It's a great memoir of a trip that covers different emotions By sharon hogan It's Hilariously written, and will certainly seem familiar to anyone who has left a normal life behind in search of adventure, encountering new cultures, sights and tastes on the way. From the threat of a prison sentence, to the Serengeti, to surviving an earthquake near Everest. You don't need a break, you don't need to put it aside for a while , you just keep on reading and before you know it you've reached the end. It's a great memoir of a trip that covers different emotions, positive and negative, that come to play during such an adventure. It's about fear, yes but the fears Sharon faces don't make her a fearful person in my eyes. They are fears that most of us would have while travelling. This time they are just written down for everyone to see. Finally, I loved it because of small pieces of Sharon I could recognize in myself. You just have to read it for yourself.

The action starts straight away with a disastrous TEFL experience in Indonesia, leading to Sharon's arrest and threat of a long prison sentence. She then goes on to write about other adventures, from facing down predators in the Serengeti to surviving earthquakes near Mount Everest. This is a book about travel without the gloss - there will be altitude sickness, giant nettles and awkward 'lost in translation' moments - but Sharon writes about it all with humour, candidness and warmth.The author's personal voice shines through throughout the book and her observations are witty, often laugh-out-loud, and give a different take on the usual travel guide content.Overall a highly enjoyable read that leaves you wanting more.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. a good read By annie laurie I enjoyed this book of post civil war south,the male charaters are very well drawn but female characters are somewhat fuzzy. The most interesting view of white/black racial attitudes I've read and not so different from those of today. Read this one, I've just ordered 2 more free ones by this author as I find his writing very interesting and straight forward. There are some typos in the book but they aren't so bad that they interfere with the reading.

Major Southern Writer/Humorist Looks at Post Reconstruction Era By James Ellsworth Opie Percival Read (born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1852,) is an important Southern writer who edited newspapers, including the important Little Rock paper, the Arkansas Gazette. His keen observation of people and social mores in southern Arkansas led to his writing 'An Arkansas Planter', a major work singled out by the Gutenberg Project and available on Kindle. Academic reviewers feel he accurately captures the modes of expression (lyrical circumlocution and eloquence)typical of an educated Southerner of the day.'An Arkansas Planter' was published in 1896 and it is set in the post-Reconstruction era, when Southern legislatures were not dominated by newly-enfranchised African-Americans. Read was a Southerner of his own time but the views his most important characters express are family and community-centered and Liberal (as expressed in Rousseau, John Locke and Thomas Jefferson.) In this novel, the Arkansas Planter is 'The Major,' a Harvard-educated owner of 1000 acres of cotton land whose family gave its name to the surrounding county. He runs a household and a business with a bluff but sympathetic view and with 'malice toward none.'The Major is aided by a loving but church-oriented wife of firm convictions and he is comforted by a long-time boon companion and 'loveable scoundrel' named Gideon (Gid for most of the story.) He loves his two children--a strong-minded daughter with 'modern' and independent ideas and a son who flunked out of Harvard and has yet to find something to be good at. Other well-drawn characters enter into the story as required. The land itself takes on the quality of being a character at times and its topography, vegetation and colors are often invoked with lyrical affection.This is a novel with a great deal in it: The Major and Gid provide the basis for much humorous camaraderie as well as for passages of homespun and even scholastic philosophy. There are serious and accurate discussions of the relations between 'white' and 'negro' neighbours; between planter and highland white folk. The views of the time and place about religious differences between Protestant and Catholic confessions are given a sympathetic explanation. In fact, there is nothing about this book that is 'mean spirited.' As if that were not enough, Read fills out his pages with a subplot of Christian Love versus the love between husband and wife-to-be and throws in a local insurrection fomented by 'outside agitators' over Labor issues.So, the reader drops in on family evenings, confabs and joshing among menfolk, follows the course of true love or pulses with the pace of an unfolding crisis that leads to bloodshed. How will it ultimately affect the county?This is a wonderful book and we must be thankful to electronic publishing as the only way to keep important (once favourite) works of American literature available to any and all who might be interested.

About the Author Helen Kurtenbach Furr was born in 1929 and grew up in the farming community of Dimock, South Dakota, in the southeastern corner of the state. She married Allan “Doc” Furr in 1950, and they had two children. During Doc's career as a veterinarian in private practice and as a US government employee, the family moved across the United States-from north to south and west to east-a total of sixteen times in thirty-five years. Doc died in 2004. Helen now resides in a retirement village in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Homesteading and Moving On is her first book.

