By Bonnye Reed Fry This is a well researched and fascinating look the the growth of public transportation across the western United States in the mid-19th century, originally published in 1926. I had thought of the pony express, the stage lines, the railroad as slowly evolving improvements as the demand for transportation grew. Not so. The actual growth was driven into an alarmingly fast pace by the gold discovery at Sutter's Mill, California.If you have an interest in the west and the way life was in that time of growth, please read this book. It is eye-opening and you will find a great respect for the trials and tribulations of the pioneers who lead the way for us all.
