Märchen-Almanach auf das Jahr 1827 (German Edition), by Wilhelm Hauff

About the Author Der vielseitige Erzähler Wilhelm Hauff wurde am 29. November 1802 in Stuttgart geboren. November 1827 in seiner Heimatstadt.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A Seminal Who Dunnit By Fantasyman I rate this novel 5 stars. I rate it primarily on originality, plot and pacing, and the ability to mask the identity of the culprit to the very end. This may be one of the most original crime novels ever written. I'm of the opinion that this may be the first ever "Procedural" type of crime story. Where the story is revealed bit by bit as the facts become available, and in a logical sequence that doesn't stretch the reader's credulity, while at the same time taking numerous twists and turns along the way. Anyone familiar with the style of CSI or Law and Order would easily recognize the way the story is built up. And the surprise ending? A surprise! What else could it be. You won't be able to figure out who the murderer is until the very end.Though written in the third person, there is no omniscience at work in this story, all of the action is seen through the eyes of the main character, or, through what other characters say in his presence. We follow the main character through the story as he discovers the facts of the case, right up to the very end. This allows the reader to stay abreast of the story, with no marvelous intuition guiding the story to conclusion. This isn't Sherlock Holmes, or Hercule Poirot, summing it all up as simply a logical deduction to anyone with the ability to reason it out, no, this is a step-by-step resolution of the crime using clues to the story gathered along the way. This is the best work by this author that I have read.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Very enjoyable romp By William Whyte An immensely enjoyable detective romp, first published in 1919. The writing is sometimes a bit stiff and pompous, but the plot is satisfyingly dense, the mystery is intriguing, and the atmosphere and characterization (which are the point of the whole thing) are top-notch. My favourite was the old stamp dealer who exclaims, "You think and argue on modern lines -- which are, of course, highly superior."

This map covers a large enough area that you can plan travel in this wonderful region without haning to use multiple maps, yet it is in a scale that is easy to read. Also, it is printed on more durable paper that is weather resistant and withstands rough usage.

Review "Every once in a while as we turn the pages of [this] impressive book, there is the temptation to sigh and shout an enthusiastic 'Amen!'." -- Oakland Press, June 16, 1999

About the Author Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) was a leading light of the women's rights movement in the late nineteenth century. Besides The Woman's Bible she also helped to compile the History of Woman Suffrage. With Lucretia Mott she organized the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, NY, and with Susan B. Anthony founded the National Woman Suffrage Movement.

A CLASSIC OF EARLY 19TH CENTURY FEMINISM By Steven H Propp Famous suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) undertook to compile this work after the 1870 revision of the King James Bible was made by an all-male committee. She recruited commentators and essayists (identified by their initials at the end of the article) such as Matilda Joslyn Gage (author of Woman, Church and State), Ursula Gestefeld, Olympia Brown, Mrs. Robert Ingersoll, etc.The book is divided into two sections: 'the Pentateuch,' and 'Judges, Kings, Prophets, and Apostles.' Stanton herself writes the Introduction to each section. She states in her Preface to the second section, "'The Woman's Bible' is intended for readers who do not care for, and would not be convinced by, a learned, technical work of so-called 'higher criticism.'"Here are some representative quotations from the book:"I do not believe that any man ever saw or talked with God, I do not believe that God inspired the Mosaic code, or told the historians what they say he did about woman, for all the religions on the face of the earth degrade her, and so long as woman accepts the position that they assign her, her emancipation is impossible." (V1, pg. 12)"Accepting the view that man was prior in the creation, some Scriptural writers say that as the woman was of the man, therefore, her position shold be one of subjection. Grant it, then as the historical fact is reversed in our day, and the man is now of the woman, shall his place be one of subjection?" (V1, pg. 20)"Indeed the Pentateuch is a long painful record of war, corruption, rapine, and lust. Why Christians who wished to convert the heathen to our religion should send them these books, passes all understanding." (V1, pg. 66)"The fifth commandment will take the reader by surprise. It is rather remarkable that the young Hebrews should have been told to honor their mothers, when the whole drift of the teaching thus far has been to throw contempt on the whole sex." (V1, pg. 83)"It is truly pitiful to see the deceptions that have been played upon the people in all ages and countries by the priests in the name of religion... No other class of teachers have such prestige and power, especially over woman." (V1, pg. 133)"Is it not astonishing that so little is in the New Testament concerning the mother of Christ?" (V2, pg. 143)"The best thing about the Catholic Church is the deification of Mary... The cruelty of Jehovah is softened by the mercy of Mary." (V2, pg. 144)"Until the feminine is recognized in the Divine Being, and justice is established in the Church by the complete equality of woman with man, the Church cannot be thoroughly Christian." (V2, Pg. 173)

A great Biblical commentary that has stood the test of time By A Customer Stanton and her cohorts wrote The Women's Bible over 100 years ago and yet these commentaries are still as pertinent and valuable today as they were at the time they were written. She and others run rings around many of the tenets of organized religion, often disproving them with the very Scriptures on which they are founded! A great read for anyone who seeks equality for women in organized religion as well as those who wish to see a radical visionary (even by today's standards) at work in the 19th century!

