Nearly a century after it's printing (and more than a century after the first printing) the book is highly browsable, a light but meaningful read in one or several pages at a sitting. Poetry that truly stands the test of time. The little old poem that nobody readsBlooms in a crowded space,Like a ground-vine blossom, so low in the weedsThat nobody sees it's face-Unless, perchance, the reader's eyeStares through a yawn, and hurries by,For no one wants, or loves, or heeds,The little old poem that nobody reads. The little old poem that nobody readsWas written - where?- and when?Maybe a hand of goodly deeds Thrilled as it held the pen;Maybe the fountain whence it cameWas a heart brimmed o'er with tears of shame,And maybe it's creed in the worst of creeds-The little old poem that nobody reads. But, little old poem that nobody reads,Holding you here aboveThe wound of a heart that warmly bleedsFor all that knows not love,I well believe if the old World knewAs dear a friend as I find in you,That friend would tell it that all it needsIs the little old poem that nobody reads.

What if there had been social media during the Apollo 8 mission to the Moon in 1968? This account will put you believably back inside those six incredibly tense and dramatic days in 1968. It is the story of the first manned mission to the Moon told in the form of today's social media, allowing us to witness the unfolding drama of the mission as if we were following it in real time and as if the participants and observers were sharing their thoughts and actions with us directly. In December 1968, so much remained unknown. Would the first manned launch of the massive Saturn V rocket lift off and successfully deliver three astronauts into Earth orbit? Would humans be able to survive passing through the Van Allen belts of radiation between the Earth and the Moon? What would happen when the astronauts passed around the far side of the Moon out of contact with Earth? Would the single engine needed to boost the spacecraft out of lunar orbit and on a course back to Earth fire as hoped? Would the first nighttime recovery of a spacecraft from the Pacific Ocean be successful? If the Apollo 8 mission was to be successful, the astronauts on board would become the first humans to travel so incredibly far and so incredibly fast. They would be the first to leave the Earth's sphere of influence and the first to see the whole planet Earth from space. They would be the first to orbit the Moon, first to set eyes on the far side of the Moon and the first humans to witness the spectacular Earthrise over the lunar landscape. The narrative of this account is based on actual astronaut recollections, NASA transcripts of the fascinating continual communications with the astronauts, broadcasts of the main TV networks covering the mission and the thoughts of many laypeople and expert observers. There is an extensive list of major sources at the end of the book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Another Great Hashtag History! By frglee Once again, I greatly enjoyed this new 'Hashtag History' by Philip Gibson, set before his other excellent accounts in the same format of his 'HH' accounts of the more famous Apollo 11 and 13 space missions. For those not in the loop, these books imagine there was social messaging back in the day, and order and explain the short pithy (imaginary but based on fact) 'tweets' made by the people involved in the events, with some potted biographies, illustrations, photos and explanations. It makes for a surprisingly good read. Of course, there are plenty of weighty tomes about the amazing Apollo space programme, and sometimes we have to pinch ourselves and remember that these events are now nearly half a century in the past. Technologies are rather different now, yet, still the great adventure of sending men to the moon has not been duplicated since the 1970's.Hashtag Histories attempts to precis the information of these missions in a personal and concise way from the people involved . As such, they are a interesting and highly readable way of examining events, and very useful for students to appreciate the order of events and speculation about them as they were going on. We hear from the three Apollo 8 astronauts, Jim Lovell, Frank Borman and Bill Anders. There is extensive commentary from the 'most trusted man in America', the personable and highly professional tv newsman Walter Cronkite, along with other ongoing commentary by Mission Control Staff at Houston. We even have enthusiastic comment from Sir Bernard Lovell from the Jodrell Bank radio telescope facility in the UK, who had to anxiously deny ever having criticised the space programme! There are comments also from atheists complaining about the Xmas day recitation from the Bible by the astronauts orbiting the moon, yet which many thought was very moving. Some input also from two great adventurers, the American Charles Lindberg - the first solo flier across the Atlantic in 1927 and the British Sir Francis Chichester, who made the first single handed non-stop sailing trip round the world in 1966. Thus are previous generations and old technologies connected with the new, but the adventure continues. The Apollo 8 mission to the moon in December 1968 was the first time man had travelled to the moon. It was very much a test spaceflight, as would be the following two missions, to try out the new technology, to find problems and resolve them before the moon landing the following July. No lunar landing by Apollo 8 was planned; just getting to and from a moon orbit successfully was the main mission objective. Without much in the way of computer power, either. Astronauts were still using slide rules, the stars and hand held astrolabes to navigate with! Even paper and pens were used to make calculations and check data inside the space capsule! The trip was not without problems. The stomach illness of flight commander Frank Borman caused some concern. The fogged up windows for one thing; the lack of visibility from the space capsule windows caused by material expelled from the spacecraft. There were heating issues inside the capsule; problems with cameras; communications and telemetry links to Houston Mission Control HQ, mysterious noises and faults and so on.Back on the Earth, the news gathering services were having problems with new technology too, especially international link ups, though the new Intelsat III satellite tv links had just started. But the biggest issue would have been the lack of back-up plans and the impossibility of rescue if anything went wrong. The author notes that a third of all moonshots at this time had failed, either crashing into the moon or missing completely and sailing off into interplanetary space, unable to return. But this was the first such manned mission and NASA had to get it right first time. The moonflight went off pretty well, despite a few anxious moments, well shown here in the pithy narrative. The main thrill of this book comes from the astonishing events and the well described amazement of the astronauts witnessing the first ever trip to the moon.Orbiting the moon at an altitude of just 60 miles above the lunar surface, many beautiful pictures were taken of the desolate moonscapes; some of these would be invaluable for the landing of Apollo 11 in Jul 1969. And there were memorable first pictures of the Earth from the moon as well. But the astronauts were not short of observational skills and appreciation for what they were seeing, and managed some good workarounds for the issues of the film and stills cameras and fogged up viewports, even if some of the TV links were limited by the technology of the time. I'd have to say I found some events pretty gripping to read as well, such as the vital 'burns' to achieve a lunar orbit and to finally leave the moon and return to Earth. Then, the final section detailing the re-entry and splashdown in the Pacific is particularily well told and exciting. Not difficult to picture in your 'minds eye'.Around the world in 1968, people were greatly captivated by what they saw and heard from Apollo 8 and Philip Gibson documents this well also.Enjoyed greatly reading this. Oddly as it sounds from such a literary method, it is a curiously captivating and attention-grabbing way to read hard facts that does not require huge concentration. It can be picked up and put down easily. I found it very interesting, thought provoking and quite exciting. Some nice pictures as well. I particularily like the way I was not spoon fed a point of view, but just given the facts and left to use my own imagination to fill in the spaces. A good read, three hours well spent, I think! I bought this on the UK site, but wanted to share my review here as well.