An outsider's take on Chilean life By MC A light-hearted but never shallow series of commentaries on all aspects of life in Chile from an outsider's perspective. The book deals with everyday adventures such as going to the market, dealing with city traffic, and tending a garden, as well as with government corruption, earthquakes, and the Mapuche Indian insurgency. It's full of interesting tidbits for prospective visitors to Chile, whether they want to start a business, buy a horse, or find some female companionship. The best part about it is that the comments often turn in unexpected directions, as when the section on hooking up reminds the reader that in Chile one must pay child support fro 28 years instead of 18. If that's not useful information, I don't know what is!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Can't beat these old tellings By Alan Venable It's so great that this book has been brought back into print. It's a newspaper reporter's very animated, excited reporting of the Homestead PA steel strike of 1892, which was suppressed by the Pennsylvania state militia after the strikers confronted and defeated several barge loads of private Pinkerton "guards" that Henry Clay Frick tried to bring in to take control of the mill. The event was huge and, ultimately, a death blow to organized labor in the steel industry for the next 35 years. The book definitely takes the side of the strikers, which at the time was also the side that most locals (Homestead is basically a part of Pittsburgh) also took at the time. The book catches all the exciting moments of the confrontations and subsequent trials for treason and so forth, and paints interesting likable pictures of the leaders of the strike, such as Hugh O'Donnell and John McLuckie, who seem to have been, by and large, pretty much regular guys of the time. This is wonderful reading and will surprise in its richness of interesting details about life in the 1890s.

Phoebe Smith has produced a true labour of love in this book, an account of 26 of the 100 bothies in the wild places of Great Britain, which are stone or wood permanent shelters, for the free use of walkers, ramblers and climbers. Eighteen of the bothies featured are in Scotland, four in Northen England (the Lake District x 2, the Pennines, and the Borders) and four in Wales. (2 North, 1 Mid, 1 Brecon Beacons).The bothies featured are of varying shapes and sizes - some are simple small huts with a single room, some have more than one room and basic sleeping platform/fireplaces/kitchen facilities, and a few like Craig in Torridon, a former Youth Hostel are multi-room buildings with good facilities.Alll are maintained by the charity, the Mountain Bothies Association, whose remit is "To maintain simple shelters in remote country for the use and benefit of all who love wild and lonely places.Phoebe Smith gives a history of bothies and the MBA, and a quick guide to bothies in general, before giving an account of each bothy, describing her own encounter with the bothy, including photographs and an OS map reproduction. And the other people and animals you may encounter.This book is about many things. At one level it's a classic guidebook, giving clear routes and facts about these bothies. At another it's a guide around how to use them fairly and well. And some pretty earthy advice around hygiene too.The book goes a long way beyond these basics. It's really about where the bothies are, what kind of people built them, and have stayed there. The descriptions are a celebration of wilderness, and of passing through it, and resting awhile in it. In this book the bothy's the thing, and the fact that there are mountains around them may be incidental.Our bothies are a great British resource, provided freely, on a basis of implicit hospitality and trust. This book celebrates them well, and is a likeable introduction to them. I can welcome this book, and recommend it to fellow explorers.For US readers this book is very British, and celebrates a very British way of enjoying the wilderness in the UK- there's more space here than you may imagine. About the Author Elinor Glyn was a British writer best known for pioneering mass-market women s erotic fiction and popularizing the concept of the It Girl, which had a profound influence on 20th century popular culture and the careers of Gloria Swanson and Clara Bow. Witty look into Edwardian High Society By Girl Friday Reader When The Visits of Elizabeth was published, it created a scandal due to Glyn's description of the eponymous heroine looking adorable in her nightgown. The outrage made this book a scandale de success and put Elinor Glyn on the path to smashing fame with even more "scandalous" books. Viewed through our eyes, this book would seem quaint and cute, more suited to the YA market than the adult fiction market in which it was published. However, this book is best used as a peek into the fast set otherwise known as the "Marlborough House Set" which centered itself on the Prince of Wales (Edward VII), amusement, money, and sex. The naive and charming narrator gets herself into social scrapes due to her innocence, and they are actually funny over a hundred years later because you know what Elizabeth doesn't know--and perhaps that was the appeal for the more knowing Edwardian readers. Glyn's book is a bit of a satire, but a romantic one, and Elizabeth gets her happily-ever-after, but not before making every handsome gentleman fall deeply in love with her. The popular fiction of the 19th and 20th centuries are sadly neglected, and cause most to assume anything written in the past is as difficult (to them) and/or as boring to read as books touted as "classics"--though I've enjoyed many of them as much as I have popular fiction. I think it's time for a revival of "pulp" or "trashy" fiction as they are usually more honest and more revealing of the people of their day. The Visits of Elizabeth is available for free in many places, though I'm sure Dodo Press created a lovely edition.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A quick little read By A. Woman The book is written in the form of letters sent by a 17-year-old English girl to her invalid mother. Elizabeth is traveling around, visiting family and friends and dutifully reports to her mother all the people she meets and things she experiences. The story sort of puts me in mind of a Jane Austen type of book, updated to the turn of the 20th century. Only Elizabeth has a lot more spunk. (When one overzealous swain declares his adoration, she threatens to knock him over the head with a pool cue. You won't find THAT in an Austen novel.) Elizabeth is innocent and naive -- sometimes veering off into downright stupid -- but altogether she's an alright gal. And like all Jane Austen-type heroines, Elizabeth gets a rich and titled man in the end. The story was published in 1901 and gives an interesting view of mores back then. For instance, Elizabeth thinks it highly rude to use anyone's first name. But that's nothing compared to the shock and horror her French godmother experiences when she learns that Elizabeth dares to take a bath in the nude! My complaint about the book, as well as other books written around this time, is that there are long lines of dialogue in French. I suppose the author automatically assumed I the reader would know French. Well I don't! While I fumble around with my French/English dictionary, I'm left clueless as to what is being said and what is going on. And a great chunk of the book takes place in France. Why couldn't the publishers provide footnote translations for mono-lingual people like me? Overall, the book is an easy read (except for the French) and Elizabeth is a likeable character.

