The Boy With A Bamboo Heart is the inspiring story of Dr Amporn Wathanavongs. Orphaned at 5 years of age in a remote village in rural Thailand, Lek was thrust into a life-long struggle to find his place in the world. Alone and impoverished, he survived by begging for food in the markets of Surin until he was recruited to fight as a boy soldier in jungles of Cambodia. Despair and poverty lead him to attempt suicide until a stranger intervened with an offer of help. Thus begins Lek’s journey to become Dr Amporn, a man best known as a foster father to the sick, poor and destitute children of Thailand. The Boy With A Bamboo Heart is no ordinary book, it is the inspiring story of one man’s journey to find his true calling in the face of unspeakable adversity. Extracted from The Boy With A Bamboo Heart A hand yanked at my shoulder and pulled me away from my mother. I looked up and peered into the dark brown eyes of the villager. “Come, Lek, it be time they start now.” I clutched my mother’s hand, bit my bottom lip, forcing the tears to stop. I refused to cry at her funeral. I held her hand for the last time. I gave it a squeeze before releasing my grip. I was left with nothing to hold onto, not even nat leaves used to keep ghosts away. I tucked my trembling hands between my stomach and the rolled edge of my sarong. My chin dropped to my chest. I did not want to look at anyone, or see anyone looking at me. The villagers who had pulled and pushed the cart from our hut then approached my mother’s body. They lifted her by the shoulders and feet to move her onto the pyre. Someone I did not recognize placed a few jasmine blossoms next to her body, a small gesture to adorn her final resting place. One of the monks then leaned forward and placed dried bamboo shoots on each corner of the table. He set the first bunch on fire. The other three monks repeated the same actions. I did not want to see what would come next, but I could not take my eyes off my mother’s body. I dug my nails deeper and deeper into the soft flesh of my stomach and bit my tongue harder. I felt no pain. It gave me courage to keep looking. When the last monk had lit his bunch of bamboos shoots, I looked around to see what the other people were doing. Everyone was watching the fire without moving or talking. They had never seen a body cremated in this way. The flames licked the table and crept toward my mother’s body. I stopped breathing. The flames joined hands, turning the sheets and sarong into a curtain of fire. A faint smell of jasmine rose from the burning flowers. I turned away as pain exploded in my belly. I tried to scream and call for help but the words would not come out. I tried to call for her. Still nothing came out. The pain inside me had robbed me of my voice. I forced myself to look at my mother so I could see her one last time. The flames consumed her. The sounds of burning wood and popping bamboo thundered in my head. It sounded just as scary as when she had screamed in the middle of the night in agony from her illness. I covered my ears and howled. This time my voice rose above the burning fire. As I looked around for help, people looked away. They turned their eyes to stare at the monks. I stamped my feet and beat my fists against my thighs to get their attention. I was not crying, I was hollering. No one moved. I stepped towards the fire. I was determined to hold her hand again. I needed to touch her one last time. The heat scorched my forehead. An old villager reached over and pulled me back, without tenderness, without anger. I dug my toes into the ground. I refused to back away from the fire. I could not let my mother begin her journey to the other life like this. She at least had to know that I was with her. The fire that was consuming my mother’s body was also searing loneliness into my heart. I stood my ground while the flames destroyed the last of any affection and tenderness I would know for the rest of my life.

The author is wise to avoid embellishments and remain faithful to the charm, and the horrors, in Lek's life. We are left with a book that idolizes nothing except the human spirit, demonizes nothing but privileged elitism. The story of a soul broken by men of violence and "reclaimed" by men of faith, both Buddhist and Christian. I found the honesty of the successful man struggling with his internal demons touching, and hitting "close to home."

