3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Watkin Tench By Maxwell H. Trist The book is an actual account of from someone who arrived with the first fleet to Australia. Unlike many accounts written since this is an unbiased account of the settlement from a very talented young officer who recounts what he saw and lived through. A must for any Australian interested in where we came from. Excellent book written in the language of the time. Read also William Buckleys account of the first settlement in Victoria and his 32 years with the aborigines.

He is not interested in or much aware of the relationships among different convicts. However he gives fascinating details about the colonists' relations with the Aborigines, such as the strategy for gaining interpreters: kidnap an Aborigine, imprison him until he learns English, then bribe/pay him with European goods to work as an interpreter!!!
