To be able to know the best that's out there and not have to do the research -- that's a super cool thing! I did have to skip a few sections I wasn't really interested in, but it's great to know more than the average tourist. Miami is a big hub of culture, golfing is great!

Our plane tickets had already been reserved (flying over from Europe in 6 months) and needed to do some background study. I'm a simple man, really. I don't need hundreds of suggestions of where to visit in Miami, but the top 10 is more than fine. Gotta start packing!

About the Author Geboren am 5.12.1825 in Arnstadt/Thüringen; gestorben am 22.6.1887 in Arnstadt. Die Eltern, die alten Kaufmannsfamilien entstammten, gaben Marlitt zu Fürstin Mathilde von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen in musikalische Ausbildung, die sie 1844-46 am Wiener Konservatorium fortsetzte. Sie trat als Opernsängerin in mehreren Städten auf, u.a. in Leipzig und Wien. 1853 mußte sie wegen eines Ohrenleidens die Karriere aufgeben und war danach Gesellschafterin, Vorleserin und Reisebegleiterin der Fürstin. Ab 1863 arbeitete sie als freie Schriftstellerin. Sehr bald war sie auch finanziell erfolgreich; 1871 konnte sie ihre Villa Marlittsheim beziehen. Ihre Popularität trug mit dazu bei, daß sich die Auflagenhöhe der Gartenlaube, in der viele ihrer Erzählungen und Romane erschienen, zwischen 1866 und 1876 verdoppelte. Eine ausführliche Biographie findet sich im Nachwort von denThüringer Erzählungen.

A great summer (or anytime) read By Kristin Baggelaar As a big fan of this golden age of Hollywood classic films and the legends who starred in them, I had eagerly awaited the publication of Stone Wallace's biography of George Raft - and it certainly proved worth the wait. No disappointment with this take on one of the era's heroes, who is largely unknown to younger generations; hopefully Stone's goal of reintroducing Raft and bringing to light his contributions to filmdom will be achieved through this wonderful book. Though widely known for his bad-guy roles, in some of my favorite films - Scarface, Rogue Cop - it was interesting to learn more about other aspects facets of Raft's career. The Bugsy Siegel connection was very interesting as it touched on information related to my own research; and, I particularly enjoyed reading about the role that Humphrey Bogart played in George Raft's life. I liked the format of the the book, i.e. using a lot of photographs and interspersing them through the text. In particular I enjoyed seeing images of two former Copa Girls (Lucille Casey and Edna Ryan) - a subject near and dear to me - included in this fine book. A wonderful, fun read - highly recommended.

