While writing my books “the DNA of Salalah-Dhofar” and “Treasure Chest Salalah-Dhofar” about the Sultanate of Oman, a lot of other stories came to me. Mainly stories from women... Perhaps because of the simple fact that I am a woman too. Their thoughts, achievements and dreams became the backbone for “Whispers of Oman”. In the chapter “Reading as a way out”, for example, Amna explains how she dealt with injustice done to her in her youth. The stories of Naifa and Dr. Aida give an insight in the way how the modernization of the country took place in 1970. Raya, who is diagnosed with cancer explains the role of her believe in coping with her disease. There is the statement of Sara, a student who explains why playing theatre is so important for her personal development. With 38 portraits and photos, “Whispers of Oman” in the Arabian Peninsula is an inspirational book, mainly about women who took the opportunities their country offered to develop their skills and peruse the things they were good at. “Whispers of Oman” is a tribute to these women their achievements.

About the Author Writing books is 'my' dream come true. As a Belgium journalist my ideas and writings have given me the opportunity to travel extensively through Europe and China, which has resulted in an international Journalism Award in Italy, three travel books and a book on modern Eastern European art. And last but not least my first novel ' The Earth has Fever.' My writings have also put me on the road to Oman, in Dhofar the Southern region bordering with Yemen, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates. The place has inspired me to write the book ' The DNA of Salalah, Dhofar. A Tourist Guide' and 'Treasure Chest Salalah-Dhofar' (Arabic/English). I developed the blogmagazine https://alarba.wordpress.com. All this guided me to my latest publication 'Whispers of Oman,' mainly women stories..., perhaps because of the fact that I am a woman myself. Still I am working on many other dreams, all to follow on my website https://mariastories.com (a work in progress)......

The charm and beauty of "old" books By Marie Laure I have loved everything in this little masterpiece including the wording, the three little intertwined tales and the plot.It might seem old-timer to be thrilled by the description of love and duty in both parties of a good marriage; then, yes I am an old-timer. How many women of all ages would nowadays make the same declaration without being ashamed?I could compare Matilde Serao to Stendhal written in Italian style.Marie-Laure

Unfortunately these kinds of writing typically concentrate on other subjects and I don't glean much. If your interest is more about people than nature, you will likely think this a 4 star.

The outstanding final volume of acclaimed author Thomas Keneally's major new three-volume history takes up the story of Australia at the end of the Great War and explores its development as a nation during the tumultuous 20th century

Australia emerged from World War I into a decade of profound change, characterized by a revolution in behavior among the young; by the first great age of consumerism; by the new and increasingly sophisticated impact of the movies; by secret right wing armies and the emergence of the Communist Party; and by two less remembered and very interesting PMs, the handsome, somber Stanley Melbourne Bruce of the Melbourne Establishment, and Jim Scullin, unpretentious Labor man of humbler Irish parentage. As in the two previous volumes, Keneally brings history to vivid and pulsating life as he traces the lives and the deeds of Australians known and unknown. As another war grew closer he follows the famous and the infamous through the Great Crash and the rise of Fascism, and explains how Australia was inexorably drawn into a war which led her forces into combat throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Pacific. At home an atmosphere of fear grew with the fall of Singapore and the bombing of Darwin, the Japanese advance and then the American Alliance and the arrival of General MacArthur. Peace brought its own problems with the Depression that left one third of Australians unemployed. Keneally believes too that the 1950s are misunderstood—depicted by some as an age of full employment, by others as the age of suburban spread and boredom under the serene prime ministership of Robert Menzies. But Menzies was complicated and so were the 1950s. The result of masterly writing and exhaustive research is a volume which brings Australia's more recent history to vibrant life.

Anthem is a dystopian fiction novella by Ayn Rand, written in 1937 and first published in 1938 in England. It takes place at some unspecified future date when mankind has entered another dark age. Technological advancement is now carefully planned (when it is allowed to occur at all) and the concept of individuality has been eliminated.

