Kutinsky Somehow, I'd graduated from college - with a degree in English, no less - and had never had to read a single thing ever written by Charles Dickens. I read quite a bit on my own, but still found David Copperfield to be the height of ambition - my copy was 1001 pages long, and I hadn't ventured into a book over a thousand pages since I'd read The Stand at age 12. I cannot imagine that I am alone in completing my education and sidestepping Dickens altogether, so I think it's important I share my experience. In truth, the only reason I chose David Copperfield over, say, Great Expectations or Hard Times was the passing comment made by Jeff Daniels in The Squid And The Whale - dismissing a Tale of Two Cities as "minor Dickens," saying David Copperfield was "much richer."It is rich. I tend towards modern fiction nowadays, fiction that, unexpectedly, takes you deep inside the heart of its characters sometimes bewildering behavior and humanity. What strikes me about the complex nature of the characters in Copperfield is the way it seems that no effort at all has been used to distinguish each of them, yet there is no doubt as to how vivid they are. Each character speaks in a tone that is a perfect elucidation of who they are - you can hear, just in the dialogue, the calm wisdom of Agnes, the parasitic obsequiousness of Uriah Heep, the punctilious rambling of Micawber, the pleasantries that barely mask the aggression of Miss Dartle, the rigid boredom of the Murdstones, the spoiled impishness when Dora speaks (so precise I heard her voice in cloying and nasal babytalk in my head). It's a delicate balancing act to keep this level of detail so hidden in his work, and it makes the plot machinations speedy and exciting. The varied heights in this book astound - moments of drama, whimsy, intrigue, romance abound, and the book is even prone to its bit of slapstick - midgets falling over into umbrellas, or extreme umbrage taken when donkeys appear on lawns. What I mean is that it's easy to know you "should" read David Copperfield, but as anyone who's ever had a reading assignment knows, that doesn't necessarily make it something you'd want to do. I know, in a way, that David Copperfield is considered a standard - a book Tolstoy and Virginia Woolf, for example, hold as the pinnacle of English fiction - but then again, I slogged my way through supposed classics in school that, over time, have turned out to appear dull and unsurprising. David Copperfield is so underread these days that I had no idea what to expect, no notion of the amazing surprises within, the sublimely addictive cadence of Dickens' prose, the dazzle of his language. Reading it for no particular reason, then, was a triumph all around - a book that doesn't require a degree to "understand," that moves breezily through its pages, and that teaches a thing or two (or twenty) about the rich heights capable in fiction. It's as rich and winning as you've heard and then some.

Barton David Copperfield uses the story of Copperfield's life from birth through middle life to introduce and explore some wonderful personalities. Look more for deep and penetrating character studies than a fast moving plot line. It is not character study alone, however. Again and again, through many characters and many instances, he seems to really explore "the first mistaken impulse of an undisciplined heart", and that "there can be no disparity in marriage like unsuitability of mind and purpose". Look for these themes to come in from the very beginning and continue until they are actually spelled out by one character and contemplated by another. When David is born, his father is already buried in the churchyard nearby. He, his mother, and their servant Pegotty live happily enough as a family until his mother remarries. The new husband does not like frivolity or friendly association with servants but more than that, he does not like David. David is sent off to boarding school and then sent out to work. Barred from his mother's affections by his stepfather, Pegotty becomes a full mother figure and his ties to her and her family only deepen with time. Through her, he meets her brother, Mr. Pegotty; her nephew?, Ham, the widow Mrs. Gummidge and Mr. Pegotty's niece, Emily. At school, he makes fast friends with many boys but most especially with the privileged James Steerforth and the not so privileged Tommy Traddles, both of whom show up again in David's adulthood. In the bottling warehouse where he is sent to work as a child, he lodges with Mr. And Mrs. Micawber who are always in debt. They also show up again in his adulthood. When the station of life that he is being forced into at his tender age becomes too much for him, he escapes to seek out his eccentric great aunt Betsey Trotwood who takes him in and provides for him. Through her, he meets her lawyer, Mr. Wickfield, his daughter Agnes, Dr. Strong and his youthful bride, Annie and we mustn't forget Uriah Heep. He marries, works hard and becomes successful. These are the majority of the characters and it encompasses more than half of the novel to get to this point. (In my copy, that was just over four hundred and forty pages). The only slow part is after David finishes school and before he meets his wife. That part did seem to move slowly but, apart from that, the story moves very, very well and -after all the characters are set up and well developed - it takes off like a rocket and is difficult to put down without worrying about the various characters predicaments and wondering how he is going to pull all of these strings together. This IS Dickens after all. I won't spoil the meat of the plot line for you. Again, look for those themes - "the first mistaken impulse of an undisciplined heart", and "there can be no disparity in marriage like unsuitability of mind and purpose".David Copperfield is, if such things are possible, like a "Best Of" Dickens. It is one very substantial novel and stands alone as an exquisite masterpiece. Yet so many characters from his other novels seem to return here to be rounded out and more deeply developed. David Copperfield (himself) reminds me of Pip of Great Expectations, Betsey Trotwood of Miss Havisham, Mr. Micawber of Magwitch, and Agnes of Biddy. Mr. Murdstone seems to be of the Gradgrind line from Hard Times. One character reminded me not of another character in Dicken's work but of the vile character from Les Miserables (Victor Hugo) who repeatedly attempted to extort or do harm to Jean Valjean and Marius. It would be fun to have read all of Dicken's work before reading David Copperfield just to see Dicken's feelings of the various character types and what time has done to them in his mind. Of course, like any "Best Of", you could read only this one work and have a deep and abiding appreciation of Dickens without having read any of his others.

