There was once a little princess whose father was king over a great country full of mountains and valleys. His palace was built upon one of the mountains, and was very grand and beautiful. The princess, whose name was Irene, was born there, but she was sent soon after her birth, because her mother was not very strong, to be brought up by country people in a large house, half castle, half farmhouse, on the side of another mountain, about half-way between its base and its peak.

The Princess and the Goblin, by George MacDonald

Amazon.com Review As always with George MacDonald, everything here is more than meets the eye: this in fact is MacDonald's grace-filled vision of the world. Said to be one of J.R.R. Tolkien's childhood favorites, The Princess and the Goblin is the story of the young Princess Irene, her good friend Curdie--a minor's son--and Irene's mysterious and beautiful great great grandmother, who lives in a secret room at the top of the castle stairs. Filled with images of dungeons and goblins, mysterious fires, burning roses, and a thread so fine as to be invisible and yet--like prayer--strong enough to lead the Princess back home to her grandmother's arms, this is a story of Curdie's slow realization that sometimes, as the princess tells him, "you must believe without seeing." Simple enough for reading aloud to a child (as I've done myself more than once with my daughter), it's rich enough to repay endless delighted readings for the adult. --Doug Thorpe

About the Author George MacDonald (I824-1905) was born and educated in Scotland. A poet and novelist, he is the author of more than fifty books, including Phantastes (l858), Dealing with the Fairies (1667), The Princess and the Goblin (1871), and The Princess and Curdie (1882). Having once declared, "I do not write for children, but for the childlike, whether of five, or fifty, or seventyfive," he is today best remembered as the creator of numerous beloved fantasies and fairy tales.Jessie Willcox Smith (1863-1935) was one of the most popular and successful American illustrators of the early twentieth century. A student at Howard Pyle's Brandywine School of American Illustration, her hundreds of magazine illustrations and more than forty illustrated books include Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses (1905), Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies (1916), and George MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind (1919) and The Princess and the Goblin (1920).

I agree with Lewis' assessment when it comes to "The Princess and the Goblin." Anyone who reads this book with profit by having done so.First, and perhaps most importantly "The Princess and the Goblin" is a delightful story. There is a lot of the "just plain fun reading" stuff going on in this story. There is also a lot more.MacDonald has buried a lot of treasures within the cave walls of his story. If the reader looks carefully as they follow the fates of Irene and Curdie, they will find these jewels just sitting there shining in the darkness, ready to be mined. There are nuggets of wisdom to be gained here in the dialogue, the narration, and in the overall arch of the story.More than this, MacDonald's story features the best of what was Romantic literature and blends it with the greatest characteristics of fairy tales--then he turns convention on its head. Some examples:-Whereas in fairy tales wisdom is associated with the old and knowledgeable, wisdom is here associated with innocence.-While in traditional tales, it is the hero who saves the princess, here the princess must rescue the hero.-Fans of modern fantasy may be used to Providential Guidance being related to male literary figures such as Tolkien's Gandalf, Lewis' Aslan. Here the figure is Feminine--the Grandmother. In the process of playing off of and twisting traditional Romantic literature and fairy tales MacDonald manages to transcend both genres and create a truly original work of wonder.I recommend the "Princess and the Goblin" most highly. Get it today. Just be careful that you don't pick up an abridgment--they tend to rip out the heart of the tale in an attempt to make the text more modern (neutered).

Cared for by her nurse Lootie, she lives in a mountain farmhouse while her father rules over the region from a mountain top castle. The local folk work as miners but are beset by the Goblins who inhabit the underground. Irene is saved from the Goblins by Curdie, a thirteen year old miner, and she in turn saves him. The whole thing is told in a pleasant conversational style and is filled with humor, word games, magic, derring-do, and pure wonderment.George MacDonald, a Congregational minister turned novelist, who seems nearly forgotten now, was one of the seminal figures in the development of Fantasy. His influence on other Fantasy authors is obvious, he was a childhood favorite of JRR Tolkein, who especially liked this book, and C.S. Lewis named him one of his favorite authors. His own stories draw on many of the themes and characters of classical European fairy tales. But where they were often merely horrific and meaningless, MacDonald adds a layer of Christian allegory. Thus, Irene and Curdie are eventually saved by a thread so slender that you can't even see it, but which leads them back to safety, teaching Curdie that you sometimes have to believe in things that you can't see.The book would be interesting simply as a touchstone of modern fiction, but it stands up well on its own and will delight adults and children alike.GRADE: A