The Apollo 8 Experience By Alastair Browne The author, Philip Gibson, contacted me to do a review of this book, and I obtain a free copy on my kindle. I agreed to write the review. This book is not a narrative, but a media script, with accounts of famous people who covered this flight, from newsman Walter Cronkite, NASA news director Jack King, President John Kennedy back in 1961 issuing the challenge of going to the Moon, and the astronauts themselves, Frank Borman, James Lovell, and Bill Anders. There are many other casts of characters (other astronauts, astronomers, scientists, politicians), along with a few surprises. All this was taken from transcripts from NASA, newsmen from various broadcasting systems, and interviews with many different astronauts, scientists, and engineers. It is thoroughly researched. The book starts from the beginning, with President Kennedy giving the challenge back in 1961 and then proceeds with a short narrative of project Apollo, up to Apollo 8. When a new participant is introduced, there is a short biography of him or her, enabling the reader to better understand the situation. There is much technical information, as how the rocket proceeds into Earth orbit, the escape from Earth’s gravity, and the journey towards the Moon, and what maneuvers are required to go into lunar orbit. The story continues with the astronauts orbiting the Moon and taking pictures of the lunar surface for later data analysis, and coming up with new theories on how the Earth and Moon was form, along with selecting landing sites for future Moon missions. The astronauts personal recollections are also covered, as to Borman’s problem with diarrhea at the beginning of the mission to what the astronauts had for Christmas dinner. It was a pleasant surprise. There are cliff hangers here, so in a way, you can read it like an adventure. There are scenes where Apollo had to fire the rockets at the right time for an engine burn to escape lunar orbit. If it failed, they would be in lunar orbit forever, with no chance or rescue. When they reached Earth, they have to fire a Trans-Earth Injection Maneuver at the right angle. If entry is too shallow, they bounce off the atmosphere and get thrown in space forever. If it’s too steep, they burn up in the atmosphere. We all know how the story ends. The book reads like a script and can transform the reader to the event itself, as if he or she was actually there. There are tidbits of little known facts, and the reader can develop an understanding of the strategic implications of a journey like this.It is both educational and enjoyable, and is recommended for any space advocate on what was experienced during these first manned lunar missions.