The theme of David Copperfield By Stephen Balbach This is a first-person life-story of David Copperfield ("DC") that draws large on Dickens ("CD") own life. It was his "favorite child" and hailed as his best work by Tolstoy and Virginia Woolf. It includes a cast of over 50 characters. For its time it was one of the greatest works, and still is.To enjoy Dickens you have to let go, sit back, and enjoy the ride and not worry about the destination. Because although you can see the destination early on, like a mountain far off in the distance, the road to get there is entirely unpredictable and the distances traveled are deceiving to the minds eye. The trick is to enjoy the here and now, wherever the story happens to be, because Dickens will never follow the predictable path, and can leave one exasperated waiting for a plot closure. Consider a Dickens journey never-ending and you can just relax and enjoy the ride. The primary theme of the novel is how Copperfield learns to have a disciplined heart and morals. In other words, he grows up and becomes a man. This is seen throughout all the relationships in the book: love, business, friendship -- the mistakes of an "undisciplined heart". He learns self control to do the right thing even if his initial impulse is something else (Dora versus Agnus). He learns confidence in his dealings with the world (his innocent days of being ripped off all the time such as by waiters and cab drivers "my first fall"). He learns respect through the mistakes of others such as Steerforth. Self control, Confidence and Respect are all hallmarks of a grown man and we see Copperfield develop a sense of these, and the misfortunes that happen otherwise, to himself and those around him.

During the winter of 1944–45, the western Allies desperately sought a strategy that would lead to Germany’s quick defeat. After much rancorous debate, the Allied high command decided that First Canadian Army would launch the pivotal offensive to win the war—an attack against the Rhineland, an area of Germany on the west bank of the Rhine. Winning this land would give them a launching point for crossing the river and driving into Germany’s heartland. This was considered the road to victory. For those who fought, the names of battlegrounds such as Moyland Wood and the Hochwald Gap would forever call up memories of uncommon heroism, endurance and tragic sacrifice. Their story is one largely lost to the common national history of World War II. Forgotten Victory gives this important legacy back to Canadians.

Around the World--the Kindness Journey is a collection of vignettes and photographs from my travels around the world seeking to promote cultural bridge-building, understanding, and KINDNESS to various people groups. In December 2011, I began solo backpacking around the world and also launched this lifetime project. As I continue to undertake this journey, I also am seeking to locate and identify kindness-giving people and agencies that are reaching out to their communities in a variety of ways. This is my attempt to simply try to understand others by accepting them where they are and as they are in life. I also hope this will be an encouragement for others to go outside their comfort zones and reach out to people in different groups. On my continuing world travels, a lifetime project, I write while on the road, in the air, or in some exotic location when a thought or incident happens along the way. None of the writings are planned, but I write them as the thoughts and reflections come into my mind. I sit at my laptop, and the words simply start flowing from my fingers. Inspiration is what I call it, and I am so thankful for this special gift and the ability to simply place my thoughts into words for others to read. In this book, I have selected some of my most read writings that received the most comments and personal emails regarding them. May they be an encouragement to you and allow you to keep moving in your life.