Anthem, by Ayn Rand, Jefferson Publication

From Library Journal The difference between this long-forgotten exercise in paranoia and other futuristic visions of a world controlled by the state, such as Aldous Huxley's or George Orwell's, is the extremist tone of Rand's story. The author lived in a black-and-white world in which things social or communal are evil and things individual and selfish are exalted. This "anthem" culminates in a hymn to the concepts of "I" and "ego," where the rebels are those who resist group action; the oppressors are government officials and others who attempt to provide a safety net for the less fortunate. The production is not improved by the theatricality of narrator Paul Meier, which is reminiscent of a ham Victorian actor intoning an overwrought melodrama. Not recommended.Mark Pumphrey, Polk Cty. P.L., Columbus, NCCopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review A writer of great power. She has a subtle and ingenious mind and the capacity of writing brilliantly, beautifully, bitterly. --The New York Times

From the Back Cover In this classic novel that anticipates her later masterpieces, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand examines a frightening future in which individuals have no name, no independence, and no values.

Equality 7-2521 lives in the Dark Ages of the future, where all decisions are made by committee, all people live in collectives, all traces of individualism have been wiped out. But the spark of individual thought and freedom still burns in Equality 7-2521, a passion which he has been taught to call sinful. In a purely egalitarian world, he dares to stand forth from the herd -- to think and choose for himself, to discover electricity, and to love the woman of his choice. Now he has been marked for death for committing the ultimate sin: in a world where the great "we" reign supreme, he has rediscovered the lost and holy word "I".

This provocative book is an anthem sung in praise of man's ego.

As Ayn Rand herself admitted, it has neither a real plot nor a real climax. Anthem is a poem. Its final two chapters are (according to Rand) the "anthem"--the celebration of the human ego. This is not done in logical terms, but in pure emotional exultation. In my opinion, Rand's writing throughout the book is skilled, passionate and evocative, but in the last two chapters she really shines. For presentations of Rand's philosophy, Objectivism, in logical form, read Atlas Shrugged. For a ruthless, beautiful evocation of the emotional aspect of Rand's philosophy of egoism, read Anthem. If you have socialist leanings, or simply have always assumed the many is more important that the one, the book may disturb you greatly (it did me, when I read it the first time). It will change the way you feel, and Rand's later work will change the way you think.Highly recommended. This book is often misunderstood, but if you read it with the understanding that it is a poem, and not a book, your understanding of it will be enhanced.

Short, Sweet, Thought Provoking Intro to Ayn Rand By khettrich The novel is a tale of a time when the human race has lost all individuality, when people are reduced to numbers and have lost their freedom to make decisions for themselves. Through this novel, written and completed while Ayn Rand was working on Fountainhead, Ayn Rand introduces her philosophy concerning the individual. The novel really got me thinking and I couldn't put it down. At just over a hundred pages, i read it all in one setting, and thought about it the rest of the week. Though the world in Anthem is a very dark and depressed one indeed, it comments nonetheless on more subtle forms of control and losses of our individual freedom in today's world. An excellent read and a great intro to her philosophy. This book led me to purchase Atlas Shrugged, and I recommend these both to all my friends.Amazing and Powerful.

34 of 34 people found the following review helpful. If you want to say that you've read Ayn Rand, this is the place to start By DrDWilliams I heard a lot about Ayn Rand from my elders 20 years ago. At the time, I tried to read Fountainhead, but never could get into it. This past year, I happened to run into Anthem and bought it on my Kindle. This is the book I should have started with all those years ago. Rand's rant against the evils of unmitigated collectivism still plays well for those who live and work in broken communities where the status quo has taken on the character of revelation. Rand inspires rebellion against group think. Add some real critical thinking skills to Rand's simplistic vision and one has the potential for solid citizenship.

