1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Holiday Tales By Amazon Customer This book contains two British-style holiday tales--meaning the stories take place over summer vacation. The two stories are:The Seven Campbells: Seven brothers decide to create a garden for their sick mother, and lean several valuable lessons about the value of hard work along the way.Cecil's Memorable Week: Cecil gets poor marks in school and looses his scholarship ("exhibition"). He has to deal with his feelings about disappointing his father, loosing his dreams and starting at a less prestigious school.Overall I thought the two stories were good, although the second one was a little too religious for my tastes (lots of lectures and stuff about God's way of teaching). I think that a younger audience would get more out of them, because they are both very moral tales, and adults are generally past the point of learning the value of hard work (eventually you've either got it or you haven't), but at the same time there are a bunch of old-fashioned concepts in the book that you should be prepared to discuss if you're reading the book to or with your child (like how they had to pay for school, and not all the kids could go at the same time, ect; nothing bad). You could, of course, try to get your child to read this on their own, but I think by the time they are old enough to get the concepts and older words, they're going to be too old to read things recommended to them by adults, so good luck with that.As for formatting on the kindle version; there is an active Table of Contents, although it's a chart and I found it a wee bit tricky to get the whole thing to show at times. The chapters are linked to as well as the stories. There's a few captions from missing pictures, but not enough to be a bother. The page numbers were left in the text (I hate that), and the first letter of each story/chapter was dropped, causing occasional minor confusion.

Excerpt from Across East African Glaciers: An Account of the First Ascent of KilimanjaroIn the matter of geographical exploration, which may be said to constitute the groundwork of the successful development of all countries, German East Africa has not hitherto shared the advantages enjoyed by our colonies on the western side of the continent. There, and more especially in our Protectorate of the Cameroons, the work of geographical research has been systematically carried out under Government supervision and at Government expense, whereas the exploration and exploitation of East Africa have been left entirely to the more limited resources of commercial companies. In all the expeditions which have penetrated the region since the first delimitation of the various spheres of interest, the interests of Geography and of Science in general have been of secondary importance to the making of treaties and the establishment of stations. It seemed to me, therefore, that, since Government showed no signs of moving in the matter, the work of geographical research in East Africa must be taken up by private individuals, I resolved to devote myself and my means to it forthwith; and in the course of three expeditions I have done my best to make known the districts geographically the most interesting and colonially the most valuable.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Amazon Customer For me, I am not that much into fiction or short stories, yet this book I found was interesting and entertaining. The stories are quite short and end well. The story that I liked the best is called The Widower, loved the ending! If you like short stories and fiction, then you may consider this book as it does not take that long to read and it is entertaining I found.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing History Book By Amazon Customer This book is so eye-opening and interesting. It is very relevant to what is happening in the Middle East today. The author starts back in the days before Islam began, which definitely helps the reader develop an understanding of the Arab and Muslim cultures. As the book progresses through history, the reader learns the "why" of the distinct outlook of the Middle East nations. Toward the end of the book, the reader reaches the modern times and with it, the atrocities committed by people still alive today. This book gives an in-depth view of what happened and why, which is very helpful because it is hard to find a simple, easy to read account of what happened during that time. The last events the book cover are the successes and failures of America, as well as the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent War on Terror. The chapter about the 9/11 attacks is particularly well written and makes the reader think. A very, very good second book by a insightful history author.

Watson M.D. is looking for reasonable lodgings. So too Sherlock Holmes (described as cold blooded in outlook). A letter requests help from Holmes. Drebber was found dead in an empty house, no wound on the body, but blood in the room. Holmes and Watson inspect the scene; Holmes explains his deductions. An advertisement is placed in the “Found” column of a newspaper. Detective Gregson visited Holmes to explain how he solved the murder. Lestrade arrives to tell of another murder: Stangerson, Drebber’s secretary! Gregson’s suspect could not have done it. Holmes shows his brilliance by his surprise introduction of the murderer! Part 2 tells about the events that preceded these murders. Chapter 7 explains Holmes’ actions in reasoning backwards. This story introduced Sherlock Holmes to an audience that never tired of these stories. Note the dialogue followed by explanatory comments. More modern stories use mostly dialogue to carry the story along and bring out the facts. The solution occurs in the last chapters. The use of an exotic American locale was a way to add interest. Background descriptions are sparse. It tells why a man can have a “florid face”, a medical fact. This was the beginning of the “Sherlock Holmes” series of stories.

