The land now called Concord was originally inhabited by the Abenaki people and the Penacook tribe. Concords first settlers, such as Ebenezer Eastman, began laying out the Plantation of Penacook, as it was known in 1725, along the fertile fields of the Merrimack River. It was incorporated in 1734 as Rumford and then renamed to Concord by Gov. Benning Wentworth in 1765. Concord experienced a surge in transportation and manufacturing in the 19th century, producing the Concord Coaches, Prescott Pianos, and steam boilers. As Concord celebrates its 250th anniversary, the city flourishes as the state capital and has a thriving community of restaurants, entertainment, and culture for all to enjoy. It retains its town sensibility as it plans for the continued growth of the local economy. Todays civic leaders, like Byron Champlin and James Carroll, work conjointly with business leaders, such as Tom Arnold of Arnies and Juliana Eades of the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund, to build and enhance Concords cultural, social, and economic identity.

Any Concord resident or NH history fan should purchase a copy of this book. Not a definitive history of Concord but rather a look at not only the luminaries, such as Supreme Court Justice David Souter or orater Daniel Webster, but also the families who have been in Concord forever and comprise the backbone of any community. People such as Michael Hermann, owner of Gibson's Bookstore & Cafe, which has been doing business since 1898, or Dr. Douglas Black, who has been an obstetrician in Concord for 50 years. There are many more examples of people such as these who make Concord the place it is. The pictures alone are worth the price of book. And Arcadia should be commended for its commitment to publish books such as this.

The collection of community members dates from 1697 in the story of Hannah Dustin to contemporary figures of politicians, business leaders and unsung heroes. This book doesn't have to be read from front to back. Each story is free-standing and entertaining on it's own. Each story is a springboard, capable of launching any enthusiastic history buff into a myriad of interesting topics. A thriving city community is comprised of contributing individuals...and this book pays recognition to many of them. I can emphatically recommend this book to any proud New Hampshire citizen or history lover from any locale. I consider myself both and I hope this review is helpful. This would be a nice addition to any classroom and could be used to incorporate a history component to many, many subjects.

I recently moved to Concord and one of my favorite things to do is to walk in White Park where I often meet and have conversation with some very interesting people. Some of the people I meet clearly contribute to Concord in meaningful and unique ways, and while none of them to my knowledge are 'famous' , they are clearly people who in their very unique ways make Concord such an interesting community. Reading this book was like walking in the park and having conversations with people from the recent past and much earlier times in Concord. I really liked that it is not, nor did the author set out to make it a historical reference book although clearly much research was put into the book. (I especially enjoyed the photos that were included) but rather the author provided a glimpse into the lives of some very interesting people who are making or have made Concord a rich, diversified and interesting community. In her introduction, the author writes that it is her hope that this book will inspire readers to look more deeply into Concord's history... and it has! I recommend this book as it is a nice springboard to pique ones interest in learning more about Concord.

I really liked the author's itinerary suggestions - Hospital in the Rock Museum sounds fascinating and the baths sound too good to be true. Can't wait for my trip to Budapest - so much history to absorb! This book definitely helped with the planning process and provided great insider tips.

A runner-up for the Newbery Medal and considered one of the top chapter books for children, My Father’s Dragon is told from the unique perspective of a narrator who is describing the adventure of a father, when he was a child. After learning that a baby dragon has been imprisoned on a faraway island, the narrator’s father does what any rational and sensible child would do — goes off on a journey to rescue it. The ending is happy, of course, and the tale is a delight for the young and old alike, with the latter being transported back to their own imagination-driven childhoods.

The other translation I read had the original lines of one person then the modern version in italics after, it was much clearer.

A wealthy, prominent German-Jewish family was torn apart, first by suicide, then by Hitler. At sixteen, Siddi, the youngest, was left on her own in Nazi Germany. Through an extraordinary chain of events, she found herself in Central Asia. Leon, a handsome Polish Jew, worked his way up from poverty to become a successful salesman. Through an equally extraordinary chain of events, he also found himself in Central Asia. Siddi and Leon met and fell in love in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Together, they struggled to survive hunger, homelessness, deadly epidemics, a black market economy, and Soviet police harassment. After the war, they managed to get from Central Asia to a displaced persons camp in Southern Germany. Along the way, they had a baby. Incredibly, in the DP camp, this Jewish couple developed an enduring friendship, which defied the hatreds of the time, with a German woman and put their baby girl into her care. An Improbable Journey presents the historical context and provides many vignettes that describe Siddi and Leon's different worlds and the people in them: the sister who met King Edward VIII; the puritanical daughter of a brothel owner; the Jewish best friend who survived living underground in Berlin. An Improbable Journey is a story of the triumph of the human spirit. It is a story about people who beat incredible odds and about the courage, love, friendship, and hope that keep the human race going.