89 of 97 people found the following review helpful. The Feminist Meets the Patriarch By moo dog Despite my flippant title for this review, I have a great deal of respect for this book. It is not a devotional, nor a Bible, but rather more of an expose of how traditional patriarchal Christianity and Judaism used Scripture to oppress women (and other minorities), by deliberate mistranslations, omissions, and spinning the truth for their own gains.Having been raised and educated in a ruthlessly patriarchal Christian denomination, learning as an adult that the Bible actually supports and venerates women almost brought me to tears. It was learning that I was Loved, not hated, by God. Only then could I learn the true meaning of "Love your neighbor as yourself." Up till then, my question about that passage was "but what if you hate yourself?" Everything I had learned about myself up to that point was that I was worthless, a sinner made all the more contemptible for having the X chromosome, rather than the Y.Elizabeth Cady Stanton was angry, make no mistake, and with good reason. Living a century before I had my epiphany, her life was even more proscibed than mine. She lived at a time when women lost both their first names and last names the day they were married, when a woman could not own property in her own name, when everything she posessed was at the whim of her husband, or nearest male relative. A friend once showed me a will written by his great grandfather, dated at the time of Stanton's life, and in it, he willed "To my wife, I leave her spinning wheel", thus assuring his wife she could continue to spin; had he not done that, her spinning wheel could have been seized or sold by the nearest male relative. It is hard to imagine a life where education for women was not considered necessary, and women were by no means given equal education to men, where women were at the mercy of husbands, fathers, brothers, nephews, sons (Mary Todd Lincoln's son had her committed to a mental instution with spurious evidence of her "insanity", probably to gain control of her money). All these attrocities, all the oppression was not only sanctioned but encouraged by the Church. It is easy to understand why Stanton and other women were ready to go to war against the Church. Imagine learning that everything you had been taught was a hoax, a lie, perpetrated to keep you powerless and helpless and "in your place". These women who wrote "The Women's Bible" were well-educated, intelligent, determined, and very, very angry.I believe "The Women's Bible" is best read as a historical document, as over time, many of the complaints Stanton and other women had have been changed (a woman can now own property in her name, careers that were once closed to women are now open, and many denominations now ordain women....though that still doesn't mean women now have equal status in the church). However, the deliberate mistranslations, omissions, and additions to the Bible that they uncovered and the attitudes those lies foster among current patriarchs of the church still exist in contemporary Bibles. Women still would do well to be wary of traditional churches, and to question what they hear.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Strong on emotions, weak on presentation By David T. This short work from the 19th century agnostic Ingersoll was a little disappointing. Right away he starts talking about Moses making up a religion to control his followers, regardless of what someone's opinion of this is, there's no way to know of this is true, if you accept the bible then Moses was telling the truth, if you don't then Moses could have been mistaken or delusional but that's no indication he made up a religion. Most of the rest of the book continues in like manner, he spends a significant portion attacking some of the things Jehovah commanded the Israelites to do in the old testament. He expects the people of ancient Israel to have the same mindset as his and since they didn't they are a barbarous people (for example he goes on about Jehovah gave the Israelites no schools, no sciences, no arts, no commerce). Overall this polemic attacks the bible but doesn't do a great job of getting its point across, its much more of a book written for the atheist not as much to convince a believer of his errors (and there are far better books at accomplishing this). I hope his book on the mistakes of moses has a little more substance. He did make a decent point about if Jesus was god incarnate he would know the future and if so why didn't he take more care to explain his words and help prevent all of the battles we've had over doctrine (such as actually explaining the trinity himself or clarifying his position on earth).

If only Paine and Ingersoll were required reading By wide eyed child Perhaps our nation would not have elected (or at least been fooled into believing we had) the likes of such as G. W. Bush and Antonio Scalia. We would still be a leader in scientific exploration and invention, rather than the fading empire shackled with superstitions and ignorance.