By Phuong Nguyen The most remarkable thing about the book is the steady flow of insightful word choice revealing a depth of sensitivity, skill and dedication that Chantal Jauvin adopted in writing the book. “I had to acquire the skin of an orphan who begged for his food, carried and used a rifle as a boy, took the vows of a monk, and dedicated himself to social work,” Jauvin said. From the very first lines about Lek’s mother’s funeral, the details of the scene, the physical separation distress of an orphaned boy when accompanying its mother's corpse to the pyre, the inner feelings of the five-year-old Lek depicted vividly can bring readers to tears. This skillful narrative remains consistent throughout the book, from the harrowing experiences of fighting in the jungles to the struggles with the depths of poverty. Readers will find themselves immersed in the illuminating descriptions of Thai exotic landscape, of the Buddhist ways and practices and will be surprised by how deep Chantal delved into the life and culture of this Asian land.Somewhere in the book, readers can find a spiritual pathway of a young man who keeps trying his best to navigate his inner-self in seeking of enlightenment, either when being a monk and later a baptized Christian. All we can see is his courageousness, determination to fight against the evils inside himself, to overcome moments of self-loathing in search for love and great deeds. The author also shows her masterful skills in using conversations to deftly answer some spiritual questions we all struggle with. The story is, by all means, no short of a hero’s journey, the type that Joseph Campell has generalized in The hero’s journey. The beauty of this unique journey lies in the fact that it is a true story of an ordinary person becoming a hero not by superpower but by making difficult choices in many heart-wrenching situations. “The world has much need for everyday heroes, the people who inspire us to reach a little further, a littler higher, or a little longer. The people who set our imagination on fire and make us believe that if we try hard enough, we can make a difference.” Chantal Jauvin, in writing Dr. Amporn's story has given inspiration to not only Thais but to anyone who thinks their obstacles in life are insurmountable.Chantal has incorporated her sharp mind of an acclaimed international barrister and her quest for exploring other cultures and connecting with people from all walks of life into writing The Boy with a Bamboo Heart, which makes the book a riveting memoir of a no ordinary life.

Platten This is an interesting biography that tests the reader while it describes selected events in the life of a boy who was orphaned at the age of 5, and made his own way from there. There are numerous stories along the way which describe his discoveries about how to improve his life that are frequently followed by stories which show the boy, or man, had not internalized these discoveries. It describes how difficult it was for him to sort out how to live up to the ideals he was learning about while struggling to survive in a culture where the small minority of connected wealthy folks have little or no regard for the lot of the poor or starving masses. That a child could survive this ordeal and still achieve so much is amazing. That he was willing to share his failures and doubts is remarkable.

"Mum, you're not like the rest of your family," her children say. Naomie replies, "That's because I have a fighting spirit." Zambian women often face extraordinary challenges that women in the Western world can hardly imagine: crippling poverty, exposure to HIV, barriers to education, insufficient healthcare services, scarce resources for their children's needs, family betrayals and even the threat of witchcraft. Yet in spite of the obstacles, many of them persevere and succeed in creating better lives for themselves and their children. Naomie and the ten other women portrayed in this book know the secret to overcoming hardships is to work hard, to challenge expectations, to be strong, to be true to themselves and to laugh, even when times are hard. Their stories are, in many ways, universal - the stories of women overcoming hardships for the sake of their families - yet they are as specific and as unique as each of the women featured in this book.

There are broken links, supposedly to play sections, but who knows since the plays themselves are not contained in this "trilogy"? I'm just glad it was free.

This is a book about New York City, as seen through the eyes and sensibilities of Danish architect and artist Mikael Olrik. The combination of watercolor, photograph and text offers the reader an original, multi-dimensional experience of a city so well known and yet still to be discovered, still mystifying. Trained to identify both what is important and what is distinctive, Olrik is gifted, with an intuitive sense of what to capture, what is abiding and totemic about a particular place. While one might anticipate the pastoral Central Park scenes and such landmarks as the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge, the images of Soho tenements and Williamsburg street scenes serve as stark reminders that New York may very well be the most complex city in the world, a city Mikael Olrik respectfully refers to as a living organism. After many extended stays there, he is comfortable in New York; always ready to process its changes and embrace its surprises, but never complacent or jaded.'Walks in My New York" is just that - a strolling, personal tour of New York City and parts of four of its boroughs.

Thoughtful guide, Mikael invites you to join him. Positioning you at each stop, he gives you the broad view of an architect, the specificity of an artist, the straight-forwardness of a photographer, and the companionable text of a diarist. You are drawn in and made complicit in the experience. As a bonus, small maps accompany each entry and act as a sort of 'GPS' in print. Mikael Olrik sees to it that you have everything you need to explore a great and restless city abounding in sights and stories. Everything, that is, except a pair of sturdy walking shoes!