By Johnnery In his stunning and beautifully packaged new book on the slam-bang and rugged life and career of movie tough guy George Raft, author Stone Wallace proves once and for all that he is at the absolute forefront of contemporary celebrity biographers. A veteran author of over a dozen fictional and non-fictional books, including his recent crime novel, The Shaft, Stone hits the ball out of the park completely with this latest project, bringing out all the many nuances, vulnerabilities and strengths, and most of all, HUMANITY, in Raft's character that the actor himself could have ever hoped to reveal.A complex and deeply insecure man whose loyal and overly generous nature often backfired on him, George Raft was as memorable a film personality as they come and more than deserves his decades-long status as a true celluloid icon. And yet it is discovery of the man's heart, and who he was as a friend to the many colorful people in his orbit, that is most appealing to me, and the part of Stone's research that impresses me the most. Lovins BearManor Media presents "GEORGE RAFT:THE MAN WHO WOULD BE BOGART" (Paperback), by Stone Wallace (Author) with a foreword by Alan K. Rode.Before I start reviewing this book, must make mention of the beautiful graphic cover featuring Mr. Raft in a tailor-made pin-striped suit, which depicts the man we all loved to watch on the big screen. The author Wallace states, perhaps more than any other star of his era, George strongly was identified with his film roles. It was important to him that he be liked as much on the camera as off. To that end, when he reached the point of stardom where he could start being selective about the material he'd chose, he often exercised a judgment that was ... eccentric, to say the least. Rejecting "The Maltese Falcon" and "High Sierra", Raft's career would never recover from these mistakes.Loaded with wonderful studio stills and unique photographs, which is a plus for my taste.Interesting section on Betty Grable Hollywood's soon to be World War 2 "Pin Up Girl", she was 24 years old and beautiful, just divorced from the child actor Jackie Coogan. Both her and George had genuine liking in the same interests, she was fun and outgoing and enjoyed going to Sunday ballgames. Loved the nightclubs where neither of them drank (except fruits juice drinks or ice cream sodas) but would dance for hours. One of the reasons Betty fell so hard for George was his constant thoughtfulness and consideration. But there would never be wedding bells for them.Mr. Wallace has fitted very nicely in his book, the situation with George's career decisions. But for better or worse, like many of the characters he created on film he played the game his way. Set during the reign of Louis XI, in the waning Middle Ages, there is intrigue, treachery, action, and not a little humor. In his cups, our hero gets himself in trouble by airing his unfavorable opinions of the king rather too freely. King Louis happens to be in the tavern in disguise, and Villon is arrested and made Grand Constable of France for a week (to see if he can't do a better job running the kingdom), after which time he is to be executed -- unless a certain seeming-impossibility is achieved.Justin Huntly McCarthy's writing is luminous: lucid yet colorful and elegant -- perfect for the story. McCarthy also wrote the delightful "The O'Flynn". Both books were made into fine films -- "If I Were King" with Ronald Colman, and "The Fighting O'Flynn" with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. -- but the books are even better, as books so often are.The Kindle edition is bare-bones (no chapter links), but as this is a free book, offering any complaints would be churlish.Do yourself a favor and read this wonderful story!

His recent and current work includes research on statistical methods (for example, work on three-dimensional statistical graphs) and on Canadian society (for example, a study of political polls in the 1995 Quebec sovereignty referendum). He is author of many articles, in such journals as "Sociological Methodology", "The Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics", "The Journal of the American Statistical Association", "The Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology", and "The Canadian Journal of Sociology". He has written several other books, including "Applied Regression Analysis, Linear Models, and Related Methods "(Sage, 1997), "Nonparametric Simple Regression" (Sage, 2000), and "Multiple and Generalized Nonparametric Regression" (Sage, 2000).

I highly recommend any of John Foxes' books. They are not only entertaining but educational.

Career girl romance By Jaylia Set in the big city, the career girls in Just Around the Corner fall head over heels in love with the right man disguised as the wrong man or the wrong man who becomes the right man, or the wrong man who just stays manipulative or clueless to the end. These short stories by Fannie Hurst have the wit and charm of those old black and white movies with snappy dialog and smart but wide-eyed heroines, and later Hurst did adapt some of her work for the big screen. Published in 1914 most of these stories have a surprise twist at the end that still feels fresh almost a century later. Fannie Hurst lived until 1968 and was an early feminist, believing among other things that women should keep their maiden names, and a promoter of gay rights on her NYC based radio program Showcase.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good for when reading beside the fire By A Customer I found this book on my mother's shelf, and found it interesting. Set at the end of the Civil War, the focus is on a Southern girl called Miss Lou who was orphaned at a young age and raised by her aunt and uncle. At 18, she wishes that her guardians would see she has grown up. When the battles of the War start reaching the plantation, the characters are challenged in ways they could not have predicted. While sometimes hard pressed to understand what the slaves were saying (the author writes in the manner they speak and doesn't use correct spelling), I found them portrayed in a different manner than is in the books written today. They had their superstitions and were limited in their education, but faith, hope and love were certainly their strengths. Miss Lou is wonderful; she, although inexperienced, has the courage and gumption to stand up against injustice, whether against her or others. These qualities earn her the respect of almost everyone around her, espacially a Yankee soldier who befriends her. The only thing truly disappointing about this book was the end. It cuts off to a description of what the end was supposed to be like. I do not know if the author died before he could complete the book or if it was intended to end this way. But if you have an imagination then the characters in the book will come alive and end it for you.

