Inspired by the first cultural expedition into the Western Himalayas by August Hermann Francke in 1909 which resulted in the region's denomination as 'Indian Tibet', Peter van Ham has travelled for years in the long inaccessible Indo-Tibetan border regions after they were opened to the public in the beginning of the 1990's. In secluded and remote high-altitude-valleys of breath-taking grandeur he documented some of the last refuges of Tibetan and early Indian culture and photographed people and the unique testimonies of their art, religion and architecture, culturally influenced by both of the region's great neighbours-India and Tibet. With the aid of rare archival and contemporary textual and visual materials, many seen here for the first time ever, Peter van Ham draws a comprehensive picture of the fascinating history of the exploration of the present Indian border region towards Tibet. Knowledgably he describes the customs of its various inhabitants many of whom still follow their age-old traditions which at present are being stimulated and revived by the many exiled Tibetans that have found a new home in the region, thus designating it as 'Tibetan India.' With a message by the Dalai Lama and a preface by Michel Peissel.

An Enjoyable Read for the Explorers Visiting Western Himalayan Region or Indo-Tibetan Valleys By Dr Anup K Das In book "Indian Tibet Tibetan India: The Cultural Legacy of the Western Himalayas" German author and photographer Peter Van Ham takes an ethnographic journey alongside the Western Himalayas covering a vast range of high-altitude valleys in Indo-Tibetan region covering districts or valleys namely Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahaul, Spiti, Zanskar, Rupshu, Ladakh, Nubra, and Dah-Hanu. The author has been exploring these places for more than two decades. The author's series of discrete journeys took more than twenty years between 1993 and 2014 to discover the picturesque valleys and natural beauties across the Western Himalayan region. Many-a-times, he visited the region for researching on local festivals, cultural traditions, and cultural continuity. Thus, in this book Van Ham elaborates both the intangible and tangible cultural heritage assets available in plenty across the region. Those heritage assets are earnestly protected or preserved by the local Tibetan community. In the process his journeys, the author discovered the communities worshiping Mother Nature, wonderful floras, and faunas in the region. This book contains twelve chapters. I found most of the chapters are very interesting and captivating. The author elaborates the concept of Indian Tibet vis-à-vis Tibetan India in chapter two. He makes a comprehensive analysis of distinctive cultural heritage assets available in different Indo-Tibetan valleys in various named chapters, namely, Shimla and Kinnaur: The Britons and the Fairy Land (chapter four), Spiti: Buddha’s Mountain Dessert (chapter five), Lahaul: Meeting Place of the Sun and Moon (chapter six); Zanskar: Valley of the White Copper (chapter eight); Rupshu: Lakes and Nomads (chapter nine); Ladakh: Little Tibet of Passes (chapter ten); Nubra: Dunes to Central Asia (chapter eleven); and Dah-Hanu: Refuge of the Last Aryans (chapter twelve). Other informative chapters include The Exploration of the Western Himalayas (chapter three), and Western Himalayan Buddhist Art: Influences, Styles, Developments (chapter seven). This book includes a foreword by Michel Peissel and a learned message from the His Holiness Dalai Lama. The book offers a photo-documentation style of presentation with many anecdotes and the author’s insightful observations on Tibetan people, their religious practices and Buddhist art. This book is an enjoyable read for the explorers visiting Western Himalayan region or Indo-Tibetan valleys, and the researchers doing research on the South Asian art, architecture & culture.

By Eunice Lodge I’m going on a business trip to Europe in about a month and I’ve been researching about the countries included in my itinerary. It’s not going to be my first time in Great Britain, but I’ve never gotten to tour around much in my past visits. I want to go to places other than London. This book was good in the sense that it gave information on what to do and where to go in the other cities in Great Britain like Liverpool, Manchester and Cardiff. It was shorter than I expected, but that’s good because it had no nonsense and just got straight to the point. However, I would’ve enjoyed this better if the author included photos of the actual tourist spots. I would’ve liked a preview of where I’m going. I know I can just google but that would’ve been more convenient for me.

By Carlay Adamson This guide covers ten cities in Great Britain, including one in Wales and two in Scotland. I've been to Edinburgh, Glasgow and London and I can say I learned about some new places that I didn't know about before. The guide covers ten different points for each city from shopping, historical sites (castles, cathedrals and more), galleries and museums, to science centers and things to do with the kids. I don't know if these are the top ten but they would definitely fill several days. This would be good as a brief pocket guide for those that don't want to spend a lot of time reading beforehand. It could have used a map or at least a brief description of where in each city the sites are located.