Goldberger It often takes an “outsider” to fully appreciate the essence of a foreign country, its culture, its people and its panoply of sights. This is especially true when it comes to sizing up the magnificent and variegated metropolis that is New York! A place carved indelible in almost everyone’s consciousness, whether based on direct or indirect familiarity via movies and TV--unforgettable scenes, filled with skyscrapers, historic, old village charm, splendid city parks and bridges, the elegance of Park and Fifth Avenues with its fashionable stores and mansions, the myriad of yellow cabs and buses in the midst of heavy traffic—not to mention the boisterous Times Square cacophony of Broadway, with its majestic neon lights and its thousands of people moving about. In this book of amazingly riveting watercolors, rendered with an artist’s eye for just the right color tone for their atmospheric impact along with the imbued skill of an architect’s structural know-how, his many photographic snapshots and lovingly rendered textual accompaniments leaves even a New Yorker like myself transfixed with the wonder of all that makes up the story of the Big Apple, its various neighborhoods (in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Harlem, among them) its varied populace, and their exciting impact. I can think of no better guide for the novice visitor-- as well as of interest to older-timers in NY in giving us an infusion of pride, if not also providing some new insights. The author, a Dane, is an accomplished architect/artist who obviously is deeply in love with our city and where he apparently has spent a good bit of time over the years. He is to be commended for this treasure of a book that so wonderfully renders the soul of our city--especially with his unique artistic sensibility. A winner!

This book gave me a touch of Manhattan that was sublime as a guide the first time I visit this "small village". In fact it is not only when you visit Manhattan the first time because it gives you so many details and special views of this magnificent part of New York, that it without any doubt can be your personal guide every time.Flemming Deichmann, Copenhagen

A Beautiful And Unique Look At New York City By Stephen Serra This is a beautiful book which does indeed reflect the author's time spent in the Provence region of France mixed with a passionate love for New York City. The vibrant warm colors often mixed with clear blues make the artwork come to life. The anecdotes of city life are interesting and communicate the rhythms and characteristics of city life. It's a soft, lovely look at New York through the eyes of an artist.

Seventy years after it took place, the Holocaust committed against the Jews of Europe during World War II continues to cast a giant shadow over humankind. Man's inhumanity to man is not a thing of the past. Genocidal action is still commonplace around the globe. Has humankind learned the lessons of the past? Is the human race doomed to live in a perpetual state of war and self-destruction? Explaining the Holocaust shows how, given the right circumstances, human beings can lose their humanity. Does that mean that the ethical teachings of the major religions are wishful thinking? This book tackles two questions that continue to be asked by people everywhere: Why did a highly civilized nation like Germany, in the middle of the twentieth century, commit the most heinous crime in all of human history? And if indeed there is a loving God who made a covenant with the people of Israel, why were millions of innocent, peaceful Jews dehumanized, starved, tortured, and systematically murdered? Explaining the Holocaust spares no one in discussing the enormity of the evil. But it also shows how the divine spark in human beings did not die during those years of darkness, and why we still have a glimmer of hope. "Explaining the Holocaust is balanced, graceful, and probing. Including both Jewish and Christian theological responses to the Holocaust, as well as voices from around the world, Rabbi Schreiber presents an historical overview of the Holocaust and Holocaust studies. His style is personal, engaging, and conversational, yet also reveals his extensive knowledge and erudition. An excellent book for small-group discussion." --Alice Ogden Bellis, Professor of Old Testament, Howard University School of Divinity Mordecai Schreiber is the author of several books on the Bible and on the Holocaust. His latest book is Hearing the Voice of God (2013). He is the founder of Schreiber Translations and Schreiber Publishing. Now retired from both, he devotes his time to research and writing.