This transparent, heart-warming book challenges those of us who too often remain within our comfortable, sometimes ignorant, and oftentimes selfish contexts, to consider what could be if we will learn to listen and be willing to spend time with people from every walk of life. Each short chapter takes the reader on a journey (at times across the world), and is filled with wisdom and kindness. This book reminds us that God's love, grace, and kindness transcend our faulty assumptions about people, Christianity, and issues that too often divide.

People attack Islam and try to show its nothing but evil terrorists and never contributed anything to the world!! Now I have another tool to point out the beauty of Islamic civilisation and how it enriched our current day lives. To hate on Muslims just because of a few evil terrorists grieves my heart because Muslims are a WONDERFUL people with a BEAUTIFUL culture and language and have done MUCH for humanity. Please don't get caught up in the Muslim bashing it's really inhumane to blame an entire civilisation for the crimes of a few.I expected this book to be words. I thought 'maybe there will be a picture or two'. FULL of pictures!! Very nice. This is AWESOME AGAIN thank you AMAZON!! I'm using Kindle on iPad and the pictures are terrific. For $8!! Let's celebrate the beauty in all races, cultures and faiths and the gifts they have given humanity. This book corrects a lot of injustices and accurately shows how Islamic civilisation has and does contribute to our lives. We are all connected by our common humanity so let's look at the good in each and celebrate that and be united. Gabriel love to you. And thanks for making this available on Amazon.

A Remarkable Compilation By The Student For someone who is avidly interested in the history of Scientific Advancement [or Ideas] by muslim scholars/scientists of the past and present, Gabriel Iqbal has wonderfully illustrated how some of the most [and slightly less] prominent scholars and scientists of Islam' have altered and affected civilisation through their ideas and discoveries. A remarkable compilation of achievements by these eminent people spanning fields like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Medicine and more. The ultimate goal of the encyclopaedia is very admirable. The author's desire for a sustainable future, peace and understanding shines through the book.Overall, it is a recommended if you are looking to gain a quick yet holistic introduction into the Scientific History of Islam, and how science as a whole can lead us to a better and peaceful future.

Major Work - Monumental Scientific Encyclopedia By Amazon Customer It’s a scientifically peer reviewed evidence based major work that cautiously keeps to the middle ground highlighting the positive achievements of all scientists whether Greek, Islamic, Indian, Chinese or European, while focusing on the Experimental Method as deciphered by Alhazen and his scientific peers. Religious and cultural bias is avoided and emphasis is laid on consensus for a globally shared responsibility. BBC and National Geographic have made various documentaries on this subject that are further detailed and peer referenced in this monumental scientific encyclopedia. George Sarton’s work, History of Science, is specially referred to including various other internationally renowned historians of science. Further, it gives solutions for creating a much desired ethical scientific and sustainable perspective.

It has everything a victorian novel is known for; beautiful ladies with long luxurious tresses, handsome noble men, wealth, jewels, silks, etc. and the good, the bad and the ugly that they adorn. Well worth the reading of this novel.

Conley Bosse Field is one of my favorite places on earth, and this book captures its long history and relationship with the city of Evansville. Its a good book for baseball fans, historians, people interested in the Tri-State. Many thanks to the Friends group who kept the park in the news after minor league baseball left in 1984, to the League of Their Own movie folks who made the stadium chic, and the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League who have used Bosse Field for the last 20 years.

Review One of the best financial planning manuals ever! Put it into use and watch yourself prosper! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. --Dan Zellem, CEO, Sweetland Press, June 11, 2002