By Amazon Customer Elinor Glyn is at her best when she's being funny, as in the Elizabeth book, and not trying to be all romantic and profound, as in Three Weeks. Elizabeth is an English girl from a very aristocratic family, but she's spent most of her life in retirement with her widowed mother. This book contains the letters she writes home while visiting all her relatives in England and France. Basically, everyone is leading wonderfully scandalous lives, and Elizabeth sees and reports everything without really understanding what's going on. Also, several people fall in love with her. It's pretty great.

Now I know that it's a big deal to the people who invest in champion pigeon bloodlines and enter their birds in competitive races that have purses as big as a million dollars or more. Author David Samuels traveled to South Africa to follow the action in the South African Million Dollar Pigeon Race. In a grueling drive from the pigeons' home loft in Johannesburg to Douglas, South Africa in the Northern Cape province, Samuels described the land, its people, and some modern history of South Africa. Then on race day, the pigeons were released, and the vehicles rushed back to the loft to see which pigeons were the first to complete their 325-mile journey across the South African veldt.The book delved a bit into the science of how pigeons return home. Surprisingly, despite decades of research, no one knows exactly how pigeons can find their way home even from hundreds of miles away. The book's title comes from the "arc of the sun" theory that was proposed in the 1950s. Since then, other theories have been proposed, including magnetic cue theory, the olfactory theory, and even a steeple-chasing theory. But regardless of how pigeons find their way home, they've been used by humans for hundreds, if not thousands of years for carrying communications, especially valuable in wartime.It's a very interesting look at a sport that's virtually unknown to most people.I read the book for free with my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

By Andrew McMillen David Samuels is one of my favourite feature writers, so I was always going to enjoy this story, which is about the esoteric hobby of pigeon racing. Samuels attends the world's most lucrative pigeon race in South Africa and embeds himself deep in the culture of pigeon fanciers, who are obsessed with discussing bloodlines and wing feathers. Despite their best efforts at training the birds, however, so much of this sport is left to chance, as evidenced by the hilarious conclusion to the race, where the two leading birds take 14 minutes to walk a short distance into a trap in order to determined the winner. This piece is all about the concept of home, to which Samuels adds an emotional dimension when discussing his own upbringing and being homesick while writing this piece, separated from his son. There's so much to love about this piece. Samuels is simply one of the best writers working today.

A fascinating look at the world of pigeon racing By Tungsten Hippo This short ebook is primarily about pigeon racing, and the South African Million Dollar Pigeon Race. On that topic, it succeeds brilliantly. Samuels takes you inside the world of pigeon racing and lets you see its appeal as well as its quirks. Occasionally, he tries to connect to a larger theme of "finding home," and in that regard this book felt under-developed, like he had an idea for a wider connection but couldn't quite make the connection stick. This does not detract from the main story in the book, though, and it is still well worth your time.

Worth its price :) By Parsifal Here are several stories that tell how loving and trusting women can benefit the people they love, either poking their noses into other's lives or standing by their side when they do silly things. "Silver pitchers" is just the first of the stories. I found it a little boring, more moral tales than "Little women", although very customary in Louisa May Alcott's time, in my opinion. Tecnically, it has a good layout and editing. Worth its price :)