The indignant and frightened thoughts of a good man who is, suddenly and inexplicably, dying: this is the crux of The Death of Ivan Ilyich, composed by Leo Tolstoy in the period just following his vehement conversion to a more virulent form of Christianity. A sharp criticism of the mediocre – and in Tolstoy’s view, meaningless – life being played out by an emerging middle class in Russia, Ivan Ilyich was written as a kind of warning against complacency masked as contentedness and a call for his readers to contemplate the possible meaninglessness of their own lives.

If you think Tolstoy can only produce blockbusters like War and Peace and Anna Karenina, I assure you he can pack just as much meaning into a novella like Ivan Ilyich, which can be read easily in barely an hour. Not that you should try to speed-read your way through it; careful reading will be rewarded. This Kindle edition is not up to the standard of another Tolstoy book I just read, the Carefully Crafted Classics version of Anna Karenina. In the latter, there are several embedded footnotes that provide context, and every use of French is translated in brackets immediately following their appearance. In Ivan Ilyich, the French is simply set off by asterisks with no translation. Also, there are no explanatory footnotes at all; perhaps the compilers of this edition thought none were necessary. There are multiple typos, most of them involving the lack of capitalization at the start of a sentence. A few words, however, are wrong ("camp" instead of "came," for example). There are four essays that start this edition: on Tolstoy, on Tolstoy as Writer, on Tolstoy's Place in European Literature, and Works From 1886 to 1906. These are all interesting if rather old-fashioned, and much can be learned from them. There are a few formatting glitches that result in sentence fragments and hinder understanding. There are no serious errors, except as noted above, in the actual text of Ilyich.Bottom line: The price is right. Buy this Kindle edition, make allowances for the typos, and read it slowly. Somewhat depressing but definitely worth the effort.

This novella starts slowly but as the net begins to tighten around Ivan Ilych it becomes hard to put down. His bursts of irrational hope in the face of death are heart rending. His recognition that much of his adult life has been wasted chasing after status gives him a sense of nobility at a time when his dignity has been taken from him. In accompanying Ivan Ilych to the very edge of the abyss we look into our own future and see what awaits us there. This book feels very authentic and only a very hard heart would fail to be moved by its pathos

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Review for Ivan Ilych By LB Song The marvel of Tolstoy is his instinctive grasp of the desperate choices humans face in life.He has an uncanny skill in both portraying our ability to love and hate, as well as our motivations and fears. When reading his stories, I often feel myself completely succumbing to his world, as if I've known the characters my whole life. The deep emotional and intellectual resonance of his works stay with me long after I close the pages.Such a work is The Death of Ivan Ilych, a short story published in 1886.In it, the reader can see the roots of the moral questions that Tolstoy himself will wrestle with his whole life. The primary question being: what is a good life? For Ivan Ilych, he had answered this question by leading a life that was, "the most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible". A dutiful Russian bureaucrat, his navigated life by relying on the good sense of society to decide what was proper. His chief pleasure came from a sense of his own power over inferiors, and secondary pleasures from playing bridge and indulging in bourgeoisie tastes at home.Yet throughout this innocent ascendance in social position, there were cracks that betrayed a denial of the truth underneath the life of "legality, correctitude, and propriety". The truth at last manifested itself in the form of physical and psychological pain, plaguing him endlessly and making life more miserable than death. Faced with this curse and sensing death's close presence, Ivan Ilych began to wonder, "What if my whole life had been wrong?".Ilych looked backed at his life, and realized suddenly, "all that for which he had lived- and saw clearly that it was not real at all, but a terrible and huge deception which had hidden both life and death. This consciousness intensified his physical suffering tenfold."The book ends without answering the question of what is the right life, and the only clue the reader is left with is the fresh and sunny image of Gerásim, a peasant in Ilych's household. Gerásim alone sympathized with his master's pain. Yet, his simple nature was unperturbed by the thought of death, and presumably his close relationship with nature allowed him to view it as a natural cycle. In Gerásim's character, one can see Tolstoy's admiration for the life-affirming powers of the countryside, which is echoed in Anna Karenina and other works.Tolstoy peeled back the layers of ordinary life to remonstrate against its lack of meaning, but because he was just as human as his characters, he could not show the path to a correct life. He leaves us with the image of Ivan Ilych screaming during his last days in anguish, encapsulating a hidden existential malaise that Tolstoy would struggle with his whole life.thelittlebirdsong.com

If you look at a Map of the World, you will see, in the left-hand upper corner of the Eastern Hemisphere, two Islands lying in the sea. They are England and Scotland, and Ireland. England and Scotland form the greater part of these Islands. Ireland is the next in size. The little neighbouring islands, which are so small upon the Map as to be mere dots, are chiefly little bits of Scotland,—broken off, I dare say, in the course of a great length of time, by the power of the restless water.