By Charles R Butler III This sensitive account of the Holocaust from a Jew living in Palestine at the time of the Second World War speaks volumes about the combination of indifference, frustration, and lack of solidarity which contributed to the compressed explosion we know as the Holocaust. Rabbi Schreiber pulls no punches, exposes many flaws, and yet comes across as full of compassion. Christians need to see this as as wake up call for a theological rethinking of the God who suffers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Germans didn't really think the British would go to war, and the war was lost by that, Karau says. A good overview. By lyndonbrecht This is an interesting read, and Karau's Preface says the book is aimed at the student who asks why Germany lost the war. It's based on the existing literature. The writing is good, the maps useful; there are no illustrations. The main strength of the book is that is covers a great deal quite succinctly and clearly. The individual chapters can be read separately rather than the whole book. Essentially they lost, Karau says, because in 1914 decision makers did not really think the British would join France and Russia; the British navy set up a smothering blockade and from that point, the war was lost. Among the regrettable decisions were imposing too rigorous a treaty on the defeated Russians in 1917, which gave the ither Allies a sense of what a German Europe would be like. Karau sees recklessness in the Schleiffen plan, ignoring opportunities to broach a general peace and the last great offensive in 1918.Chapter 1 examines the economic and military balance in 1914. Chapter 2 considers the Schleiffen plan. Chapter 3 looks at the British bloackade, and also at food policy and related in Germany during the war; it's quite good. Chapter 4 discusses the war at sea, and is also a good chapter. Chapter 5 examines battlefield issues in 1916. Chapter 6 looks at the blockade and submarine warfare. Chapter 7 discusses the end of the Second Reich, as he puts it. Chapter 8 is a brief summary of why Germany lost the war.

The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in the year approximately 1603, and based on the short story Un Capitano Moro ("A Moorish Captain") by Cinthio, a disciple of Boccaccio, first published in 1565. This tightly constructed work revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his beloved wife, Desdemona; his loyal lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted but unfaithful ensign, Iago. Because of its varied and current themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike and has been the basis for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations.

Othello, by William Shakespeare

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

Othello, a work by shakespeare's By Matthew Kordas Othello is my favorite of all of shakespeare's, it maybe a little hard to read at first for some of the younger readers but is a good book to get though. It is the tale of a man whom is viewed as somewhat if an outsider who leads his army to a battle, only to find the battle to be already won. What he does not know is that he still has a battle inside himself and leads to his downfall. This is a great read for those in school trying to challenge there reading abilities

A concise, accessible history of one of the most important and fascinating conflicts of the 20th century