From the Author Marc Stewart What is a book? For some people it's ink slammed into paper and collated into a narrative. For many it's something you do when there's a power cut. In fact a book is anything you want it to be, but more than anything else, a book is a transmission. A thought from one person, imprinted and sent to another. Time and space are insignificant for readers and writers alike. And alas, the most potent of those books and messages, seem to appear without fail decade in decade out. My own book journey started young really, even as a child I remember getting sucked into the pages of a good book and having to be physically dragged from it at times. Maybe that's why I bring such passion to my own work. "Be Your Own Life Coach", ever felt like information overload? It can be stressful to say the least. This special Method given within it is poised as a turning in people's lives. It's simple method of asking the unconscious mind any question and receive an answer. MRI brain scans have found that when the Be Your Own Life Coach Method is initiated, synaptic pathways are opened that once lay dormant and cognitive thoughts are increased. How about "How To Turn Your Child Into A Classroom Wizard"? This book is the definite guide to sharpening your kid like a new pencil. It gives you the parent, an innate ability to "ready" them for what lies ahead.  As you can see I've written or edited a plethora of different genres and all of them interest me as much as the next. What I hope and want for you right now is to dive in and start to experience books in a new light. How about my book "Godspeed Riches Into Your Life" it gives in plain English the one word secret to the Carnegie fortune. It is the real secret to success in any calling or for any idea you may have as a goal.      The book THE SECRET does not give the correct answer as attraction only arrives after the Carnegie secret is applied to one's life. It is also not the idea of having a Mastermind group. The real secret was not given plainly by Napoleon Hill either in his Andrew Carnegie funded and supported book Think and Grow Rich as he thought it best to let readers' discover it for themselves. This has only led to confusion and the real secret went unannounced until now. Also given on the front cover of this book is the free gifted secret affirmation used by Henry Ford to personally create massive wealth.      There is also a one million dollar prize given inside this book of mine Godspeed Riches Into Your Life. Also I am the creator of the Sangreal board game and its pocket edition "Cards For Humanity" both available through my store newboardgame.org. Both games are designed to start wonderful conversations on topics we all wish in America and the rest of the world that we would be talking about today instead of how's the weather? EnjoyMarc

Haanel was a successful business man who discovered that spiritual life is a key to success in everything you do. He proved that what is happening outside is in a direct relation to what is taking place in your consciousness. When the Master Key was published, it was one of those books that successful business men wanted out of the market. They didn't want people to read this book as its truths would help anyone to overcome limitations. The rumor is that when Bill Gates was just a student, he read this book and utilized its truths. Rest is history.I have read this book - it is divided in chapters that have introductions and numbered paragraphs to study. It starts from understanding the principles of your conscious mind and its power and advances to utilizing these principles. As you put in use what the author explains in this volume, you will start seeing substantial changes in your reality. In many ways, Charles was so much ahead of his time. Even today most profilic business coaches such as Antohony Robbins etc. do not admit the fact that your life is in your control 100%. We are taught that we are at the mercy of externals, but it ain't so.In many ways, Charles F. Haanel is the most outstanding business coach there has ever been. Way before current business coaches who incorporate spiritual life and business, he did it. If you are an owner of major company -- have every employee of your company to read this book and utilize it in their daily routines. Your company will become the new success story. That is for sure. Why am I giving just 4 stars for such an outstanding book? Well that is because the volume is rather long. I think the central message of this book could have been condensed into 60 pages -- but instead the author goes on and on for several hundred pages. On the other hand -- this does ensure that everyone grasps the principles involved in creating success.Does it work? Yes it does. Why do some people fail? Well, they just read this book but don't put in use its truths. For some it is difficult to understand or believe that your life is just a mirror that is telling you what you are in your consciousness. Think you have a problem, and one will surface. Think you have a solution and it is as well yours. Fair game.

It is an abridged version and is not worth buying. I went to the library and checked out the "real" book, which is more like 400+ pages. This book is barley 110 (plus 6 pages of ads in the back!). Look at the page count before ordering. Maybe I'm missing something, but there really should be a big, bold warning that this version is totally abridged. I've never seen a book so different from the original. It is ridiculously short, has no flow in the text (basically there are numbered paragraphs) and absolutely not the same as the original text. I don't really understand, actually, why it got published with the same name or why the reviews on here are so wonderful. I'm thinking maybe amazon uses the same reviews for all versions? Anyway, be sure to look at the page count before ordering and don't buy this one.

The Master Key System is the nearest thing you'll find to one. In this masterly and insightfull piece written over 90 years ago, Charles Haanel reveals the secrets to realising our greatness by providing the keys to total success in life - physically, mentally and spiritually. Before reading the Master Key I had read many of the well known classics of personal growth like: Think and Grow Rich (Napoloen Hill), The Power of Positive Thinking (Norman Vincent Peale) and The Magic of Thinking Big (David J. Schwartz). However I found none so fundamentally to the point and enlightening as the Master Key. I immediately liked the Master Key over all the others because it was so factual and practical, with a total absence of hyperbole. There is no 'the secret speaks to those who listen' treatment here, just the plain facts - and the fundamental methods to make it work for you. It did for me! The profound yet succinct treatment of such a complex subject leaves you in no doubt that you are reading the truth. Whats more, the structure of the book is very much geared around a working manual. Each chapter is a short weekly lesson with a practical exercise, successivly building upon the previous one, to take you logically through the total growth process. I found this structured pace very easy to work into my normal life. By the end you WILL understand how to use your power within to improve your life permenantly. Those looking for the one book to provide the key to making their life a success... this is it! This re-edited publication of The Master Key System (by Anthony R. Michalski) has been meticulously produced to be totally authentic to Charles Haanel's now extremely rare original.

