Born into a comfortable and affluent New England family, Richard Henry Dana (who once studied under the great Ralph Waldo Emerson) disconcertingly took to the high seas in 1834 as a common sailor, an experience that would color his classic memoir Two Years Before the Mast. Despite his failing vision thanks to a childhood illness, Dana served onboard a merchant vessel, traveling from Massachusetts southward, with stops along South America and in California. A fascinating read for maritime enthusiasts or lovers of history, Dana’s Before the Mast is a vigorous account of a life at sea in the 19th century.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The best sea story ever! By Terri For anyone who ever served on a ship as a sailor this is like returning home. Dana tells a story of long work hours, little sleep, and less than good food. I read this book 50 years ago when I was an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy the details are just as real now as they were then. Dana is so rich in his description of shipboard life that you don't just read about life at sea, you experience it.Lou Smith

Tiresome and redundant By Rogerfromrhodesia Sitting and reading about the exhausting, active but repetitive life of a sailor is quite boring; unlike that of a sailor himself. However there are some insightful passages that do shed light; like looking in through a window of time into America's past.

A well-written portrait of a sailor's life By W H Thomas Richard Dana's descriptions and opinions of life aboard a merchant sailing vessel are excellent. I had to put on a sweater as he described sailing around Cape Horn and having to handle lines and sails bare-handed.
