I wish to say a few words of warning to the large number of people for whom my book was not written. Hazlett This book offers a clear look at Edith Wharton's interesting attitudes toward northern Africa and the developing world. You can see her unapologetic francophilia and her rampant orientalism on display in ways that make readers in our own day very uncomfortable. Her desire to find in Morocco scenes from Scheherazade and Aladdin's Tales is constantly disrupted and frustrated by the actuality of human poverty, wretchedness, exploitation, and poor hygiene. It is High Time, in her opinion, for the French to come in and save the Moroccans from themselves.

Pierre Loti went also in spring and his tent was pitched over a meadow of white wild flowers. He traveled with a Calvary because of bandits. I learned a lot from his descriptive style and am writing like him!