On March 8, 1965, 3,500 U.S. Marines of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade made an amphibious landing at Da Nang on the south central coast of South Vietnam, marking the beginning of a conflict that would haunt American politics and society for many years, even after the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1972. For the people of North Vietnam it was just another in a long line of foreign invaders. For 2,000 years they had struggled for self-determination, coming into conflict during that time with the Chinese, the Mongols, the European colonial powers, the Japanese, and the French. Now it was the turn of the United States, a far-away nation reluctant to go to war but determined to prevent Vietnam from falling into Communist hands. This history explains how the U.S. became involved in its longest war, a conflict that, from the outset, many claimed it could never win. It details the escalation of American involvement from the provision of military advisors and equipment to the threatened South Vietnamese, to an all-out shooting war involving American soldiers, airmen, and sailors, of whom around 58,000 would die and more than 300,000 would be wounded. Their struggle was against an indomitable enemy, able to absorb huge losses in terms of life and infrastructure. The politics of the war are examined and the decisions and ambitions of five presidents are addressed in the light of what many have described as a defeat for American might. The book also explores the relationship of the Vietnam War to the Cold War politics of the time.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An Impossible Task By Andy in Washington My major problem with this work is the title---it is an impossibility. As the author himself shows, the events leading to, during and and resulting from the Vietnam War are complex, involved and about as convoluted as possible. But still, I had to admit that the author delivers just what he promised.=== The Good Stuff ===* Gordon Kerr writes well. His book is a joy to read. He makes his points clearly and succinctly, and provides some background for how he reached those conclusions. There is none of the academic nonsense of 200 word sentences and obscure vocabulary- Kerr impresses his readers through quality of prose and logical deductions.* Kerr tries mightily to put the Vietnam War into context. He examines 2000 years of SE Asian history, and looks at the politics and motivations of various nations, including France, the US, Russian, and China in starting and prolonging military action in Vietnam. During the war itself, the author discusses US and world politics, the American protest movement, Watergate, poverty and many other ancillary issues that had a major effect on how the US prosecuted the war.* There is very little purely military action described in the book. The military side of the Tet and Linebacker campaigns are described in a few paragraphs. Kerr is far more interested in the how these campaigns affected the political side of the war.* This is not a “conventional” history book. Kerr takes opinions on many of the issues, and primarily presents his interpretation of events. For example, the author believes that Kennedy was willing to escalate the war in Vietnam as a way to draw attention away from his failures in Cuba. While this is certainly a possibility, it is by no means a “proven” historical fact. Kerr treats it as such, and does not spend pages describing other possible explanations. Depending on your preferences as a reader, you will either appreciate this or despise it.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* My biggest complaint is the scope of the book. In some ways, Vietnam war has had more influence on the world that WWII. It showed the benefits, limitations and consequences of “war” between superpowers armed with nuclear weapons. The war highlighted shortcomings in the American political process, and probably influenced future US geopolitical actions. This list is very long, and any of these topics could easily fill a book all on its own. As I reader, I could almost feel Kerr wringing his hands over how much of any of these areas to include in a “short” history. I offer this complaint with no idea of how to solve it. Kerr did not set out to write “A Very Long and Complicated History of Every Event that Influenced or Was Caused by The Vietnam War”, and I probably wouldn’t want to read it if he did. It is, however, frustrating to the reader to deal with numerous dead ends.* Finally, Kerr is opinionated. He mentions many possibilities, but does not pursue them, or even offer an especially strong defense of his opinion. Did Nixon finally throw in a losing hand just to get the US out of Vietnam? Was it good politics? Did it tarnish American credibility going forward? Did it matter? Kerr postulates that Nixon was distracted by Watergate, and as a result was not as attentive to Vietnam is its final days. Certainly possible, but not the only explanation for the US “withdrawl”.=== Summary ===I liked the book, and enjoyed reading it. By presenting one story line and sticking with it, Kerr at least provides one possible analysis of Vietnam and its causes and consequences. He does not get all tied up in knots the way other books on the subject have, but instead makes his point and plows onward. Casual and serious history fans will likely enjoy the book, although may find its limited scope frustrating.I was able to read this book through the courtesy of the publisher and Netgalley.

Excerpt from Mogreb-El-Acksa: A Journey in MoroccoTo Wayfaring Men.Sirs, the Holy Scriptures, which, as we know, were written for our learning, seem to imply that some of us are fools. This may be so, and when I moralise, wrapped in the frequent contemplation of my travels, upon lost opportunities, lack of discernment, and on the general folly incident to all mankind, but which each man deems centred in himself, I think so too. But still a traveller in this travelling world, going perhaps to nowhere, or to some place that he would rather never visit, cannot but find his most congenial public amongst wayfaring men. Therefore to you who, like myself, have crossed, or even now are crossing, desert or pampa in the night; riding towards Capella, if in the southern hemisphere (Sohail in Africa), keeping the wind a little blowing on your right cheek, dismounting now and then to smoke and slack the girths; then camping on some river, sleeping fitfully and rising oft to view your horses feeding so quietly under the southern stars; or you who in the liner, ocean tramp, or even "windjammer" are going somewhere for no special reason, I now address myself.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mogreb-El-Acksa: A Journey in Morocco (Classic Reprint), by R. B. Cunninghame Graham

From the Back Cover R. B. Cunninghame Graham's trek into the Moroccan interior beyond Marrakesh is a classic example of British adventure travel. His ostensible purpose was to reach the forbidden city of Tarudant, where it was claimed no Christian had ever set foot, and which he attempted while variously disguised as a Turkish doctor and a sheikh from Fez. In the end, Cunninghame Graham's mission was a failure: halfway to his goal, he was captured and held prisoner for four months in the medieval castle of Kintafi in the Atlas Mountains. But his loss was the reader's gain, as Edward Garnet points out in his introduction, for "the episode of this enforced detention in (a) strange semi-Arcadian, semi-feudalistic scene, while the traveller watches day after day the panorama of Berber life...is unique in the literature of travel". Part history, part social commentary as only the British wrote it, Cunninghame Graham's account of his travels makes fascinating reading nearly a century later.