A minor stumbling block was reading the dialect that the slaves used. That being said, the great thing about this book was that there was NO condescension shown toward the slaves by the author or the heroine. The plot centers around the Union Army coming to a plantation in the South, and it was not only tensely exciting, but accurate. The author deserves my belated respect.

Book spoke to me as to how much of a mess politics was a century ago and how things have never really changed in that regard. A good book, but with so many other kindle versions available at a similar price point it's hard for it to stand apart from the crowd.

While I do not agree with London's views, this book is an important political text that should be read by anyone who is a student of political science.

I had mortgages and was bored with my job. And it was stressful. So I quit. I left my safe job and safe country with adventure in my sights. I've trekked in the Himalayas, skied in Zermatt and Stubai and Colorado, swum in the Adriatic, drunk pina coladas in Mauritius, been hugged by kids in Turkey, and I've played cricket with kids in Pakistan. Teaching overseas put me in good locations for sensational holidays that I could afford. "It's just a contract. It doesn't mean a thing." That was the General Manager of the first school in which I taught. "We're all family here," he added. It was a good lesson to learn early on. The tax advantages, the sublime culinary adventures and the adorable kids all come at the cost of union protection, health & safety laws and the ease of my local language. It's not for everyone and so before you make a big mistake - which could be leaving home or staying at home - read my little book. 'Ships are safest in the harbour, but that's not what they are built for.' That's what gave me the courage to leave my safe home and teach in Istanbul. I've lived and worked in Europe and Asia and attended teacher training sessions in Macau, Spain, Dubai, Germany, England, Scotland, Bahrain, Sydney and Czech Republic. I've seen a lot. Eaten a lot. Laughed a lot. Cried a little bit. And learnt a lot. I think I should share a lot of what I've learnt. And that's what this small eBook is - the simple things I've learnt about finding and loving international teaching jobs.

While the conflicts and national aspirations in British Mandatory Palestine in particular and the Middle East in general were evident before the outbreak of the Second World War, the war itself accelerated and enhanced national expectations and presented continuing tactical and strategic dilemmas to British, Arab, and Jewish leaders. British strategic policy during the war failed to provide answers to the political issues of the growing national demands in Palestine, and led to severe distrust of British policy among Arabs and Jews, as the two communities were framing mostly opposing reactions to wartime developments, and to conflicting expectations and policies toward postwar solutions for Palestine. The aim of this work is to analyze the continual development of strategic plans and political dilemmas that arose during the war period, which led to the subsequent postwar circumstance where U.S. and Soviet involvement impacted on the strategic thinking of all involved parties, notwithstanding the British military victory. Analysis includes the prewar British strategic situation in Palestine, and the war events in Palestine and its Middle East neighbor countries. At the heart of the discussion lies British interests and policies framed toward Jews and Arabs; analysis of the two communities’ conflicting interests and policies; and the resultant sea-change in the establishment of the Jewish state, which brought in its wake the emergence of a new Middle East.

By Jonathan Baum British Mandatory Palestine was both an area of prime strategic importance and a fearful imperial headache for the British in the Second World War. As both an outpost and base for the Empire forces fighting in the Mediterranean and North Africa, it played a critical role, but with its mixed and hostile population of Arabs and Jews, both expecting something like sole ownership after the war, and with only the Zionist Yishuv actively helping the Allied cause during the war, the British political and military leaderships were justifiably worried about what they could expect in Palestine once the war would stop; then the local fighting would begin. The Jews in Palestine were naturally concerned about what to do to help their fellow Jews suffering horribly under the Nazi regime, while the British were fixated on maintaining a very low number of refugees allowed into the country so as not to upset the Arabs. Early in the war, the country was under threat of Axis invasion, and the British had to develop plans to counter that possibility. There was also some cooperation between the British and the Yishuv on military matters. Professor Sharfman covers this complicated ground in a workmanlike fashion. An interesting survey of a not-often-studied era of the history of the Land of Israel.