Dover Edition is not Unabridged, as marked on cover By Unity Dienes I have two copies of this wonderful book in front of me...the Dover Juvenile Classics edition and the beautiful hardcover by Macmillan. Not only does the Dover edition omit all the sweet pictures, but right from the very first page it omits a sweet exchange between "Mr. Author" and an unnamed interlocutor--reminiscent of the story interruptions by the "real" Christopher Robin and the narrator of the Pooh stories. If something has obviously been cut out right from the first page, I'd bet other passages have been cut out, too. Perhaps this is unabridged from some version of the story, but it is definitely not the most complete text available. Stick to the hardcover or deluxe versions of the text for the real thing.

It was a wonderful country and while it hasn’t changed as far as being a stable place to visit, other countries in Southeast Asia back then were not places an American could go or should go unless sanctioned by Uncle Sam. I am so glad I can now go to Vietnam and Laos and Cambodia. Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia are also included in this book. The author, Antonio Araujo, has done some excellent research on this book listing some incredible places to stay on a budget. He has the book set up by city within a country, 50 cities, and has at least two hostels for each city, so there’s quite a bit of research in this book. He has the name and address of each hostel, a clickable map, a rating, the price per night and a clickable Book Here link so you can make your reservation through Hostelworld. Plus he goes into quite a bit of detail about that particular hostel. The hostels are set up along the backpacking trail that runs through Southeast Asia that people have been traveling for over four decades. It starts in Thailand, through Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and back to Thailand. And then on to other coutries. Some of the hostels charge as little as $3 while some go up to close to $20, still a bargain is you ask me.

I am intending to visit Southeast Asia and was unsure where to start when it came to booking hotels in the various places I am looking at visiting. Armed with my map I am having great fun already looking up the places mentioned by the author. One of the great things about this book is that it gives great descriptions of the hotels, their location, the sort of district they are in, and how quiet or lively they are. It also gives prices although I realise these may vary as time goes by but is still a useful indication. So you know you are up to date with everything, each hotel as a link which gives a map, pictures, description and booking information.Somehow I think I will be hooked. I visited Singapore a few years back, and the hotels in this book has bought the memories flooding back and somehow I think there will have to be a lot more trips to Southeast Asia.

Not only does it list the best hostels by city and provide useful information for each, but each one also contains a link to a map so you can scope out the area on your own. This is something I haven't seen in similar books. I highly recommend it for anyone who is planning to visit this region and wants to make the most out of their stay.

The variation was satisfactorily handled, as were the characters vis'a'vis the originals--I guess that's called "canon." My difficulty with this book, as with far too many of this genre, was the sloppy grammar, particularly in relationship to the punctuation. For me, this fault costs a star. It's irritating to pause and mentally edit the mistakes. In the paperbacks, I just make the changes, if I have a pencil handy, but at least if I read the book later--as I often do--the changes have been made.I did enjoy the story enough to look forward to other tales by Ms. Grix.

OK, it's how the author worked the circumstances that were a little different. It was a quick read with no real angst in comparison to some P&P variations. I didn't mind the plot or writing - it just didn't draw me in. Bland.

By Cynthia Ross This was the perfect length for a couple hours of free time, and an inventive variation on the aftermath of Darcy's disastrous first proposal. I've read so many P&P variations that some start sounding repetitive, but this was a fresh new take. I appreciated the well-written dialogue and graceful word choices. The characters stayed true to JA's vision. I noticed a skillful interweaving of original (or close to original) snippets from P&P, used in the context of this new story, something that always enhances the reading experience for me. I will be reading more from this author!Borrowed from Kindle Unlimited - thank you, Amazon!