In Mogreb-el-Acksa, published in 1898, Graham describes his attempt to cross the Atlas Mountains and reach the forbidden city of Tarudant. However, he was detained in the mountains for four months by the Kaid of Kintafi, and ultimately turned back to Marakesh. The places he visits and the people he meets come alive, and a current of humor bubbles throughout the narrative. His observations on western vs. eastern cultures, in many instances unfavorable to both but usually funny and profound, apparently made the book unpopular when it was published. I recommended the book to two friends, one a world traveller, the other a Moroccan. Both loved it.

WINNER in 2015 Beverly Hills International Book Awards and Finalist in 2015 USA Best Book Awards and 2016 International Book Awards! -- A personal historic photospective of Taekwon-Do through Grand Master Bok Man Kim's personal photo collection spanning nearly 60 years. Grand Master Kim's training in the martial arts began in 1941. By 1950, he had joined the Korean Army and was transferred to General Choi Hong Hi's division in early 1955 before the new Korean art was named, and advised Gen. Choi on many things related to Taekwon-Do. He drove Gen. Choi to the Naming Committee meetings where members would agree in 1955 to name the martial art "Tae Kwon Do" and recommend the name to then-president Syngman Rhee. Grand Master Kim was a member of the first Taekwon-Do demo team to perform outside of Korea in China and Vietnam in 1959. He helped Gen. Choi develop 15 of the Ch'ang Hon patterns and provided input on as many as four more. GM Kim helped Gen. Choi write the first English book about Taekwondo in 1963; Taekwon-Do: The Art of Self-Defence was published in 1965. GM Kim was a founding member of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), and every country where he demonstrated and organized Taekwondo became member nations when it was founded in March 1966. GM Kim also lead the first ITF demonstration team in 1967. In 1978, GM Kim sponsored the 3rd Asian Taekwon-Do Championships in Hong Kong, which was sanctioned and promoted by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). Ten years later, Taekwondo would be a demonstration sport in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. GM Kim has starred in two feature films in Hong Kong in 1973 and appeared in as many as three earlier films. GM Kim has published three earlier books about martial arts: Practical Taekwon-Do: Defenses Against Weapons (1979); Chun Kuhn Do: The Complete Wellness Art (2002); and Taekwondo: Defense Against Weapons (2012), which was selected as a Best Books Award Finalist by U.S. Book News. TAEKWON-DO: Origins of the Art: Bok Man Kim's Historic Photospective (1955-2015) takes readers through the history of Taekwon-Do as seen through Grand Master Kim's photographs.

Taekwon-Do: Origins of the Art: Bok Man Kim's Historic Photospective (1955-2015), by Bok Man Kim

Review As the saying goes, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then this book is worth so much more, truly priceless! It is a compilation of historic photographs and other digital images that correctly paint the true timeline of Taekwon-Do. No longer can people give any credence to the myth that Taekwondo is 2,000 years old. Here in the latest book by Grand Master Kim Bok-Man, a former Master-Sergeant in the Korean Army, one can see Taekwon-Do develop and expand outside of Korea from the very onset by the man largely responsible for the initial dissemination. This book also goes a long way in crediting the true original pioneers, who have been ignored for far too long by the political nonsense often offered as Tae Kwon Do history. I have been blessed to have spent so much time in Grandmaster Kim's company. Now all of the Tae Kwon Do world can invite him into their homes and dojangs for a visit with the pictorial history of our beloved Korean Martial Art of Self-Defense. --Dr. George Vitale, Ph.D., 8th DanFrankly, I can't believe it...Taekwon-Do: Origins of the Art is excellent. The cover alone captures you from the start. Here is a pictorial chronology of a man who has tirelessly dedicated his life to Taekwondo. It is a document of historical importance that, hopefully, will inspire practitioners throughout the millenium. The Taoists say that if you wish to realize immortality, share your knowledge. If this is true, Kwanjangnim Kim will live on forever. --Master Doug Cook, 6th Dan, Author of Tae Kwon Do Black Belt Poomsae, Original Koryo & KoryoGrandmaster Kim Bok Man's photospective is Taekwondo out to prove itself. If ever you wanted to see the most audacious bare-knuckled, no-holds-barred practitioners taking on all challengers, Grandmaster Kim and members of that first historic ITF Demo Team have an incredible story to tell. But this isn't a dusty story of ancient history, it is a page-by-page prelude to what every current day practitioner should know of their art. What a fantastic resource to have in your collection. --Colin Wee, 6th Dan, Coordinator, International Alliance of Martial Arts Schools