Nofi A summary of the review by Mark Blackman on StrategyPage.Com:'Britain’s wartime Palestinian policy was rooted in the Arab revolt of 1936-39, as dominated by and dictated by the British “White Paper on Palestine” of 1939. This marked a de facto retreat from the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which had promised a Jewish National Home in Palestine, as a move to placate the Arabs, both in Palestine and in surrounding countries which the coming war was expected to affect. The White Paper severely restricted Jewish immigration, a position to which the British firmly clung, even after news of the Holocaust had become public and Jewish refugees sought haven. The deaths of hundreds of Jews on flimsy ships and tens of thousands more in Europe who had been blocked from immigration to Palestine would poison the relationship between Britain and the Yishuv; the Palestinian Jewish community; Britain would no longer be seen not as a protector, but as a jailer.Despite their frustration with British policies, the Yishuv heartily contributed to the war effort, with thousands joining the British Army and Free French and other forces. Even when relations had deteriorated, Jewish fighters cooperated in clandestine operations with the British. Churchill would describe the Palestinian Jews as “our only trustworthy friends in that country.”'Postwar, however, Great Britain would feel no great obligations to the Yishuv. The goals of the British Empire and the Zionists were irreconcilable. British oil and imperial interests centered on the Arab bloc, while the Zionist objective was a democratic, independent Jewish state in Palestine in control of its own immigration policies. Kindle Review: Exploratory Schooner-Yacht Adventure: 4 Young Men Explore Northward to Labrador By MainelyClassics I originally found an antique copy of this book, "Left on Labrador or, The cruise of the Schooner-yacht 'Curlew.' as Recorded by 'Wash.'" at my parents. I looked and it was a free download for my Kindle.This adventure story is about four young men who spend some money made on a previous venture (detailed in a book not currently available on Kindle called "Camping Out") on an exploratory trip of "self-education" to the Hudson Straits with a hired schooner and crew. "Their voyage was one continued series of startling adventures amid some of the grandest and most terrible scenery the earth affords." It was originally published in 1901 and seemingly set a little earlier than that based on the comments about recently-released slaves.(I left a message for Amazon because there is another similarly-titled book is shown as an identical Kindle edition when in fact it is another story by another author.)I found this story to pretty readable and the action moved along. The whole ending is a little painful for me as the men "set up a military despotism on `Isle Aktok`" subjugating the local natives to support them while they awaited rescue. And yes, they routinely kill every animal they encounter for trophies, like bears, walruses and seals.Please note that this work does reflect the prevailing views of the day about those of other races like the "n" word "darky" and "you black son." An example of a rendering of the African cook's speech: "Why, I was gwine arter dat hawk..." Also, the "Eskimeaux" are described in painful detail as "huskies" and "pristine savagery" who "jabber." You will want to remove one star from my review if this kind of thing will rob your enjoyment of this piece. Also note that I made full use of the Kindle dictionary for this book's numerous archaic expressions and nautical terms like "ratlines."Comments regarding this Kindle edition of March 17, 2006: has linked table of contents ("toc"). Has minor editing issues with a few inappropriate capitalizations. Additionally there were 304 numerical footnotes (grayed out) sprinkled throughout the text that didn't seem to lead anywhere. Also there is extra space between the paragraphs which doesn't create too much extra paging until you are in a section of short dialog which then is very spaced-out and requires a lot of extra paging. Otherwise, this publication had the line-break issues that I have seen in just about every one of these public-domain books. None of these issues affected my enjoyment of this book.I hadn't written very many reviews. However, in reviewing Kindle reading material, I was sorry to see so few reviews of Kindle versions, especially when comparing two or more similar choices. So I am ramping up my reviews while I have the opportunity.