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Yikes... By The Secretary I thought this book was written in some previous time period, like in the Victorian era when people were so prudish. Stunningly this is a newer book. It is filled with major historical inaccuracies, a very narrowminded view of Henry III, and longwinded religious views that no one at that time would have spoken or even thought to themselves. This is more of a work of fiction than a researched, historically accurate biography.

From the comfortable distance of seven decades, it is quite easy to view the victory of the Allies over Hitler’s Germany as inevitable. But in 1940 Great Britain’s defeat loomed perilously close, and no other nation stepped up to confront the Nazi threat. In this cogently argued book, Robin Prior delves into the documents of the time—war diaries, combat reports, Home Security’s daily files, and much more—to uncover how Britain endured a year of menacing crises.   The book reassesses key events of 1940—crises that were recognized as such at the time and others not fully appreciated. Prior examines Neville Chamberlain’s government, Churchill’s opponents, the collapse of France, the Battle of Britain, and the Blitz. He looks critically at the position of the United States before Pearl Harbor, and at Roosevelt’s response to the crisis. Prior concludes that the nation was saved through a combination of political leadership, British Expeditionary Force determination and skill, Royal Air Force and Navy efforts to return soldiers to the homeland, and the determination of the people to fight on “in spite of all terror.” As eloquent as it is controversial, this book exposes the full import of events in 1940, when Britain fought alone and Western civilization hung in the balance.

Naylor A revisiting of the summer of 1940 when Britain was the sole remaining military power in Europe that had not succumbed to the Nazi war machine. Mr Prior covers all the critical political and military events including the selection of Winston Churchill as war-time prime minister and the various issues that he had to resolve. The German army blitzkrieg through France and the miraculous evacuation of the British army from Dunkirk are put into relevant perspective. The integrated air control system implemented by Hugh Dowding that brought together radar plots, observer corps sightings and the sector management centers made the air space over Britain the most hostile environment for the luftwaffe. He almost had me feeling sorry for the Luftwaffe aircrews who had to destroy 4 RAF fighters for each German aircraft lost in order to establish the required air superiority that would permit an invasion of Britain. The failure of the luftwaffe to win the Battle of Britain left Great Brtain as an unsinkable aircraft carrier from which the Allies could launch the invasion to free Europe. It is a well-told story that brings some fresh perspective on the momentous events of that time.

Morrow On the 75th anniversary of 1940, this book is a timely reminder of the difference that one person can make, and that person's impact on the world. On May 10, 1940, the day of the German invasion of Belgium and France, Winston Churchill, who had been in the wilderness of the Conservative party only a year before, became Prime Minister. With the swift collapse of the Allied forces, and the possibility that the British forces would be trapped and unable to escape France, the new government had to consider whether to negotiate with Germany. From a logical standpoint, it made no sense for Britain to continue the war. Against Germany alone, Britain had no chance of defeating Germany, and risked invasion and conquest. Continuing the war would only bankrupt the country, and in fact when the war was over the country was bankrupt. Britain's only chance was to try and hold on and hope that the Soviet Union and/or the United States would enter the war and join forces with Britain to defeat Germany. However, if Britain had made peace with Hitler, and managed to maintain a nominal degree of independence, there would have been one of two outcomes of the war in Europe-either a Nazi dominated Europe or a Soviet dominated Europe. With Britain out of the war, even if the United States had entered later, there would have been no way for the US to send troops to Europe. Without Britain, there would have been no Operation Torch to liberate North Africa, no invasion of Sicily or Italy, and certainly no D-Day. Without Britain as a base, and the help of the British navy and army, the US would have had no role in the outcome of the war in Europe. Thus, either Nazi Germany or the Communist Soviet Union would have controlled that continent at the end of the war.Churchill fully understood the dangers of continuing the war, but also understood the greater danger represented by Hitler. He knew that the future of Western civilization was at stake. He risked it all, hoping that eventually, with the US and the Soviet Union, Hitler would be defeated, and at least Western Europe would remain free and independent. Even Clement Attlee, the labour leader, admitted that without Churchill Britain might have been defeated or might have negotiated an end to the war in 1940. Winston Churchill, because of his visionary leadership, saved Western Civilization. Yes, Britain and Winston Churchill saved Western Civilization in 1940. This book is an outstanding account of how and why it happened.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Provocative By Amazon Customer The author's goal is to describe the crises of 1940 and how Britain managed to stave off defeat. These crises of all been written about at great length. Nevertheless, Professor Prior's deep research and thought into the subject make this a worthwhile book. He offers a number of interesting ideas worth pondering. The author is a convinced Churchillian: it is Churchill and Britain that saved the West. He is right that Churchill was right in his insistence that Britain must fight on no matter what; but Churchill had feet of sand: he was as capable of losing the war as winning it. To take one example, the commander of the British Forces in France ignored Churchill and began planning for evacuation. A contrary decision might have led to the destruction of the British army and the loss of the war. Churchill was important, but it was Britain that saved the West. The author and his hero are too harsh in judging Franklin Roosevelt who lacked the power to declare war on anyone. Moreover, he wanted to defeat the Nazis, but he also wanted to choose the safest and best course for the United States. This is what he had been elected to do.