The struggles and improbable escapes from Nazi persecution reads like a fast paced mystery but it is all based on a daughter's well reserached family history and the accounts told to her by her parents. At times a difficult read given their long, difficulty journey, betrayals and the hardships that this family endured, but they not only survived but thrived after their escape. For this family, living well was the best revenge.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating story of survival during the Holocaust By Elizabeth Lipman A fascinating story, well told. Dr. Schenkel relates her parents' struggles as Jews in central Europe during the 1930's and 40's: their escapes from the Nazis, through their time in a DP camp in Germany. Although they were lucky enough to escape the concentration camps, they still suffered times of poverty and grave danger. It is also the portrait of a tempestuous but enduring marriage.

I couldn't put it down. As a child of survivors, it resonated with me as a universal story and yet it is powerfully unique. Schenkel's book is a must read for anyone whose life has been untouched by the vagaries of war.

Following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, one of his commanders, Seleukos Nikator, rose over a period of forty years from being a landless refugee to the most successful of the Successor kings. This biography, first published in 1990, makes use of both historical and archaeological sources to trace the stages of Seleukos’ life as he added province to province, kingdom to kingdom, gradually building an empire which stretched from India to Greece and founding a state which lasted for the next two centuries.

This strangely neglected figure in ancient history emerges as a modestly proficient general, an excellent strategist, a consummate diplomat, and an inventive and constructive ruler, the diversity of his empire demanding intelligence of a high order to hold it together. Seleukos Nikator will be of interest to students of ancient history and the politics of the Hellenistic world.

By Murray Domney A few weeks ago this book was on offer in Kindle edition at US36, which - considering that it's only some 200pp of text but noting that it's a Routledge publication(!) - is about what one would expect. Now it's on offer at US112!Did I miss something? Who's kidding whom?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Alternative Alexander By Gareth Seleukos Nikator "the Victorious" was a contemporary of Alexander the Great, one of his junior officers at the beginning of his campaigns in Asia, and the last man standing of Alexander's immediate successors. He would fail to re-establish Alexander's empire, but he would leave an empire to his own successors, almost the Persian empire that Alexander conquered, except for Greece, Egypt and India, that would endure for a couple of centuries before invaders from the east and the Romans from the west swept it away. Only Macedonian Egypt survived longer, but only as a client of Rome. This is a very readable and informative book. The author has mastered the sources, understanding the problems of the partial or non-existent information from the period under study, and is able to identify the motes in the eyes of previous historians who have speculated in these gaps, while pointing out the potential beams in his own hypotheses regarding some of them. However, he is very plausible, and is quite happy to say "we don't know" where there is no room for speculation. The book is a narrative history, and the reliability of the sources are discussed as they appear in the story, without detracting from the narrative, as understanding the sources is essential to understanding the period. There were many 'propaganda' stories created and circulated by the various contending parties during the period, and there are interesting discussions of the meaning and purpose of these, and their likely sponsors. There is even an entire war missing from the sources, the campaign by Antigonos against Seleukos from about 311-308BC. Page 88: "The existing records can be interpreted to yield a story of sorts, And more information will turn up, as excavations in areas such as Iraq, Iran, Soviet Central Asia, and Afghanistan are made". This book was published in 1990. I think we must reconcile ourselves to a long wait for further information. There are 5 useful maps at the back of the book, along with copious notes. The author, as befits a discussion of a Greek subject, uses lots of "K"s in the names, such as Kyros (Cyrus), Karrhai (Carrhae), Kilikia (Cilicia), Kappadocia (Cappadocia) and Kassandros (Cassander). It may take a while for us older readers more used to the "C" spelling to change modes to follow the pronunciation. The book does not look at the cut & thrust of battles or their tactics, but does discuss the campaigns, as they are an integral part of the story, the main protagonists all fighting for an empire, and Seleukos is called "the victorious", after all. This is a very clear and readable book on Seleukos and his world.See The Wars of Alexander's Successors 323 - 281 BC: Commanders and Campaigns v. 1 and The Wars of Alexander's Successors 323-281 BC: Battles and Tactics v. 2 for further reading on the purely military side of things.Further recommended reading by John D. By Dr L W H Taylor Grainger’s Seleukos Nikator is thoroughly researched and very well written piece of work.It is the go to reference for anyone requiring a complete and comprehensive understanding the rise of Seleukos I Nikator from lowly officer rank to become the most powerful of the successors. The book is an indispensable reference for anyone interested the forces and dynamics that shaped the Hellenistic world in the forty years following the death of Alexander the Great. But don’t think it’s a light read. This is a serious academic study that rewards the committed reader with the deepest understanding of the rapidly evolving political and military landscape that followed the death of Alexander the Great, plus the larger than life figures that populated that landscape. It presents the most complete and detailed analysis of the political genius of Seleukos I Nikator in founding a kingdom unlike any other. It provides the evidence that Seleukos I Nikator was the most capable and competent of the successors.Without parallel this book is an absolute must for anyone seriously interested in the Seleukid Kingdom and how it came into being.

It's an authentic account of the experiences of a combat veteran who served with the mighty Eighth Air Force during WWII. It is written in a stalwart yet witty style. History buffs and aviation enthusiasts will enjoy the read.

