I loved the brief history of the city that the author provided in the beginning and then about each site throughout the book - allowed me to evaluate ahead of time whether or not the site would peak my interest or not. I also appreciated the tip about finding a place to park all day if you're traveling to Rome by car, and then using public transportation to maximize your time. And I had no idea that you can't eat at tourist sites anymore - a good heads up! Definitely a helpful guide book if you're heading to Rome.

I will be going to Rome this Spring, and I know that I will be able to get around, and hit the hot spots with confidence! A travel guide that is easy to use, with a lot of information.

Excerpt from Through Norway With a Knapsack: A New and Improved Edition; With Notes on Recent Changes Suggested by a Recent RevisitI have been frequently urged by friends and Norwegian tourists to prepare a new edition of this book which has been out of print for some years, but have postponed doing so until I could revisit the country and supplement the account of my first journey with such information as is necessary to fairly represent the changes that have been wrought in Norway and Norwegian travelling since 1856.An excellent opportunity of doing this was lately afforded. Some young ladies to whom I had been lecturing on Physical Geography desired to extend their studies by taking - in company with their governess - a holiday object-lesson on Arctic and Scandinavian phenomena. They invited me to continue my teaching in this pleasant form by becoming their pilot through the country I had previously visited and described.I accepted this grave responsibility, and thus travelled again "through Norway," but this time with six ladies and more than one knapsack.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. MY little two-story house by the Ohashigawa, although dainty as a bird- cage, proved much too small for comfort at the approach of the hot season—the rooms being scarcely higher than steamship cabins, and so narrow that an ordinary mosquito-net could not be suspended in them. I was sorry to lose the beautiful lake view, but I found it necessary to remove to the northern quarter of the city, into a very quiet Street behind the mouldering castle. My new home is a katchiu-yashiki, the ancient residence of some samurai of high rank. It is shut off from the street, or rather roadway, skirting the castle moat by a long, high wall coped with tiles.

This is one of the many books on Japan that I have read that I used to improve my experience in Japan. In and by itself, it is lacking. Combining the information in this eBook with all of the other books on Japan that I found at Amazon that I could put into my Kindle's virtual library for free made it a worthwhile addition.I would recommend the entire collection; and, maybe there are others that I have missed. Get them especially if you are interested in Japan and the Japanese culture whether a visit is planned or just curiosity!

Hearn understood Japan like few other Westerners By jeff171 Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan by Hearn is a fascinating book if you are interested in Japan and its very unique culture, a riddle wrapped within an enigma! Hearn, after spending many years in that very special country is able to understand the culture and its people like no one else before or since. And finally he is able to write about Japan so those who do not know the country understand it better after reading his very enjoyable books.

By tachi1 This is a charming and entertaining eye witness snapshot of a particular time and place in Cuban history. It is written by an observant English artist who, with an artist's eye and typically dry English wit, observes Cuban customs in Santiago while it was still under oppressive Spanish rule.As a Cuban-American, I particularly enjoyed reading how typical and unique Cuban foibles, faults, virtues, customs, and character traits look to a foreigner. It was fascinating to see how and why many of the traditions that were handed down to me by my grandparents got started or for how long they've existed. It was disturbing to see eyewitness accounts of slavery and discrimination. These incidents are told from his point of view and from the points of view of various levels of a society which was increasingly condemning of the practice. It was reassuring to know that social consciousness and common decency have always existed (as have their opposites).Very little escapes his notice and everything is recorded in a matter-of-fact way without giving personal opinions on the subject or event. It is more a report than an editorial. Although some historical events were witnessed, the majority of the book pertains to social matters and customs which are observed with wonder, curiosity, respect, and an obvious and growing affection for the country and the people he met there.I found it a pleasure from start to finish.

Plus ca change plus c'est la meme chose By Ricardo Vacilon Cuban society has changed, but not enough to make it unrecognizable to someone like Walter Goodman who traveled there in the late 1860s. One could still travel to Cuba today and have a Goodmanian experience, if one were so inclined. Goodman, who considered himself an artist, missed his calling as a travel writer.