True to life ghost stories you may or may not have heard of By Kindle Customer Haunted America FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Most Haunted Houses, Cemeteries, Battlefields, and More by Dave Thompson, was received direct from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  I am generally not one to read ghost stories, though I will partake in Haunted Walks, etc in New Orleans , Savannah, GA or wherever I may be as it gets me out of the hotel.  I requested this book hoping it was exactly what is is, a run down of ghost stories, many that I have never heard of and fairly easy to search for.  as others have stated, many of the stories have greater detail than others, but the ones with little detail can be searched very easily via the algore invention of the Internet.  If you are anyone you are making purchases for enjoy true to life ghost stories, please buy this book, you will read about ghostly events you had never heard of and then realize most any place, room, item may have a ghost story attached to it.

The state by state Gazetteer chapters often just have a few lines about the hauntings without much background. For the states I was familiar with I noticed many of the most famous hauntings were left out. The rest of the book is divided into chapters about particular hauntings, like houses, hotels, lighthouses, hospitals etc. These stories have quite a bit of detail and are interesting. I also enjoyed the chapters about spiritualism and spirit photography. This book is illustrated with lots of wonderful photographs. Even though many of the stories were ones I have read before there were a few that were new to me. If you enjoy things that go bump in night and reading about them you will enjoy this book. Some of the stories are scary so read with the lights on. EnjoyI received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review

This book is a historic novel, it tells the story of a small group of Dutch tenant farmers during their long eight-year struggle of the Revolutionary War. I call this book “The Sawmill River Valley War” because it always was more than just a revolution. It was also a civil war. Some might even say it was a class war between the tenants farming the manors and the powerful royal ruling class of people living in the city of New York and along the north shore of Long Island Sound. The stories of James Fennimore Cooper and Washington Irving have created an American mythology around the little Dutch communities between the Hudson and Sawmill (Nepperhan) Rivers. The Little villages of Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford and Greenburgh (now Irvington), New York were the centers of this activity. The Old Dutch Church and its Burying Ground in Sleepy Hollow are now the key to this mythology. However, numerous true stories of real heroes and real villains abound in these stony hills along the Tappan Zee. Who has not heard of the name Benedict Arnold or his unlucky British confidant, Major Andre? The people behind these myths were real and their stories were true. I have told the story through the eyes of my ancestors and a few of their friends. The key figures are the men of the Westchester County First Militia, commanded by Colonel Hammond, whose house still stands just to the northeast of Elmsford, New York. I have used the names of real people, because I do not believe their true story has ever been told. To the extent possible, I have based it upon the actual experiences of these men as revealed by the local history. Many of the sources I have used were written interviews and statements taken from the old Revolutionary War records of soldiers and their children. Time may have obscured some of the details. I may have made errors in some of my assumptions also. However, the story is there, carved on the stone monuments and forgotten plaques. I hope you enjoy it. Remember this book is a novel. We were not there, so all the dialogue and some actions are fictitious. However, it is based on what I believe represents the true experiences of these men and their families. It should be a valuable asset to young re-enactors or students of the Revolutionary War.

The Sawmill River Valley War, by Roger L. Jewell

About the Author Roger Jewell, author of “The Sawmill River Valley War,” was born and raised in Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, College of Natural Resources in 1962 with a BS in Forestry Management. He completed a 32-year career as a professional forester with the US Forest Service, most of which was in the Lake Superior area. During the last 12 years, before his retirement in 1994, he was the District Ranger at the Sault Ste. Marie Ranger District of the Hiawatha National Forest. He has been interested in his family history all his life. He has spent over 50 years rooting out the interesting stories. When he found his ancestors buried in The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery less than a hundred feet from where people say the headless horseman was buried, he had to look deeper. This fascinating story was what emerged. This is his third book. His first book, “Ancient Mines of Kitchi-Gummi,” was published in 2000. It is in its 4th printing this year, with over 4000 copies sold. In 2001, he produced his second book, “Riding the Wild Orb.” A book about extreme fire weather. Roger lives in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with his wife Mary who illustrated this book.