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and would love more behind the scenes stories By Amazon Customer "Taekwon-Do, Origins of the Art: Bok Man Kim's Historic Photospective (1955-2015)". Probably the most unique TKD book I've read, in that it tells its story with hundreds of photographs rather than plain text. The history in here is phenomenal, and certainly adds important detail to other works such as the 'encyclopaedias' and "A Killing Art".I did find some of the captions repetitive, for example the naming of the members of the first ITF demo team is repeated several times, and would love more behind the scenes stories.I'm given to understand that this is so the material can be used as is for promotional purposes.NZ and Australian TKD enthusiasts will enjoy seeing plenty of pictures of Rhee Chong Chul and Yun Young Ku, pioneers of ITF Taekwon-Do downunder, who went on to found Rhee Tae Kwon Do and Yun Jung Do respectively. Not for the beginner, but a great book for unashamed TKD nerds.

By Mike Swope If you enjoy learning about early Taekwon-Do history, this book delivers. Grandmaster Kim Bok-Man is the oldest surviving founder of military Taekwon-Do in the ROK Army. He joined General Choi Hong-Hi just weeks before the art was named in 1955, and played many important roles for the next thirteen or so years. Among the roles he had: advisor and instructor of Taekwon-Do for Gen. Choi from 1955-onwards; member of the 1959 Demonstration team to Vietnam and Taiwan; helped Gen. Choi develop 15 of the Ch'ang Hon patterns 1963-1964; leader of the 1st ITF International Demonstration Team; created the first weapons patterns for Taekwon-Do which are still practiced today; and many more. A book you can open and find something new and interesting every time. More information about the book is available from http://www.moosulpublishing.com

His students and associates should enjoy it but I'm not sure about those who did not know him By LT This book is largely a collection of captioned photos relevant to Bok Man Kim with minimal textual content about the origins and development of the art. I found “A Killing Art: The Untold History of Tae Kwon Do” by Alex Gillis much more informative. I imagine this book will appeal to Bok Man Kim’s students but I’m not sure those who did not know him will enjoy it as much. To put this review in perspective, I started training in Tae Kwon Do in 1968 and trained under a number of high ranking Korean instructors on the east coast of the USA however I did not have the opportunity to study under Bok Man Kim. If I had known him I’m sure I would have enjoyed the book more and given it a higher rating.

It is a different world that seems to transport you every time you read something about it. Stumbling upon this book is a real treasure. This book is really an ultimate guide to the Viking Mythology. From their beliefs and religion, rituals and sacrifices - everything makes me more curious and eager to read more. Plus, you will not just be limited to one world - (spoiler alert!) there are nine worlds of Norse Mythology! Can you believe that?!For the wanderers who would like to be a part of a different world, this is the book for you. Thumbs up to Dan Jackson!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but 'Norse' sounds like the snorting of a giant battle stallion so we ... By Jake Cook The red-blooded, rip-roaring, gung-ho Gods beloved by the Vikings. We could have listed them as Nordic, but 'Norse' sounds like the snorting of a giant battle stallion so we went for that. The Vikings were a seafaring people from the late eighth to early 11th century who established a name for themselves as traders, explorers and warriors. They discovered the Americas long before Columbus and could be found as far east as the distant reaches of Russia. While these people are often attributed as savages raiding the more civilized nations for treasure and women, the motives and culture of the Viking people are much more diverse. These raiders also facilitated many changes throughout the lands from economics to warfare.I really enjoyed reading this book especially the sections about the prominent Viking figure heads from their history. The layout of the book made it really easy to digest the information as it covers some great points of Viking history that most people are unaware of. I have always been very interested in Viking mythology and this book was very intriguing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about viking mythology!
