Dowling The first part of this book consists of poems interspersed with short biographical information regarding the early romantic lives of famous men: George Washington, Aaron Burr, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, etc. Then the writer includes chapters on the ideal husband, the ideal wife, and the art of writing. It's interesting but light reading.

Just an FYI that it is very bare bones- 40 pgs and basically just a black & white list of good food establishments. It basically just looks like a database list. No photos, etc- just name, price range, cuisine type, and contact info. There is some repetition since it lists multiple locations of local chains as separate entities on the list.

It gives very basic information in a very easy to read book. It describes best times to plan a trip based on weather and busiest times of the year. It also goes over information about each attraction in the park. Having said that, I'm not giving 5 stars because if you have been there before this book will not give you anything more than the basic feel of Hong Kong Disneyland. Also, it could have used another spelling and grammar edit has several mistakes were found. Still, if you want basic information this is not a bad choice.

It is 1940. The Nazis have taken the Channel Islands, fifteen miles from the coast of France. The locals are provincial island folk, living at peace until evil forces land. No one is coming to save them. They are on their own. Geoffrey Norman, who was born and raised in Jersey and went on to become a Hollywood screenwriter, actor and author, relates his story, not written for TV, but actually experienced during his extraordinary childhood. Remembrance unfolds like a classic feature film through five years of Nazi Occupation. Family, friends, schoolteachers, Nazi guards, slave workers and local farmhands speaking in their native Norman-French feature in young Geoffrey’s world as he bounces from the antics of his boyhood adventures to the realities of enemy occupation. This tale of childhood innocence and adult endurance will appeal to all readers interested in human survival under difficult circumstances; it is a story that will broaden understanding of the home front during the Second World War. In the author’s words, ‘Provincialism is one of the best weapons with which to fight totalitarianism.’

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. REMEMBRANCE reads like Stephen King's novel By Francesca Steele REMEMBRANCE reads like Stephen King's novel, "Stand by Me" meets the Steven Spielberg film, "The Goonies." Although, the subject matter, the Nazi Occupation of Jersey, a small British Island off the coast of France, is serious and for some, fatal, it is written in a way that is acceptable to middle grade and high school students, as well as adults interested in the true history and personal experiences of that time. The author, J.G. Messervy-Norman, writes with a professional flair, due to his skill as a screenwriter in Hollywood, that moves the story along as the reader waits to find out what more trouble little Geoffrey can get into and how does he manage as a small boy to interact with German soldiers, his parents, school friends and teachers. We find out throughout, that, like most little boys, everywhere, of all ages, he seeks with a passion, opportunities to acquire, trade, and hide various military souvenirs. The stories, presented through the eyes of little Geoffrey, illustrate the awkward balance all the islanders must confront between cooperation and collaboration. The author writes with a kind of counter-balance within his experiences and the experiences of the adults he is also interacting with. For example, why is it that he is caned for taking a gift of bread from a German cook, yet a local government official is allowed to share "good British whisky" with the German command?Unlike most novels with a child protagonist, REMEMBRANCE informs the reader of the political and military situations that form the background of his childhood throughout this selected timeline. We read about Churchill's reaction to the taking of this British territory as well as the intricate German High Command structure on the island. He also includes family as well as portraits photographs of the key German and local government figures in this real-life drama. The author has even provided very professionally arranged collages and montages of bunkers and extant anti-aircraft guns still 'in situ' on the island. As an American home-school mom and Boy Scout counsellor, I've read a number of other child-centered novels about WWII to recommend to my 12 year-old son and his scout friends. In my experience, I have found that very little reading material is encouraged to our school boys these days on the history of WWII. Instead, by the time they are onto this subject, 8th grade, then again in 12th grade, they are sent to view films and movies to fill in any of the gaps missing from the school curriculum. And more notably, on the West Coast, where I live, there is more emphasis on the Pacific Theatre and much is lost regarding Europe, although both are so important.I highly recommend this book for your middle grade and high school children. And I would encourage a discussion with them regarding the challenges that people face during political and war-time hardships weather they are adults or children of any nation.I would also recommend this memoir to anyone interested in the more personal interactions of how the Nazi Occupation forces dealt with the local populations. There-in has some unique insight.

This little volume might be called ‘Echoes from the land of youthful imaginings’; or ‘Ghosts of old dreams.’ It has been compiled at the request of Messrs. Gay and Hancock (my only authorised publishers in Great Britain), and contains verses written in my early youth, and which never before (with the exception, perhaps, of three or four) have been placed in book form.