Ray I’ve been a fan of Philip Gibson’s Hashtag History series since reading the first. He’s hit another homerun, in my view, with #Houston68 – Apollo 8: The Longest Journey. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my review. In #Houston68 Gibson takes us inside the Apollo 8 mission during those six tense days in December 1968 when NASA conducted the first manned Lunar mission through the medium of social media, to wit, Twitter. Through a series of ‘live’ tweets, beginning on May 25, 1961 when John F. Kennedy said, “We undertake these endeavors, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”All of those involved in the program, from astronauts to flight engineers and mission control on the inside, to Walter Cronkite and other notables on the outside, are shown through actual historical quotes, only as if they were reacting in real time to events. In addition, Gibson puts this mission into the historical perspective of the Cold War by weaving in the Pueblo Incident—the case of the U.S. spy ship crew taken captive by the North Koreans and held for an extended period, who were finally released during this period. If, like many students, you were bored during high school history classes—and, trust me, you didn’t miss much—you can make up what you missed during those class time naps by reading the Hashtag History series.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth Reading By A. Minton Hard for me to review this book because I bought it for research. However, I quickly realized that it is a fictionalized version of Poe's life written (I believe) by one of his contemporaries, a woman named Mary Stanard. Not helpful to me as factual research, but the book does give the reader a taste of the romanticism that has encircled Poe since his untimely death and continues to this day. I don't know that I would label Poe "a dreamer," although he certainly appeared that way to many people, most especially women. I'm not sure the "true" Poe has yet been discovered, but I suspect he, in life, was nothing like the man he has morphed into since his mysterious death. However, any book that can take a reader even a tiny step closer to the mystery that was Poe, is worth reading.

I became hooked and obsessed B>) I wanted to read the book and research the author. Neadless to say, I wasn't disappointed. Elizabeth Gaskell, during the Victorian era, use the power of the pen to address the social and politcial injustices centered around the Industrial Revolution as a back drop to a great love story. I believe, because she was a woman, her work didn't receive the recognition it should have. The movie adaptation of her book into a movie series has brought renewed interest in her work.

Great read for the period piece lover By susana guerrero I read it after rewatching the miniseries on Netflix which has become one of my favorites. It's a bit like pride and prejudice in that the two main characters start off disliking each other. I recommend reading it and getting this version which includes all the volumes.

Richard Cross vividly remembers the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963. As a Security Officer for the CIA, it had been his assignment two years previously to protect his President, and he clearly understood with his head as well as his heart what a world-shaking event this would turn out to be. Always curious about the many conspiracy theories that began swirling around almost immediately, Cross used the springboard of the Warren Commission's release in 2013 of papers that had been sealed for 50 years to focus his investigative skills on finding the real reason Lee Harvey Oswald killed John F. Kennedy. Was he a KGB agent? Mostly likely. Was he following orders from the KGB? Less likely; in fact, Cross surmises, Oswald was a rogue agent, following his own inner impulses, against the wishes of the Soviets. Cross puts heart as well as his head into this fascinating, thorough treatise.

Review of Lee Harvey Oswald: A Rogue KGB Agent By Amazon Customer As was the case with his first book on this subject, The Overlooked Letters, I enjoyed Richard Cross' methodical approach to reviewing the evidence in support of his theories about Lee Harvey Oswald and the Kennedy Assassination. Lee Harvey Oswald: A Rogue KGB Agent goes into deeper detail about Oswald himself, his family life, his time in the Soviet Union and his association with other known communists in addition to providing insights into key Warren Commission source documents and declassified CIA reports in support of his conclusions that Lee Harvey Oswald was a rogue KGB agent. The review of all the JFK Conspiracy theories, in one of the later chapters of the book, was also very interesting and insightful as were some of the insights he shared from his visit to Russia for the Bank Security workshop. I'm already looking forward to his potential 3rd book following the 2017 National Archive release of the remaining Warren Commission documents.

The "Inside Man" Follows the Evidence By Millwee Richard Cross presents a compelling investigative analysis that connects the dots that shows Oswald was a KGB agent. Cross, a former CIA employee during the period of the JFK assassination, writes as if preparing a case for prosecution. Using primary and secondary source references, methodical research, and his knowledge of the Agency, you will find yourself propelled into the cloak and dagger world of the KGB. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put the book down. He cites the evidence and explores why other conspiracy theories have no credibility, leaving you convinced that Oswald was a rogue KBG operative. With over 44 years experience with the FBI, homicide detective, and security expert, this is a must read book!