While English is my native language (and only language), It has always been something of a problem for me when reading something from earlier periods. The Declaration of Independence is not all that difficult for me to understand, but reading the Federalist Papers and other documents of our early nation is not always easy to understand. Given that I may have problems with documents from our revolutionary times, you can be certain that reading Shakespeare is truly punishment for me.Ingersoll's words are over a century old, and his syntax is certainly a bit different than that I have learned over my lifetime, but I can pretty easily understand his words and thoughts as long as I read a little bit more slowly. My taking a little more time to read and understand his words is certainly worth the effort for me. In this lecture Ingersoll goes through the books of the Bible noting various things that are reported in the books and asks the reader if the things he notes are worthy of religious worship. As he notes a particular topic, it makes one open his Bible to read the particular passage to see if his point is well taken or not. Most of the time, Ingersoll's points are well taken. I can understand why this man was considered a scourge by many religious folks.Ingersoll's writings are not faith based. He is quite clear when he repeatedly points out his words are thought based instead.Best wishes,Dave Wile

So much has been said about Marikana since the tragedy of 16 August 2012 where 34 miners were shot dead by police. South Africans are divided, with many supporting the miners and others supporting the police. The news and the images of the massacre made headlines around the globe for weeks. What the world didn’t take into account was who and what it took to bring that news from the small town of Rustenburg to the world. Reporting from the Frontline is about personal experiences describing incidents behind the scenes from the main action. While most journalists spent weeks covering the unfolding events at Marikana, many didn’t have the opportunity to tell their own stories. A large group of journalists, producers, and television presenters gathered at the North West Platinum Mine when several deaths were reported and the violence broke out. While the nation and the world focused on what was happening on the ground, no one asked how the media dealt with this tragedy. As with any good movie, critics want to know what it took to create it. These stories will take you to the production center of Marikana where the journalists watched, listened, and interviewed in order to weave the stories together. The way Marikana was told to the world is quite different to what happened to the journalists who covered it. Their stories show a completely different perspective.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the fighting by soldiers and generals *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “’Pickett's charge at Gettysburg’ has come to be a synonym for unflinching courage in the raw. The slaughter-pen at Franklin even more deserves the gory honor.” - Stanley F. Horn, The Army of Tennessee As Sherman began his infamous march to the sea, Lincoln instructed Grant to redirect General George H. Thomas’ efforts back to Tennessee to protect Union supply lines and stop the offensive mounted by Confederate general John Bell Hood. Hood had broken away from Atlanta and was trying to compel Sherman to follow him, thus diverting him from his intended path of destruction. With Sherman marching east toward the sea, he directed Thomas to try to block Hood around Nashville. In late November, the Army of the Ohio, being led by Thomas’ principal subordinate John Schofield, all but blindly stumbled into Hood’s forces, and it was only through luck that some of them had not been bottled up before they could regroup together. Receiving word of Union troop movement in the Nashville area, General Hood sent for his generals while attempting to hold off Schofield’s advance. Hood knew that if Schofield reached Thomas’ position, their combined armies would number more than twice his. Though the Confederates successfully blocked Schofield’s route to Nashville, the Union general managed to execute an all-night maneuver that brought him to Franklin, about 18 miles south of Nashville. On November 30, the Union army began digging in around Franklin, and that afternoon Hood ordered a frontal assault on the dug in Union army which deeply upset his own officers. Hood stressed the necessity of defeating Schofield’s forces before Thomas could arrive, though some historians believe his decision to mount a frontal attack was a rash decision made out of fury at the fact Schofield had escaped his grasp. Patrick Cleburne, known as the “Stonewall of the West,” was perhaps the most vocally outspoken opponent of the plan, and he suggested a plan to flank the Union position. Hood refused to consider it, and as Cleburne mounted his horse and acknowledged his duty, Cleburne rallied his men and promised Hood, “We will take the works or fall in the attempt!” In a more private remark to one of his brigadier generals, Daniel Govan, Cleburne said, "Well, Govan, if we are to die, let us die like men." After repeated frontal assaults failed to create a gap in the Union lines, Schofield withdrew his men across the river on the night of November 30, successfully escaping Hood’s army. Meanwhile, Hood had inflicted nearly 8,000 casualties upon his army (men the Confederacy could scarcely afford to lose), while the Union lost about a quarter of that. Despite practically wrecking his army, which was now only about 25,000 strong, Hood marched his battered army to a position outside Nashville, Tennessee, where he took up defensive positions while awaiting reinforcements from Texas. About two weeks later, at the Battle of Nashville, Thomas effectively destroyed Hood’s command, inflicting over 6,000 more Confederate casualties while losing less than half that. Civil War historian Wiley Ford noted of the campaign, “Never had there been such an overwhelming victory during the Civil War - indeed, never in American military history.” Upon reaching his headquarters at Tupelo, Mississippi, General Hood requested to be relieved of command rather than be removed in disgrace. The Greatest Civil War Battles: The Battle of Franklin analyzes the events leading up to the important Union victory and the climactic fighting itself. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Battle of Franklin like never before.