Charming and blissfully opinionated By booklover I never appreciated Charles Dickens as such a charming writer until I read this book, so after reading this, as an adult, I went back to his most familiar books and found that I still enjoyed this one best! It is written like he is an oral storyteller and is so engrossing as to make it difficult to put down. I originally thought due to the title that I would just read it aloud to my boys but I found when they had fallen asleep I couldn't stop and have since read this book at least three times and bought a used copy for all my nieces and nephews. The history is very one sided and from an Englishman's point of view he has a poor opinion of his royals with the Great Alfred being the first and last king of any esteem. His descriptions of the wars with the thousands of dead contrast sharply with the "clean" wars of today. Fields with thousands lying slaughtered is incomprehensible. Life was so cheap then at least as described by Dickens. This is such an engrossing history but with so much strong opinion it certainly wouldn't pass muster in todays historical circles which is part of why it is so fun and dare I say naughty to read. One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read!

As an adult I have enjoyed reading the book for pure pleasure. My two teenage daughters have used this book numerous times for school projects, especially for their history and compostion classes.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. How I came to love history By GoldenAger When I grew up our household had a set of books by Charles Dickens. I progressed from filling the endpapers with infantile scribbles to actually reading some. My two favorites were A Christmas Carol and a Child's History of England. I read and reread this book many times. What drew me in was the sweep of history from King Arthur to just before Victorian times told in incredibly colorful prose. Of course, the book's title tells it all. This is the exact opposite of academic history. Here, there are no pages long footnotes giving dry scholarly arguments pro and con. Nor is it like modern textbooks pushing anachronistic agendas in a heavy handed manner. No, this is history told by a great novelist for the purpose of helping young people appreciate the history of their civilization. This is precisely the effect it had on me. The book captures history through the telling of tales, legends, and people. The prose is, often quite vivid. I always remember this phrase: "and he was tied to a horse, taken to the Isle of Ely where his eyes were pulled out of his head..." No kid, raised on slam, bang, pow movies and comic books could miss the point here. History is not for the faint-hearted. One of Dickens' strengths as a writer has been to show that we live in a world of consequences.Because of this book, I learned to love history. Not history as memorization of dates, but history as the actions and reactions of living, breathing people. Rereading this story today is just as exciting a trip as it was 6o years ago, when I was in 5th grade. And...you can't beat the price on Kindle.

About the Author Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, and philosopher, who is best known for his works Waldena treatise about living in concert with the natural worldand Civil Disobedience, in which he espoused the need to morally resist the actions of an unjust state. Thoreau s work heavily reflects the ideologies of the American transcendentalists, and he has long been considered a leading figure in the movement along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and, at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who changed his views later in life). In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

It is brief and to the point. I have traveled some in Mexico and the tips about that country are spot on, including cultural differences, dealing with money and banks, laws, lodging, and fuel. The last section of the book, spanish, contains a very practical if brief but very clearly presented guide to useful phrases.Well worth the money.

Silver I'll be traveling back to Melbourne for vacation and it's been seven or so years since I've been. This travel guide is perfect for helping me plan our vacation as well as providing both small pocket sized maps as part of the book and an attached map as well. I love that I can slip this book in my purse. It contains helpful information like the cost of admission for some places (the aquarium for example) as well as that you want to go to Queen Victoria Market on a Sunday when there are more artisan vendors for souvenir style shopping.I'm only about 50 pages into the book and already have a list of places I want to visit and might want to visit depending on how much free time and money I can afford to spend. This book is helpful but to the point. Don't expect suggestions on when to visit, travel visas, and other information that you can expect from the full-size books. It was exactly what I needed. Would recommend for tourists.

I have called this little collection of articles which I have written “THREE THINGS” because to me there seem to be just three essentials to strive after in life. Truth—Common Sense and Happiness. To be able to see the first enables us to employ the second, and so realise the third. And in these papers I have tried to suggest some points which may be of use to others who, like myself, are endeavouring to reason out ideas to a good end.