We have been friends for several years but I never knew the extent of his service in WWII. As a professional Aviation Historian I was not in a hurry to read Art's book but that was a mistake. It is a remarkable account by an really incredible person. He gives a true to life account of his first hand experience as a B-17 Bombardier from being drafted to returning home to the us after his remarkable 35 missions. There are so many small details that Art includes that I have not come across in most of the accounts of B-17 operation in WWII. And he provides a remarkable insight into the people he met and the places he was station in that few other accounts include. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the personal experiences of WWII bomber crews. Its an excellent read.

Explores the history and present-day reality of grain elevators on the Great Lakes.Grain Dust Dreams tells the story of terminal grain elevators—concrete colossi that stand in the middle of a deep river of grain that they lift, sort, and send on. From their invention in Buffalo, New York, through their present-day operation in Thunder Bay, Ontario, David W. Tarbet examines the difficulties and dangers of working in a grain elevator—showing how they operate and describing the effects that the grain trade has on the lives of individuals and cities. As Tarbet shows, the impact of these impressive concrete structures even extends beyond their working lives. Buildings that were created for a commercial purpose had a surprising and unintended cultural consequence. European modernist architects were taken by the size and elegance of American concrete elevators and used them as models for a revolution in architecture. When the St. Lawrence Seaway made it possible for large ships to bypass Buffalo, many Buffalo elevators were abandoned. Tarbet describes how these empty elevators are now being transformed into centers for artistic and athletic performance, and into a hub for technical innovation. Buffalo has found a way to incorporate its unused elevators into the life of the city long after the grain dust from them has ceased to fly.“Grain Dust Dreams is a miniaturist masterpiece. David Tarbet was raised in a Canadian grain shipping hub, and takes us on a fond and fascinating tour of the history, the culture, and the technology of North American grain elevators. Beautifully written and rigorously researched, Grain Dust Dreams is an unusually charming addition to industrial history.” — Charles R. Morris, author of The Dawn of Innovation: The First American Industrial Revolution“Drawing on personal experience, David Tarbet writes with authority. This is an important subject presented in a manner that’s accessible to all.” — Thorold Tronrud, Director, Thunder Bay Historical Museum“Grain Dust Dreams is an intimate and personal account of the impact of the grain industry on two North American communities. The reader will be transported into the inner workings of a grain elevator, and uncover the significance the elevators had on the communities in which they reside. Readers will also enjoy the personal accounts from workers in these engineering marvels along with the hazards encountered by their operators. Tarbet also explores the perplexing question many communities face: how to repurpose these majestic structures so that they last for posterity.” — Tim Bohen, author of Against the Grain: The History of Buffalo’s First WardDavid W. Tarbet is a retired attorney who lives in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

If you have any interest in grain elevators put this on your bookshelf By George LaPray I very much enjoyed this quick read, one of the very few writings which effectively conveys the setting and feel of actually working in a grain elevator. The authors experiences lean towards the grain handling industry in Thunder Bay, Ontario which I very much enjoyed as it was a giant of grain handling activity, but too often given only passing mention in histories and architectural reviews of grain elevators.

A friend asked "Who would be interested in grain elevators?" and after hearing about the book, admitted that he might be. And was! These elevators enabled grain to be lifted from trains on to ships and transported around the world opening up the prairie states of both US and Canada. Our next trip is to visit Silo City and see them for ourselves.

Travels through France and Italy, by Tobias Smollett

Review Work by Tobias Smollett, published in 1766. The breakdown of Smollett's health and the death of his 15-year-old daughter in 1763 precipitated a year-long journey through France and Italy. The book takes the form of a series of letters in which he describes the social life, history, and physical setting of each city he encounters. Sick, irascible, severely prejudiced, and intolerant of pretense, Smollett argues with his hosts and fellow travelers and holds French and Italian art, politics, and Roman Catholic religion in contempt. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

From the Back Cover "Traduced by malice, persecuted by fiction, abandoned by false patrons, and overwhelmed by the sense of a domestic calamity", Tobias Smollett set off on a journey through France and Italy to relieve his despair. While there, he wrote regularly to his friends, who had asked him to keep records of inns, prices, and methods of transport should they wish to make the tour themselves someday. Smollett more than obliged them, and the result is this fascinating, wholeheartedly personal account of places and people in France and Italy. In one of the letters, Smollett makes his famous forecast that France would be in trouble as soon as a weak monarch came to power; in another he recommends the Roman Campania be drained and cultivated - a recommendation that was carried out in the Pontine Marshes in 1932-34. But Smollett is at his best when describing the inns and housekeepers, postilions and travelers. Travels through France and Italy is a landmark work in travel literature. Full of prejudice, grousing, sharp observation, and caustic satire, it is the first travel book in modern literature to go beyond the simple conveyance of information to reflect the writer's state of mind.

About the Author Tobias is the author of several books, inclu ding the Adventures of Roderick Random and the Adventures of Peregrine Pickle.Sir Osbert Sitwell, born in London in 1892, was an English writer and baronet.

One of the best by Smollett. The only complaint is it being devoid of any sort of editor's comments, sometimes even translations of Latin phrases are missing.

Smollett wanders around and takes notes By othoniaboys I read the Oxford University Press edition of this work, complete with extensive footnotes, which I recommend as the best edition for modern use. The reader gets an insight into the way things were in Europe in those days.