The Boy Slaves, by Mayne Reid

About the Author Mayne Reid, a pre-eminent and popular writer, was primarily a novelist (1818-1883) who wrote adventure stories from just before the Civil War until his death in 1883. Reid's career included two periods in the U. S: 1840-49 and 1867-70. He had emigrated to the United States in his early twenties, reaching New Orleans in January, 1840, where he pursued a varied career as a shopkeeper, overseer of slaves, schoolmaster, and actor, with occasional forays into hunting and Indian warfare. Reid returned to England in 1849, and embarked upon a successful career as a writer of adventure novels and books for boys He was a close friend of Poe (though their writings were miles apart), played a gallant role in the Mexican War, worked as a journalist and wrote most of his first novel while in the United States.

He was an influence on the young mind of Teddy Roosevelt, as Roosevelt reveals in his Autobiography; while Arthur Conan Doyle wrote in his 1890s essay "Juvenilia" that when young he always kept "Mr. Ballantyne or Captain Mayne Reid at my elbow"; Robert Louis Stevenson praised Reid in the Vailima Letters, and J. Frank Dobie has said he, "dared convey real information in his romances."

Focusing on colonial Kenya, this book shows how conflicts between state authorities and Africans over witchcraft-related crimes provided an important space in which the meanings of justice, law, and order in the empire were debated. Katherine Luongo discusses the emergence of imperial networks of knowledge about witchcraft. She then demonstrates how colonial concerns about witchcraft produced an elaborate body of jurisprudence about capital crimes. The book analyzes the legal wrangling that produced the Witchcraft Ordinances in the 1910s, the birth of an anthro-administrative complex surrounding witchcraft in the 1920s, the hotly contested Wakamba Witch Trials of the 1930s, the explosive growth of legal opinion on witch-murder in the 1940s, and the unprecedented state-sponsored cleansings of witches and Mau Mau adherents during the 1950s. A work of anthropological history, this book develops an ethnography of Kamba witchcraft or uoi.

Witchcraft and Colonial Rule in Kenya, 1900-1955 (African Studies), by Professor Katherine Luongo

Review "This is one of the finest historical ethnographies of witchcraft and statecraft that I have read. Luongo simultaneously gives account of Kamba witchcraft and of the British colonial juridical system through which it was policed - two cosmologies that not only came into conflict but that also profoundly shaped one another over time. The rich detail of the work - a reading of the archives at once anthropological and historical - makes for captivating reading and, in light of the continuing, sometimes explosive, juxtaposition of witchcraft and formal legal systems in post-colonial East Africa and beyond, a work of significant contemporary relevance." - Harry G. West, SOAS, University of London"Where witchcraft is very often taken to be a peculiar aspect of Africans' mentality, Luongo's fine book shows how the occult was translated, disciplined, and organized by British and Kenyan brokers. The regulation of witchcraft was one of the tensions of empire, an occupation in which Kenyan practitioners played a role alongside British authorities. Luongo's book allows us to see how witches haunted colonial power, giving us new insights into the uncertainties of governance." - Derek Peterson, University of Michigan, author of Creative Writing: Translation, Bookkeeping, and the Work of Imagination in Kenya"Luongo's vivid style of anthropological history brings out the full complexity of colonial officials' positioning toward the witchcraft conundrum. But the interest of this groundbreaking study is much broader. Luongo's imaginative analysis of rich legal data and people's memories shows witchcraft to be an ongoing, basic challenge to state formation as such, up to the present day." - Peter Geschiere, University of Amsterdam, author of The Modernity of Witchcraft: Politics of the Occult in Postcolonial Africa"Through its analysis of judicial matters concerning witchcraft, this book makes an important contribution to understandings of the construction of both the colonial and postcolonial state. It illustrates the reliance of an anthropological history on legal research." - Hervé Maupeu, Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour

About the Author Katherine Luongo received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In 2003-4, she held a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship to conduct archival and ethnographic research in Kenya and was a research associate at the Institut Français de Recherche en Afrique in Nairobi. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of History at Northeastern University in Boston. Luongo's articles have appeared in History in Africa, African Affairs, The Journal of Eastern African Studies and the Cahiers d'Études africaines. Her research and teaching interests include the occult, legal systems and anthropological history.

By frankie t Really..this is a free book and it contains poems by Edgar Lee Masters, the author of the most successful book of poems ever, "Spoon River Anthology"...given that the Spoon River Book was a once in a lifetime hit, his other books of poems are also interesting if not as popular. Just a few short years ago I had to jump through hoops to get a look at these poems and now they are free for reading on my Kindle. The golden age of reading is about to start for me. I wish I was 28 again. This is the stuff I yearned for back then.