Born into a comfortable and affluent New England family, Richard Henry Dana (who once studied under the great Ralph Waldo Emerson) disconcertingly took to the high seas in 1834 as a common sailor, an experience that would color his classic memoir Two Years Before the Mast. Despite his failing vision thanks to a childhood illness, Dana served onboard a merchant vessel, traveling from Massachusetts southward, with stops along South America and in California. A fascinating read for maritime enthusiasts or lovers of history, Dana’s Before the Mast is a vigorous account of a life at sea in the 19th century.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The best sea story ever! By Terri For anyone who ever served on a ship as a sailor this is like returning home. Dana tells a story of long work hours, little sleep, and less than good food. I read this book 50 years ago when I was an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy the details are just as real now as they were then. Dana is so rich in his description of shipboard life that you don't just read about life at sea, you experience it.Lou Smith

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Tiresome and redundant By Rogerfromrhodesia Sitting and reading about the exhausting, active but repetitive life of a sailor is quite boring; unlike that of a sailor himself. However there are some insightful passages that do shed light; like looking in through a window of time into America's past.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A well-written portrait of a sailor's life By W H Thomas Richard Dana's descriptions and opinions of life aboard a merchant sailing vessel are excellent. I had to put on a sweater as he described sailing around Cape Horn and having to handle lines and sails bare-handed.

It saved us at least 5 miles of heavy cycling uphill. Even more useful, was meeting Mr. Comstock many times along the route. His knowledge and history of cycling the coast is amazing and he is a truly valuable resource. In lieu of traveling alongside him (which you may well get the opportunity to do since he cycles the coast often), his book will help you chart your course, understand elevation details, where the next water stop may be found, and other minutiae of riding this stretch of the coast. It's light enough to carry with you and straightforward enough to digest each evening in preparation of your next day's cycle.

Excellent, detailed info for the California cyclist By Cali Cyclist Great details for cyclists like myself who take epic Big Sur bike trips and need access to campgrounds, hotels, grocery stores and other key things. Obviously written by someone who's experienced such travel firsthand, the book is great to bring along so you can reference it as you cycle this beautiful part of California.

Excellent Guide of Big Sur By Amateur mechanic By the time we got this book, my girlfriend and I had reached Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, a little less than halfway through Big Sur. We wished we had this book all along. It's thorough without being overwhelming and small enough to pack along on a trip. Simply put, if you're biking Big Sur, you'll want this book. The book provides pretty much any information you want about bicycling through Big Sur. It's organized into easily bikeable day-long segments; in other words, each chapter reflects a standard day of biking through Big Sur, beginning at campsite A and ending at campsite B. The next chapter picks up at campsite B and takes you to campsite C. Each chapter offers a short, narrative overview of the day's riding, then proceeds through a mile-by-mile accounting of elevation, roadside attractions, food, water, toilets, campsites, and anything else you'd want to know about the area. Campsites are rated for their desirability; days are rated for their difficulty; mileages are carefully calibrated to roadside mile marker posts. And so it goes, from Monterey to San Luis Obispo. We have no complaints about the book. It's well-written, easy to read, very helpful, and packs easily on a trip. Highly recommended.

Analogue of Craft historiography, brought up to date through the author's own experiential praxis. A discursive investigation of magical beliefs and practises in England since 600CE to the post-modern fall-out of the 21st century, analysing in particular its influences and survival strategies. Emphasis is placed on Christian, Heathen, and Hermetic Praxis, with provocative, critical study of the concepts of Lucifer, Witch-Blood, Sin-Eating and their influences on modern Traditional Craft praxes. "A driving thirst for knowledge is the forerunner of wisdom. Knowledge is a state that all organic life possesses, wisdom is the reward of the spirit, gained in the search for knowledge. Truth is variable - what is true now, will not be true tomorrow, since the temporal truths are dependent upon ethics and social mores - therefore wisdom is possibly eternal Truth, untouched by man's condition. So we must come to the heart of the people, a belief that is based upon Eternity, and not upon social needs or pressures - the 'witch' belief then is concerned with wisdom, our true name, then the wise people and wisdom is our aim." - Robert Cochrane 1931-1966 Foreword by Nicolaj de Mattos Frisvold / Section One: Discourses on the History of Magic.Influence and impact of Christianity upon the Development and Evolution of Magic: 600-1600CE. 1: Survival of Classical, Roman and Teutonic Magical Concepts and Practices under the Early Church. 600 - 1000CE 2: The Theological Renaissance 1000CE - 1300CE 3: Heresy and Early Witchcraft 1300CE-1600CE 4: The Hermetic Renaissance. 1400-1700 Section Two: Discourses on the Craft 5: It's all in a Name: Lucifer, an Ancient Heresy 6: The Profane Art of Masking 7: Witch-Blood, a Modern Heresy? 8: Sin Eating: Its relevance to the Craft 9: Traditional Witchcraft in the 21st Century 10: Which Craft?