PDF Ebook The Battle of Savate: 32 Battalion's Greatest Operation, by Piet Nortje

On 21 May 1980, under the codename Operation Tiro-Tiro, 32 Battalion attacked and routed a FAPLA brigade at Savate, a small Angolan town 75 kilometres north of the border with South West Africa. Fifteen members of 32 Battalion were killed in the action and many more wounded. It was the highest South African casualty rate in a single skirmish since the start of the Border War. Overall, however, Savate was a significant victory for 32 Battalion. FAPLA suffered heavy casualties and the invaders captured a great many vehicles, weapons, ammunition and other equipment.Operation Tiro-Tiro, or the Battle of Savate as it became known, was the first time the SADF had engaged FAPLA in battle since 1975. And, despite the record number of casualties, it was 32 Battalion’s biggest victory since its formation in March 1976. While the Border War came to an end in 1989 and 32 Battalion was disbanded in March 1993, to this day a remem-brance service and parade is held annually on the Sunday closest to 21 May to commemorate the Battle of Savate and to remember 32 Battalion’s victory and the price they paid. Drawing from official documents in the Department of Defence Documentation Centre that have only recently been declassified and from testimonies of soldiers on both sides, The Battle of Savate is the definitive account of one of the greatest battles of the Border War, describ¬ing in detail the operation, its motivation and planning, its achievements and failures, and vividly recreating the experience of what happened on the ground.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting read but below its potential By FreestyleBookReviews Hint: I bought this book in a bookshop in South Africa; therefore, this is not a verified purchase.1. Approach and structure of the book: the author employs personal accounts and observations with all their subjective perceptions, suggestions and rumors to drive the account of the battle. While this approach reflects the chaos and confusion of the battle, it does not help to understand its course. Alternatively, employing the aforementioned personal accounts and observations to further elaborate on specific situations and to reflect and explain decision marking by 32 BN leadership would have resulted in a more systematic and understandable account of the battle. Colonel Breytenbach’s summary of the battle included in the book provides a far better overview than the book itself.Furthermore, the chaotic and fluid nature of battles such as Savate requires detailed maps (on an hour by hour basis, at best). The book, however, contains only maps covering the theater of war and not a single one depicting the course of the battle.Similarly, organigrams of 32 BN, both of its general structure at the time of the battle of Savate and of the actual assault force, as well as of the chain of command in the SWA theater of war would have improved understanding.2. I do not want to narrate the battle itself, but I want to single out three points which influenced the course of battle significantly. First, the failure of intelligence, with intelligence personnel missing the air defense positions around the airfield. UNITA identified only an understrength battalion (300 soldiers); in reality, an entire FAPLA brigade (over a 1000 soldiers) manned the base. Similarly, UNITA guides employed by the CSI were unfamiliar with the terrain despite claiming otherwise resulting in the recce teams getting dropped off at the wrong point. Secondly, the composition and constitution of the assault force: the assault force comprised a small command element, three rifle companies (A, C and F, totaling 270 soldiers), a mortar platoon and six recce teams. The rifle companies were about 40 percent understrength, with their white NCOs and officers on leave. The vacancies were filled with personnel from other companies as well as former Rhodesian soldiers on orientation training. Some of the mortarmen had been wounded on previous operations and not yet fully recovered, significantly limiting their ability to handle their mortars. As expected, these two points influenced the course of battle significantly. More time would have facilitated better intelligence collection and would have improved unit cohesion. The question remains whether the assault on Savate was so time-critical to justify the shortcomings already identifiable before the operation which caused the highest number of soldiers in killed in 32 BN’s history.Third, and finally: units trained for low-intensity counterguerilla operations, i.e. patrols, raids on enemy supply points, ambushes, sweeps, etc., are neither psychologically nor tactically prepared for conventional high-intensity operations, as demonstrated by the breakdown of A company during the battle. However, whether these failures were followed by appropriate consequences regarding intelligence collection, cooperation with UNITA, planning and training in the aftermath remains unanswered.3. Finally, two questions arose when reading the book: the author mentions the mishandling and murder of several prisoners taking in the battle without commenting on it any further. It would have been interesting whether this was common during the Bush War. Furthermore, by not commenting on the incident any further, does the author tacitly approves this?Secondly, the large majority of 32 BN soldiers were Black Angolans who served for considerable long time, while whiteSouth Africans, both professional soldiers and national servicemen, served only for a short duration. Nevertheless, the vast majority of those commemorating the battle (“Savate Day”) is white. While maybe out of the scope of this book, the reasons for this would be interesting to know.

Age 28 and fed up with the office job he settled for, Paul Barach decided to travel to Japan to follow a vision he had in college: to walk the ancient 750-mile Shikoku pilgrimage trail.

Here are some things he did not decide to do: learn Japanese, do any research, road test his hiking shoes, or check if it's the hottest summer in history.

And he went anyway, hoping to change his life.