Oroonoko, or, the Royal Slave, by Aphra Behn

About the Author Born in the first few decades of the seventeenth century, Aphra Behn is one of early literature s best-known female writers. Behn had the lucky distinction of being able to support herself strictly by her pen, something unheard of for women of her time. Throughout her long career, she wrote in various formspoetry, plays, proseand is known as a member of the fair triumvirate of wit alongside fellow scribes Eliza Haywood and Delarivier Manley. Although little is known about her early life, Behn s father held a post as lieutenant governor of Surinam, and Behn s experiences during her stay most likely formed the basis for her most famous work, Oroonoko. Behn was also a popular dramatist in her time, penning critical successes like The Rover and The Feigned Courtesans. What a surprise to find such a fast moving and heart-warming story!!As there is no synopsis on amazon for this book I will give you a general overview.... the story is narrated by a young girl. She and her brother and sister are orphans and live with their grandfather in England. She believes there are secrets that he possesses and this is her story to tell us how she came to discover them. The story moves along quite quickly and captures the world through a young person's eye. The characters are wonderful and the book kept a nice pace. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys uplifting stories set in England. Enjoy it, I did!!

Charming, warmhearted escape By Carolyn Blaxton A few days ago I was just in the mood to curl up with something uplifting and decided to try this delightful return to the best parts of childhood. It had all the necessary pieces-siblings that liked and depended on each other, family members with mysteries to unravel, a wild and extensive garden to explore and the complex world of adults to fathom. Just what I wanted and I thoroughly enjoyed.

Glade "Create Your Escape: A Practical Guide for Planning Long Term Travel" is truly a practical guide for an undertaking that some would describe as inherently impractical. The authors were not some naive couple who just up and left without a plan. In fact, they planned everything. Even if the reader never chooses to drop everything and go travel the world, there is plenty of wise advice in this book for everyday living. The tips on the fun of frugality are excellent. And the concept that we have more choices than we may believe is extremely empowering. The process of shedding yourself of the burden of owning a car was intricately laid out for the reader; very methodical and logical. The content about packing, banking, cooking, and ultimately traveling was all very straightforward and useful information. Whether a reader chooses to simply live vicariously through the authors' exploits, or actually plan their own escape, this book will help you rethink a lot of what you do every day...the choices you make, the power that you have to make new choices. You will enjoy reading about what it takes to be responsibly irresponsible and follow your dreams wherever they may lead.

Brownson This timing for the release of this book couldn't have been better, as it came out the day before I had a couple of long flights scheduled. What better topic to read about on a plane than travel? Having been involved in the travel space for several years and knowing many people who have taken long term trips, I was quite excited to read this book and see how well it summarized what is necessary to make an extended trip happen. When I started reading, I quickly realized that the authors would not disappoint. They are clearly well versed in the topic and they do an excellent job of explaining in detail what needs to happen when preparing for this type of adventure. The conversational tone and personal asides made this book quite easy to read and each chapter provides a wealth of information on a variety of topics. Although I was reading the book mostly out of personal interest and to see if I should recommend it to friends, by the end I found myself wishing that I was planning a round the world trip so that I could use all of this great information. In fact, this book has stirred up some conversations within our family and we are now seriously looking at the logistics of living abroad for a year. If you are planning your own round the world adventure, or any type of long term international travel, I would seriously recommend reading this book as you begin to plan your trip. It will make your planning life so much easier and will let you focus more on the fun of actually traveling the world.

Even if you are traveling alone, these tips and tricks are amazing advice for the road ahead. Tara and Mike thought of everything needed to plan a trip like theirs, including tips of how to save/make money while planning the trip, something many people look past with the excitement of the trip itself. One of the most difficult things for many people to do is budget and plan out how you are going to pay for everything in a realistic way. Little tips such as what you can do in exchange for free room and board are important things that can save a lot of money along the way. They really thought out every part of trip planning while keeping the process fun. The detail and passion put into this book are contagious and would motivate anyone to get out in the world and see what it has to offer! I highly recommend this book to anyone with the tiniest bit of adventurous spirit in them. Their website is also incredibly well done and will make you even more thrilled about the adventures that lie ahead!

Märchen-Almanach auf das Jahr 1828 (German Edition), by Wilhelm Hauff

About the Author Der vielseitige Erzähler Wilhelm Hauff wurde am 29. November 1802 in Stuttgart geboren. November 1827 in seiner Heimatstadt.