Review Secrets firmly supported by the twin pillars of history and Tradition. By literally parting the veil, much needed material in the form of Ten Discourses, prove classic reading, mandatory for all Seekers.~Marcuswell researched and informative, drawing on literature and folklore as well as documented fact, but differs in that the author proffers her own interpretations and insights: she is prepared to challenge such sacred cows as witch blood, clearly defines different traditions within the Craft and sets us straight about the origins and reasons for many modern ritual practices like casting a circle, the use of correspondences, the relevance of salt etc

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Veil finally lifted? By Louis C. This is the second publication by Shani Oates, Maiden and Head of the Clan of Tubal Cain. This book is split in two sections. In the first one we learn the history of magic through the millennia. It is all referenced and cross referenced and cross-referenced with plenty quotations from the great minds of history itself. The second section is a collection of discourses on the Craft. All expressed unbiased and with great emphasis on Truth. One of the later chapters is dedicated to a theme that has been unfortunately a great point of heated debate. The very thing that hinder our journey towards gnosis, Ego, otherwise known in many so called Traditional groups of recent years that concern themselves with "authenticity" (sic) and revenue as Witch Blood.Truth itself is the Grail. And we can ALL aspire to attain it and as beautifully expressed by the Author, "isn't such a prize worth harrowing even the Gates of Hell for?

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A True Classic By Marcus L. Acacesius It has long been recognized by occultists and determined Seekers for quite some time now that, as the 20th century reached its troubled climax in giving birth to the 21st, many of the ancient secrets would have to be revealed of necessity. In this book, penned by one of those rarest of the rare, who has both sought & found a true Well of the Wyrd from which to drink, all of these secrets are firmly supported by the twin pillars of history and Tradition. Shani Oates, as an active adept within the inner circle of an authentic later day Mystery cult, preserves the inner Mysteries while still providing the real substance which makes the practice of the arcane arts a possibity to be actualized. She does so by literally parting the veil, and as such, she adds her name to the select roster of such rare authors as Paul Huson. Even as I write, some esoteric schools are investigating, maintaining, and teaching aspects of the ancient Mysteries that would otherwise have already been obscured or lost to forvever, laying buried beneath today's lamentable avalanche of 'new age' feathers; which while empty fluff, nonetheless weigh quite heavily against Tradition. This book provides much needed material in the form of Ten Discourses, all of which are composed delightfully while running over with the real thing in this time of pale imitations and make-it-up-you-go along fantasy. Shani Oates does anything but "go along" with this corrupting trend of foolish fantasy regarding the Craft. This book will, however, go along to prove itself a true classic. Consider it mandatory reading for all Seekers who wish to profit from rare and invaluable signposts along the often treacherous winding and crooked Path of The Cunning Folk, This path is the razor's edge itself in this, the Age of Iron, the time of quickening or failure. Shani Oates proves an authentic guide across a part of the sharp edge itself, from which so many topple endlessly, left forvever cleaved in twain falling forver within bottomless Abyss of error.~Marcus

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Traditional Challenge! By Shani Oates From 'The Hedge Wytch' [Samhain edition 2011]"What an inspirational writer! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The Arcane Veil is this author's eagerly awaited second book and it delivers on multiple levels. The author's knowledge is outstanding both in depth and application, and you are given an enlightened overview of the Craft's real background, not the nostalgic pap that is peddled in too many modern new age books. Each essay ends with a useful bibliography for further reading. The book discusses the many aspects of the Craft through specific themes. This is well researched and informative, drawing on literature and folklore as well as documented fact, but differs in that the author proffers her own interpretations and insights: she is prepared to challenge such sacred cows as witch blood, clearly defines different traditions within the Craft and sets us straight about the origins and reasons for many modern ritual practices like casting a circle, the use of correspondences, the relevance of salt etc. The book challenges certain traditional practices that some would prefer to see set in stone whilst also encouraging us to deepen our understanding of others, but always from a spiritually led perspective. It is not afraid to acknowledge crossovers with other faiths, specifically Christianity, yet holds true to the mystical core of Traditional Craft. Included is a fascinating and thought provoking essay on the little known subject of Sin Eating, which has nothing to do with the Catholic concept, but clarifies some of Robert Cochrane's oft misinterpreted ideas about sin and certain ritual observances. Altogether, this book has an astonishing depth and breadth, and though written in a very academic style is unexpectedly relatively easy reading, enhanced by a few beautifully drawn, black and white illustrations and a lovely, enigmatic cover painting. The whole book gently leads us beyond the veil and draws us to a more perceptive awareness of the Craft. We do not have to agree with the author's views, but I doubt many of us could argue a case with such passion, intelligence and insight as you will find here. This lady not only has a superior understanding of her Craft, but she obviously walks her talk and is dedicated to her path. It is a privilege to read such elevating and accomplished work. Every witch and serious student of the arcane should have this book in their personal library."