Fighting Monks and Burning Mountains is the absurd and dramatic journey of one impulsive American's search for answers on a holy path in an exotic land. Along the pathway connecting 88 Buddhist temples, he'll face arduous mountain climbs, hide from guards in a toilet stall, challenge a priest to a mountaintop karate battle, and other misadventures.

He'll also delve into the fascinating legends of this ancient land, including a dragon-fighting holy man, a berserker warrior-priest, haunted temples, and a vendetta-driven ghost that overthrew a dynasty.

Told with humor and humility, Fighting Monks and Burning Mountains is a funny, engaging memoir about the consequences of impulsive decisions, and the things you can discover while you're looking for something else.

Also, that boars are terrifying in person.

By Billy Anderson I loved it!Author Paul Barach has an amazing command of the English language that fits the wry tone of the book perfectly.I look forward to reading more from him in the future, since according to a google search this is his first novel.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Humorous Enlightenment By Anica I wasn't entirely sure I would like this book when I first picked it up. My genre choices usually lean more towards fantasy/sci fi. After reading it, though, I can say I'm glad I did! Paul Barach does an amazing job of balancing humor and insight--the narrative never feels like it's trying too hard to get a laugh or seem profound. I like that the story is liberally salted with facts about the history and culture of the Shikoku trail; pure subjective narrative would've made the book seem whiny, when instead it reads as a genuinely insightful, broadening experience. If you're a fan of personal growth through grueling experiences (think Cheryl Strayed's "Wild") I recommend this book

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Funny, earnest, insightful, poignant, interesting memoir of a challenging journey By The Enthusiastic Reader For a memoir to be ultimately interesting and satisfying, it's not enough for interesting things to happen to an interesting person; additionally, the book has to actually be written in an interesting, engaging or at least unique way. Fortunately for the reader, "Fighting Monks and Burning Mountains" meets this criteria. This book is voiced by an intriguingly flawed narrator who experiences many compelling "misadventures" along his journey, which he describes in clear, vivid detail. Impressively, Barach seamlessly interweaves interesting historical/cultural anecdotes about the Shikoku pilgrimage and Japanese culture in between his nakedly honest (and often humorous) details about the usually brutal (yet sometimes transcendent) day to day struggles of the 700+ mile Shikoku pilgrimage. While Barach's external struggles and triumphs are memorable and engagingly written (yes, there are actual monk fights), I found his internal journey to be the most compelling and unique aspect of this travel memoir. Barach captures the ambivalence one acutely feels in the midst of what he hopes will be in retrospect a character-building or "life changing" experience. He captures the ping ponging many travelers feel between feeling earnest and eager about "being in the moment" and alternately fighting the urge to rush through the boredom/tedium/difficulty to the next accomplishment/stage. As he puts it, "While fighting to be in the moment, I must also accept that while I’m hot, tired, and enduring another drudging hour of nothing on a concrete ribbon, the moment kinda sucks." Yet he continues to put one foot in front of the other, rouses himself back to attempt meditation when his mind wanders, and in the end honestly and humbly faces the prospect that the journey might afford different answers than those he initially sought/expected.Almost equally impressive is how Barach weaves his witty humor in and out of his depictions of personal challenges and historical details. When describing a fudo, he writes: "He’s armed with a sword to cut through delusion and a lasso to rein in focus. I like these the best, because it’s a demon with fire and a blade. Like chocolate peanut butter ice cream, three things I love separately, together at last." His humorous approach almost always remains in the service of the story itself, by which I mean that Barach fails to fall into the trap many comedians can't resist of crafting a funny sentence/take on a situation just to show how clever they are, without having any overall relevancy or poignancy. Barach displays an earnest enthusiasm for the history and cultural significance of the Shikoku pilgrimage and Japanese culture, while also applying a searingly honest appraisal of the at times absurd minute to minute challenges the journey affords, and the humor often arises from the juxtaposition of these factors. Overall I found this a very satisfying read .

The hamlets of Centereach, Selden, and Lake Grove are steeped in history. Revolutionary War captain Daniel Roe foiled British attacks on Selden, saving lives by evacuating citizens via whaleboat to Connecticut. In 1818, the New Village Congregational Church was built in the small community. Over 200 years later, it still stands as a nationally recognized landmark. Albert Nortons Wheelmens Rest on Bicycle Path refreshed weary cyclists during the cycling craze of the 1890s, when hundreds of miles of dedicated side paths were constructed for enthusiasts. Modern hero Clarence Dare, state district fire ranger, guaranteed safety from the heights of Bald Hills lookout tower during the 1920s and beyond. Brookhaven police officer Alvin Smith patrolled from Smithtown to the Riverhead border to protect his neighbors in the 1930s. Together, the residents of these hamlets built and maintained schools and community organizations that nurtured and supported their vibrant, growing population.