For those that already know Boston or have a larger guide waiting back in their hotel room this would be good as a reminder, but as for a guide to Boston there are some shortcomings. For example, my grandson wanted to look up Old Ironsides, he finally had to page around until he found USS Constitution. That is okay, but this is an example of where this book gives little help and advice other than listings. There is no information for handicap access or even in the whole book for anyone driving a car - which granted is a challenge in this city - but there is no help at all for that. It includes the USS Constitution on a walking tour but has it in the afternoon. Anyone who has tried to see this popular site on a summer afternoon will tell you- you wind up standing in a line down the block and waiting for even hours. There is nothing in here to warn you of that. There is a nice pull out map, with transit information and top sights, but the maps on the pages are vague and you will need more detailed maps for even walking. There are good colour photos of some the sights with the exception of an unexplained one of someone walking across the Old Northern Avenue Bridge, back to the camera with their blond hair flying filling up the photo. There almost seems to be as much information about eating places as there are places to see. Coloured symbols give you some help and guidance in the listings. Missing is any information on trolley and water tours, which there again are very popular and give visitors a nice perspective of the city. There are listings for things such as best walks, eating, drinking, entertainment shopping, for kids, museums, spectator sports, for free, history and tours.I really usually appreciate the help Lonely Planet tour guides have, but this is sadly lacking in the help. For listings it is fine with a few exceptions noted already.

Compact; good as a basic guide and you can supplement with internet By booksandbliss I got this book as it has been many years since I've lived in Boston, and we are thinking about taking a family trip there later this spring. So given that I once knew Boston very well, this compact book was a good refresher and I can attest to the pointers it gives. The book is much smaller than I expected (I guess I hadn't noticed the word "pocket" in the description) - you can hold it in one hand and it will fit comfortably in any size bag or purse - but it is not insubstantial. It's pretty much a summarized version of a full size travel guide, with suggested itineraries, maps, and an overview of basic information like public transportation, average temperatures throughout the year, etc. It hits on the key parts of the Boston area and vicinity and I would say that you can't go wrong with the sites and itineraries they suggest. I did find the restaurant listings very limited, however, and I would simply go on the internet for suggestions on places to eat. The information is not in depth (for example, it talks very briefly about public transportation access for the disabled, and then points you to the MBTA (public transit) website. There is, in fact, a door-to-door service for disabled commuters, including visitors. So this type of information is not included and you may need to supplement the info in this book with further research. This is a good guide for those who may already be familiar with Boston and want a refresher, or for those who don't want to spend time plodding through lengthy guidebooks. The book is light and easy to carry with you. I think it's a good basic guide and you can always follow up on the internet to research places and activities that you want more information on.

I enjoyed that for such a small book, there were tons of great pictures. I really felt it brought forth the spirit of my town, and covered the things that define us, like the Red Sox, the Marathon, our revolutionary history, the importance of the waterfront, Cambridge's universities, and our world-class museums. So I live in Boston, and this book gets it mostly right. It's just a pocket guide, but it's really everything I would share with a visitor. Of course, there is an emphasis on some of the things us locals never do (Freedom Trail? Bunker Hill Monument? I know they exist but I wouldn't go there). But it also covers the great places we do go - the museums, the neighborhoods, restaurants and cafes. It has a handy map and even talks about how to ride the T (very important) and why you shouldn't try to park in Harvard Yard (despite the popular Boston accent joke, there is no parking in Harvard and you should save yourself the headache). There was only one sentence I took issue with, that the Theater District is the only club scene in town, when dance clubs are commonly found down near Fenway, and Central Square Cambridge has its own hopping nightlife. Otherwise I was impressed with their recommendations, covering some of my favorite restaurants and hangouts. I'm familiar with most of the neighborhoods covered in this book, from Cambridge's Harvard Square to Chinatown and the South End. I can personally assure you that the recommendations given here are also local favorites.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love the Chase By Nojoqui Adventure, romance, and fear. All rolled up into this neat little book by William Le Queux. One of my favorite parts was the exciting car chase that took place between Studland, Dorset across southern England, and into Cornwall. It give some idea of what car travel was like back in the "old days". Such a chase could have taken place anywhere. Le Queux's choice of this location gives one pause to look the area up on Google Earth or Bing Maps to follow the route. The protagonist can't believe that his long last love showed up only to be snatched away by a suspected criminal. Our hero finds himself not only chasing across southern England, but also through France and Italy. He discovers secrets concerning his lost sweetheart that nearly drive him mad. As daring as he is, he finds himself in predicaments that he questions his dauntlessness. As does the reader. But, both hero and reader hold on as the story progresses. The author wrote certain passages that make it easy to feel you are right there in stealth with our courageous lead character. If there's any fault to be found with the book, it's not the book itself. That is, it's easy to think that the romantic agony expressed by the hero is just a little too much "romantic". Modern depictions of "romance" just aren't as dramatic as they were when this book was written (1906). But, that's easy to get over. I really enjoyed the depictions of Italian culture and the transplanted English community. An enjoyable book.