In "The New Revelation" the first dawn of the coming change has been described. In "The Vital Message" the sun has risen higher, and one sees more clearly and broadly what our new relations with the Unseen may be. As I look into the future of the human race I am reminded of how once, from amid the bleak chaos of rock and snow at the head of an Alpine pass, I looked down upon the far stretching view of Lombardy, shimmering in the sunshine and extending in one splendid panorama of blue lakes and green rolling hills until it melted into the golden haze which draped the far horizon.

About the Author Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859. Sent off to boarding school, he cut his teeth as a story-teller amusing his schoolmates with tales and writing letters home to his mother. He practiced medicine and, in 1900, volunteered as a medic in Africa during the Boer War – he was later knighted for his service. Doyle lost a son, two brothers in law, and two nephews to the Great War. He is remembered for the Sherlock Holmes stories and his novel The Lost World.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Arthur Conan Doyle and Spirituality By Dave Nelson This past week I finished reading 1500 pages of an annotated version of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock was born in 1854 and ACD in 1859. Much to my surprise it was written that the Sherlock Holmes stories were mainly created to pay the bills for the aspiring doctor ACD. His real interest was on spiritualism. From a materialist background his original impulse was that psychic phenomena was bogus until he saw the names of some prominent scientists who believe in spiritualism. Thus began a search for his own truth. He did a 180 degrees turn and later believed that we are a Soul in a physical body. His original search is written in a small book called "The New Revelation". His conclusion is written in this book. The dogma of science and religion is opposed to spirituality. Science has led to our many materialistic wonders and people in droves are turning away from the contradictory and simplistic answers of religion. It is a tough job to convince people embedded in our present scientific way of looking at things to look at the evidence postulating we are a Soul in a body and to bring people back from their turned off views of religion. ACD is very convincing in his presentations. A must read for anyone interested in what happens when our body dies and what happens to our Soul. And its only 73 pages long.

For example, it may take you through the narrow roads of a town rather than around the periphery (though sometimes that can lead to wonderful discoveries). This map, like all Michelin maps of areas in France, is extremely detailed and helpful. It is very large (which can be awkward), but, overall, lots of fun to work with.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Watkin Tench By Maxwell H. Trist The book is an actual account of from someone who arrived with the first fleet to Australia. Unlike many accounts written since this is an unbiased account of the settlement from a very talented young officer who recounts what he saw and lived through. A must for any Australian interested in where we came from. Excellent book written in the language of the time. Read also William Buckleys account of the first settlement in Victoria and his 32 years with the aborigines.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Watkin Tench's Narrative By David Taylor Absolutely authentic, very interesting, very revealing of hardships everyone had to endure, but very very dry; - a slim volume, it took me a month to get through.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Eyewitness to a historic event By RW Well-written, but of course the author's perspective is limited to his to his role in regulating the colony. He is not interested in or much aware of the relationships among different convicts. However he gives fascinating details about the colonists' relations with the Aborigines, such as the strategy for gaining interpreters: kidnap an Aborigine, imprison him until he learns English, then bribe/pay him with European goods to work as an interpreter!!!

From Mark Twain: "My book is intended mainly for the entertainment of young boys and girls. I hope it will not be shunned by men and women on that account, for part of my plan has been to remind adults of what they once were themselves, and of how they felt and thought and talked, and what queer enterprises they sometimes engaged in."