Richard Hakluyt, notwithstanding the Dutch look of his name, was of a good British stock, from Wales or the Welsh borders. At the beginning of the fourteenth century an ancestor of his, Hugo Hakelute, sat in Parliament as member for Leominster. Richard Hakluyt, born about five years before the accession of Queen Elizabeth, was a boy at Westminster School, when visits to a cousin in the Middle Temple, also a Richard Hakluyt, first planted in him an enthusiasm for the study of adventure towards a wider use and knowledge of the globe we live upon. As a student at Christ Church, Oxford, all his leisure was spent on the collection and reading of accounts of voyage and adventure. He graduated as B. A. in 1574, as M. A. in 1577, and lectured publicly upon geography, showing "both the old imperfectly composed, and the new lately reformed maps, globes, spheres, and other instruments of this art."

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It takes triple authorship to write a good double entendre By Christopher (o.d.c.) This little comedy was produced in 1717. The five-act version printed here was published in Dublin in 1758- "Printed for W. WHITESTONE, opposite Dick's Coffee-House, in Skinner-Row. "- re-introduced by the Augustan Reprint Society in 1960, thence to Gutenberg, thence to the Kindle store. There are two anonymous letters printed after the play, one a 'key,' whose author says:" ...The expectation of all lovers of the drama, were rais'd to the highest pitch, from the great reputation of the authors, (the Triumvir, as they were call'd) Pope, Gay, and Arbuthnot. I went to the Theatre the first night, but could not find the least room; every door that was opened to me, diffus'd more heat than a baker's oven, or the mouth of a glass-house. The next morning, I stroll'd to several coffee-houses, where I knew the wits and criticks met like surgeons, to dissect the body of any new piece; but I found more opinions among them, than there are sectaries in the world: So I resolv'd to venture a sweating the next evening, and be my own judge. When I came to the Theatre, I found it crowded as the night before, but fortunately got a seat in the boxes among some of my acquaintance..."The other letter, an account of the quarrel between Pope and Cibber, the actor, poet, and theater manager who played the part of Plotwell:" ... Mr. Pope's apparition to Mr. Cibber on this occasion was known to very few, but this of Mr. Gay was the common town and table-talk for some time, kept up by the grub-street wits that made many a hearty meal upon it, ('till something more in season threw it out of the bill of fare.) It is manifest, this truffing beginning put an end to Pope's friendship for Cibber if he realy had any; and the continuance of his enmity, for near thirty years, is no mark of humanity."The play itself is about an old doctor and his young bride, and two 'intriguers,' Plotwell and Underplot, trying to 'get with' the bride, who seems to be eager to help them. At one point, they are both in Doctor Fosseli's "musaeum," disguised as a mummy and a crocodile:Plot. Madam I am a human creature. Taste my balsamick kiss.Underp. A lover in swadling-clouts! What is his kiss, to my embrace?Plot. Look upon me, madam. See how I am embroider'd with hieroglyphicks.Underp. Consider my beautiful row of teeth.Plot. My balmy breath.Underp. The strong joints of my back.Plot. My erect stature.Underp. My long tail.Town[ley, the bride]. Such a contest of beauty! How shall I decide it?It is funny enough, but not a lost gem. Thanks to reviewer Phred for tipping me off to this play, and letting me review it first. Since getting this play, I have read a few more Augustan Reprint Society pamphlets, and have decided to upgrade my rating.