‘Letters from Cairo’ chronicles my life in Cairo while on an overseas posting with my husband between 2002 and 2004. The book is interspersed with photographs and letters that I wrote to family and friends back home in Scotland. The letters recount my amusement, delight and frustration with the daily difficulties of living in a third world city. Sometimes they echo an event written in the main text but that illustrates how differently I projected my experience in the letters. The main text of the book paints the more complete picture and is a darker, more poignant tale. We lived in Cairo in a time of increasing local hostility to Westerners, the onset and continuation of the Iraq War. The book is a true reflection of how living in Cairo affected me and to some extent all other expatriates. Some of the letters will make the reader laugh out loud. It might encourage people to have a real adventure and live in a different place, in a different world… or not. Perhaps all would-be expatriates should read the book first. It also gives an insight into why the Arab Spring happened and the continuing problems in the Middle-East and North Africa. I hope it will allow the readers some compassion for how difficult life can be in an unstable and poor country for indigenous and visiting residents. I have related a little of my unusual personal background which may explain why I had such a unique perspective of living in Egypt. My Irish mother immigrated to the US in the early 1950s and married my father, a Hispanic American, in 1959. He had a troubled past and possibly had an undiagnosed mental illness. I was born prematurely in San Francisco and when I was a toddler we went on a trip to Europe ending up at my maternal Grandmother’s house in Scotland. My father flew off to the States saying he would send tickets and I am still waiting. My mother was a loving single mother who was devastated by her failed marriage. She, too, had an underlying mental illness and had a severe mental breakdown in the 1970s. Treatment was less sophisticated with numerous rounds of electric shock therapy and ineffective medication. Subsequently, she deteriorated into a haze of alcoholism making my teenage life very unhappy and difficult. I married at 21 to my wonderful husband but perhaps might have waited a little longer had life not seemed so hopeless. My husband and I travelled extensively while posted in Egypt - Malaysia, Dubai, Europe and USA and this is narrated in the book. I didn’t usually travel with my husband when we lived in Scotland but I was unable to stay by myself in Cairo so every cloud has a silver lining. The Epilog, which is my final letter, is hilarious yet distressing and somehow encapsulates the intense flavour of our time spent in Egypt. In the title I write, ‘This is a memoir not a travelogue’, and as you read the book you will see that Cairo is just the backdrop to my deteriorating mental health. The stressful conditions of living there exacerbated my existing condition and it is miraculous that I managed to cope with living there, albeit with fantastic medical help. I was surprised at the high quality of medical care in some respects, not in others. My struggle might give readers, with their own problems, hope that almost any situation can be manageable and perhaps feel blessed that they don’t live in such an environment. Much of the book describes our relationship with the various feral street animals that entered our lives. It both grounded and stressed me looking after so many animals in need but we loved them so much that we took three street cats back to America. Astonishingly, given their poor early start in life they are all still alive aged between 12 and 13. We adore them and they have cost many thousands of dollars to both transport and get specialist help for. Achingly honest By RoyMcC The author is a natural storyteller and in Letters from Cairo she tells of her two-year stay in the capital of Egypt, occasioned by her husband’s job transfer. It is a very personal account and, by her own admission, doesn’t purport to being a travelogue or guide. Those can be found in profusion elsewhere.From first impressions upon arrival, to house hunting and finding a villa, daily life and work, social events and finally return to the United States, all are written with clarity, enthusiasm and humour. Without being over-wordy and descriptive the author constantly paints pictures of the environs, the characters she encounters, the alien culture and the difficulties associated with it.But more than this, it is an achingly honest account of how she has to cope with her inherited mental illness in this new life. She volunteers for working with sick animals and other charities but this in itself brings more stress. She and her husband retreat at times to the ubiquitous bolthole of an expatriates’ bar which offers the illusion of escape from reality, at least for a while.But there is always humour, a sense of the ridiculous which makes the story so readable. Neither is there any subject which the author is shy about talking about, and at no time does she try to gloss her weaknesses or to put herself in a better light.The reader of this book will be entertained certainly but will also learn more than they possibly expected from some excellent storytelling.

Travelogue of self-discovery By Rodney Rhodes Having never visited Cairo (admittedly, I’ve never wanted to), I found this book a fascinating doorway into a world completely different from mine, and — fact or fiction — that’s one of the best things a book can do.It also provides a revealing look behind the eyes of someone who has struggled with mental illness. From her cheerful appearance and kind demeanor, you’d never know it. (Full disclosure: the author and her husband have been my next-door neighbors for over 7 years.)The chapters move along quickly, unspooling humorous anecdotes of adventure, journeys through new cultures and plenty of warm, fuzzy animal tales. Despite the subtitle, this truly is a travelogue of self-discovery.

Good but lacking any depth By Suzanne in The Woods As I also lived for two years in Cairo, though, 20 years before this author, I was eager to read about her experiences. We lived in the same suburb of the city but her experience and mine were very different. I have not finished it yet but am getting tired of reading about her mental state. I was hoping to read more about her exploration of Cairo, the people she met, and daily life. However, it is HER experience and not mine, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I should have written my own "memoir".
