2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Germans didn't really think the British would go to war, and the war was lost by that, Karau says. A good overview. By lyndonbrecht This is an interesting read, and Karau's Preface says the book is aimed at the student who asks why Germany lost the war. It's based on the existing literature. The writing is good, the maps useful; there are no illustrations. The main strength of the book is that is covers a great deal quite succinctly and clearly. The individual chapters can be read separately rather than the whole book. Essentially they lost, Karau says, because in 1914 decision makers did not really think the British would join France and Russia; the British navy set up a smothering blockade and from that point, the war was lost. Among the regrettable decisions were imposing too rigorous a treaty on the defeated Russians in 1917, which gave the ither Allies a sense of what a German Europe would be like. Karau sees recklessness in the Schleiffen plan, ignoring opportunities to broach a general peace and the last great offensive in 1918.Chapter 1 examines the economic and military balance in 1914. Chapter 2 considers the Schleiffen plan. Chapter 3 looks at the British bloackade, and also at food policy and related in Germany during the war; it's quite good. Chapter 4 discusses the war at sea, and is also a good chapter. Chapter 5 examines battlefield issues in 1916. Chapter 6 looks at the blockade and submarine warfare. Chapter 7 discusses the end of the Second Reich, as he puts it. Chapter 8 is a brief summary of why Germany lost the war.