Comedy had already been Restored By Allen Smalling THREE HOURS AFTER MARRIAGE, a work of Restoration Comedy by John Arbuthnot with help from John Gay and Alexander Pope, appeared in London in 1717, about seven years after modern critics have declared the genre of Restoration Comedy at its end, and nearly twenty years past the point it dominated London theater. Nonetheless, it played to packed houses for seven straight nights (a near-record at the time), and it is often supposed that had it not been censured on moral grounds, it might have kept more of its reputation.Upon examination, this play has relatively little to recommend it besides it being an *a clef* but pointed satire of Richard Blackmore, a physician who wrote poetry. The protagonist in THREE HOURS AFTER MARRIAGE is also a physician with friends among the artistic class, and like many a potential cuckold in the genre, must shield his brand-new wife from all and sundry until he can achieve his end of spiriting her off, virginal and willing, to a secret point of consummation. But can he? One recalls that another term for "Restoration Comedy" is "Comedy of Manners," as the dear doctor crosses paths with hindrances and helpmates, most of whom appear to be frauds of some manner or another. When the play was revived in London in 2008, the GUARDIAN's critic praised its "visual ingenuity" (slapstick of a kind that hid a potential lover under the mistress' petticoats and used an alligator's tail as a phallic symbol), but that came at a lack of "vocal incisiveness" (playing for verbal wit). Perhaps the larger point is that this play is too busy of a play, and it is difficult to play for one aspect without cheating the other. Even the potentially crude plays of Wycherly, Congreve or Aphra Benn are models of wit and balance in which the audience can appreciate both the verbal audacity and the occasional lapse into physical comedy that spring from the pitched dialogue. This play is interesting -- what play from this epoch is not -- but does not recommend itself to modern viewers outside of those who pay rapt attention to the culture of early 18th-Century England.

Some wonderful word play, some stock characters and a bit with a mummy and a crocodile By Phred When originally produced in England in 1717 Three Hours after Marriage was something of a record breaking hit. Because it pushed a number of delicate topics such as cuckoldry and female wantonness it was critically reviewed as obscene and disappeared from play lists for 200 Years. The play was collaboration between Alexander Pope, John Grey and John Arbuthnot. However disagreement between the authors and the acting company would have Pope removing his name from association with the play. The play open shortly after the marriage of aptly named Dr. Fosseli , an elderly physician and scientist and his too young of a bride, Mrs. Townley. They should be headed to the marriage bed, instead they decide to keep their marriage a secret, thereby avoiding problems with the bride's family and delaying the fact that the old man realizes he is too old for a traditional wedding night. For the rest of the play Ms. Townley is the "bride, but not yet a wife."With the lady, this is indeed acting . Among others she has two ardent would be lovers, Mr. Plotwell and Mr. Underplot. The doctor routinely intercepts love letters between the loves and not quite a wife, even catching the men as they close their competing suits for the new bride favors. The new bride is just as clever at dissuading her husband that these men are any threat to the purity of the marriage bed even as she encourages them both. Ultimately she offers to honor them both as she has promised, once they decide who has won her.And so we have some of the stock figures bedroom farce: The old and foolish husband, the smarter and willing wife, and ardent lovers. Performers are likewise backed by the usual props, intercepted letters and disguises. Most notably when the two would be lovers appear in a shared scene disguised as a Mummy and a Crocodile. With so much of the basic plot using mostly stock characters and situation, what makes this a fun read is the quality of the interchanges among the characters. Double entendre are frequent as are several scenes of broad physical comedy. A subplot involves an acting company, and with them a `critick' Mr. Tremendous. He will engage in a humorous exchange with the poet who writes for the actin company and helps to start the fun.Three Hours after Marriage is mostly a light read. It is surprisingly close to the edge of proper even for a modern audience. This is not to say that is has crude language or obvious displays of lewdness, but the story line is perhaps too sophisticated for the young. Naughty as a major on stage device is not as new as some would like to think. This play stands as proof. The ending is that old man groom and too young bride mostly get what they want. But the ending is not the one either they or us would have predicted.