When some people taking a look at you while checking out , you might really feel so proud. However, as opposed to other people feels you should instil in on your own that you are reading not due to that reasons. Reading this will certainly offer you greater than people admire. It will guide to recognize greater than the people staring at you. Already, there are several resources to learning, reviewing a book still becomes the first choice as a wonderful means.

A reflection on the lives of people living along the west coast of Co. Mayo, mainly during the 19th century. Few of the Ballycroy diaspora will not be able to recognise an ancestor, or the ancestor of a neighbour, and in some instances learn something they had never heard, or maybe even dreamt of, before.

This novel is a US Civil War (1861–1865) saga of faith, love, perseverance, devotion, and fidelity to family and country. It is the true story of James Harrison Hodam and Sarah Harshbarger, lovers separated by the turmoil of war, and James’ three-year search for his fiancée after the war. The story is historically accurate, based on the diary of my great uncle, James Harrison Hodam, during and after the war; newspaper archives of 1861–1868; and personal interviews. Some of his own thoughtful and prescient words about the future of the United States and changes in our culture are quoted in the appendix. The ideas are as valid today as they were in mid-nineteenth century America. Little in politics, love, and war has changed. I begin this novel at the Battle of Gettysburg, then follow James and his two Confederate comrades, Amos Feather, a Shawnee Indian, and Jelly Ellison, a Negro, through the war to Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. James returns to Hodamsville, West Virginia, after the war and begins his search for Sarah. That search takes him more than 500 miles and concludes in Rantoul, Illinois, after three years of searching in vain. James encounters many obstacles and challenges, setbacks and problems, in his efforts to reunite with Sarah. His hopes of ever seeing Sarah alive again are secured by a rope of sand.

Mein Kampf

This edition is the only German government funded and recognized version of Adolf Hitler's popular Mein Kampf (popularly known as My Struggle in English). James Murphy was invited by the NAZI Propaganda Ministry to translate the book in English so that the NAZI propaganda and vision can be disseminated in the English speaking countries too. This edition has both the volumes and is the James Murphy's original translation that you are viewing right now!

Mein Kampf was originally published in two volumes. Adolf Hitler started dictating Mein Kampf to Rudolf Hess when he was imprisoned in Festungshaft against the Beer Hall Putsch, a failed attempt of coup. One of the earliest translation was by James Murphy that received official recognition by the Third Reich. Actually James Murphy's translation was officially funded by the NAZI party ruling in Germany in a time/era which they called The Third Reich. However later when James Murphy isolated himself from NAZI ideology and chanted negative remarks and comments that were against the NAZI party and rule he was told by the NAZI Propaganda ministry to leave German soil immediately. He sent his wife later to Germany so that his original notes can be retaken. He completed his translation with the help of these notes.

Initially Hitler was naming his book "Viereinhalb Jahre (des Kampfes) gegen Lüge, Dummheit und Feigheit" or in English "Four and a Half Years (of Struggle) Against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice". However he accepted the suggestion of Mein Kampf by Max Amann who was the publisher of Hitler's book(s). He was so passionate about his thoughts and ideas that he predicted that book will be an instant bestseller and will do for all the expenses of NAZI party in the future.

The book was not an instant success as per the records of sales until the year 1931 up to 1933 when Hitler won Chancellorship in Germany. A surge in the sales could be seen thereafter when Hitler already had started distancing himself from his first literary creation, his autobiography, Mein Kampf. He was so submerged and preoccupied with his new status that he started to call it a mistake to write such book that he called "fantasy behind the bars".

The tax accrued for Mein Kampf was about 405,500 Reichsmark (About $1.5 Million in 2015) at the time he took up Chancellorship of Germany when his tax debts were written off.

By the time he had completed his first year as the chancellor of the Germany Mein Kampf had became an essential component of German social life. People are using the then Legendary book "Mein Kampf" for gifts, homage, education and for whatever, whenever possible. And by the time the WORLD WAR II ended the sales of Mein Kampf in Germany alone was toughing 10 Million mark. The book was running in top selling list for over a decade competing neck to neck and sometimes lagging behind the Bible.