A real jewel of a book about the Revolutionary War & the Hudson River Valley By Cathy Sears Anyone who loves adventure and American History should buy The Sawmill River Valley War. I've read this lively historical fiction trice now, and learned something each time. Author Roger Jewell has expertly woven Revolutionary War-era records by six New York militia men and their families, including that of his ancestors, into a riveting story that offers a real sense of place. That place happens to be the Lower Hudson Valley in Westchester County, chock full of charming Hudson River villages. Jewell rewinds the clock back 250 years to a time when guerrilla warfare was waged in these gentle hills and valleys by the Brits and its allies against Washington's local militia for eight long years. War tactic aficionados will appreciate this well-researched book for sure.As for me, I so love the sense of place Jewell provides throughout the novel: Whenever I drive alongside the Sawmill River near Tarrytown these days, I'm reminded that this parkway was once a mere path, where John Jewell hid his horse and climbed up a ridge to spy on the "cow-boy" Loyalist soldiers. The book is chock full of identifiable sites that bring Revolutionary history alive - just be sure to keep your thumb on the maps in the book as you follow the storyline. The Sawmill River Valley War is a great read and a real contribution to the history of the Revolutionary War. Bottomline, Roger Jewell has written a real jewel of a book.

"BUT the man's almost dead." The words stung John Hare's fainting spirit into life. He opened his eyes. The desert still stretched before him, the appalling thing that had overpowered him with its deceiving purple distance. Near by stood a sombre group of men. "Leave him here," said one, addressing a gray-bearded giant. "He's the fellow sent into southern Utah to spy out the cattle thieves. He's all but dead. Dene's outlaws are after him. Don't cross Dene."

The Beginning of Greatness By Charles Wheeler Perhaps, with the exception of Riders of the Purple Sage, Heritage of the Desert is the best western Zane Grey ever wrote. It combines every thing one expects to find in the genre, and then adds a little bit more you don't expect to find. It is the basic story of a young man, John Hare, who has come west to regain his health and to find his place in life only to be branded "Dene's spy" and becomes a hunted man. There is the Mormon element, only in this book they receive favorable treatment by Zane Grey; there are animal heros; a faithful Indian companion to the heroine, a half-Indian girl, Mescal; rustlers and land thieves; a favored son gone bad; and the canyon country of Utah described as only the master detailer can depict it in all of its glory and spendor. With this book Zane Grey set the standard by which he himself had to live up to with each succeeding novel, and HE DID.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Heritage of the Desert By William B. Rose A classic western novel. Zane Grey is one of the best writers of the old west. His novels were written of the time when the west was being populated by people from the east. Each had a story behind them and how they got there. Zane Grey had spent time in the localities of his stories and writes in the venacular of the people. He never fails to enertain and keeps you interest burning. I enjoy Zane Grey and Louis Lamore as western writers.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. How could you not enjoy another Zane Grey book By Ron Zane Grey is prolific. He has the ability to put you there with his vivid descriptions. I have not been to the north rim of the Grand Canyon until I read this book. The characters, mainly Mormons, who save the life of a young lunger. The family also has a half Navajo woman they raised. a worthless son who goes against his family and and assortment of rustlers with a couple of these guys who still have some morals. It is the usual story of greed. There is a wild stallion, a part wolf dog and a droopy eared burro who contribute to the story.. The Navajos are portrayed in a positive way and good since I have enjoyed interacting with them in the past. Overall it is a good read.