Frank This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire. This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain. Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

Davis The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: Unabridged and IllustratedThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer that I bought from amazon.com is a paperback Piccadilly Classics (Unabridged and Illustrated) edition, written by Mark Twain (Samuel Langborne Clemens) and illustrated by T. Williams, and published by Piccadilly Books, Ltd. copyright 2010.I am VERY pleased with this edition's keeping to the Mark Twain's original manuscript and the use of (from my understanding...and by the looks of it) wonderfully-used original illustrations. I mean, really, the size of the book, typeface and insertion of the illustrations are artfully done and flow very nicely. The thing that makes me sick about this book, is that it is less than 1-month old and falling apart DURING my first reading of it. Such a fun, beautiful and timeless book deserves to be printed accordingly. A classic deserves a matching binding and cover quality that will withstand numerous generations of readers effortlessly.Specific problems I have had with my copy include: (1) The pages are bound together unevenly. I had a mind just to send the book back to amazon when I saw this flaw, because I knew they would right the problem immediately. My kids saw some of the illustrations and cover, however, and were so ready for me to read it NOW, that I kept it and decided it would just be an imperfect addition to our library. But more imperfections promptly presented themselves. (2) Because of the uneven binding job, the cover tore at the bottom where there are no pages to hold it up (the unevenly bound pages "slant" to full starting at the front cover back). (3) The cheaply-laminated cover has ALREADY started curling apart at both corners (front and back), and in the middle (front and back), where I hold the book to read it.This edition was unfortunately not available in hardcover. I would LOVE a hardcover, quality copy of this specific edition!

41 of 45 people found the following review helpful. Censorship an Mark Twain By Susan Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn certainly rank among the very finest fiction in the American literary canon. Only fools would suggest otherwise. Unfortunately, other fools have censored both books. This is an obscenity. Do these morons actually think that they need to protect the reading public from ideas that were the cultural norm 175 years ago? What unmitigated, insufferable, ignominious gall. Thankfully, Amazon can still provide us with the original versions of these brilliant books. The suggestion that reading Twain in his original prose somehow endangers the public good is both specious and ridiculous. So, then, if we read Lolita will we become pedophiles? If we read Pound will we become fascists? If we read Portnoy's Complaint will we masturbate constantly? The exquisite sensitivity of some groups within our society says more about their determined unwillingness to embrace the freedom and democracy they enjoy than anything else. To hell with them. Buy these wonderful books and read them guilt-free.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Thanksgiving By Juanita Bradstreet This book was an enjoyable because it was written as an old-fashion Thanksgiving story. It made me think back to my childhood days when the entire family (five generations) got together and spent time rehashing memories and events that happened throughout the year. Some family members got along while other’s bickered and gave the evil eye but it was a lovely holiday to be together and fill up on turkey and the fixings. To be honest and direct the holidays are too commercial now. So reading about the Peabody’s family traditional Thanksgiving was wonderful. In the book the Peabody family made a three day event out of the holiday. Two days before Thanksgiving family members started arriving and conversing on which bedrooms were for who and who had to share a room and finally settled on where all the children were going to sleep. The home was a mansion so there was plenty of room all around. They did have a husband and wife who were of a higher class and they stay at a bed and breakfast place. The home belongs to the eldest member Mr. Peabody who was around ninety-five. There were many members to this family that I couldn’t even start naming them. The day before Thanksgiving was the day they choose their turkey, killed it, plucked the feathers, and got it ready for women who were doing the cooking. There was one grandchild who cried about the turkey because he was the one that feed the animals and they were all pets to him. That day some of the women carried on in the kitchen chatting away about their children while the men spent time talking in the living room or outside doing what men usually do. As the evening went on the women and men mingled and a subject came up about two family members who were not there. They were sort of the black sheep of the family and left the area years before. One was Mr. Peabody’s brother and the other was a grandson. Every year some of them would assume they would come back and walk through the door….On Thanksgiving Day almost all of them went to church riding in their horse drawn carriages and wagons. Once that was over they went home and opened the main dining room, used only on occasions like this, and placed enough seats around the table and soon started setting the table and brought out an aroma of different foods. As they seated everyone was excited to see the main platter come out with a huge browned turkey to complete the décor… The Peabody family had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I wished I was there…

