is so valuable it is stored in a bank for safekeeping.Whilst Mary is on a family holiday, ironically in Normandy, her father is given the news that war with Normandy is imminent and that they should leave as soon as possible. When the outbreak of war does happen, things in general do not change much for Mary. She doesn't need to worry about her father going to war due to him having only one lung and from constantly being gassed during World War 1. Mary is sent to finishing school and returns as a debutante with a full social calendar. Her parents try to keep things as normal as possible. However, how normal can things be when there are the nightly London bombings?Mary is determined as she is naïve and feels strongly of helping the war effort and joins the Red Cross which in turn leads for her to enlist in the WRNS (the wrens). I think even Mary is surprised when she is accepted but not as an officer. The senior Wren officer is really not sure what to do with this young woman, she is like not like any of the other Wrens, for example Mary is used to being chaperoned when in the presence of young men. As you can imagine that is very difficult for both Mary and the Senior Officer, the fact is war and men go together.Mary had a lot of adjusting and learning to do, it is almost like she is on another planet. To her credit she could have easily just walked away back to her comfortably sheltered life instead she learns from both men and women of different classes, about their lives, families, education and of course she learns the true horrors of war.Eventually, Mary is given a position in a new elite category as a Night Vision Tester. At first, I thought that meant she just had to make sure the "night goggles" weren't faulty. The importance of her job should not be understated, she is to train the young pilots to see in the dark so they are able to land their planes on the aircraft carriers in the middle of the Ocean. Once the pilots are trained she is to move on to the next Naval Base then the next and so on. With no end of the War insight she is given more and more tasks, many quite strange but more that that outside the rules.I was struck by the inner strength of Arden coming from a totally different background than most of her contemporaries. Mary is a courageous and brave woman who could have easily taken the easy road but instead she showed her love for her country and for fellow human beings. I wish therewere more people like Mary in the World because I am sure the World would be a better place.I enjoyed this book immensely and what I have described about this book is only the tip of the iceberg. Considering the grave topics, Mary tells her story in a very easy, laid back way and more than once I had a good giggle about some of situations she gets herself into. It gives a very different aspect than your usual run of the mill books about World War 2. I really liked reading it from a woman's point of view who actually was amongst the events of that time.

The region in far northeastern California encompassed by Lava Beds National Monument is often called the "Land of Burnt Out Fires." The name reflects a landscape created by fiery volcanic forces, including cataclysmic events that created more than 700 lava tube caves and an aboveground landscape shaped and fractured by lava flows and other geologic turmoil. Despite its tortured landscape, the region has also been a place of human habitation for thousands of years. Early natives traveled through the lava beds as part of their seasonal travels for food and shelter. The Modoc Indians' knowledge of that landscape, a natural lava fortress now known as Captain Jack's Stronghold, was used during the Modoc War of 1872 and 1873. Modocs, settlers, and others who followed--sheep ranchers, homesteaders, cave discoverers, tourists, spelunkers, and US Forest Service and National Park Service managers--have played prominent roles in creating the region's, and Lava Beds National Monument's, always evolving human history.

A lava beds introductory gem of a book By Daniel Woodhead III This book by my friend and longtime Klamath Falls newspaperman and historian, Lee Juillerat, is a wonderful introduction to Lava Beds National Monument south of Tule Lake at the California/Oregon border. It is a national park managed by the National Park Service and is filled with fascinating geological phenomena, as well as being the site of the 1873 Modoc Indian War which historians have described as one of the most significant Indian wars in American history.Lee's book on Lava Beds National Monument is easy reading and is well supplemented with an array of very interesting photographs of the lava beds. History buffs will particularly enjoy the chapter on the Modoc War which includes historic photographs by Eadweard Muybridge and sketches by William Simpson. If you are interested in, or planning a vacation to Lava Beds National Monument, Lee's book is an introductory must. And if you find the Modoc War particularly interesting, please consider also buying my own book on the Modoc War. titled "Modoc Vengeance" and listed here on Amazon.Daniel Woodhead, IIISan Francisco

About the Author I am a language fun and polyglot traveling the world to meet fascinating people and getting to know incredible places and customs. I find nothing is more rewarding than practicing languages with others, getting new friends and meeting new cultures and customs. Probably you feel the same way. As I keep learning new languages I realize that each one opens up a whole array of new experiences and a new way to look at the world. I decided to write about my experiences to share them with other people and to transform my lifestyle into a way of making a living. I hope I will be able to transmit my passion for languages and for people to those travelers who find that an unknown foreign language is a barrier hard to get by. I know how it feels and hope will be able to help travelers to get the most of their journeys. Journeys are life transforming experiences! Thanks for reading my books! Sarah Retter

I have not spoken Spanish in over 10 years, I have never been strong at speaking the language. This book is Authentic and full of useful Information. It explained phrases I had heard but never before understood. We also found it very helpful in getting a taxi driver to take us to the right store -- we'd use the Spanish word for what we'd need, and we'd end up at the right shop. This book is great... it goes way beyond the average tourist's 'quick reference guide' and thoroughly addresses all of those situations you find yourself in when traveling.

I was searching for a good Spanish speaking guide to prepare myself before starting my dream tour program. This book contains all mostly used phrases for all situations during travelling. Author has categorized phrases based on situations. Now,I am that this book will make an expert at Spanish and my tour program will be very interesting without much interference of travel guide for language problems.

I liked that it was grouped by subject so that things you might use in a conversation are all together in one place. It covered realistic subjects that come up in a travel situation. Looking at it ahead of time before our trip gave me a good quick review of my old high school Spanish and I felt much more prepared for simple interchanges with the locals.