How do converts to a religion come to feel an attachment to it? The New Muslims of Post-Conquest Iran answers this important question for Iran by focusing on the role of memory and its revision and erasure in the ninth to eleventh centuries. During this period, the descendants of the Persian imperial, religious, and historiographical traditions not only wrote themselves into starkly different early Arabic and Islamic accounts of the past but also systematically suppressed much knowledge about pre-Islamic history. The result was both a new "Persian" ethnic identity and the pairing of Islam with other loyalties and affiliations, including family, locale, and sect. This pioneering study examines revisions to memory in a wide range of cases, from Iran's imperial and administrative heritage to the Prophet Muhammad's stalwart Persian companion, Salman al-Farisi, and to memory of Iranian scholars, soldiers, and rulers in the mid-seventh century. Through these renegotiations, Iranians developed a sense of Islam as an authentically Iranian religion, as they simultaneously shaped the broader historiographic tradition in Arabic and Persian.

The New Muslims of Post-Conquest Iran: Tradition, Memory, and Conversion (Cambridge Studies in Islamic Civilization), by Dr Sarah Bowen Savant

Review "The New Muslims of Post-Conquest Iran will prove fascinating to anyone interested in identity narratives and how authors shape the past in the service of the present. Savant builds a bridge between the history of Persia and the memory of Persia, and atop this bridge we can clearly witness the inherent tension in any identity between the old and the new." Elizabeth Urban, Marginalia"The New Muslims of Post-Conquest Iran might ultimately shape Iranian and Islamic studies not only by contributing novel scholarship to the field, but also by speaking to non-specialists' interests as well." Mahdi Tourage, American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences

About the Author Sarah Bowen Savant is a historian of religion and an Associate Professor at the Aga Khan University, Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in London. Her publications include Genealogy and Knowledge in Muslim Societies: Understanding the Past (2013), co-edited with Helena de Felipe, as well as book chapters and journal articles treating early Islamic history and historiography.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A valuable contribution By Madeleine The first book-length study in a European language of Iran's conversion to Islam in the ninth to eleventh centuries, with a focus on the historical consciousness of Iranians at that time. It emphasizes the importance of a shared history for groups and traces the remolding of Iranian history and identity that occurred when Iran's heritage was reevaluated in light of Islam. A valuable contribution to the field and a must read for any serious scholar interested in Iran's conversion to Islam.

A Journey to the Rocky Mountains in the Year 1839 (Classic Reprint), by F. A. Wislizenus

From the Author FREDERICK ADOLPH WISLIZENUS (1810-1889) was born in Germany, the son of a pastor, and originally planned to enter the ministry until the natural sciences captured his interest. He studied medicine at the University of Zurich, served in hospitals in Paris and New York, and eventually set up practice in the American Midwest. In later life, he explored the American Southwest more thoroughly, with the full support of the U.S. government. A respected naturalist and writer, he was a charter member of the Academy of Science of St. Louis and one of the founders of the Missouri Historical Society.

From the Back Cover With a keen and ardent eye, Wislizenus, a German physician, recounts his ramblings in the American West. Seized by a wanderlust that compelled him to leave his rural practice as a country doctor behind, albeit temporarily, Wislizenus joined an expedition of fur traders and, funded by his own modest savings, journeyed through Wyoming and Idaho on the Oregon Trail and then into Colorado. Here he regales us with notes on the geography and history of the region, as well as observations on the wildlife, plants, and peoples of the mountains, capturing in captivating words a now greatly changed realm.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. decent read !! By beejek this book is a reprint of the original and a little bit short in length for my taste. That being said, it is full of detail and has some great information and the true feel of the times. (1840's america fur trade era). The Good Doctor wrotevery well and includes a lot of interesting observations and how life really was then; not only for him but the people, animals, and territory around him on his journey. I would love to find an original copy of this book complete with maps. They are cut out of this reprinted volume.