Old plot with fantastic new twists By Larry, true dedicated reader The Mynn's Mystery George Manville Fenn(The book is listed as a paperback; but I read the kindle edition)I truly enjoyed reading this novel. This is the first book by Mr Fenn that I have read. I note that Amazon has quite a list of novels by this author. Most likely I will be reading them all.Another delightful book written at the turn of the century (19th to 20th). Mynn is an Old English manor house owned by an old very rich "uncle", who is dying. Our heroin, his "niece", lives in the home. The dastardly villain is attempting to have our heroin marry him, thinking she will inherit all the money (but will she ????) The uncle sends for our hero, who has been living in America for a number of years. But could our hero actually be a villain more dastardly than the previously mentioned villain ??? As you might suppose, there are a bunch of twists in the plot - some of which I haven't mentioned.I highly recommend reading this novel. If you do read it, please write a review to let me know what you think of it.

For sixteen days the armies had grappled—a grueling horror-show of nonstop battle, march, and maneuver that stretched through May of 1864. Federal commander Ulysses S. Grant had resolved to destroy his Confederate adversaries through attrition if by no other means. He would just keep at them until he used them up.Meanwhile, Grant’s Confederate counterpart, Robert E. Lee, looked for an opportunity to regain the offensive initiative. “We must strike them a blow,” he told his lieutenants. The toll on both armies was staggering. But Grant’s war of attrition began to take its toll in a more insidious way. Both army commanders—operating on the dark edge of exhaustion, fighting off illness, pressure-cooked by stress—began to feel the effects of that continuous, merciless grind in very personal ways. Punch-drunk tired, they began to second-guess themselves, began missing opportunities, began making mistakes. As a result, along the banks of the North Anna River, commanders on both sides brought their armies to the brink of destruction without even knowing it.Picking up the story started in the Emerging Civil War Series book A Season of Slaughter: The Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, historian Chris Mackowski follows the road south to the North Anna River. Strike Them a Blow: Battle Along the North Anna River offers a concise, engaging account of the mistakes and missed opportunities of the third—and least understood—phase of the Overland Campaign.

Durney Several voids exist if Popular Civil War history, when we skip weeks moving from one event to another. While books do not have the armies magically disappear at Spotsylvania and reappear at Cold Harbor they say little about anything other than marching.Gordon Rhea’s brilliant history of the Overland Campaign introduced the North Ann River to many of us.Here is a more assessable history with all the essential information in a lively enjoyable book. That May, Lee set an army size trap on the North Anna River that would split the Army of the Potomac and isolate the parts. If successful, a substantial part of Grant’s army would be destroyed and the two armies would be about equal in size.Grant fell into the trap, recognized the danger and managed to pull back in time. This is the great “What if” of the Overland Campaign and possibly of the war.Additionally, this is some of Lee’s best work showing his planning skills and his ability to evaluate the other side’s leader. We always get a lot of book for a buck in this series and this book is an exceptional value.First, you will not find this subject covered at this price anywhere else. The author writes well providing both information and entertainment.Hal Jespersen map contribution cannot be overlooked; his maps enhance any book by making the most obscure fields understandable. The good text is further enhanced with period illustrations, current pictures and portraits of the participants.A battlefield tour and a history of the preservation effort to save this battlefield round out this excellent book.

By Steven Peterson This book focuses on one of the lesser known battles during Grant's campaign in 1864. The horrors of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House battles had bloodied both the Union and Confederate forces. After the Spotsylvania battle, Grant began a move around Lee's forces. Momentarily, Lee was baffled by Grant's movement.Grant wished a stand up battle and used Winfield Scott Hancock's II Corps as bait for a trap. Well, it did not work. Finally, Lee understood that Grant had stolen a march on him. The two armies began converging around the North Anna River.Early on, the Confederates were roughly handled by the Army of the Potomac. But one of their engineers saw that the topography allowed a use of force to isolate and potentially devastate the Union forces. Lee was ill and was not himself and the opportunity faded as Grant came to understand the tactical problems of his position.Hence, no major battle occurred here as the two sides continued their movements. But this was an interesting stage in the Overland Campaign and is important to be aware of.

