Established in 1867 in the Gallatin Valley of Montana, Fort Ellis played a key role in the development of the Montana frontier. From post commanders attacking the town to restoring order when riotous mobs got out of control, explore the ambivalent, albeit contentious, relationship from 1867 to 1886 between the civilians and soldiers in whimsical but dramatic fashion. Competing visions of economic and military conditions on the frontier led to a complex relationship that has all the drama of a Hollywood western. Join MSU-Billings history professor Dr. Thomas C. Rust as he examines the fort's impact on the social and economic development of early Bozeman, the problems of military command and the dynamics of the soldier-civilian interaction on Montana's frontier.

Disappointed By Ret Rography Living in the Fort Ellis area I was super pumped to find a book that would tell me the events and exercises, the expanse and operations that transpired here in the 1800s. Sorely let down. Am 7/8ths thru the book and other than learning how the number of fort occupants fluctuated over its operational period, I've not yet once encountered any information that would bring to life the past. What I have read repetitively is the interaction between Washington, DC and Fort Ellis, social impact of Fort Ellis and Bozeman, and of the troops inside FE, how many were Irish.I'd go on record to state this book is exclusively detailing the social exchanges, social backgrounds, and status of both the town of Bozeman and Fort Ellis. If you want to know what happened in and around FE, keep on searching.