Not only do you get some history on the subject but Bernard also puts to rest some of the conspiracy theories you read about on the internet.I came away more informed and had a few laughs along the way! Pick this one up!

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Just what the doctor ordered By Laughing Raccoon This book was just what the doctor ordered today. To say I've had a bad day is an understatement, but I digress. I love the humorous style the book was written in, to debunk the lunacy. I know a couple of hardcore conspiracy theorists, and I've always suspected they were full-blown nuts. I no longer have to suspect that, now I know it's true. I don't know anything about Masons, but I've always just rolled my eyes when people make all those ludicrous claims. After all, I had an uncle who was a Mason, and he was a wonderful man. I've also always been a big supporter of the Shrine Horse Shows we have here. I know that Shriners are Masons, and know those folks to be decent caring folks, whose only mission is to help kids who are disabled or injured. Satanists, indeed! Once again, this was a funny but informative book. I highly recommend it. One thing though, I never did find that damned owl!

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Ten minutes of reading that brightened up my day.. By Cheryl M-M The authors humour really made me laugh out loud or maybe my sense of humour is just up for a witty remark. Whichever it is I enjoyed reading this short, but self explanatory essay on Freemasonry. It even managed to teach me an odd bit of history or two. If you have a spare ten minutes I recommend you give this a whirl, because I am certainly glad I did as it brightened up my day. I shall also be careful not to impart any secrets held within the sanctum of these pages lest my goldfish be speared by ancient dagger wielding ninjas. You will have to read it to understand the ninja reference.

By HMS Warspite "Anne of the Island" is the third novel of the "Anne of Green Gables" series, and one of the most popular with fans of author Lucy Maud Montgomery. The red-haired orphan Anne Shirley earns a chance to attend Redmond College in Nova Scotia. At eighteen, she has also grown into an attractive young woman, a fact that will be noticed by her male friends and acquaintances. Anne, of course, has her own very strong ideas about romance...Anne will attend Redmond with several friends from Avonlea and Queens Academy, including school chum Gilbert Blythe. Together with three girlfriends, including the charming and contrary "Phil" Gordon, Anne sets up housekeeping in a perfect little cottage on the edge of campus, their home base for studies and an exciting new social whirl. And Avonlea is still be close enough for treasured holiday and vacation visits. The next four years will be challenging for Anne. She will find a connection to her long-dead parents. She will comfort a dying friend, and help a former student adjust to the passing of childhood. And, Anne will be the recipient of a series of marriage proposals, some funny, some hopelessly awkward, and at least two that will challenge Anne's cherished dreams of a romantic knight in shining armor.Montgomery wrings a great deal of drama, comedy and suspense out of Anne's romantic adventures. The big question, of course, is whether Anne will accept one of her suitors, and just who that will be. The suspense is good to the very last drop, and very highly recommended to her fans.

Demosthenes, the son of Demosthenes of Paeania in Attica, a rich and highly respected factory-owner, was born in or about the year 384 B.C. He was early left an orphan; his guardians mismanaged his property for their own advantage; and although, soon after coming of age in 366, he took proceedings against them and was victorious in the law-courts, he appears to have recovered comparatively little from them. In preparing for these proceedings he had the assistance of Isaeus, a teacher and writer of speeches who was remarkable for his knowledge of law, his complete mastery of all the aspects of any case with which he had to do, and his skill in dealing with questions of ownership and inheritance. Demosthenes' speeches against his guardians show plainly the influence of Isaeus, and the teacher may have developed in his pupil the thoroughness and the ingenuity in handling legal arguments which afterwards became characteristic of his work. Apart from this litigation with his guardians, we know little of Demosthenes' youth and early manhood. Various stories have come down to us (for the most part not on the best authority), of his having been inspired to aim at an orator's career by the eloquence and fame of Callistratus; of his having overcome serious physical defects by assiduous practice; of his having failed, nevertheless, owing to imperfections of delivery, in his early appearances before the people, and having been enabled to remedy these by the instruction of the celebrated actor Satyrus; and of his close study of the History of Thucydides. Upon the latter point the evidence of his early style leaves no room for doubt, and the same studies may have contributed to the skill and impressiveness with which, in nearly every oration, he appeals to the events of the past, and sums up the lessons of history. Whether he came personally under the influence either of Plato, the philosopher, or of Isocrates, the greatest rhetorical teacher of his time, and a political pamphleteer of high principles but little practical insight, is much more doubtful. The two men were almost as different in temperament and aims as it was possible to be, but Demosthenes' familiarity with the published speeches of Isocrates, and with the rhetorical principles which Isocrates taught and followed, can scarcely be questioned.
