Wiltshire looks large on the map of England, a great green county, yet it never appears to be a favourite one to those who go on rambles in the land. At all events I am unable to bring to mind an instance of a lover of Wiltshire who was not a native or a resident, or had not been to Marlborough and loved the country on account of early associations. Nor can I regard myself as an exception, since, owing to a certain kind of adaptiveness in me, a sense of being at home wherever grass grows, I am in a way a native too. Again, listen to any half-dozen of your friends discussing the places they have visited, or intend visiting, comparing notes about the counties, towns, churches, castles, scenery—all that draws them and satisfies their nature, and the chances are that they will not even mention Wiltshire.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable reading By Raul Bacigaluppi In this delightful book, Hudson chronicles his roamings through Wiltshire downs. He talked to old people, simple people, like peasants or shepherds, about what life was like in the beginning of nineteen century (the books was written by the end of that century). They talked to him, about their life, the people they knew, their landlords, their difficult moments, also about their poverty. If you like Hudson way of writing, or are interested in English social history, this book is for you. Maybe it should be read by natives or Wiltshire

Six hundred years on the same farm, James Rebanks left the farm for a university education and chose to return. He writes with the ability to weave his story in and out of the past and present state of sheep farming in England and the U.K. A must read for anyone interested or active in the stock dog world.

The writing is excellent and the story compelling. However I do believe that the copy is pirated. There is no publishing company listed. It is printed in a run on form, definitely not professional. That is diasppointing.