Writing a book to disseminate his ideas concerning Nazism or Fascism had been important for Adolf Hitler until he finally reached his goal of Chancellorship. However, when the first book of two volumes, could not help him much in gaining ground in German politics he wrote his next book that was never published. Later in his last years, when the war was about to end, Adolf Hitler ordered his comrades to put the original manuscript in a locker under a shelter for Air Strikes. This book was an extension of NAZI viewpoints, ideas and propaganda. Hitler used his energy to further improve the NAZI ideology and engineer new components and enhance the former ones.

"[...] A soldier standing near me began to grumble because he had not been able to bring his pet with him. I enquired why he had left it behind since the others had brought theirs away with them, and elicited the information that his pet was "a cow, and therefore somewhat difficult to transport." He seemed rather hurt that I should laugh, and assured me it was "a noble animal, brown with white spots, and had given himself and his comrades two quarts of milk a day." He looked disdainfully at the cock and cat. "They could have left them behind and no one would have pinched them, whereas I know I'll never see 'Sarah' again, she was far too useful." Entering Vitry-le-Francois we had a splendid example of the typical "motto" of the French trooper, "II ne faut pas s'en faire" One of the motor cars had broken down, and the officer-occupants, who were evidently not on an urgent mission, had gone to sleep on the banks by the side of the road whilst the chauffeur was making the necessary repairs. We offered him assistance, but he was progressing quite well alone. Later on[...]".

There are some poems that certainly require you to conform to the country lingo in which they're written. Given the fact that this book was originally published in the late 1800's, it provides a wonderful look into history, poetry as entertainment, and a way of speaking that is not heard much anymore. My very favorite poem is "The Bear Story". It is "written" by a boy named Alex and has so many charming twists, turns and changes of mind mid-stream that it's both engaging and funny. Of course this book contains "Little Orphant Annie", and my other favorite, "The Raggedy Man." If you're a lover of old poetry or fun poetry, this is certainly a book that deserves a spot on your shelf. Enjoy!

This volume contains our favorite Riley poems, and we share them by reading aloud.IU Press did a wonderful job reprinting this book. The artwork and the new typeface are beautiful! I am very glad to have this on our shelf.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A choice collection, highly recommended By Midwest Book Review Even with such a difference in a century this has made with technology, some poems can still resonate strongly. "Riley Child-Rhymes with Hoosier Pictures" is a collection of poems aimed at and on the discussion of children from James Whitcomb Riley, a famed poet of the end of the nineteenth century. Thoughtful and charming after all these years, and accompanied by plenty of nostalgic hand drawn pictures of the era, "Riley Child-Rhymes with Hoosier Pictures" is a choice collection, highly recommended.

When William (Bill) Compton arrived at Hanford, he was issued badge number TNX-35 indicating that he was the 35th person hired by the DuPont Company. Bill, like so many of his colleagues, were proud of the work they performed at the Hanford Engineering Works (HEW) for the Manhattan Project during World War II. The feats they accomplished were amazing. In 1994 Bill Compton began to notice that his colleagues were aging and some had passed on. Their stories and experiences were being lost. To preserve their amazing stories and accomplishments on the Manhattan Project, Bill conducted personal interviews and captured firsthand, their memories on audio tapes that are summarized here in this book. Bill Compton conducted most of the interviews featured in this book and Edgar Robert (Bob) Gilbert provided major support, transcribing all the interviews into readable text and conducting interviews when Bill was not available. Bob made a commitment to Bill prior to Bill’s death, to ensure that all their hard work and the memories of their colleagues would not be forgotten. Without Bill’s passion and Bob’s diligent effort, this book would never have been possible.

The Hanford site was selected as part of the Manhattan project. The book is written through the eyes of the Hanford workers. The book perserves this very important part of the American history while the workers in this time frame are aging.