Mackowski Gives Us Another Excellent Work By Matthew Bartlett The Emerging Civil War Series has been a pleasure to read since its inception and now, Chris Mackowski gives us the new installment Strike Them a Blow about the Battle along the North Anna River. While this book it not titled as a sequel, Strike Them a Blow follows the action of A Season of Slaughter which was about the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. The period of May in 1864 for the armies in the eastern theater of the war was grueling and this book adds to the toll which both armies of Lee and Grant took during that infamous month. Chris Mackowski is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Emerging Civil War. He is also the historian-in-reference at Stevenson Ridge which is part of the Spotsylvania battlefield. On top of all his work with the Emerging Civil War, he is a professor of journalism and mass communication at Saint Bonaventure University in western New York. Some of his other works in the Emerging Civil War Series are That Furious Struggle, Simply Murder, and The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson. He has also authored other books outside of the series: Chancellorsville’s Forgotten Front, The Dark, Close Wood and Seizing Destiny: The Army of the Potomac’s Valley Forge and the Civil War Winter that Saved the Union. One of the best things about the Emerging Civil War Series is the way in which they can be used to help tour the battlefield. After the narrative in every chapter, there are touring tips and this is incredibly useful in a battlefield such as along the North Anna River. Not only do the chapters help with the tour by sectionalizing parts of the days from May 21-25, but they also provide photographs of the commanders and the locations themselves with some excellent battle maps. After the guide within the narrative is over, there are a great number of appendices, six to be exact, which explain more about the battle and other aspects of the combat not deeply covered in the narrative. The best part of the narratives written by Mackowski was the humanity which he brought to the commanders, soldiers and the people of the battle. One such occasion was a human interest story about a woman who was so staunch in her opinion of Sherman never taking the field. She claimed that she knew the country better than anyone else and stated that no army could ever take it. Those small bits of humanity is what makes not only this book, but the Emerging Civil War Series quite excellent. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Battle along the North Anna River and anyone who is touring the battlefields of Virginia. This book is essential to understanding what happened there and offers many tips and stops while you tour the field. In the myriad of battle tour guides throughout the Civil War world, Strike Them a Blow will give you the best tour and descriptions about this combat more than any other. Mackowski should be praised for what he has accomplished here.Matthew Bartlett - Gettysburg Chronicle

I know that I will read it at least three times because it is more than an echo of what millions of people are silently SCREAMING each week as they attend the local church hoping to find their "PURPOSE" without lifting a finger after they exit the sanctuary. If you grew up in the Pentacostal Church, Baptist, COGIC or any other denomination that became your life and you feel trapped in a purposeless life, then this book is for you, YES YOU!! this is not really a book....it's a VOICE. After you read it, PAY IT FORWARD....I did. C'mon, don't stare at this review, CLICK ON "BUY" and share it, and if you're open...it will change your life...I'm sure. Thanks Dr. Hole for being a Voice in our generation for change.Faith M.

Volume 5 brings together studies of the political, religious, social and economic history of the whole of Europe and of the Mediterranean world between about 1198 and 1300. Comprehensive coverage of the developments in western Europe is balanced by attention to the east of Europe, including the Byzantine world, and the Islamic lands in Spain, north Africa and the Levant. Thematic articles look at the fine arts, the vernacular, communications and other aspects of a period in which the frontiers of Latin Christendom were expanding vigorously outward. Attention also is paid to the frontier societies that emerged in Spain, the Baltic and the Mediterranean islands.

Gibson This volume, one of seven in the series (though volume four has two parts), contains an abundance of information despite its limited (in terms of chronology) scope. All aspects of the Middle Ages, ranging from political, social, and military, are covered. Excellent source of information and a good place to start when doing any research during this time period.
