The Shores of Memory, The Seas of Dream By Ralph Vaughan I live upon the shore of the Western Sea, often read novels and short stories with nautical backgrounds, and frequently dream of the sea, so it's natural for me to gravitate toward a volume that promises in its very title several dozen poems about the sea. It is a promise which is fulfilled in this collection of poems from Cale Young Rice, a poet of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a fulfillment that is all the more surprising when you consider that Rice is a son of landlocked Kentucky. The sea, from its depths to its surface, from shore to shore, is paramount in almost every poem. In those few poems where the sea is not the center of attention, it is always at hand, sometimes a menace, often an enticement, always mysterious and romanticized. Given humanity's long relationship with the sea, it is not surprising that Rice often turns to port cities for inspiration, sometimes American and European, but more often Arabian and Oriental. The sea is filled with menace of all types, and in a few poems the menace is man made, the submarines of the Hun aggressors; in one poem, a man likens God to the bloody and heartless Kaiser when faced with the insufferable loss of his wife during a German submarine attack...an attitude Rice might have mirrored in 1943, when he committed suicide, grieving and inconsolable after the death of his own wife. Rice's poems are lyrical and rhythmic, perhaps a bit old fashioned compared to the works of the modern poets, who have abandoned such "needless" things, but they conform to my idea of the poetic form, and can be enjoyed when read aloud, unlike their modern counterparts, or considered in contemplative silence.

As a part of Australian history, who were the Clarke Gang? Ten years or more before Ned Kelly became famous, the Clarke brothers and their associates, from 1865 to 1867, were terrorizing an area stretching from present day Canberra to the coast. They intimidated, assaulted, robbed, and murdered police and civilians alike. They had no hesitation in killing any member of the gang suspected of being untrustworthy. The romantic appellation "bushranger" blurs their vicious anti-social behavior. They were able to escape what was then the rather short arm of the law by the vast network of relations and other harborers. This book examines the Clarke Gang's exploits and the terror they aroused in the population. It questions why the gang is hardly known, whereas Ned Kelly is regarded as an icon. The conclusion: the Clarke Gang operated in sparsely populated areas, serviced by bad roads and a poor telegraph system. Reports of their crimes were reported months after the event. By the time Ned Kelly began his career, technology had improved, which meant that Ned could use the media to publicize and romanticize his motives. The Clarke brothers were illiterate and lacked Ned's media skills. The book is illustrated with contemporary pictures, numerous maps, and other details. It reveals "bushranging" stripped of its romantic and rebellious cloak. *** Librarians: ebook available on ProQuest and EBSCO *** "A riveting saga of crime and punishment, "The Clark Gang" is enthusiastically recommended for public library world history and criminology shelves." - Midwest Book Review, Library Bookwatch: August 2015, The Criminology Shelf [Subject: History, Australian Studies]

By Paul Leslie Sparks This is an absolute masterpiece. If you really want to get a feel for what it was like in the wild frontier that was a greater part of 1860s Australia, then this is a must have book. Extraordinarily researched with a plethora of relevant photos, some never published before, The Clarke Gang brings to life a period of Australian history that has slipped through the cracks of time, and tells us a lot of how the colony developed in a way that affected the very fabric of rural society. Don't wait, grab a copy of this book and lose yourself in a world that is closer to you than you think. Simply brilliant!

Septimus By hereswhatithink I always enjoy stories that turn the table on cliche, convention and cardboard cutouts. In Septimus we find a delightfully unusual hero who is modest, inconsequential in appearance, flighty, untidy, eccentric, and inventive. Mainly, he's inventive in developing complicated weaponry, which is pretty ironic when you get to know what a tender-hearted, self sacrificing person Septimus really is, (and you will eventually learn why he chose that trade) but it does send the point home that you can never judge by appearances. When I first meet Septimus in chapter one I felt a moment of dismay. "Oh please don't tell me this bumbling idiot is going to be the hero...". See how we judge on first sight? I'm ashamed of myself. But I soon found myself rooting for him and you will too.I could have done with less of Clem Sypher, the inventer of "Sypher's Cure" and more of Septimus though. Clem at times dominated the story, he was larger than life, and while I understood why he was there (to serve as contrast) and although I do feel that he was neccesary, he hogged.Still a 4 Star read for me and is free on public domain.MY RATING: G

Free PDF Ebook Traveling in Style: Three Years of RV Camping, Nine years of RV Living, by Edward Dingledy

This book is written to be entertaining and ‘How to have fun in an RV’ book. It has nothing to do with “How to fix” book. Nor is it a “What to buy” book. There are lots of publications that provide that information and they probably know more about those subjects than we do. Anything we are capable of repairing usually is based on common sense and duct tape. Nor does the book go into a lot of detail about the various campgrounds. New ones are being built and old ones are changing. There are travel guide books that are more current in their knowledge than we are. The book is how to enjoy RV living. It describes wonderful places to visit, interesting people we have met and the experiences we have had along the way. They were frequently educational and always entertaining. Our original idea for an RV was to get away for about 3 months in the winter and go somewhere warm. We did that and had a good time. We had no intention of full time living in an RV but, with our experiences, our intentions changed.