The culture of the Philippines is very much misunderstood by foreigners. Many people from other countries think that the culture in the Philippines is very similar to western culture. After all, the Philippines was ruled by the Spanish for 400 years, followed by nearly 50 years of American rule. Of course the culture would have been influenced by the west, and thus the Filipino way of thinking and acting would be very western. Wrong. It doesn’t take long of living in the Philippines to realize how wrong that thinking is. The fact is that the culture of the Philippines is very complex, and also very different from western cultures. It is not easy for foreigners to understand, even after years of living in the Philippines. At the time of this writing, I have lived in the Philippines for nearly 15 years, and I feel that I have a pretty good understanding of Philippine culture, but it took many years to gain that knowledge. In fact, I was able to gain a lot of understanding of Philippine culture because I had a private tutor who taught me how to speak Bisaya (one of the Philippine languages), and she also spent significant time explaining Philippine culture to me as part of the courses. In this book, I will lay out the tenets of the culture of the Philippines for you. I will also give you some real life examples of Philippine culture at play, and how I dealt with the various real life situations. I truly believe that learning these cultural lessons is a big factor in enjoying a good life in the Philippines. If you try to live in the Philippines without an understanding of the things in this book your life will be a constant series of frustration, misunderstanding in dealing with Filipinos and a general unhappiness with living in the Philippines.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Introducing Filipino Culture! By David Dennis This book goes through the basics of Philippine culture, such as the emphasis on the group versus the individual, and the key role of shame and saving of face. I thought the material was well presented but could have used more examples. For instance, he says the key tenets of Philippine culture work together in interesting and possibly deadly ways, but lists few ways in which this happens. The book has important warnings to potential Philippine entrepreneurs. For instance, you need to understand why things are as they are, before assuming that you have the right ideas and trying to change long-standing practices. When I was on Philippine mailing lists, my conclusion was that it's just about impossible to make a living in this country with the wages and prices on offer. If you have a good business idea and it is successful, Filipinos will copy you and undercut your prices, and because any Western person is high overhead, they can drive you out of business effortlessly. You need to be selling something or providing a service appreciated by those in the West. Bob doesn't mention how he makes his money, only that he is a successful entrepreneur, but obviously he makes money through his Philippine guides and web sites. This shows us that he is indeed smart, but not as knowledgeable as one might hope about Philippine business per se.I visited the Philippines for three weeks in 2006, which certainly does not make me an expert. I was a little surprised that some real frustrations I felt when I was there were not covered. For instance, stores are often out of even the simplest things like, in my case, Coke Light, their equivalent of Diet Coke. Furthermore, it tasted funny compared to the US version.Alas, one really important topic was not covered, because he had (and still has) a Filipina wife he met while in the USA. It is briefly mentioned that if you want a date, all you need to do is visit a shopping mall and women will approach you. But that is covered as a hazard, since he assumes you are already married, like him. I suspect the most attractive thing for most guys visiting the country is the abundance of women interested in western men(*). Information, perhaps by guest authors, on how the Philippine dating process works, and how you can best take advantage of the feminine abundance that is available, would be enormously helpful for many men.I enjoyed reading this, but it was perhaps too obviously a bunch of blog posts combined into a book. The author was always trying to provoke his audience, with phrases like "What do you think of this?" That looks really strange, almost like a cop-out, in a book format where you can't read or write blog comments! In the future, I would hope that when he creates another edition of the book, he takes some of that stuff out and adds some of the best comments and his reaction to them.(*) Or, generally, Filipino men interested in Western women, an increasingly common situation. Or men interested in Westen men, women interested in Western women, etc, etc. Let's just say that romance is generally in the air, and although these people initially want you because of your money, if you are a good person, they typically form loving relationships with you where the money is just one factor of their appreciation of you.

I enjoyed the details about the larger cities, but there was little practical info on distances, location of water fountains, or pilgrim etiquette in alberges and so forth. Also little info on churches and religious services. Pretty secular and portrays the Way as more of a vacation than a pilgrimage.

It looks like each chapter was pulled from some other source and compiled together. You keep seeing references to the same things multiple times. It was good information, and reasonably well written. But I can't help feel that it took too long to read for the amount if information received. A good editor to slash out the redundant parts and do a better job of compiling the information into a more coherent order and timeline would have been welcome.

But it's not just a compilation of facts. It contains an adequate number of anecdotal entries to make it truly readable and enjoyable.I spent 36 plus years in the aircraft/spacecraft industry, have always been interested in aircraft and their history, so was thoroughly engrossed with Gordon's recounting of the "History of Flight."