Excellent introduction to the adventures of the RV lifestyle By Amazon Customer Traveling in Style is a fun read chock full of interesting historical and geographical tidbits recounting the time that the author and his wife spent enjoying the RV lifestyle. After 14 years on the road, I could relate to much of what he has written and have enjoyed visiting many of the same locations. This travelogue gives the reader an accurate description of not only the joys of traveling in the RV but a taste of many of the adventures that wait you. The author's mastery of history and geography is impressive and only adds to the enjoyment of this book.My only criticism of the work is that it did not accurately reflect many of the frustrations dealing with a home that experiences a 6.5 magnitude earthquake every time you drive it down the road. If you are not willing to occasionally roll up your sleeves and dive into the engine compartment or deal with that pesky leak in the black water tank, then you might reconsider this lifestyle. However, as any seasoned RV traveler will assure you, the joys of this type travel far outweigh any of the perceived negatives.Remember, your most important feature of your RV is the ignition key!

By Shelly Pollock If you ever had any doubts about whether to hit the road in an RV, Traveling in Style, will convince you to do it! The book is a great share of RV adventures that will also give you a very realistic account of what it is like and many suggestions on places to visit. A great, fun resource for RV'ers!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For The Armchair Traveler By A Customer Are you an armchair traveler? Do you sit by your fireside, wondering what some distant place is like? And does the idea of packing and unpacking in a different hotel or motel room night after night take away any pleasure such destinations might hold? Try this: take your home with you. That is exactly what author Ed Dingledy and his wife Betsy have done over the course of several years. Traveling in Style is Ed’s account of seeing the USA (and some of Mexico and Canada, too) in the comfort of their own home - - - as long as the home was on wheels.Starting in 2001, the Dingledys roamed the land, driving at first in a rented camper, and then over the years, moving up to one of those bus-sized rigs that roll over almost any roadway you can take a car. The advantage? Not having to unpack, re-pack, unload, reload as you go from place to place. Instead, according to the author of Traveling in Style, you can focus on the where, not the how. You simply point your vehicle in the right direction, and you can spend the night at home on the road.Part one of Dingledy’s book covers their adventures as part-time travelers. The results of those first forays into road-America led them to consider, and then embrace life-on-the-road in their own RV, giving up a permanent address for a kitchen-to-closet vehicle. Part Two details their experiences over several years following that choice. The author and his wife lived where they wanted to live, following the weather as much as their inclinations. Travels from east to west, north to south, and the reverse became a way of life.If the idea appeals, or just raises questions about what such an adventure would be like, this short book gives just enough information, as well as great stories, to whet the armchair traveler’s appetite for at least considering trying on this idea for size. RV living isn’t for everyone, of course, but here’s an excellent introduction to the subject.Ed Dingledy writes with humor, attention to detail, and just enough information to open the door. For this reader, the only thing missing in this enjoyable read is that there aren’t enough pictures to give a bit more flavor. That said, the book should give any prospective RV-er a good roadmap to get started.

Creek Indians inhabited land that was to become Telfair County. The early population was made up of settlers of Scottish descent. They had to produce almost everything they used, from food to equipment. Named for Edward Telfair, a two-term governor of Georgia, the county was formed in 1807 from a portion of Wilkinson County. Gradually, several counties were formed from parts of Telfair. Since 1870, Telfair County has kept its current boundaries. The original county seat was located in Jacksonville, about 20 miles south of McRae, Georgia, where it was moved by the legislature in 1871. While Georgia was a hotbed of secession, Telfair County representatives to the Secession Convention in 1861 voted no to the resolution, reflecting the sentiment of the countys population. Even though there was strong objection to secession, many Telfair County citizens did their duty and volunteered to serve the Southern cause.

Tiny, tiny font size makes this difficult to read By critique Good quality paper with print so small I shall need a magnifying glass to read it (and I don't wear reading glasses - my eyesight is good!) Such a disappointment as only about half the page is actually used (large margins). Increase the font and narrow the margins and this would be a delightful publication to read. As it is, reading this Trollope will be hard work.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A short story By SM This was a very short book - a small story. The characters were interesting. It was somewhat predictable and petered out with no consequences. Disappointing.

Beverly did a masterful job of presenting a genealogical story through the eyes and memories of her elders from those days "Back Then."I also enjoyed the historical aspect of those times and how she wove it through her narrative - a great way to personalize history for the reader.

Well done account By Sarah Elisabeth This book is a collection of stories, historical tidbits, genealogy, photos, and author notes woven together to tell one family's story from pre-removal to modern times. This isn't simply a book on one family's history with dry facts and records. It's information for anyone interested in Choctaw culture and history to consume in bite size, easy to understand text and photos.I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read that not only covered centuries, but tales of the enduring spirit of a family and their faith that stood the test of time. The point of view was delightful, written in an often humorous tone as imagined by the author of one of her ancestors.Well done account. I hope there will more books like this in the near future to help preserve the history of our people.-Sarah Elisabeth SawyerAuthor of “The Executions” (Choctaw Tribune Series)
